Okay, so I come from the world of 1.5 years of Motorola MIlestone and dealing with locked bootloaders and then about 9 months on my Nexus S.
What I've noticed is that ROMs always come as just ROMs (esp with the Milestone because of its locked bootloader). The Nexus S would have custom kernels and stuff, but recovery was always separately flashed.
I've recently been helping my friend mod her Captivate and I just got an SGS2 yesterday. How come ROMs in SGS2 and Captivate world are bundled with the recovery? This definitely confused me when I did CF-Root because it gave me CWM 4, but I wanted a newer one obviously. People suggested that I just flash some other ROM and I'll get a newer recovery. I'd just like to know how come recoveries are bundled with ROMs and what not.

I know how to root, and I have achieved Root already. I'm just wondering why these phones bundle CWM and other recoveries with ROMs, while on my Nexus S, it's always separate? ROMs are just ROMs without CWM...
Really its because CWM is the method used for flashing most custom roms and as many users are not able to read the guides i guess devs just add CWM .
That saves posters saying help i flashed xxx rom and have lost CWM .
Standard method of updating CWM is to flash a later CWM and root Kernel not a custom rom .

Hey XDA-Developers,
I'm not a very active poster on the XDA forums, so you will probably not know me, but I read this forums every day more then once
I always had a HTC Device since i got Android until now. I just ordered a Samsung Galaxy SII and have a question about this phone for Custom Roms.
On the HTC phones the Custom Roms are flashed through Recovery, so i think you can guess the question:
Is the only way to flash Custom Roms on the SGSII with Odin, or is this also possible through Recovery?
I'm hoping for a nice and helpful response, because when i receive my SGSII, I'm immediately rooting my SGSII and wanna try some Custom Roms
With Kind Regards,
Patrick
It can be flashed only through odin because it also flashes kernels and bootloader files with rom..
You can flash kernels or mods with cwm recovery(once you get it)..but roms are flashed only through odin..

Now the only thing is to wait for my SGSII

Im new to the whole SGS2 so needed a little help ive rooted my Galaxy and its on UK 2.3.5 stock rom my question is can i flash any rom i choose or is it like when rooting it when i had to get a kernel that matched.
The other thing is, is it worth buying Odin Mobile.
Cheers
Once you root your phone and have CWM recovery and not the stock one you can flash any ROM you choose. It has nothing to do with kernels but each ROM is based on a firmware so you should match your firmware to a ROM based on the same to start with and if you choose to stay with the same ROM then there are non-wipe ROMs that can be flashed over top without worries.Just be sure you read properly the install/flash instructions. Some ROMs need Odin to be flashed but most just need to be pasted to your internal-SD and then flashed in recovery mode.Ill leave a link below to my ROM where there is an instruction guide so you can read it to see what I mean.

It depends on how you have rooted ...... if as mentioned above you have CWM (means you have flashed a custom/insecure stock kernel) just flash a ROM with CWM Recovery like any ZIP but i'd advise you to reset the phone before that .... since you are on Stock ROM which is Odexed and all custom ROMs are deodexed you might end up in a bootloop also may i suggest CheckROM as it is simple to install and highly customizable thus i recommend this as your first flash......
checkrom thread:

else i use this site it's pretty awesome to keep track of things

Cheers to both of you, i think i will give checkrom ago as theres that many to choose from and im new to the rooted SGS2.
okay just making sure i have this right.
i've backed up all my data, backed up my google account. just cuase im nervous.
now, do i use oneclick to root it.
once rooted, i flash the rom,
then i flash the kernal
and does the kernal have to by compatible with my model of i9100tdvkf2
ive been lurking forums but cant seem to find any answers :\
Seeing as you're a beginner, I'd recommend using CF Root. You flash it via Odin as a kernel, you get root, clockworkmod mod and it's simple!

thanks for the reply mate, i really just want to ROM it for the simple purpose that is getting a new ui/interface/feel to the phone haha. something flashy, or better battery's worth.
but cheers dude i will do that until i get a firmer understanding.
but just dont understand what kernal to use , the one that comes with it, or do i need to get one to match mine?
Kernel as per the instructions .
Custom rom as per the instructions .
Rooting custom roms or custom rom counter above zero will void your warranty .
Root + CWM .

Thanks dudes i actually understand now that putting roms on and kernals etc, that's just rooting i thought to root was another process all together.
but it's just like saying MOdding i guess.
Some questions i have are, Are roms Kernal specific. EG
could i soft brick if i just used CFkernal. then flashed a rom afterwards?

It is you need to read the faqs and guides .
Rooting is rooting and not putting roms and kernels on.

Yes but unlikely but in your case more probable as you have failed to understand the very very basics .
Root using CWM and root and flash a custom rom afterwards via CWM is the normal route .
FAQS and GUIDES all in the sticky.

Hey I luckily got my hands on 9100 and not the 9100g. As there are too many roms I got confused on which one to flash. I downloaded miui ics version and flashed it via CWM it got stuck on boot logo. I had a nandroid so I just restored it back
The phone is on 2.3.6 so can I directly flash ics roms via CWM? It's rooted. I like cyanogen but I have heard its got bad camera app. Can someone guide me to the best roms and also to some must have apps for a rooted phone. SGS2 is my first REAL android experience.
And also the phone runs real hot.
PS : I have used search button.
Hang on to your stock for a week, then Westcrips 1.2 (4.04) gets released.. use the time in between talking on your stock phone, and reading up the 1900 pages on that rom
There is no perfect or right ROM.you have to test what fits you best.
Try different ROMs and kernels and you will find your personal perfect ROM.
I tried many different GB and ics roms and my personal favourite is Turkbey ROM v37 SE.
Very stable, fast and awesome looking

So, using that search button, you must have found the dozens of posts saying that going from GB to ICS ROMs, if you're stuck in boot logo or boot looping, then to try a full wipe, right???
Maybe not.

I would say go Cynaogenmod their ics rom is running very stable, but it is a matter of personal taste, but as a first time custom rom i would stick with Cynagonmod. You can find the latest release here. As for flashing roms while on 2.3.6 will be fine, just make sure you do a nandroid backup and do a data wipe, cashe wipe befeor flashing as this will cause bootloop.
I can recommend hydrogen-ics with latest siyah kernel because it is my current setup
If you are new to rooting and flashing roms then i would recomend get more experience before flashing a custom kernel. Although i do use siyah kernel and it's wicked, so if you do venture into kernels as well i would recomend Siyah kernel the same as gent.xda
stay on ur stock rom ,untill u kno ur phone well an read xda too,an abt roms there is no perfect rom (define perfect)i don think anything is perfect///////well as for roms spikes, omega, ics remix, hydrogen are good ,cm9 is always updating but if ur a teck geek miui ,cm9 is it...........cheeeerz
This GalaxyMOD looks good: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1482372 and it's your neighbor from Mumbai.
There is no best ROM it's like everything in life depends on the needs...
Read / backup / Flash and return to back up if needed
Since this is a discussion and not "plz can i haz the best ROM"
Post what rom you're on and the reason for it!
Thread closed.
I have recently installed Darky Rom and am very happy with it however once flashed my recovery was also flashed to the latest 6.0.1.2 touch recovery. Now my question is is this recovery safe to use or should I flash an older version?
I have read several threads for different samsung devices across XDA and it seems a lot of people are bricking their phones using this recovery?
Eg: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1874389
Any advice would be much appriciated before I attempt ot use this recovery to flash a new rom or back up or wipe.
well, it can be some bug related to other devices and not s3, but i can't tell for sure. All i can say is that it works for me and i haven't had any problems with it yet
It would be safer if you stay with cwm5 until cmw6 is stable and bug free

@carrd
I don't think the SGS3 has one of those faulty emmc chips.
But if you're worried, download Chainfire's bugtest.

None reported for SGS3 .

Before reading this I decided to downgrade to cwm 5.5 as this has been out and stable for a while. Just hearing several people albeit not S3 users have bricked their devices just worries me

I use CWM you mentioned and no issues so far. I flashed about 20 rom already and used this recovery to backup data and no problem.
