[Q] LTE speed hard capped at 2mbps at particular location? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hi guys,
In one particular spot in Arlington, Virginia, at the Rosslyn Metro Station where my office is next to, on LTE I'm only getting 2mbps on the download, but normal 10mbps upload.
Now I would think nothing of it if it wasn't for a few facts:
A) I get 30mbps download and 10mbps upload everywhere else in Arlington, VA and Washington DC
B) My works office building is monopolized by Verizon and Cogent, they both have an "agreement" with the building management. You can only get Verizon's $80 DSL, $1,000 T1 etc. (they won't give you the prices they advertise on TV no matter what. You can get a VZ rep to put in an order for the discounted pricing, but when the bill arrives it's still the full pricing). Or Verizon and Cogent's $2,000+ fiber lines.
So while I'm enjoying the nice speeds on LTE I thought hey, why don't I circumvent Verizon's little strangle hold on my office building and tether my office computer to AT&T's LTE.
Well guess what happens when I run a speed test at or a block around the office building where I work? It throttles down to 2mbps.
I've tried a lot of different speed tests, java, flash, text based, all the tests starts off at 10mbps for a split second and then throttles down to 2mbps. Upload runs up to the normal 10-15mbps.
I've put in a ticket with AT&T. But what do you guys think? Am I just being paranoid or what? If I walk one block in any direction away from my office I get the normal 30mbps LTE download speed. Walk back and it throttles down to 2mbps. And no, I don't have my wifi turned on, lol.

I don't know anywhere near to close enough about the technology to make this call, but is there anything that could be causing signal interference that could do this?

[Q] anyone live in ny and use 3D in NYC?

Just wondering what the speeds are with the 3D in midtown and how it sounds, I am looking at the phone in sprint tomorrow. My company offers a discount and I can get the phone for 100 dollars, as well as 125 for transferring my line to sprint. With verzion now, and pay about 110 a month, switching to Sprint, the same features I drop down to 61 a month. Have the Droid 2, and the service is horrible lately, so I am wondering how fast the 4g/3g is as well as call quality.
I have a 3D and live in LI, but I work in Downtown Brooklyn and I am in Manhattan a lot. I would say that the 4G is decent indoors, but if you're in a crazy building or really high up (like 30+ floor) then the 4G is basically not going to work great, if at all. In my office (4th floor in a pretty old building) I average about 2mb/s download on a 4G speed test. I can run one for you tomorrow if you would like for confirmation. I will also do some 3G tests for you tomorrow if you would like.
As far as outside goes, right outside my office I can easily hit 10mb/s down and 1.5mb/s up (Sprint caps the upload at 1.5mb/s now). I posted a speed test yesterday outside so I am attaching a the speedtest.net result.
With all of that said, I never really have an issue with the internet speed.
The call quality is very good, I don't usually drop calls, and if I can't hear someone it's usually the other person. Obviously phone calls in elevators don't work so well . Also, I'd like to point out that if you don't have Sprint signal and you roam, guess what, you're roaming on Verizon.
I would say take the plunge. You have a 30 day return policy anyway.
Nice, thats great, I get horrible speeds now with verizon, we are talking 200kbits and 100 kbits up. When you roam, do you pay more? I know on verizon I only pay more when I roam when its in mexico or canada. I seen a lot of reviews worry about the call quality as well so I am glad its good. Yah that would be great if you can attach a speed test.
4G speeds in Queens are pretty good and stable. Give it a try for 30 days and if you like it then port your number getting the $125 credit from Sprint.
Average DL speeds 7mbs
i know a lot of people are getting theirs today, can't wait to see results!
Here in the the Bronx I'm getting 9500k down and 1400k up.

3G Speeds, Slower than even Edge?

Ok, so I am convert from AT&T and my iPhone 3gs - One of the first apps I like to run is Speed Test so I can gauge what I should be getting - and on my iPhone I used to get 1300 or so K download, and 175 up.
I have run speedtest a few times today and in 10 tests I pull an average of70kbps download and 283up .... Someone please tell me this isnt normal .... Granted that we have a very cloudy day with rain here in Buffalo, but I cant imagine this is even close to what I should get in DL speeds?
in my office building i only get "yellow" for service and right now im getting 585 dl and 61 ul. outside is even better
4g i get 6703 dl and 1430 ul
much better than the 4g in here btw. i don't think i broke 2000 dl inside here, and my status never went above the grey color
Yeah, something isnt right here - I hate to say it, but I may have to call support....
Is the network really congested in your area? I get speeds like that at Tigers games.

Update your PRL. 01120 Should be good. If you don't get 01120, try updating it like 6 times in a row. Oddly enough, its how I got on 01120, which someone who's confused about who-the-man is, says it's biz only PRL. I'm not biz though, I was just sittin here and kept hitting update and it changed to it. Not sure if there's something in the system that allows it to happen or what.
With 4/6 bars on EVDO I'll get ~1500 down and ~800 up
WiMax 1/3 bars 4500 down and 1400 up (1400 is highest upload pretty much)
WiMax 2/3 = 7000 down
and 3/3 tethered = 13000
I stopped at the store and they said it more than likely all the activations, man where they packed, 3D phones going left and right (and some other models).
Also did the PRL update, didnt seem to fix anything ... Ill give them until Next week for these speed issues.

well coming from at&t 3g to sprint 3g is a 50% reduction in speed on paper. cdma is capped at 3.1mbps while gsm is at 7.2. one reason id switch to a more capable technology were it not for the data caps. but you are right, sprints 3g speeds need to be faster. i for one am dissatisfied with sprints 3g.

I've had 2.4Mb down and 1.1 up on EVDOA. Sadly only recently has the WiMax u/l been lifted to 1.5. 2.4Mb down on a cell phone is quite a bit. Granted it's more in the 1 - 1.5Mb range on average, what do you do besides youtube that you'd need more than that? Tethering? Most websites take longer for the phones to process than it does to download the actual content.
Well, I honestly cannot even stream music with the 60k Im getting. It skips alot.... I also used to do Netflix in my car for lunch (Connected to my LCD Screen). Im not looking for 2Mb or anything close, but I would expect anything around 700kbs to 1.2Mbs or so..

me too...me too.
I had the same issue since Wednesday, couldn't get over 120kbps on 3G. Sprint had me redo the activation and it fixed my issues.
You'll need access to the data programming menu, so you have to have your MSL code. Type ##3282# in the dialer, then use your MSL as the password. Go to the data menu and then hit the menu key and click Restore. It'll re-run the activation, update PRL, then update firmware.
Hope it works for others.
3G speeds
I am also getting terrible 3G speeds. Highest I've seen thus far is 130kbps. I had the phone reactivated, restored the data profile and still no luck. I went into the Sprint retail location and they did say that since there has been so many activations and bandwidth usage today, the 3G speeds have been extremely slow. I am expecting these data speeds to rise within the next day or two otherwise its going back...

I am posting from Centreville, VA (Fairfax, Northern Virginia area) and I will add that my 3G speeds are horrid.
With full bars the Spider Man game stopped at like 15% download progress and kept failing....I certainly hope this is because of activations or else I will be going back to my Samsung Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile where I get 4G signal everywhere I go....unlike Sprint.
Sprint isnt exactly known for its fast data speeds. You guys are more than likely in an area with slower speeds, like myself.
I highly doubt that the data speeds are as slow as they have been within the past 24 hours. If that was the case, no one would have sprint....I am confident it will pick up.
I am also getting really slow speeds. This is my first time with Sprint, so I'm not sure if this is the norm.
Anyone, previously on Sprint, noticing slower speeds after getting 3vo?

slower then edge speeds? lol .. . my sister has the Evo and she gets about 1.2 mb at my house, i get between 3kbps-124kbps
I went to the Sprint store where I bought the phone and I was told phone data is not like Comcast, and that it can be spotty and sometimes give you 3kbps because it is not Comcast, and I'm welcomed to return the phone if I'd like.
Coming from verizon, in the new hampshire area. My service on sprint has been sub par with terrible download speeds. I hope things improve, because I really do like the phone.

.10 download + 1000 ping?

Every once and a while I'll check my speed test app to see what im getting for 3G download speed. Lately ive been getting over 1000 ping and like .1 mbps download. I went in and did a data profile reset and that fixed the problem. This has happened to me multiple times over the past couple of weeks.
Has this happened to anyone else? And if so, are devs going to fix this in their roms when the bootloader is unlocked?
Well, it's Sprint, so that's normal 3G speeds...
Move along folks, nothing to see here.
my 3g used to be fire!!! now it seems as if everybody has joined sprint and the network is hella saturated!!!!!!!

Depends on your location. If you check the Sprint forums, there are tons of people complaining about data speeds all over the country. There's certain areas in the Bronx where I have full 4G and only getting 0.50mbps down...it's crazy!
I would say do a ##3282# and make sure your EVDO is set to auto not CDMA. Menu>commit changes & reboot. Update PRL then profile. I guess you've done that?
i was told that for the last month and a half it was because of thunderstorms. i asked him since there are just a few towers between the 44 miles i drive to work, how did all those storms only hit sprint's antennae and not verizon's that are on the same towers?
i talked to a gm at the sprint store last night and he said they're having major data issues and there's no time frame of when they'll ever be fixed. just outside that sprint store i have full 5 bars on 3g and only get 100kb/s. i made sure i was outside of the sprint store's range just in case they had a 3g airave.
they did fix the slow data in my city and most of the areas where i drive to work. now min of 600Kb/s and up to 1.8Mb/s
I find Sprint's network getting worse and worse...they're loading it up with new customers enticed by high end smartphones, but they're not boosting the capacity to match their growth. What scares me is, how much lower is it going to go? :/
Around here I get about 75-200kbps down. It can go to less than 40kbps during lunchtime.

they will let it go pretty far. currently the tower that services my house will be so overloaded during the evening hours that speeds are 0-5k. last night between 7-11pm 3g was unuseable and 4g was zooming at 20k.
ive had dates of april 30th, may 30th, june 30th, and now july 30th as dates when the towers were to be upgraded. i honestly think they just throw dates around so they can get you off the phone.
Same here. During peak hours data is unusable without a wifi connection. I called so many times to put service tickets on the local towers. It's so fustrating. Everytime I call I'm on the phone for like 40mins tell them it's not my phone, it's a network issue. They just don't get it. BTW does anyone have the number for advanced sprint tech support? I'm going to keep calling until they fix the issue.
This is what bugs me so much paying the $10 Premium data Fee. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying the fee if I actually get premium data, but 100kbs down is not premium data. Something has to be done. What the hell are theying doing with that fee? They certainly aren't putting it back into their network. I hope Sprint doesn't get the Iphone because it will only get worse.
You're not in 3G. Your in 1x when you get those speeds. The Display will always say 3G even when switch to 1x.
Once rooted, that can be fixed to reflect what you are really on.

Welcome to Sprint the Nation Wide slowest 3G available.
Welcome to Sprint-The (hope you dont need to download that)Now Network
First, try this:

[MOD] Data Latency (Slow Data) Fix
And second, it is not unusual. I have tried to play online games(BFBC2 etc.) via Wi-Fi hotspot. With poor success. Reasons for this is poor connection(long range to Cell-towers) network overcapacity etc. etc.
Shutting phone's Ciphering should raise U/D speed as above thread say, but I guess that there is not any mindblowing way to fix it. Updating radios would help but.

I said it once and I'll say it again Location, Location, Location. I am Cali bay area(Currently in Lafayette, CA) and my Evo 4G just ran 962k down and 656k up 187 ping. Evo 3d same time test ran 164 ping 1038k down and 609k up. Now at my house in El Sobrante, CA about 15 minutes away I would not come close to touching that speed. Usually around 50k or worse. One thing is I never rely on 3g to do anything for me. I have wifi at home and work and at times 4g. If I am in 3g only location I do not expect to get anything important done.
Edit: Keep in mind I also did the speed fix on both phones. Have to have msl for that.
Here are a couple images for you one is my Verizon 3G Xoom and the other my EVO 3D. Lets face it Sprint speed sucks.

Im gonna guess the people that get these good speeds are in sparse areas or areas with few sprint customers. I've been complaining about Sprint speeds since October of last year and its only getting worse and worse. I can remember constant speeds of 1.2-1.8 megs down and now im doing good just to get 250kb/s. The 4G has fallen off quite a bit too.

Actually I'm not 1x. I have a few programs to tell me what network I'm on and I'm definetly getting those speeds on EVDO Rev A. You can use Battery Monitor and go to "Tests" and it will tell you what network you are using or you can use Open Signal and go to maps and it will also tell you. I'm definetly getting these speeds on 3G (EVDO Rev A) Not 1x!

HTC ONE on Tmobile data speeds slow ?

I just got a HTC One on T mobile and waiting to port my number from ATT but the data speeds using speedtest are abysmal less than 500kb and sometimes not even connecting at all. I decided to just test the browser to see if real usage makes a difference not just in the speedtest app and same result web pages taking too long to load and sometimes time out because of slow connection.
I'm in Daly City/San Francisco area, before deciding to switch I did my research and Tmobile coverage shows I should be in "excellent" 4g speeds here where I live.
Before I run back to the store and return it and stay with AT&T , is there something I can do to check the correct APN settings or what else can i do ? I'm disappointed so far, I wanted to try T mobile because of their no contract and cheaper plan but at these data speeds it's just not worth it.
Thanks for any advice / help.
Been seeing great speeds here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2247966
But try out a demo phone in the store and test the speed. It might be the phone, or the tower (temporarily) you're connected to. SF is a market with great speed. I've seen speed tests from ppl around. Definitely better the AT&T's HSPA+ speeds.
last night I posted great speeds, today I'm down to 2g although in a different geographical area.
earlier today I lost all data connectivity, it was something wrong with TMO's system. support had to "hook something up" behind the scenes for me to get it back.
---------- Post added at 11:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:36 AM ----------
Update: I noticed that the phone was defaulting to 2g. No matter what, it stayed there.
Using tips from this thread: http://support.t-mobile.com/thread/37862
I went to Settings > Mobile Data > Network Mode and switched it to WCDMA Only.
The data connection re-set and went to 4g.
Repeating the above step, I went back to GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto, and the phone reset data and got back on 4g.
I think this all had something to do with this morning's outage.
Tmobile tends to have outages sometimes, a few days ago the network in Dallas was down and I was getting horrible speeds. I say that you wait a bit and see if there is any improvement in the next couple of days. Also maybe call in to make sure that your sim is fully activated.
I'll just leave this..

Thinking about making the switch from Sprint (EVO LTE) to T-Mobile and the HTC One. I'm in the Seattle area (Federal Way/Milton) and commute back and forth to downtown Seattle (5th and Pike) every week day. How's the coverage and speed along the I5 corridor? I've looked at the sensorly data and it looks solid, but just really wanting to get a real world feel from a user.
Thanks!

I and my wife recently purchased One's moving from Sprint to T-Mobile. We live in Oakland. Our speeds are similarly slow. Actually, in the week I've had the phone I've rarely had speeds much higher than 400kbs down. Strangely, upload speeds are usually three times faster. This is from inside my apartment where I typically have 2 bars of 4g...three bars every now and then. These speeds are horrible. I called T-Mobile who responded by dispatching an engineer to the tower I use. Within 24 hrs the speeds almost doubled however T-Mobile's feedback was there were no issues. But after a couple of days speeds had declined back to an avg of 350kbs down with upload speeds still 3x download speeds. In my experience, whenever upload speeds are consistently and significantly faster than download speeds and the download speeds are far below what is expected, then either there is a problem with the network or the network is being actively reconfigured.
Assuming I might just be in a "dead" spot due to geography I decided to test speeds in I my neighborhood as I walk my dog. There are no tall buildings or anything I could see to cause much interference. On my street the speed was about the same as inside. About 1/4 mile from my apt the signal was very strong lighting all 5 bars...but speeds only increased slightly. Throughout the area I walked (1/2 circle around my home with radius of 3/4 mile) the signal strength ranged from 2-3 bars fluctuating to 5 solid bars. But there was not much correlation between data download speed and number of bars. In some places 4g speed was as fast as 10Mbs and a bit down the block it could be low as 400Kbs. The speeds were duplicateable...meaning in front of one house speed might be 5Mbs and a speeds in front of a house say 6 houses down the block speed may be 1Mbs. Those speeds would be pretty much the same when I returned later on another walk.
The most surprising discovery is there is a narrow area about 5 houses wide that had LTE. In that small area the speeds were slightly greater than 20Mbs down and 10Mbs up.
The results lead me to believe T-Mobile is actively fumbling with their towers to get LTE quickly, yet attempting to do so as quietly as possible. Due to my disappointment at the painfully slow data speeds I would consider returning the One's firing T-Mobile and moving on. However, the discovery of LTE 1 1/2 blocks from my home AND MAYBE EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY no real alternative for an "unlimited" data plan that makes financial sense to me (Sprint is nolonger an option since their network is almost unusable)...has me pretty excited as to what my T-Moble experience will be. I hope they aim that LTE antenna in my direction.
@chakathebird:
Wow, I'm in Hayward which is not too far from Oakland and I also switched from Sprint (which is just awful in the Bay Area these days). On Sprint I was lucky to get over 400kbps on 3G and I couldn't even get 4G LTE. (Although 4G WiMax on my old GS2 was fantastic for me). On T-Mobile 4G HSPA I get 8Mbps down / 3 Mbps up on my HTC One and similar speeds on my Nexus 4. With those great speeds I normally just leave LTE turned off on the One, but I did do a speed test with LTE turned on and got 11Mbps down / 6Mbps up.
I work in the South Bay, but sometimes head over the bridge to San Francisco and travel throughout the Bay Area. Everywhere I go I get similarly fantastic speeds on T-Mobile. So if you are getting such slow speeds there is definitely something wrong with either your phone or the tower in your neighborhood. I'd take the phone to other nearby towns and see if you're getting similar bad speeds. If so, I'd have T-Mobile exchange the phone as it may be defective.
I'm in the Northern VA area and there is some LTE. If I'm not driving around and sitting in one place, I can stay on LTE, but driving around, it's bouncing in and out of LTE which just shuts off data all together. So i turned off LTE till they get more towers updated.
On a side note, the radio in the HTC one seems really nice. At my house I can get 13Mb/s down on the HTC but I can only get 6Mb/s down on my data stick sitting beside me. Both connected at HSPA+.
I am not even running on LTE here in NJ and I am still impressed with the speed. It actually comes pretty close to my friend's GS3 on Verizon with LTE.

[Q] Radio or Tower?

So, I live in a rural area, and this isn't likely to change for the next year or two. We have a marginal DSL connection, which has problems that ATT is extremely apathetic about solving. So I've come to rely on my DNA on an unlimited plan to tether. We actually have an LTE tower here, which is great! However, as 4g phones have become more prevalent, naturally the quality of my service began to suffer. I believe I'm roughly 2 miles from the nearest tower.
In the beginning, I would get 20 down, 5 up. Way more than I was used to and plenty for streaming Twitch/Netflix and surfing the web. The connection was rock solid and of course great for gaming. Lately, I'm lucky to get 5 down, 2 up. From 8pm to midnight, There are periods that I'll get .5 down. Point 5. One half. 500kbps. 2 bars of 4g. 500kbps. Even right now, at 5pm, I'm buffering frequently on a 2Mbps twitch stream, doing nothing else with the connection.
So I guess I need to end with a question. Is this a tower issue, can it possibly be that congested? Is it the radio on my DNA somehow? I'm running the stock ROM (rooted, s-off, unlocked stock ROM from the forums here.) and latest radio. Is there a radio version that's reputed to perform better? I'm not much of a phone guy when I'm at home, so if there's some way I can arrange it to be more reliable, putting it on a high shelf or something weird or crazy, I'm open-minded. Is there a ROM that'll make it easier? I used to run Viper, but I didn't use all the features so felt like stock was reasonable.
Basically, any suggestions for improving my LTE performance are welcome.
It could be the tower is congested. I know if I go downtown Phoenix area during the day, I cannot get above 250kbps, but uptown areas like Glendale and Peoria, I never go below 10mbps. It is because downtown towers are congested.
If it is the tower like my experience above, no radio flash will help you.

Thanks for the input. That's pretty much what I'd concluded about my location as well, even though we aren't a high population area. It's a one-intersection town in the midwest. I suppose the tower could be located differently from where I believe it is, but that one would be even less populated.
What is your 4G coverage like in an urban area as opposed to at home? I'm also s-off, rooted and on stock ROM and live in the country. I'm almost smack in the middle of two towers, one two miles to the east and one a mile and a half to the west. When I'm at home my speeds are 15 down and 2-3 up with one to two bars. When I'm in the city area my speeds are almost 35 down and 15-20 up with full bars. In populated areas Verizon lines to have many towers covering an area so the phone can triangulate between the towers to get the best speed and coverage. Those of us in the country usually have only one tower in town and towns are sitar apart so the phone can't triangulate a signal. Once the line tower becomes congested we have no other towers to fall back on and speeds are effected. Which sounds like the problem you describe.
that makes a lot of sense sabres. I don't get out much so I can't really gauge how things work out of a home situation, unfortunately.
