Hey guys, long time xda/android user here, and I am currently still on my folks family plan with at&t with a captivate (rooted/rom of course). I was thinking of branching off and going with a carrier that still offers unlimited data, or bumping up to 2 gigs with att ($25). I want to watch movies, play pandora, all that, without having to get on wifi, and without worry of going over my limit. What do you guys think? Are you able to watch netflix on 3g without a lot of buffering with sprint? How are your own 4g/3g speeds? How do you like sprint in general? I am in texas and will be around midland, dallas, and houston. I ask in this forum because I am interested in the photon, and the data heavy people are definitely in here.

As long as you are in a good sprint service area you shouldn't have any issues. I would try sprint out by starting up a new contract and if you like it then port your number over from att.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
And does anyone know if I signed up for a contract, if I didn't like the service, could I terminate without a fee within a certain date?
I don't know about Texas, but I'm up in northeast Wisconsin, in a small town, and while there's no 4G until you hit Chicago, the 3G is surprisingly strong up here, as long as you don't get too rural.
As for the canceling with no fee, you have 30 days on Sprint. See www DAWT sprint DAWT com/landings/returns/
About the Photon, since you mentioned that you are rooted with your Captivate, I'd assume you'll be doing the same thing with the Photon. Rooting is easy enough, but unlocking the bootloader took me the better part of yesterday, and I've been doing this stuff (flashing ROMs and such) since the day I got my original Evo 4G, sometime in August of 2010.
Although the unlock proved difficult and time consuming, a good chunk of that time was waiting for all the requisite files to download over the Photon's 3G connection.
Other random thoughts: I really like the Photon, this thing absolutely flies. This implementation of MotoBlur isn't too bad, either, although I prefer AOSP-based Android any day of the week. (Here's hoping for CyanogenMod one day soon.) Oh, and the 3G radio in this thing is way better than the one in my old Evo 4G. I get much better data speeds, to the point where it's noticeable in everyday use.
I hope this helps, and welcome to Sprint! Unlimited data is awesome.
To me, the best part of Sprint is the Google Voice integration. Which, by the way, not only means advanced voicemail, but also dirt cheap international calls and really convenient texts. With Google Voice enabled, I can send a text with my number from virtually everywhere: web, Google Chrome widget (sooo useful), iPad, oh you name it, and then have history of the texts stored neatly on the web.
If you're worrying about coverage, know that the $69/mo (+ $10/mo) plan covers 450 roaming minutes with Verizon. Pretty much covers all sorts of emergency "NOOO SIGNALLL OMGGGG" situations.
wow, thanks guys for the replies. I think I will try Att's 2 gig plan for a month, then consider switching if I get close to the cap. Yeah, I'm hoping that unlocking the bootloader and such will become easier once more people jump on board to the dev scene, and people have more time to play with it. I watched a couple of video reviews that talked about the radio and consistently getting more bars than the evo in many areas, and the headset is pretty loud, both of which are more important to me than 3d. Didn't know about the roaming minutes, that is great information as well.
If anyone has anything else to share, please do, I'll keep you guys posted with what I do in the future, thanks!
Im in fort worth and switched from T-Mobile I am enjoying the unlimited data and yes I stream netflix on 3g at work all the time and it's a crappy area so sprint has surprised me big time.

Where is this number of minutes specified in the TOS ?
technically, as long as you stay under 50% of your total voice minutes while roaming, they wont complain much... And if you bounce off that barrier, they will usually call u first and tell u to knock it off..
My wife and I purposely used over 10gigs of roaming data each 2 months I a row and didn't even get talked to
YMMV

there is no finite number of minutes allocated to roaming before their panties get bunched up. The way the ToS reads (paraphrased) it's 'the majority of' or greater than 50% I believe..
if you use 3k minutes and 1k are roaming minutes, they aren't going to care.
hello..
i hope you guys dont bash me to bad,
i have been spolied with my evo 4g free hotspot, and would like to upgrade to the new evo lte 4g, but need to know, do you think that will be a easy thing to have? ( once its rooted )
i dont know becase of the lte side of things if there going (sprint) be able to make sure that wont be a option..
I'm not sure of the details, but if they have it on the 4G and the 3D then it will probably be the same on the LTE.

Yeah. Once rooted, it was easy to install a root-only tethering solution, which was (is) free.
I expect it will be the same with the E4L.
I read on the Att One X forum they used wifi tether beta 14, selected generic ICS, then slected the htc routing fix and it works fine
A third party app should work. That said....don't abuse your unlimited data if you aren't paying for the tethering. The data hogs will be the end of unlimited data and/or throttled data on Sprint. While I do tether from time to time, I don't use it as my home Internet for my computer. Just be mindful of usage so we continue to enjoy our unlimited data.

The phone companies have trained you well. We paid for unlimited data, we should be able to use it anyway we want. There is no difference if you consume 2GB watching Netflix on your phone or 2GB on your laptop using the rooted hotspot. Should I watch what I eat the next time I go to a buffet? Should I go on less rides at the amusement parks? Should I pee less in the public pool? Helz no (except for the peeing thing). If they raise prices, shame on them, not shame on us!

And when Sprint gets rid of unlimited data because they can't afford people abusing rooted hotspot, I'm sure you'll find great comfort telling them they should be ashamed. After all, you've got (really bad) analogies!

And your parents trained you to be an asshole well. By tethering, you are breaking your agreement with Sprint. They have the right to terminate you. They also have the right to end your contract if you use excessive data. Read your contract. As for your analogies, try going to an "all you can eat" buffet and sitting there all day feasting. It won't happen.

I don't think a buffet really has a leg to stand on in that reference. As long as you don't stop eating for 5 hours and then decide its dinner time. I'd like to try that one day. Some of the asian buffets have some nit picky rules and they do enforce them. I'm getting hungry talking about this time for some general taos chicken and pork fried rice.

My uptake in streaming netflix went up this month. Already at 20 I think. Between that and downloading roms.

I use 4-15gb a month. Those extra game downloads (1.3gb for max payne) can add up quick.
Averages around 6gb, think it peaked at 10. I don't use wifi though as I don't see the point if paying for unlimited.
I did exactly the same things on 3g for a while & data used was cut by at least 50% but it's too damn slow.
I rarely break 1 gb even though I have unlimited data. However last weekend I was at my friend's when his internet went out so I tethered his whole network to my phone and in one night hit close to 2gb used. Only a few days left in my billing cycle so I'll probably end up around 3 gb.
I fluctuate between 8-11gB/mo. This tiered data thing is really gonna cramp my style, cuz I have no idea how much my FB queen uses. But she's on her Rhyme probably more than I am on my Rezound. But hers is only 3g, so I guess it can't be that bad.
Funny/sad part is, the HTC Rhyme is so slow and buggy that the poor baby wants to throw it against a wall half the time. It's soured her on android so much that she's thinking about jumping ship to the iCrap. Wait till she sees the Galaxy S3. She'll come around.
About 12gb

Between 2 and 10 depending on whether or not it's hockey season. I use NHL Gamecenter all the time during the regular season (tether my phone to my TV for full games on my big screen...wish the resolution was higher ) to show games my cable provider doesn't give me. During those months I use quite a bit.
I use anywhere from 2 to 3 gb a month and that is with having wifi on whenever um at home. Strictly 3g where I live also so that probably makes a difference.

Yea mine fluctuates also depending on a lot of things but it has rarely gone below 3gig a month and has been as high as 20gig...
i have to say i really don't understand what is happening right now with the data caps...Manufacturers are constantly making new, better and faster phones, the phone companies are upgrading their networks, and the developers are providing content to take advantage of the capabilities of these new phones and fast networks, Netflix, music, Skype etc., so many of these things are huge data hogs...
Why would the carriers limit the data so much...these new plans on Verizon are crazy expensive, i am grandfathered in on the $30 unlimited and that is a lot for me. I cant and couldn't use my phone the way i do now on the tiered data plan, i just wouldn't be able to use a smart phone any longer. i just don't get it...it seems counter productive to the whole scheme of things.
I'm a power user..
about 100mb a month.

last month i hit close to 160 gb because i left my hotspot on all night and i didnt put a password so apparently whoever was on my wifi was very happy and decided to to use almost about 120 gbs in one night dont know how dont know why but my speeds here in houston texas are very fast 60 down and 25 up so i guess they were downloading stuff thought verizon was going to say something but they didnt but i use around 40-80 gigs a month as i have no house internet but i do pay for my hotspot its the only way to keep the nat open when i play ps3 online!!!
average is about 100gb. most ever was close to 300gb. i used to tether a lot for online gaming... although every night i stream music and fall asleep leaving it streaming. i also stream videos a lot via netflix & hbo go.
No more than 10 GB a month, and usually around 4-5. My 4g service sucks and it's constantly dropping, so I use it primarily for Google Music and use wifi for any big downloads.
Used to get 30-40 Mbps down, but my speeds are closer to 5 Mbps now, so it rarely makes sense to use 4G for downloads any more.

Unlimited data died 6/28/2012. Unlimited data was survived by many continuing users and a crappy pooled data replacement plan.
His name was unlimited data. His name was unlimited data.
And so on.
Amen.
My thoughts and prayers are extended to all who lost this loved one.
Unlimited was a good connection, and a good deal. He was...He was one of us. He was a connection who loved the outdoors, and data, and as a surfer explored the beaches of southern California from Redondo to Calabassos. And he was an avid bowler. And a good friend. He died -- he died as so many of his generation, before his time. In your wisdom you took him, Verizon. As you took so many bright flowering good deals, at Khe San and Lan Doc (voice rising) AND HILL 364! These good data deals gave their lives. And Unlimited too. Unlimited...who...who loved bowling. And so, Unlimited--Data--Plan, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your mortal remains to the bosom of the bandwidth pool, which you loved so well. Goodnight, sweet prince. ****, I'm sorry Dude. Awww, **** it Dude. Let's go bowling.
I'm going to pound my unlimited data as long as I can for all of you who've lost. That's the only consolation I have for you.

I think I might hate you for saying that... Even though I have unlimited data and never come close to even 4GB/mo, what you're saying is basically total blasphemy in my eyes.
Doesn't cost VZW any more for unlimited. They just found a cash cow to milk.
Look you should pay for what you use. The one size fits all monthly fee is stupid. If you use over 10GB/month that is not fair use. There is no way you need enough data to stream 100 hours of Netflix per month. I use 1-2 gb/month and I use my phone quite a bit. I think $5/GB would be fair.

Maybe it shouldn't be $30/mo for unlimited, but there should be much larger data allotments for the price than they are offering. With my Cox cable at home, I get 300GB/[email protected]~30Mbps download for $60/mo. LTE is comparable in speed, and therefore could easily accumulate the same amount of data downloaded in a month.
The fact that Verizon advertises that you can watch Netflix HD over their LTE connection, but the reality that one movie will eat up almost half your monthly allotment in 2 hours, is where the problem comes in. They essentially advertise a usage model that is completely impossible given their bandwidth restrictions and pricing.
The entire world is moving towards cloud based services, consuming more and more data for what are becoming everyday activities. If Verizons data plans don't become cheaper and allow a more realistic bandwidth cap, then we're all going to get ****ed in the end.

We know your opinion, and frankly it's Verizon's problem, not mine. If they have a problem with me watching an hour of Netflix a day at the gym, they shouldn't have sold me a phone with unlimited data, and sold me on mobile Netflix.

If you want to watch an hour of Netflix every day, that is fine. Just pay more than the people who don't. $5/GB is fair. You can set Netflix to use 100mb/hour. So Netflix @$0.50/hour is fair. Your Netflix slows down my web browsing.

I think that you should pay for 'peak data' like we pay for peak minutes.
During business hours and other times, maybe do a $5/GB, then pay whatever for unlimited otherwise.
At 3am, there isn't much additional cost for Verizon, with everything place, for me to use tons of bandwidth.
At 7pm, when everyone's home from work, streaming their pr0n, I get it. Make it 5am to 9pm limited, and 9pm > unlimited, for whatever price.
I'll deal with that.
Flat rate $5/GB with a 5GB a month minimum is the way to do it. So a smartphone will still cost $25/month if you use 0mb-5GB. Then $5/GB after that.
Things like Netflix and pandora are what are causing bandwidth problems and everyday use of these needs to stop. Of you have a long car ride one in a blue moon that you need that stuff for 5-10 hours no problem. But if you stream pandora every day that is bs. Buy your music and support the artist.

Please go to the freepress.net petition link and sign the petition to help FCC restore Internet neutrality.
In the press conference Verizon states that they remain committed to open Internet. If that's the case, why did they fight to win the battle to control Internet access and what goes through their networks?
I think Verizon has really done it now. First they want to control how much data people use, next what people do with their phones, now they want to control what websites people can visit or who gets access to the Internet. If they get away with this, it will be the end of free Internet access. I think that's too far for any company to go. I urge people to terminate their lines or service with Verizon if this doesn't get reversed. I am prepared to do the same thing. Without their customers they're nobody, Verizon cannot be allowed to go this far, someone, hopefully the FCC, will put Verizon back in its place!
Oh I will be done with Verizon for sure. Tired of all the bs.

It is disgusting that being cash flush allows major corporations to pervert the Constitution. I don't actually need a cellphone anyway. I have a home phone and a CB with a 700 watt Midnight special linear amp in my truck with a 102" steel whip. It does shut my truck down on occasion though and Jack in The Box hates when I key up.... maybe I need a bigger ground strap?
I guess what I'm saying is the idea of getting people together and boycotting for a purpose is a great idea but it will never happen. Take any given Sunday and 2 million or more people can get together and watch Football but you can even get 2000 together in an effort to preserve their civil rights or freedoms. Just my .02

Our judicial system is completely f'd... once this starts I'm out... Verizon can keep their locked phones and kiss my a$$...
That is such BS. If that were to happen I might have to abandon ship.
I'm on Verizon Unlimited and use about 20gig a month on average and yet to see slowdown - run speed test app often.
If this happens I'm definitely leaving them. Right now I have unlimited data also I can upgrade my line. But with this news going around, I'll just wait and see what happens. Either way I'll be ready for you Verizon!

The trouble is that it isn't just Verizon, this mess has been several years in the making and just about every big internet provider is on the same side as big V. If Verizon gets away with it, it will become standard practice and you won't be able to escape by crossing the street.
The truth is, legally the judge made the correct choice: the FCC doesn't have the authority to regulate broadband internet unless they classify it as a communications service. It was the FCC who dropped the ball on this one and they are the ones who need to fix it.
I've been noticing something strange for the past few days. Maybe it is related to this, maybe not.
If you are an Xfinity TV customer, you might know they offer an app called Xfinity TV Go for mobile streaming. I've called it a scam before because it is only available to Verizon only and it eats about 1.5-2GB/hour without even being high quality. I use it because I have UL data, so that doesn't worry me.
In Philly, I get a whopping 3 Mbps down on Speedtests. Its been like that for more than a year. Up until a few days ago I could stream Youtube HD videos no problem, but now I can't even stream on 4G at low quality (not HD). I installed a traffic meter and it is only using 80-100KB/s, nowhere near saturating 3Mbps. However, on Xfinity TV Go I can pull down 400-500KB/s consistently with spikes to 1MB/s. I only bring this up because Comcast and Verizon are affiliated in markets without FIOS, and it wouldn't surprise me if they were doing something to it.
