This is annoying they dont have 4G in Hawaii yet.
but my phone says 4G
damn u ATT and ur false adversting HSPA+ is not 4G....
really att does to much to lie and cheat u...
such as blocking google wallet -_-
makes me wanna unlock and go t mobile ><
i know its a stupid thing to complain about its just a icon blah blah blah...
but hey if it says 4G then i want my damn 4G speeds not HSPA+ speed att
and no i dont hate my phone i LOVE it
i just HATE ATT
there's a few post about this already if you would have searched you would have known that when its just the 4G icon its HASP+ and then when there is lte under the 4G icon you're on 4G
try searching next time
Come on man, you seriously didn't know that att calls hspa+ 4g? sprint calls Wimax 4g etc... Not false advertising, they clearly call out hspa+ vs. lte in the commercials

Did you even read his post? He knows fully well anything you could tell him. According to carriers HSPA+ is 4g.
Damn, quit *****ing! Would you rather just have hsdpa without the option of hspa+? And It boggles my mind how you would consider going to T-Mobile knowing damn well you would be on edge. You knew at&t calls hspa+ 4g, they are not trying to trick anyone. I'm sure you would rather have that then edge or 3g man. So I don't get why you hate them for that.

I do wish it would show the exact mode it is in
G - GSM

So you're saying T-Mobile doesn't do false advertising? What is T-Mo 4G using?
Hint, T-mo is the first one to label HSPA+ as 4G.
Yes tmobile is the reason that hspa+ is referred to as 4g. Once they started marketing it like that, the other carriers hands are basically forced. They can't have consumers thinking that only Tmobile has that speed.

There is no need for link. It was widely reported back then. At first, ITU defined only the LTE Advanced (100mbps+) can be called 4G. Then all carriers world wide complained. Then, ITU changed its mind and let carriers call whatever they want as 4G.
4G as a term is meanless these days. It's a name only to the clueless mass. It's like in the early days of gaming console, there were 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit, 64-bit (and even 128-bit IIRC) game consoles. Nowsdays, none of the consoles on the market mention this anymore.

I dont see how you compare consoles graphics capability with the network speeds. What else are they suppose to call it? Faster network? And I would like a link because last I heard 4g was technically only LTE.

Welcome to the machine.
And I completely agree. If you're on HSPA+, it should say "H+".
4g = LTE. plain and simple.
I'm amazed people are *****ing about such simple things as 4g icons and not serious issues with the phone. Put a 1x on my screen and give me the same 7-12mb/s speed and I'll take it. Seriously people, if you don't like it, start cooking roms and fix the icons. My skyrocket had 3g icon for h+ and 4g for lte. Not that I cared because I'm aware enough to tell the difference anyway.

My point is calling a network 4G is similar to the old days calling a game console 64-bit. Neither have any relationship to the speed of the network or speed of the game console.

Just got off phone with Motorola and they confirmed the Photon has a LTE chip installed! I called sprint and they said it didn't. Somebodies lying, my bet is sprint.
My guess is that the Motorola rep is confusing that for 4G in general. I highly doubt the Photon has LTE.
Now, I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if it does, but I imagine that would have been in the FCC certification.

Granted I'm not willing to doante my phone to such a process but I mean phones break, you'd think someone who broke their Photon had to have tore it apart by now to see its guts.
I doubt they would have added an expensive piece of hardware just for the heck of it. The fact that it isn't touted as a feature to"future proof" the phone leads me to assume it isn't there.

The hole in that thought is the matrix is on ATT(GSM) which is different from VZW in more ways then one.
The VZW references is due to the you can roam in VZW and a possible launch of the phone on VZW.
It seems that this phone has a lot of Q's surronding the radio freq's it uses so we are going to need to find a good tear down and look to that for answers.
Ok so in case people didn't know, LTE uses sim cards for the 4G. But it can't be in the photon, sprint wont have it for some time.
My buddy at Motorola replied to me "wimax". So I guess its not LTE ready and that moto rep is misunderstanding that sprints 4g is different. After all, this is the first moto android phone on sprint

Plug the photon in and look in device manager, it has an LTE modem period. There is no argument here, find it for yourself. Sprint will have LTE but not for awhile, as for the Photon working on it, who knows, but I am damn sure that it is capable of it. If you are asking a Sprint Rep any questions about a phone, 97.38782% of them don't know much about them, yes there are a few who actually do their homework on each and every phone they come across but that is few and far between. ( And in case you work at Sprint and you are reading this, don't take it personal, I'm just saying that most reps sell phones, they don't study them and know them inside and out) As for Motorola, who knows, it all depends on who you talk to, but I would believe one of them over a random Sprint rep who 'sells' phones for a living, being that Motorola actually built the thing.
But all you really need to do is plug it in and look for yourself.

Now that is interesting indeed
It just might have a LTE radio. Maybe Sprint's plans are starting to show up in current and future phones? Here is an excerpt:
If Sprint were to tap into Clearwire’s LTE network it wouldn’t gain any additional coverage beyond its current 4G footprint. It would gain additional capacity, but it would come at a price. Since Clearwire’s LTE wouldn’t even cover existing WiMAX markets completely, Sprint will need to deploy dual-mode WiMAX and LTE devices. That’s already a tall order for device makers, but Clearwire is using an unpaired spectrum configuration for LTE, meaning Sprint will need LTE chips not only for Clearwire’s 2.5 GHz frequencies but in a time-division duplexing (TDD) mode that no other operator uses in the U.S.

There may be some logic to this from Moto perspective...
It 4g and it a world phone...it suports cdma and gsm...
But is it also the first "4g" "world phone"? having both wimax and LTE ?(you got the sim like verzion LTE phones need)
So for Moto one hardward build for all world markets...and would also make it one hell of a development phone for google android to test everything on
Would the EVO 3d and Samsung Galaxy 2 people crap if true....
A phone with all these radios cdma, gsm, wimax and LTE would be hacker heaven
Who knows could be source of unlocked 4g issues that just the Photon seem to have ... that bootstrap has an extra radio to set up
===One other thing I recall Sprints Touch pro 2 "world phone" was not certified for GSM by FCC for US so radios were not listed on FCC doc...but it had them
Other thing in all the Photon "tear down" ive seen...ive never seen the chips because of how the lable sits in the battey compartment covers the chips...you would need to destroy the phone to see
International business times were comparing the galaxy nexus and photon in every catagory and said about connectivity
"Connectivity: Galaxy Nexus has HSDPA 21 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps and 4G LTE support. The Photon 4G has Rev.A up to 3.1 Mbps, HSDPA, HSUPA, along with 4G LTE support."
I just find it weird how people dont differ wimax from LTE . Link for the rest of the comparison on the bottom if interested

Exactly. AT&T did it with the iPhone. Even though it only uses their 3g network, it uses the latest 3g technology, so the phone will say 4g even though it does not use the true 4g LTE part of their network.
It's stupid. We all know that Sprint's network speeds consistently are subpar, but we stick with them based on price and having unlimited service.
I didn't realize every other carrier was guilty. It doesn't seem right though. Oh well.

Folks, before I get flamed for posting that and before a Moderator closes my thread, please read what I have to say.
I live in Atlanta, where LTE supposedly is everywhere. Or so I thought "supposedly" when I had the Evo because ever since I got it, I've only seen it connected once(I thought maybe it just wasn't available yet.)
Then I thought maybe it was my phone since people were reporting getting 4G speeds a lot in Atlanta, so I argued my way into getting another one from Sprint. Same thing. Never connected.
Then I got myself a Galaxy Nexus. The phone was great (til I broke it) and it was always connected to 4G.
(I even made a thread about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846041)
When my brother came to visit me, I even tested his Evo LTE. Same thing.
Then I broke my Galaxy Nexus and bought a Galaxy S III. To my surprise, it also always connected to 4G.
I went to Sprint and compared it to an Evo LTE to see if that one would connect. I checked the settings to make sure LTE is on and it still wouldn't connect.
Even my 3G speeds on the Samsung devices are better.
Thus, I learned so far that Samsung's antenna's are a LOT better than HTC antenna.
(FYI, I do not work or am endorsed by Samsung in any means. Matter of fact, I think their phones feel like cheap plastic pieces of sh*t and I wish I could have my HTC again (in working condition.))
Maybe we need to pressure HTC into putting in better antennas in our phones.
Are you sure you were on LTE on the Samsung phones? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the EVOLTE is an LTE only phone and doesn't connect to Sprint's legacy 'faux-g' hspa network while I believe the Sammy phones do. My first Samsung phone was the intercept ( a miserable failure) and my second was the nexus s 4g(terrible reception but great phone). I've had much better luck with HTC phones when it comes to hardware.
I've only been to ATL once on a business trip and managed to connect to LTE before Sprint officially launched it so I was impressed
Edit: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/HTC-EVO-4G-LTE,Samsung-Galaxy-S-III/phones/7019,6330
^Here is a decent source to prove it. I blame Sprint for being d***headed enough to insist on having an exclusive version of the One-X with features that didn't leave enough room for all the radios we need. They should have just taken the One-X as it was intended by HTC. Personally there us no 4g in my area at all so the Evo works fine picking up 3g

I see where you're coming from but yes these are both LTE.
Galaxy Nexus was Sprint's first LTE phone launched, then Evo and I believe then GS3.
And the speeds I'm getting (in good areas) are 20MB plus.
At work, I get a constant 3-5MB.
So I do not think it's T-Mobile's HSPA that I'm connecting to but actual LTE.
Even if it's true, false, or up for debate, you won't get a good discussion on it here.

Yeah that's what I thought too. Isn't T-Mobile the only one left with HSPA?
And honestly, Samsung vs. HTC aside, the problem is more on the carrier than HTC... Or both I guess. I used 2 friend's One X and GS3 next to each other in hspa+ 4G and they both were very close as far as load times. The GS3 person ended up swapping in her gs3 for the One X after seeing the software difference though Sprint just forced HTC to skimp on the radios with the extra evo features jammed in.

Well, I could be wrong then.. Whatever tech they used for their old fauxG is what I'm talking about. Is there really no phone that can use both?

At&t uses a hspa+ network for 4G as well as LTE.
The connection issues are well documented and have been known to Sprint since at least April.

Was not aware. It's not just signal issues. It's HTC signal issues, correct??

You're talking WiMax.
And GS3 is not WiMax compatible.

Just be aware, on GS3 you'll still have to pay the $10 fee.
Only way you won't is if you switch to a non 4G WiMax or 4G LTE phone.

Honestly though, both phones are getting threads like this daily so I'm having a hard time believing any signal related complaints anymore.

I'm honestly torn between HTC and Samsung, sometimes. I love how an HTC phone feels in my hands, nice and solid. Sense looks good but can sometimes be a performance hog. Samsung does some pretty unique stuff to their devices (multiscreen, s-pen, etc) and I like that. I hate how the whole damn thing is just a bar of plastic, just don't like what it feels like compared to HTC. But software wise, Tocuhwiz isn't that bad, IMO. It's much closer to AOSP than any other OEMs version of Android.
But if you want a good read on the upcoming struggles with Samsung's Exynos-based devices, read this:

Start around post 16, some really good info from a CM dev. I like Samsung for always getting out their source early, but if it's broken and doesn't compile, then it doesn't matter. And if they can't help with any low level processor stuff because it's proprietary to them, they're not helping the community as much as they try to show that they are. Just my 2 cents.
Radio aside, how do you like the GS3 compared to the EVOLTE?

Don't really wanna answer cuz I think you're a POS but no, I don't.
I wish I had my Evo back sometimes.
Very solid phone. GS3 freezes. My keyboard can't keep up with my typing and I end up with words like "whuoi dasu unjhoos" (this matters to me. I text a LOT.. like 500 or so texts per day.)
The speaker phones sounds terrible.
It's durable as a cold butter stick.
Feels very plastic-y.
However pros:
Service,
More developers available for it on XDA,
Very light.

LOL!
I've actually come close to trading my EVO for a GS3 a couple times. No LTE here, so that's never factored in.
Basically 3 things have kept me from doing so:
1. People want way too much +$
2. Most that I've come across not in mint condition
3. I'm lazy
Oh, and also been trying to sell a car on CL, so haven't reposted my EVO for GS3 ad in awhile.
Doesn't most of the EVO's LTE connection problem stem from software? Bc last I heard the next ota is going to address it?
Personally, I won't have LTE for another few months at the earliest. So, it doesn't matter much to the majority of the US. Granted there are a lot of EVO users in the LTE startup cities. But does this mean a mass exodus from the EVO for 4g connectivity?
I can wait to see if an ota fixes the issues. I mean what are we gonna do, go to Verizon? Hahahaha.
