For some reason, the notification volume is not affected by the volume rocker. Does anyone have a way of lowering and raising all volume at the same time?

I'm noticing this as well. On my Infuse, the volume rocker would raise and lower the ringer AND the notification volume. It's also annoying having to dig into the settings to change it everytime!
yeah it would be great to link all volumes to one for me
Has anyone found a solution to this issue yet? This is the only phone I've found with two different sound settings for calls and notifications.
Thanks in advance.
Bump. There's no mods or anything that change this?
I actually didn't notice this until you pointed it out. I spent some time trying a few apps from the market that were suppoded to link the volumes but nothing seems to work.

I see nothing about tieing the notification volume to the volume rocker. Do you use it as such? Seems it is just another volume widget which I already use AudioManager for. AudioManager has profiles so I can set my notifications to go quiet at night.
Edit: Figured it out. You bring up the sound volume you wish to change using the widget. Then you use the volume rocker to adjust it. If it had profiles it would be sweet.

No, it really does tie them together. You have to use the widget to do it, but it works flawlessly and is neat looking to boot. Thank you very much!
Was just looking in my AudioManager settings and there is a setting for Ringer and Alerts linking but it is greyed out. I wonder if this is another of those ICS things.

Yep, Quick Settings (by halfbit) actually links the 2 together. Can't unlink them but I don't want to anyways.

Tried the app and put the widget on the home screen but it still doesn't tie the two volumes together. When I tap the one i want to change on the widget and use the rocker its still only changing ringer volume

After further review Quick Settings does not work for linking the 2 together for ICS. Although it shows correctly in the Quick Setting settings it does not actually link the 2 together. To test go to regular volume settings and turn all volumes on full. Then go to QS settings and bring down the volume to almost silent but not silent. You will see both ringer and notification volume set to low in QS. Now go to your regular volume settings and you will see alert volume untouched. Better yet, send yourself a sms and volume will still be full.

Agreed. Tested the same thing in quick settings with the same results.
I guess its just a Samsung thing cuz I've never had this issue on anything but a Samsung phone. Galaxy nexus, skyrocket and now the note. Fortunately there were work arounds on the other two phones (via custom rom or market app). Really annoying!

Is there a way to make the ringer and notification volumes to be linked together so they both change to when I use my volume buttons? The buttons only change the ringer volume and I want it to change both ringer and notification volumes together.
I tried Quick Settings from the Play store which I have used on other phones to "link" the volumes. But it doesn't do that on my SGS3. I have tried a couple other apps that say they do that, but again they don't link the volumes together on my SGS3. Anybody know how to do this?
Having trouble with AudioGuru (paid). It doesn't seem to effect the volume either. Alert function not adjusting the alert.
More details.
With the Alert Notification sound set in GoSMS, the phone Alert Notification sound is different. AudioGuru only shows the Phone Alert Notification sound not the GoSMS Alert Notification sound. When muting the AudioGuru 'Alert' only the Phone Alert Notification sounds is muted. The GoSMS Alert Notification sound is not effected thus not muted etc..
I hope we find a fix to this. I'll be checking back but I too would like both these sounds to be at the same level. Thinking I had my phone on silent and then getting slammed with a notifcation ring is not what I intended.

I will be watching this thread too. I have tried many apps on the market that said it could link ringer and notification sounds, but none of them worked. Hopefully there is a workaround for this. When I turn my volume all the way down, I assume it will make no noise. Then I had my email sound go off at 3AM when I was sleeping. Not what I wanted at all. Many phones have this option in the sound settings, so I don't see why Samsung couldn't have put that in here.

^^^ This.
I've spent the last day un-TouchWiz'ing the phone as much as possible (replacing apps with AOSP ones, launcher with Trebuchet, etc) but this volume thing is driving me batty.
I have been able to get the ringer and officiating sounds to "link" using the Go Switch widget. It works all the time when you open the widget and check the box to link the two and adjust the volume while the widget is open but Ive also got it working otherwise but this is spotty.
Yes! i would love to have the 2 linked. When I first got the phone I couldnt figure out why the ringer was so low and the Notifications were so loud.
There seems to only be 7 steps for volume on the S3. I've found that the lowest setting for notifications is still quite loud in a quiet setting. Is there anyway I can make it quieter without resorting to using quieter notification sounds?
I'm coming from a Droid 3 and the lowest setting was perfect, it was just loud enough for me to hear at my desk without it bothering others.
Now I have to keep my S3 on vibrate at work, and it's annoying for me because I never seem to hear/feel the vibration.

Do you mean Volume Control + by Coffeebreak Apps? (sorry can't post links yet) I tried that but it has the same limitations as the stock settings, just 7 predefined steps.
Or do you mean Volume+ (Volume Boost) by Meltus? I don't see how that app would help but I guess I'll try it.
Thanks.
Update: I installed Volume+ from androidaudiohacks dot com. I changed the levels to the lowest setting on everything and it made no difference to the notification volume :-\

I've tried a couple dozen different apps but they all seem to be tied directly to the same system settings that can't make it any quieter. If you happen to know of a specific one that might I would love to hear it (if you have the time that is, I'm not trying to inconvenience you)
There is a setting in build.prop. you can set it up to 20. Can't remember its name tho

Hmm really? It lowered the volume of your notification sounds? My hearing is average, it's just that it didn't actually lower the sound for me. Perhaps I did something wrong? I'll try again later tonight and see if that is the case.
I'm also looking for a quieter volume setting. I'm surprised how loud the ringtone and notifications are at the quietest setting.
I suppose rooting and getting a custom rom might be the way to achieve this but having already bricked one S3 I'm a bit wary about diving right back into the pool! But if someone happens to find a ROM that gives more volume control let me know!
Volume Rocker?
Are you turning the notification volume down with the volume rocker? I just realized that the notification volume does not match the ringer volume as you adjust it with the volume rocker. On my Evo 4G I could check a box that made them adjust up and down at the same time. On the GS3 I have to press the volume rocker then press the settings button that is visible in the ringer volume pop up. From there I can adjust the notification volume independantly.
It does however mute the notifications when the ringer is set to vibrate or mute.
Can someone build that into a ROM? Where the notification and ringer volume go up and down together?

No I use a widget (Widgetsoid) that lets me change the two independently. If I wanted to I could check the box at the top (see attached screenshot) and then the volume rocker would adjust both at once.
I never had any luck getting Volume+ to alter the volume of my notifications.

Are you mistaking the notification level for system level? System sounds kill my ears, and I actually have to adjust it through Settings > Sound > Volume. Looks like Widgetsoid might be an easier method, instead of going through settings every time. Also, I set a schedule in the Timeriffic app, so that it's ever too loud for me anymore.

Well, I thought I made some progress on this.
As you can see from the attachment, I did get there to be more steps. I had to make some adjustments to framework.jar to get it to change.
BUT, it doesn't do much good.
For the ringer volume steps 9-17 are silent. 8 is the loudest. 18 is the quietest..
For the notification volume, step 1 is still just as loud as before, and steps 8-15 are silent, so that was completely pointless. I'll edit the framework to have ringer and notifications be 30 to see if that does anything. It's really a crapshoot of what I'm editing, there are no descriptions just hex characters.
I'm using CM 4.3.1 ROM 10.2 but I do not know how to take screenshots and adjust vibration mode? Please help

Anybody a hint how to avoid that Volume opens?
It's very difficult to press exactly the same time both buttons. When I get this done, no Volume opens, but it's hard.
The time window seems to be 1/1000 ms or less.

Yes!!! This prefere I too, if possible, but not possible with PopUps, they disappear when I push the POWER Button. There only way with this combination POWER+VOL-DOWN exactly at same time.
I even have a little Tasker Task for taking a screenshot (with /system/bin/screencap), more comfortable than POWER-Menu, but this neither works on PopUps.
Hmm, I acturally tried that vol down + power and it really works. Tried doing it 5-6 times a row and worked every time. No volume changing at all. I didnt even know there's such a shortcut, thanks guys. But unfortunately I'm not on CM now, but Slimkat (omni based I think), so maybe they fixed something there? What about trying external screenshot app which allows to shake device or set own shortcut? Have you tried that?
I guess this is a bug in CM10.2, have to live with it, there is more annoying things in live
I noticed that if I first press Volume (down) and then (max about 0.5 sec later) power button, this works much better. Normally no worries then, screenshot reliable done.

Now I uninstalled the Xposed module "Xposed additions" which was the culprit for these irregularities and now it is vice versa, first power button (hold) and then Volume down.
Works.
I found "Xposed additions" as culprit because after an update of this module the screenshot didn't work at all.
I had used this module to set the Volume button as Camera button, which messed up something I guess.
No button will work.Try to use motion on and then swipe your palm.OR try to use application of screen shots from playstore.

Hey evbody, Im back with Note 8 (from the 7 & LGV20) and have a wierd issue. At work I have a Bluetooth speaker, syncs up fine, nice & loud. For some reason I cant control the volume direct from the phone. The slider moves like normal and its either full blast (or so it seems) or off. Its like the ramping ability of volume is gone. Did something change with Samsung while I was away? My LG and other Sammys worked fine. Say for instance Im playing music and a few profanity laced tracks come up, I could lower volume by simply pressing vol down hard button, without waking phone up. Now Its unresponsive and When waking phone up,it shows me slider is almost at minimum yet Lil Wayne is still blastin. Moving slider more goes to zero which kills all audio.
Any ideas? Is there a Bluetooth profile or something I missed?
Does the volume slider show the name of the device as you're changing the volume?

Yes, It shows up as Sound Kick 2. I misspoke early stating button was unresponsive while phone screen is off. It actually does work but behavior is still the same. ie. Holding volume down wont do any ramping until volume hits minimum/zero which mutes all sound.

Sorry, beats me....perhaps unpair and re-pair....the only other thing i can think that may be doing it is in the volume panel when you click vol button and if you press the arrow to the right to reveal all the volumes....have you enabled the option to 'use volume keys for media' i DON'T have that enabled....perhaps if you do try disabling it and see if that works.
Best of luck getting this issue resolved. If i can think of anything else i will chime back in.

Whereas with my note 7 and EVERY other phone the two volumes where independent....i could have phone on full volume and speaker at 15% etc....so interesting find......gonna try enabling that toggle i mentioned earlier and see if that switches back to old method.....must be part of the new bluetooth protocol.

Im thinking youre on the right track of a new BT protocol or something to that effect, your view on how your Note 7 behaved is exactly how mine behaved on various devices. My phone sits closer to me where as my BT speaker is hard to reach. I usually kept the BT speaker volume at max and used phone volume buttons as my control. Hopefully I can do a little testing in the a.m.. I actually skipped my internal playlist today and streamed iHeart due to it.
I see your potential fix and will give it a full swing at work tomorrow, actually anxious. I'm a person who needs music to be productive. Thank you for digging around for a solution.

Thank you so much. Still helping in 2019.
Just to add a little something that really expands how the volume is used, download from the Play Store Sound Assistant and Precise Volume. Sound Assistant is a very light program that allows you to control the sound of every app on your phone and has an EQ included.
Like if you play games on your phone and don't want the game(s) to be heard, you can turn them each all the way down while still keeping your ringer, media, notifications, etc the same. Or you can modify those individually as well.
Check it out.
Solution to this in 2020 is under disable absolute volume under developer setting. You must toggle Bluetooth off and back on and also turn Bluetooth speaker off and back on. Now you can control the volume of some older speaker with your phone.
Hello,
I'm pretty new to the android system (previously windows mobile) and I don't really understand how to start or stop the vibrations when the ringtone is ON. For now, the phone always vibrate when ringtone is ON, and if I deactivate the vibrations on the app notification itself, it will not vibrate even in vibrate mode.
Is there a way to easily choose to have vibration or not, regardless of the ringtone volume and the app notif setting (I don't want to go to setting and activate vibrate mode for all the app one by one each time I want or don't want the phone to vibrate!)?
Just enable vibrate while silent and disable vibrate with ringtone, for notifications though its a per app basis, or u can choose to entirely disable vibrations by completly decreasung vibration strength.
May I know where to find the option to decrease the vibration strength?
I'm using Mate 10 Pro

There is no setting to adjust "vibration strength".
But if you go to settings > Sound > you will notice in here there are two settings for vibration (single sim) or three settings if you are using 2 sims.
You will have to experiment with these variable settings to achieve what it is your trying to achieve.
You can turn on vibration for all apps in their individual settings and they will vibrate or not depending on what you do in the "master" settings I mentioned above.
However, if you want only certain apps to vibrate, or not, while leaving the master vibration turned on, then you will have to make those adjustments individually.
Thank you for all the replies.

That's where I'm stuck. I set the vibration ON in the app notification, since, I want the notification to be able to vibrate when I ask for in the master setting. But I don't find a way to choose only the sound but not the vibration in this case :/
The settings relative to the SIM are about calls, I don't really car about those one, it's more about messenger or WhatsApp, sometimes I just want them to "bip" without having the vibration that are not good with this phone, looks like a piece of metal that resonate in a metallic box. Somewhat awful in fact for my personal tastes.
I would gladly cut off the vibrations from the app notification, but there are some times, when the phone is into a bag or a pocket, were vibration is far better than sound.
WM10 and all WP previously had the simple vibration master toggle control on the sound volume panel that can be activated or not regardless of the sound volume and it was pretty convenient, would have been nice to have this simple toggle on android device too.

I am having a hard time trying to clearly understand what it is that you are trying to do but maybe this will help.....
For example I use Textra as my messaging app. I believe it is far better than the default app provided by Huawei.
Now open the phones master settings > sound > I have "Vibrate in silent mode" toggled ON, then next to "SIM 1 vibrates when ringing" I have toggled ON. Close settings.
Now in Textra > Settings > Customize notifications > scroll down to "Vibrate" and I have mine set to "Always"... however there are three other settings to choose from such as "Yes (except on silent)" or "Yes (only when on vibrate)" or "No". So you can take more granular control of when it will vibrate on receiving a text message. I highly recommend Textra! You will not be sorry!
Now let's look at Gmail as the next example. Open Gmail > tap top left hamburger icon > scroll down to settings > General settings > Manage notifications > under your email address is the word "Mail"...long press right on the word "Mail" itself...not on the toggle to the right but on the word "Mail". Now another "hidden" settings dialogue window will open and you will see an entry for "Always vibrate" as well as "Always pulse the notification light". This is where you can turn off vibration for Gmail while leaving it on for all other apps in the master setting.
Hope this helps!
Ok, so in fact, if the app does not allow a fine tune of the setting, we are screwed up?
For what I was looking for, here are an example with and old WP of mine:

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
First slider is for ringtone
Second slider is for app and media
And then, the toggle vibration ON or OFF
There is also a setting for each app to activate or not if vibration/sound will be played, but it's the master setting seen previously that control what is done.
You could then have your apps/call ring and vibrate, or only ring, or only vibrate, or nothing at all (silent mode, slider to 0 and vibration toggle off).
So when I have my phone in my pocket I just let the volume at max and Vibration ON (only authorized app would vibrate). But when I put my phone on my desk for work and I suddenly receive a lot of notifications through WhatsApp or messenger because a discussion is ongoing, I just lower the volume, and cut off the master vibration so it doesn't resonate on all the desk (it does more noise than the ringtone itself and it's really annoying).
Considering I often answer to the messenger discussion on the computer, it's nice to have the "bip" from the phone, but not the vibrations.
But in the same time, once I left my desk, I just have to press the vibration toggle to have all the authorized app vibrate when a notification came in.
That's what I was used to have and now looking for on the mate 10 pro.
I've found that Samsung have an setting "vibrate with ringtone" that cut/allow the vibration if ringtone volume is not shut down. That is exactly the mode missing here.
I hope I'm more clear with that example, I'm not really fluent in English, sorry for that.
Of for example whatsapp, open whatsapp, use 3 dot menu and choose settings, slect ringtone to none if u dont want and toggle vibration based on what you want, every app has its own settings inside its menu, not in the master settings.

So you telling me the only way to have the vibration quiet for 20 min is to pass 5 min to stop every app in its own setting, to do the opposite after, each time I want to change the behavious of my phone, so from 4 to 10 time a day? Oo
If u want all vibrations quite for 20bminutes go to master sound setting and tap OFF vibrate which will totally stop any app vibratioms as well and turn it back on when you need it.

I'm still confused. Where to find the toggle for vibration in the sound settings?
I'm attaching a screenshot for my sound settings options on my Mate 10 Pro

That's exactly what I'm looking for... but, I've absolutly no idea how to do it. Is it possible with EMUI 8? (thank you @mhamdto for the screenshot).
Yes just below silent mode there is option for vibrate in silent mode, do if u want all notifications off and vibrate off thrn enable silent mode and vibrate in silent mode as well but if u want it other way then silent mode off and vibrate on, and if u want to mute yhen turn sound all the wsy down and then mute option appears below the bar.

Correct me if I'm wrong. What you basically mean is if I want to enable vibration is to put my phone in silent mode. In other words, if the phone is not silent then you can't control the vibration from the sound settings
Ok, thank you all for the replies. It looks like it's impossible to control vibration with sound ON then. That's stupid but well, it's not like the phone was a high end one with a €800 price tag... Oh wait

It is entirely possible to control vibration when phone is unmuted, just play with the settings for a while and you will understand slowly.

I apologize, @mhamdto and I should be very stupid, could you please post a screen of your sound setting with sound ON and Vibration ON, and with sound ON and vibration OFF please. But without having to disable vibration on each app of course, cause we don't have time to disable 20 setting each time we want the vibration quiet but the sound ON.
What we are looking for should take less than 10sec to do like with other phone, so it should not be hard to do two quick screenshots of the setting.
I am just wondering if I had this issue with .125 firmware and if it's not new with .128

@Hildr no need to apologize. We are on the same side here. I'm attaching the screenshots as requested. P.s. I'm on build 8.0.0.129

Ho, sorry, I was asking for @lingarajug, I did notice you were looking for the same thing as me. And yeah, the parameter in your screenshot adjust the vibration only in silent mode like you said. I wonder how @lingarajug adjust vibration with sound ON...
Edit: Contacted the Huawei Support, they told me to disable "Vibrate when ringtone". So I think the setting should be there but is missing on some firmware, I've sent them a screenshot of my sound setting and will see their answer. Hopefully the setting will be back with a future update.
