[Q] OTG cable capabilities - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi everyone, just bought a OTG cable and it works great (rooted SGS2 + checkROMv4 + redpill 1.3 kernel), I've tried flashdrives and external HDD (with external power source) and it works just fine, but my question is:
WHAT ELSE I CAN CONNECT AND USE WITH MY OTG CABLE? (sorry for the caps)
I tried with a usb mouse and keyboard and no success at all.

Some devices working/not working via USB OTG can be kernel dependent. If your mouse/kb won't work, it might be that the kernel doesn't support same. Might want to ask the creator of the kernel you use/or someone else in its thread if this is the case/how to get these working if they are supported.

[Q] USB port usage

Is the USB port on the ViewPad 7 limited to charging?
I inserted a USB memory (using a converter plug) but the VP7 did not recognize it. Has anyone successfully connected something to the port?

Thats's a limitation. USB port on Viewpad 7 is passive, so it can not read external sources.

I do recall someone talking about using a "USB OGO" cable to do something like what you are talking about... Look into it on "android.modaco.com" looks like a modified USB cable and a custom rom will let you attach a flashdrive to your USB port...
hope that helps...
I have one of these When You fist connect USB to PC it installs a virtual cd drive . You can either ignore it or let it install after that Plug in USB while tablet is on ,it will ask you to turn on USB storage tap turn on and SD card shows up on PC as a removable disk you can read and write to with Windows Explorer
Sorry for the Stupid Noob post I misread it.Thought you meant internal storage

No worries mate, I have been able to move files (mainly music) between my PC and the ViewPad, I just found it odd that since it will obviously act as a receiver through the USB port from a PC why wouldn't it receive directly from a USB memory? Obviously I don't know enough about how these things work.
According to some users the viewpad 7 kernel supports usb OTG where the devices acts as the host.

I played this morning with some USB cables and my Viewpad 7 and I found as follows:
1) You need USB OTG cable or USB OTG adapter with USB A female connector at one end and with USB Mini B male connector at second end - that end you should put in Viewpad 7 USB socket. With such a combination Viewpad 7 can read USB flash memories. I will try later other USB devices.
2) it worked fine on tj_style ROM and on Viewsonic stock ROM with Android 2.2.2.
3) Mouse works, but there is no cursor and the selection "jumps" from icon to icon.
4) Wireless keyboard, USB DVD player and USB hard disk do not work.
sorry for the maybe noob Q, but do I have to mount the usb memory or do i directly see the files in a folder...
I use ghost commander and cannot find the containing files...;-/
Thx in advance
--> Problem solved: It was the NTFS-Prob....With fat32 everything works like a charm...(no extra mounting...)

I use the Q5 USB Memory Manager app to mount a memory stick or a usb hdd. This works even on custom roms. Try google to find out more about this app.

Simple Test report
Device: Mini Pro SK17i
Rom: Stock 2.3.4 .58
Kernel: Stock
Bought a OTG cable for Samsung yesterday, and another USB Female to Female adapter for an ordinary USB cable.
a) The female - female adapter for use with microUSB cable = FAIL. Charging function intact, no detection for any USB device.
b) OTG cable:
1. Plugged in a mouse - cursor appears on the screen immediately. Rightbutton serves as return button. Scroll function works
2. Keyboard: not tested
3. USB Lan RJ45 (works on some Android Tablets): NOT working on Mini Pro. "Unsupported USB device" appears on screen
4. USB flash Drive: Toshiba 1Gb - Unsupported
Transcend 4Gb - Unsupported
*Tried out the USB OTG patch for Arc. NO LUCK
Conclusion: Unless you want to use external mouse or keyboard on your convenience, DONT bother to use the OTG for external memory/ethernet. It would not work on current rom. The OTG function is more or less useless.
USB flash works perfectly with Q5 USB Memory Manager app, i tried to connect 4gb flash and 2 gb flashcard via card reader)
But i could not make the mouse works
Some USB Hubs are working great ! Toady i plugged an apple pro keyboard into my device which was correctly found by my St17i
after plugged a mouse into the apple keyboard and also a 8 GB intenso usb stick. All 3 devices worked at the same time, astonishing !

... and RAY also. Ray support USB storage?
I've tested an Samsung Micro-USB-Adapter (ET-R205U) on Ray (Ginger 2.3.4 stock), this week and NO result with Sandisk Cruizer 2GB USB flash drive.
Mouse and Keyb's works fine but no external usb mass storage.
I didn't test any usb hub yet. Someone of you did it?
I dont know a lot about USB OTG but there is an USB OTG apk in system/apk.
what if we replace that apk to some other gingerbread running phone's apk which perfectly runs USB OTG
have you guys tried the USBOTG ARC app that is on the market? Apparently can make USB sticks works.

How to Enable OTG?

how do i enable the OTG mode on the Galaxy SII running android 4.0.4 (resurrection remix ICS 1.8 ROM) and i have a kernal that claims its working with OTG ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574672&highlight=otg ) but when i connect my cable and usb stick ( tried other devices) nothing happens! any help would be much appreciated
I just acquired a 'micro-B USB OTG' cable myself (a cheap knock-off from eBay).
As far as USB drives are concerned, I have found that I must insert a USB thumb drive into the cable before inserting the cable into my GS2. Otherwise it will not be recognized.
When inserting the cable + thumb-drive I get these two messages:
"USB connector connected" immediately followed by
"USB Mass storage connected"
and I am able to use the USB drive.
I have successfully been able to connect a 1 GB Kingston DataTraveler II, but - oddly - not a 4GB Kingston DataTraveler. An unmarked 8GB USB drive was also recognized.
I have not been able to connect: a Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 v.1.0 (not that I need it, but just to see if it would); and neither an HP mouse. For previous versions of Android (before ICS) you can easily find information of users successfully connecting all sorts of things including keyboards, mice, and larger hard drives.
A few other important issues are:
- File format for drives must be FAT32
- Before removing the cable+drive, remember to unmount drives by opening the notification area and click on "USB mass storage connected".
that helped me out.....not what so ever.
what is OTG btw?
On-The-Go, lets you plug in USB devices like mice , keyboards, and usb sticks into your phone like a computer

If the USB is partitioned as FAT32 a nifty notification will show and you can press that and then browse.
However, if the USB is partitioned as NTFS, you should open a file manager with root access (Root Explorer or ES File manager to name a few) and browse to /mnt/ntfs/ and you should see your files there.
Note: Am only assuming this is the mount point, since looking at the kernel you are using, he mentioned gokhan for the USB OTG and I am using his kernel (Siyah)

hdd or usb to sg2?

i have micro usb to usb .
i have ics cm9!
With a USB OTG cable like this, you should be able to connect USB sticks & some other USB devices dependent on kernel (I know Siyah & CM9 stock kernels support this; don't know about others as I don't use them).
So far as an external drive goes, if the drive has an external power source, you might be able to get it to work.
Is this what you were asking ?

[Q] Need USB OTG functionality

I recently added the DSC 2.2 ROM to my DS5 in the hope that I could use a USB OTG adapter cable. I previously had limited mouse capabilty using the adapter, but after the new ROM I have no USB OTG capability at all. Does anyone know how I can get the OTG function to work?
