Ram issues - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I don't know if it's always been like this but, I just noticed that my phone is saying I only have 855 megabytes of ram. Is that how much there really is, or is a portion of the ram going to the gpu like if it where an onboard video card on a laptop?

Did you read the FAQ?

Obviously not..

Nothing in there pertaining to the issues I'm having. Am I posting this in the wrong forum?

Thats just the way it is. And I don't see anything in the faq related to this. Theres an explanation somewhere, but I can't remember where I saw it.

Actually, i have to admit, i don't believe i have seen this in the FAQ.
As it is, yes, most likely the difference in ram is that the GPU is using some for itself. This can be tweaked via the kernel, so its never a sure answer exactly how much is actually taken.

Isn't there also a dedicated allotment of RAM for the video recording and audio?

Theres an explanation somewhere, but I can't remember where I saw it.

Here is a discussion on it in the i9100 forum, seems to elaborate on it a bit.

Yeah, I know it was in here somewhere because I remember reading it. Thought it was in the FAQ. My bad.

[Q] Can't install apps to phone from Android Market website. Is it just me?

If anyone else is running MIUI 2.1.13 with the latest SiyahKernel, could you please try downloading/installing some app or another from the Android market website? Because I live in a 2g area, I have to download my apps from the website. Any time I try to search for an app in the Market on my phone, my connection times out. I have no wi-fi for the vast majority of my day, so that's also out.
I would really like to determine if this is a known issue or if this is an isolated problem. If it's isolated, I'll reflash in hopes that it will work. If not, I'd obviously rather not.
Did you look in that ROM's thread in Dev to see if anyone else reported a similar issue?
I searched the MIUI thread but didn't find anything. It's possible that I missed it, I suppose, but I don't know what else to search for other than what I already have.
Try to enable sync on all Google related services and then using the Market on the website.
If its turned off then it probably won't get pushed to your device.

Did you before you made this jerk response? Or did you just assume that help was already in that thread.
I made sure that all google services are free to sync as they wish. That didn't do it. I re-flashed MIUI. That didn't do it either, unfortunately.

New users come to xda and ask simple, common questions on a regular basis. It's not uncommon for someone with a low post count to dive straight into posting, rather than utilize the search button.

It didn't look like a jerk response to me. It looked like a reasonable response. He was merely pointing him in that direction to see if it might have been answered, especially since a lot of people on here don't bother to search.
As for the topic, my experience with MIUI is that all the apps never show up in the market, and is part of the reason I've never really stuck with it. It has to do with google not recognizing it as one of the standard UIs on their list for our phone, therefore not all the apps are shown. At least that's what I've seen explained in the past. Hope this helps.

Unlike your response, there was nothing jerky about mine. The guy has 8 posts. It's possible he might not have even thought to look where I pointed him. I said nothing derogatory to him. Any perceived jerkiness is in your head as evidenced by the two following posters. Don't bother with an apology as your screen name fits you perfectly.
Thread cleaned up...
Have the same issue as the author of this thread. Using Nexus S, Kalimchoaz's Rom v. 2.1. Does anyone have any solutions?
I was able to do it just fine on WIUI 2.1.13 -- I probably got around 80 apps that way. However, I was redownloading them and had previously already gotten them, so it may be different. I no longer have WIUI, so I can't check if I have your issue. I guess MIUI may be different than WIUI...

CM7 alpha and audio/headphones

I have described my headphones issue using 1.4.0/1.4.1 here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1490780
Are any CM7 testers experiencing this?
Please don't create multiple threads for the same issue. People will respond to your first post if they have something to say.
Okay, but while the issue is the same, the question I'm asking is different and thought it warranted its own thread. I would have asked my question in the CM7 thread but I do not have sufficient privileges.
Does the issue exist on a different ROM?
We do not have different roms yet, and CM7 has not been released for use.
One thing that I have noticed is that there is no shortage of forum cops on these boards... but surprisingly few people willing to answer questions. I understand the mindset... spoonfeeding newbs just empowers them to brick their devices. But this doesn't seem like an unreasonable question, even if he originally brought the issue up in another post.

I agree 100%. It seems the nt forum is full of tough guys who also pretend to be smart asses, but actually these guys are no help whatsoever. So I try to help when necessary and be quiet when I need to be. Other than that this forum is turning into a joke with these guys.
As for the headphone issue, I'm sorry but I'm no help. I'm currently only using my tablet for games and reading.

Agreed. I understand not wanting to clog up the boards, but talking about an issue in more detail again makes it that much easier for everyone else in the world to find information about. Let a moderator decide what's allowed where.
Anyway, yeah I'm stumped about the popping noise, too. At first I thought it was just my headphones, but it must be part of the NT hardware doing it if everyone else is having trouble, too. Doesn't seem like we'll be able to be change it.
Running CM7 early alpha here, still have the pops . I never noticed it until you pointed it out. I always blamed my old headphones. Hopefully the test version with the new kernel helps this issue.
Thanks to everyone who commented positively.

Unfortunately the same thing happens when on the latest CM7 build. So it appears to be a hardware issue.
I was noticing pops and clicks from my headphones even when nothing was playing and screen was off

Anyone has the HTC One X?

Hi,
I´ve been toying with the idea of getting the One X and I´m wondering if anyone here has it. I´ve had the GS1 and presently I have the GS2. I watch A LOT of video with it, so the display and multimedia capabilities are a huge deal for me. The GS2 does stellar on both. It plays any formart/codec you may throw at it natively (no need for special players) and there is no need to go on about its´ the mind blowing gorgeous super amoled screen.
Other than these 2 major concerns I´m wondering if you can really notice the benefits of the quad core processor on day to day activities. I´ve watched several benchmarks where the GS2 was not far behind.
So far i dont see why we need a quad core phone~ most apps even cant fully use the dual core phone~~
doesnt matter

Why isn´t this the relevant forum? I know many many people who own several high end smartphones and latest addition is not necessarily the main one. There may also be people here who bought the ONE X and decided to go back to the GS2.
I really don´t understand why people need to pollute threads with pointless comments that have nothing to do with what is being discussed.

i agree. A forum entited Samsung Galaxy SII Question and Answers is quite clearly the correct section to post a thread about the HTC One X
Its obvious, cant see why anyone would think otherwise

I agree. Dual core is perfectly fine. I´m enticed by the screen size and the fact that it is supposed to be REALLY good. For this price range I could also go with the Skyrocket HD (slightly smaller screen BUT super amoled...dual core and expandable memory via micro sd card).

i read perfectly well, you it seems do not. At what point in your post are you asking a question or needing an answer about the Samsung Galaxy S II?
When they create a thread called "General Comparisons" I´ll post there. I´ve explained once that what I´m looking for it´s the opinion of GS2 users...which logically I should get HERE.
even though this forum is for the s2, its ok to have posts like this so we s2 users could discuss about a phone newer than ours
ive been edging about this phone since its a quad and a better screen, but the idea of no micro sd slot, fixed battery and 8mp camera isnt a winner for me, i need room for my CWM recoveries and a spare battery to use while the other is charging, i wouldnt care if the S2 had a better Ppi pixel density but 217 is too low for me in browsing.
its currently not worth upgrading, i dont think a quad will improve the experience on android yet

Again, I´m not interested in the general opinion, I´m interested in the opinion of GS users who moved to or from the One X.

How do you ID resource hogs?

Is there a way to watch CPU or I/O demand of applications on the android. It's pretty obvious when one app goes rogue, but what if you phone isn't totally slowed, but something is off. Any way to help identify which apps. require the more resource to then consider removal?

Really?
Is it wrong to hope the learned people of this forum would share the top 3 or so apps that perform this functionality as opposed to searching endlessly on Google for something that looks like it would work?

Is it wrong to hope that People follow Rule 1 on a developing website and find information themselves that has been discussed numerous times over the last few years.

Do you expect people prove that they have done hours of searching on the site before posting a question?
BTW, your search suggestion didn't even address my question.
My question has to do with rogue applications that slow down my phone, I'm not looking for applications that drain the battery.
I'm assuming the apps resource utilization:. Memory, CPU, Network or other is the root cause. Some apps could potentially cause
phone sluggishness without killing the battery; constant network pinging or other buggy behaviors.
For example: I've learned that the issue may have to do with android memory management, in general it's apparently slow.
This would make sense because I've loaded quite a bit of applications on my phone by using link2sd. I was expecting a performance boost now that I've moved the majority of my applications off of the phone and freeing up internal phone storage. However, this hasn't helped.
I'm not just looking for apps, but also suggestions or tips and tricks on how to figure phone performance issues...
Regards,
Mike

Now had you made your OP such a post then my reply may have been different or I wouldn't have replied at all, but even so, Android isn't new and searching is going to give you better answers by reading what's been posted before which you seem to have been doing, which only takes you so far. Have you tried build.prop or init.d scripts to try and speed things up?

[Q] Is SIII worth rooting?

Hi guys,
I've just bought myself a new SGSIII, and as a huge android development fan I instantly started to think of rooting it. I've moved from a 'grandpa' i9000, which was slow and laggy, so rooting and installing custom ROMs was my only hope. But on the i9300 there is no lagg at all, the phone is flying. So the question is - is S3 worth rooting? What advantages and how much of them could you exclude? (I don't count JB 4.2 as an advantage as I've been using it on my old phone for quite a long time and even got bored by it..)
Thanks!

It's still not what I asked . Of course rooting does the same thing, but what I'm interested in is the opinion of S3's users about it - how much of a boost was it, are custom ROMs more handy than stock and so on. These things differ.

It is what you asked. rooting opens the same doorways to new features and a higher level of control on any phone to the same degree. IMHO every phone should be rooted for these reasons.

And I want to know what these doorways lead to. Maybe OCing or installing/uinstalling any particular app/kernel/ROM gives a performance boost. I'm not interested in the fact that I am able to browse or make changes in more directories than normally. I want to know if it's possible to make a difference in S3's performance and how big the difference would be.
Work it out yourself man.

I have updated the link JJE posted. Have a look towards the end "the advantages of root".
Yes you can alter performance and those alterations can be construed as perceivable.
