charging paused, voltage too high - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello,
i have now a week long on my sgs2 every 2 minutes a message on my screen : charging paused, voltage too high.
i have flasht my phone allot but on stock rom(I9100BUKJ3) i have the same problem.
When the battery of my phone is full and I disconnect it, he keeps saying that he is connected and full.
i can't find anyhere what the solution for this is.
have somebody any idea?
sorry for my bad English.
greet beun

I got the same thing did u figure it out yet?
It started this morning when I unplug it i see the message every 2 minutes or so.
I have a feeling that it might be the battery but I don't have another to try it and I don't feel like buying a new one just to test.
Anyone know anything about it? I searched in Google for about an hour but this post was the only relevant thing about it

have you tried a different charger ? might work

Won't make a difference it gives the error when it is unplugged
Now Fx. It is nice an silent while on the charger. But when I take it out is gives the error

flashing doesn't have any sense so i'm afraid that it is a hardware problem.
i think its a battery control chip or something like that.
have somebody good experience with a situation like this?

Same problem here. It only happened when I started flashing ICS roms.
It goes away eventually, usually when i get down to about 60% charged or so. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all.

Same here, although it only happens when I use the car charger... both of the car chargers cause this issue. The wall charger however is fine. I noticed it happens with the ICS leaks from sammobile.

Just started happening to me too!
Get a flashing battery icon continuously too.
Can't connect via usb mode too because it says theres a cable already connected!
Any have any ideas on what to do?

Have someone this problem to who never flasht his phone?
I think that we made the problem self by flashing wrong kernel or bootloader from a 4.0.3 maybe

Charge
When your phone is 100%battery then he have 4200 mv and then it decreases. its not that when battery is 0 he say - mv but.. i sugegst to you that you reboot your phone into recovery mode if you rooted, then wipe battery stats..
if nat root then download app name battery calibrator from market and then charge your phone to 100% and then click calibrate. it may improve your solution to problam. so try it.. ok man thats all i can say.. best of luck..
i sugegst that after you fix the problam hopefully you root de phone and intall checkrom hd v6 and then you install speedmod kernel. it will improve your battery time by lot i say in guarantee.. ok man so you do that..
bye then

Wiping battery stats does not make sense.
I buy today a usb jig to reset my bootloader en after that i go flash my phone to 100% stock. If this not helps i bring my phone back for repair.

Restored my Gingerbread backup and the problem seems to have gone away.. charge icon is showing a charge without stopping. Seems like only the leaked ICS ROMs are exhibiting this problem?

I also have this message in ics but in gingerbread it does not work good. On this moment i walk with my dog and the phone says that im usb connected i think that the problem is lower than the os. Its the bootloader or hardware i think
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA

OK, after a few days of observing my phone I can say this:
The problem persists even in ginger bread but the error does not show, open the dialer and write *#*#4636#*#* go into battery settings and see the battery state (tested on cm7)
When the battery drops below 15% it behaves normally until charged again (however it might just be time, I drop to 15% in about 10 hours )
It seems that the mV is irrelevant, on charge it went to 4213mV and said battery state good (after the 15% drop thing) but it said over voltage at 3558mV (not in charge)
That's about all I could see, ill get a jig myself and see where that brings me, although if anyone has a spare battery to see if the problem is that or something else it would be nice to know the results
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

Same problem here, started yesterday after flashing foxHound ics, reverted back to GB, as stated previously the notification goes away but the problems still there, also if i reboot my phone then the battery healths good for about 10 minutes even if the voltage is above 4000mv, but about 10 minutes later it says voltage too high even when its lower at about 3800.
Flashed another rom and its been alright for about 6 hours, will test a bit more and post back.

Just a heads up guys, the issue returned even on GB so i flashed back ics, took out my battery cleaned the usb port with rubbing alcohol and compressed air, put the battery back in and now alls fine charged to 100% no issues drained it overnight watching movies and charged it again to 100% no issues. Not sure if it was the ics rom that fixed it or the cleaning. anyhow seems to be fine now

Hmm sounds good, but just to be sure, type this in the dialer *#*#4636#*#* and in the battery menu look at battery health, and what from are you on? Really hope that it fixes it

Sudden battery loss after crash

I was playing a game when my phone crashed and locked up. I had to restart my phone and upon restarting my battery is now at 20%. My battery was originally at 85% and I was playing the game for less than 5 minutes. Why did I lose so much battery power in such a short time and is it harmful for my battery? The name of the game is E Warrior

Your battery did not actually lose all that at once, all that happened is either a change in the way battery fuel gauge is bring reported or a corruption of the battery stats being kept.
Either way a couple charge cycles and the gauge reporting will get back on track.

Not even a couple of charge cycles. The fuelgauge should "converge" within 1-2 hours. To make it converge faster:
Turn off phone
Pull battery for 5-10 minutes to put it in a "relaxed" state (no recent heavy charge/discharge)
Put it back in and power on
Also, what was the raw battery voltage? It's impossible to tell whether 85% was a false-high or 20% was a false-low without knowing the raw voltage.
I have left my sgs off for a few hours now and it hasn't made a difference. I just got home and plugged it into the charger and I will wait and see what happens...
I've had the same thing happen to me this morning.
Phone was Idle, full after being charged overnight.
I was checking the web to make sure I had all my ducks in a row before
loading up the Unammed 1.04 ROM.
Tried to wake up the phone, nothing.
Tried holding the power button a little longer, nothing.
I plugged it in and tried holding it longer yet, finally.
Phone crashed itself but hard.
Woke it back up with a heavy dent in the available battery.
Dropped something like 60% over the course of an hour or less?
I was just about to panic.
Added some more juice, while I made my backups and copied in the new ROM.
I'm not sure what that was all about.
I've had this happen recently...

I had this happen once. I plugged it in after the battery level plunged some 50% after an app crash. But as soon as I plugged it in, it seemed like it started correcting itself. The charge level would go up by a couple of % points every minute and converged to the right value within an hour or two.

Happened to me last night. Went from 30% to 12% after a crash/restart. You can see the small bit of red on the right.
So does anyone know for sure if the battery actually drained that fast or is it some kind of glitch?
Firepac said:

It is not physically possible for the battery to drain that much that fast. Now in an extreme battery failure you could lose that much capacity, but that were happening your battery would be pretty much shot. don't worry that is not happening to you.
The fuel gauge reporting just got reset and if it was off before it will be closer now. If it is off now, it will work itself back out very shortly on its own.

I would agree with the above. It was annoying but I'm not yet very.concerned. if it happens again or becomes a regular thing then I'm going to be a bit annoyed.
I got my sgs2 2 weeks ago, today I noticed something weird:
I unplugged my phone at 9:15am (100% battery), and at 2:45pm it was at 10%. I am not sure why it died that fast.
I am using some app's which need to be synchronized, but I dont think they can cause this. (FB, Email, Weather). please advice.
How about this usage after installing a new Rom and a theme.
I do think it's the theme I have applied, but it gets too hot too even not being used. I'm not sure what the Rom is, I am using the one the phone comes with.
My phone did this last night for the first time, Ive been catching dolphin browser using a lot of resources. I forgot to kill it last night, battery dropped 50% in 2hrs.
I have removed the theme I had applied and it came to normal already. But I am concerned why it did happen, is it not supposed to support themes like GoLauncher?
Only worry if the problem persisted. Use the battery then charge it full. You likely won't have any issues.

I noticed the same thing with Dolphin browser and if you go into settings and activate the Google or Facebook accounts to be used in conjunction with Dolphin that it will put your phone into overdrive and heat it and drain the battery in about 3+ hours...So I would avoid using this if you like using your phone the whole day!

Is expected to have the phone hot during charging? I am charging it now and it is getting hot even though I am not using it. I am really worried about this.
Please let me know if this is a normal behavior or if it's not.

There's already threads discussing safe charging temps. 50°+ celcius is bad and 70° is deadly to the battery. Phone can handle much more. Download a battery temperature app.

New S2 user - horrible battery performance?

I got my S2 a few days ago and flashed Cf-Root and the latest checkrom a couple of days ago. I knew battery life was a big issue with S2 so i thought i'd check how mine was performing.
I left the phone charging through the night and after unplugging the battery is down to 80% after just 5 hours. What makes things worse is that the phone has been unused for about 95% of that time. All i've done is send one SMS and flick through my settings a couple of times.

Display being 44% is puzzling since its only been on 30 minutes at about 50% brightness. Android OS is 39% and when clicking on that it says it has been used just 22 minutes (CPU total).
I a real S2 and Android noob so i really have no idea whats going on. This cant be normal surely?

Your display has used 44% of the power used = 20% total so your display in five hours has used about 9% of the battery .
Search all the battery posts and read them for clues .
Start with Better Battery stats thread .
better battery stats .

You also probably have a load of stuff connecting in the background .

Try siyah kernel 2.1.1 version. Its been the best for me
I've installed Better Batter Stats although i dont really know how to use it and interpret the information. I've included some random screen captures in case they're important.
Heya, I see that you have WiFi on pretty much and that's quite a battery drainer. It shifted my battery consumption from 1-3% while sleeping to a whooping 25+% (about 6-8 hours of sleep)... make sure you turn off wifi and data services when you're not actively using your phone

If i turn off wifi and data when not actively using my phone wont i stop receiving various updates and such? Is it normal for people to have turn off wifi and data when not using the phone?

Yeah, but you can get them when you use your phone again. I can't speak for everyone but I never have wifi on while my screen is off, it wastes battery and I don't have a social life/need to keep my Internet on

After doing some reading one thing that may be causing this is not calibrating my battery.
When i received the phone it came without about 60% of charge so i just plugged it straight in to my PC figuring i'll let it charge to full while i play around on it. Unless i'm mistaken this was a bad thing to do?
I've downloaded Battery Calibration from the market and i'm currently waiting for the battery to charge to 100% before running it. Hopefully it'll help things.

The best way to calibrate the battery is to actually charge to 100% (make sure the phone is off) then unplug the battery for about 90+ seconds, then plug it bin and use your phone normally until the battery is depleted to 3-7% then charge fully. BTW I HIGHLY doubt that's the PROBLEM.

So once i've calibrated the battery and find that that isn't the problem how do i go about investigating what is the problem? I'm far too much of a noob to work it myself
I'm considering flashing back to stock firmware and seeing what happens with that.
Reading numerous threads on these forums I've found out that there is absolutely no need to calibrate the battery in SGS2 with any external programs / processes. The battery calibrates and maintains itself during its lifetime (something about a controller chip being integrated inside them).
If I may recommend, flash SiyahKernel , apply the battery optimizations through CWM (install zip from sdcard), and just work normally with the phone for a few days, making sure you remove all unnecessary applications and turning off data services whenever you don't use the phone.
And if you still get about a day of battery with moderate usage, it's very good for you... the stock battery just doesnt live that long with the powerful hardware that is in the phone

HELP!!

I'm no expert, but is sure does sound like a hardware problem, specifically the usb plug of your phone.
Better wait until further evaluation from this awesome community, but be prepared to send it in to Samsung service center.
Edit: perhaps try a different battery? Or try to plug it in the pc and see if that does anything, I'm really not sure.

Try downloading Battery Monitor Widget.it should give you an idea how much current(mA) your phone is getting(during charge) or consuming(when on battery).im suspecting EITHER something is eating too much power OR your charger is not delivering enough current.that is,if your phone shows its charging when you plug in either charger or USB but not increasing in charge level.

give it sometime to build a database of your power charge/consumption.by default,it checks the current every 10mins.so in an hour, you should have a history of at least 6 checks.you can also put a 1x1 widget in homescreen with at least the current(mA) and consumption(%/hr) so you would be able to monitor the current without going into the app all the time.give it an hour of battery use and another hour of charge.should give you an idea.the Estimates tab will give you an idea of what process eats power during USE and during screen off.

yup, which seems weird cause 13.5%/hr consumption is roughly equivalent to surfing the web which indicates either your phone is eating up too much power therefore cancelling your charge or your phone is not charging at all.
Try charging with cell off.
We'll know if it's a s/w issue or Hardware

my conclusion is the batt maybe has worn out and affected the hardware..guys..i reminds u..keep a good care of u battery.charge it well..dont let it die till 0% often...an advice from a broken heart CM10 lwm users..
I'm open with any others suggestion to fix this issue before i ride with another phone..the truth is..i love this phone so much..and now its running a latest CM10 from fxp.I'm feelin glorious until this satan came out from its grave(batt issue)..Sayonara..
[NEW UPDATE]
after a month struggling in this maniac..finally.. my batt has cured..
found this fix myself..
1.just use my phone normally..charge it even it reach 100% in 5 minutes..
2.but this time I've opened tge rear cover..when it reach at 100%,pull out the battery..and then, put in back..the battery level will show at 50~60%.and let it charge..
3..do it again anf again..
after a week do this radical move..my battery suddenly hve fixed..i mean FIXED.. now i will enjoy watching my battery drop and charge like a normal phone will do..xD
i will make a thread for this..not want to begging for thanks.. i just want ti share..before u sent ut phone to service center..

hii, its a very common problem faces by people running custom roms.
the solution is to download a battery callibration app from play store. ensure you have 100% battery, and then open the app, and press callibrate.
click thanks to say thanks. :good::good:
I hve mentioned that earlier.a hve calibrated the battry..and this is not my first custom roms installing experience..
But this prob first happen to me.
I have done all calibrating procedures..but,no luck:banghead:
Btw.thx in advance.

Yup,
I've had the same issue with a cm10 ROM. Wiping battery stats in cwm was the solution, I've never had to re-callibrate the battery
Has done it...but no luck becoz wiping batterystats dun affect the battery or anything..its just a stats that will show u app that eat ur battery..
.btw..thx in advance..

Completely drain the battery...
The red led should blink and phone should not start...
Then try switching on the phone 6-7 times to ensure its completely dead...
Plug it in to a wall charger...enter cwm immediately as the phone starts wipe battery stats..and ensure the phone charges to 100% continuously without a break..
I had an lww with optimax Rom which had a problem and this sol worked..

thx bro..but wiping battery stat dont make anything at all..just fully drain off tge battery..and do an offline charging without a break and don't turn on the phone while charging.. it should calibrated itself..
but my prob here getting more worse thAn that..thx btw.

Hello there! I've been experiencing the same problem for a week already. Can you tell me about your method in more details? Please, I'm starting to fell desperate!

[Q] battery leakage?

Hello guys,
As the title says, I too am running into some battery trouble (shocker, I know). I'd like to point out that first I did my research in the HOW+ forums + faqs. So, here's the situation:
Today with 80% of battery i played sonic dash for 45min. After that It shows 40% left. I shut down the phone. Put it in the freezer for 5mins (why not?) then turned it on again. Then it shows less than 16% at startup.
Two weeks earlier i used Navigon gps for 1hour on a full battery, after that i had 50% left. Restarted the phone and it showed 40% and afterwards started going down fast as hell in 1 hour without me turning the screen on. Seriously, at the end I had the 4 low battery alerts in a quick row (14%, 9%, 3%, 1% and then shutdown in 5-10minutes).
I bought the phone in march and used it heavily at first. I was all about thd games (which all push the phone to its limits) + occasional big downloads + uzipping heavy files. Then later i calmed down and mostly used the phone in the evenings before sleep: loads of browsing + youtube + emulators (which, all three combined, don't drain the battery that much even after a long time).
The phone has been rooted for 1 month. I'm still on stock rom. I greenified most of the processes (like every apps and games except viber, tango, whats app skype, line, twitter, facebook, vine) and froze (with titanium backup) google+, gmail, chrome, htc tips, play books, play movies, play kioske, play music, htc tips, htc watch.
Here is my question : do you guys think i should try some battery recalibrating or should replacing the battery do the trick? Or maybe there's nothing to do and the one x+ is just doomed in that area.
In one month I am going to Japan for a couple of weeks and I'll be needing a lot of my HOX+ so I sure wouldn't want to spend money on a new phone (with the next gen devices right around the corner) or on a pricey mugen external juice case. Any piece of advice or info is welcome.
Thanks in advance for your time guys.

Danke.
So you say you had the battery replaced. May I ask if you did see a significant difference once the new battery was installed? Also im curious, after how many months did you replace it and how heavy were you using your phone before?
Again, thank you, much appreciated.
I've had similar issues with my battery. It has definitely gotten worse as time goes by. I did however just get a response from HTC about what to do about the quick battery drain when my phone hits 15%.
This is what they said:
I apologize for this behavior that you are having with the battery on your HTC One X+. The culprit in this situation is not the battery, it is the charging logic. Therefore, I advise you to recalibrate the battery/charging logic with the following steps:
1. Charge the device for at least 10 minutes
2. With the device truly OFF while still being plugged into the wall outlet, push in and hold volume up and volume down AND power button, for 2 minutes.
3. Let go. Device will boot up, and battery/charging logic are re-calibrated.

I cannot test this as the current ROM I have can only do a soft reboot, thus I cannot shutoff my device. Hope it helps at least a little.

Thank you, I will try this method and report.
Rapid drain from 15% -> happens most of the times to EVERYONE, its not individual phone problem..
So unless HTC's calibration method doesn't help just need learn to live with it :/

I suffer a lot from this issue (rapid drain from 15%->0%).
I think the battery capacity is measured/reported wrongly by the OS, because battery stats app measures the battery at 1832mAh (fully charged), not 2100 which is supposed to be...

I had this problem and I left the phone at the service for a warranty change of the battery.
They've changed it and I must admit that the problem has been resolved. I can now see how the battery drains step by step: 15, 14, 13, 12, 11 etc. It does seem to last a bit more now, maybe half an hour.

I shattered my phone screen, and send it to service, and i told them about battery problem, now they replaced battery, and earpiece speaker as i had low volume, will see how it works after i get it back in 3 days.
The battery bug was introduced in the only update for HOX+, everything was fine before the update. It starts mostly after a few days without a reboot. One time I've had theoretically more than 40% battery level, while in the next hour my phone wouldn't even start because of empty battery. Recently I was goofing around with Tasker. When the battery level showed 20%, my phone shutdown.
Did anyone test the recalibrate thing? Can someone explain me how am I supposed to hold 3 buttons for 2 minutes ?
So got my hox+ from HTC back now, with battery replaced, and now its working properly, listening music since 14% -> 1% for like 45 mins and turning screen here and there to change track, and phone turned OFF after being few minute on 1%.
Not to mention battery lasts about 20-30% longer now, hope it holds like this

Thanks for the info!!
Did you relock the bootloader/return to stock before sending it in, if it was unlocked?
And did the relocked bootloader raise any issues with the warranty?

I returned to stock ofcourse, bootlaoder says RE-LOCKED, no issues.
Hi everyone,
I have exactly the same problems that what has been told before... (Very bad battery life, specially when I'm using 3G data... and when the battery is under 20%, the phone stops completly only few minutes after...)
(My HOX+ is on ViperX+ but before I flashed this rom the problem was the same...)
I tried to do a recalibration of the battery but it didn't solved the problem...
I also tried the HTC instructions listed on the topic before, but it absolutly changed nothing.
My HOX+ is still on waranty but I ordered a new battery to change it by myself (I don't want to change the rom and relock the phone to send it on warranty, I prefer to do it by myself...), and the battery (annonced as genuine) cost about 26€ on Ebay delivered ($35 approximatly)...
I will come back here to tell you if it solved the problem!

Let's talk about this in the next month...
Small update about this.
I contacted HTC support and told them about this bug. Of course one of a consultant's suggestion was "factory reset" and "repair it", as always . But he suggested to wipe android cache via recovery. I did this 10 days ago with no hope this will help, but so far it is working. It seems as if the battery percentage goes quicker up when charging and the level shows now correct values. I will wait one or two more weeks to see if this really solved the issue. So far, it might have been simply luck .
I asked HTC's consultant also about the "hold three buttons while charging to calibrate battery" trick. He said that this trick is not present in their fix database. Weird.
I found this trick on another android website
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...g-red-while-charging-rapid-battery-drain.html
It looks as if it is not a safe solution?
