[Q] Galaxy ROM on EVO 3D? - HTC EVO 3D

This might be a pretty noob question, and I want to assure everyone that I have searched for an answer on a bunch of threads to no avail:
Is it possible to port a Galaxy ROM to a phone like the EVO 3D? I hear nothing but good things about the Galaxy phones, and am curious to try them out without actually purchasing one. So is it possible to do so? I'm thinking not, since I haven't seen any such ROMS out there, but either way I'd like to know why or why not. If it IS possible, can anyone direct me to an appropriate ROM (or theme/launcher at least)?
Thank you so much for your help, and I apologize if this is a noob question that has been answered before- XDA is a world of it's own, so it's easy to miss a thread or two!

It IS possible, but as I have never seen one, you would have to do it from scratch, which normally takes teams of people weeks or months to get working correctly.

Generally, one of the common issues when porting ROMs are the difference in radio between CDMA and GSM. Using a galaxy device on the same radio as the EVO 3D device would be a good starting point, but would require a bit of work.
Off the top of my head, the major issues I'd forsee would be with the kernel/drivers, Android libraries and Android frameworks.
Either way, would be a very time consuming project and not sure the outcome would be very beneficial.
Your original goal was to expercience the Galaxy device, which you've heard is popular. In my opinion, the best way to do this would be to demo a Galaxy device as opposed to loading the Galaxy version of the Android OS onto a EVO 3D.
One reason the Galaxy devices are popular is Samsung as made them available across the world on many many carriers, while the EVO 3D has had a very limited release audience in comparison.
Hope that helps!

[Q] Does the vibrant 3g roms work for vibrant 4g

I just purchased a new vibrant 4g which is currently on its way. My question is will I be able to root it with the same process as the 3g vibrant and will I be able to use Masters/Team Whiskey roms on them can anyone please explain. I never post on xda so hopefully this is where this type of question belongs.....
No they are different enough they will not just flash, but converting Say a trigger or other Rom to the 4g will be totally doable, just depends on whether the devs actually get that phone. My guess not many will.
thanks for the response that really sucks I know I could have done the modification for the ffc on my own I really needed the 4g tethering so that was the only reason I gave up my vibrant. Looks at the specs the phones are pretty much exactly the same I see most devs taking the vibrant 4g and porting them over to the vibrant 3g I was hope I was going to be able to use some of the roms which sucks. I may just keep the vibrant 3g and not sell it not... thats dissappointing news thanks for the info

Now to give you an answer: I have both phones. The 4g will have custom ROM's infact there are already 3 of them made by team whiskey. The problem is not having CWM working on our 4g phones yet. However, someone over at TW will be looking into getting this going this weekend. Once that is finished we will be capable of running custom ROM's
One good thing that bruce lee doesn't understand is that all these new PORTS the vibrant have been getting will require less modifying to work on the 4G.. Much smoother.
Bruce Lee sorry to kinda kick ya there, but how about not being a **** when your asking some noobish questions in your thread yourself. Everyone learns by asking questions.
Omg! just joshing. Although it is funny how all these people sooo anxious to hop on the latest and greatest where so sure 4g was going to be the natural progression of development. And despite many saying a ride on 4g wagon was illogical since theres no real advantage, an unlucky few still jumped.
Hey look, stop lying to these people; exclusive development for the 4g will likely never pick up. Even on tw own forum, was a guy advised to return the 4g because of its grim future. Every two years your carrier gives you the option to "upgrade" to a better phone not "side-step" to an equally comparable phone.
And just to be clear, I'm not trying to poke fun at the questioner. The above post is correct to state that no question is dumb are irrelevant and I live by this philosophy, as my previous post prove, and I am not ashamed of that. This was just a knee jerk reaction to some who i consider delusional in thinking 4g is so much more superior. Just thinking out loud

Lovemysgs is correct, there are a couple- 3, And without CWM flashing them is not as easy as most are used to, So, depending on your understanding of how to mod the phone and how to use some of the other tools like adb SDK and Odin, I usually tell the less skilled or the less familiar to wait until the beta becomes a normal release.
Also, when they do mod these roms it WILL be much easier like lovemysgs said. The only real problem is alot of devs will have moved on to other phones since this is not really a new phone just an upgrade to the Vibrant. So I would guess there will be less support.
Good question BTW
The roms wont work but u can still change a few things on it. The Linda sounds posted in the theme section works. You just have to move the files with root explorer. Also the transition animations done through metaphorph work. And you can change the touchwiz launcher with sgs tools. And you can change the shutdown but not the bootup animations.

[Q] testers needed for a port

Hello guys, I'm killswitch and I'm normally over at the samsung captivate and galaxy s2 sections of XDA, but i have come here with a request. A little background story first: My friend got an HTC Evo design 4g because a cute girl talked him into getting it. Dead serious right now. He was disappointed to find no ROMS for his phone, and not too long ago i searched and found no roms either. He asked me to port anything for him, preferably AOSP since he hates sense. If i were to port an AOSP rom like CM7 to his phone, what are the chances one of you has an evo design you wouldn't mind testing the ROM for me with? I'd just hate to mess up and kill his phone. This would be my very first port, ever. However, if it makes you feel any better, i would be using a porting guide with very good feedback from here at XDA developers. I can post a link if you'd like.
On a similar note: for months now I've been wanting to get into ROM development/porting. Now is a great time for me to start. Anybody know where i can find a mentor/good starting thread/information?
All is greatly appreciated, thank you very much

Why is hardly any new roms for GS3?

Hi, I have a GS1, GS2 (hardly mine but still) and a GS3. For GS1 there is an abundance of ROMS, kernels etc. İn a couple of days after a new Android version gets released lots of ROMS become available. When it comes to GS2 and GS3 though, there are hardly any choices. For example, at the moment there are about 10 4.2.1 ROMs just in the first page of I9000 development. There is none for the others.
What is the reason for this even though the other two have much higher userbases? Just curious. Happy holidays.
GS 1 needs development GS3 does not so much .
There are only so many variations on themed roms .
Its a devs choice what to build and if you are lucky to share with XDA users .
A fair number no longer post on XDA as they are fed up with idiotic questions .
You can speed the process up by donating a SGS3 to a dev .

Is that idiotic questions part for me? It is hardly an idiotic question. With a little overclock I can get more performance out of my GS1 than GS3, the stock performance is really low. I've seen lots of comments how it takes too long to open the phone and contacts apps etc. It is not like I'm angry for no development. It is a simple question.
I've been donating money to everyone who helped me. Thank you.

Like the person above you said there are only so many variation in themes for a rom.. Plus GS3 is fast as it is so making a rooted custom rom is for apps and themes.. Also for those apps that need root.. Anyway he is also right dev's deffo get fedup after a while due to the same question asked so many times. They make FAQ's but that still results in so many same questions..

Maybe you should stop being a whatever you were writing. I've never criticised anyone for not developing, I've kindly asked is there a technical reason for this. If you don't have an answer you can shut up and get out of here.

I've misunderstood your post, sorry about that. You've suggested me to donate a SGS3 and obviously it is hardly possible for anyone, so I've assumed you were angry for this post.
I've simply asked a question is there a technical reason for the thing I've described above, I don't care whether everyone develops for GS3 or nobody.
Anyway, again I am sorry for that misunderstanding.

You may have answered the question yourself. Userbase is bound to be higher, hence more custom roms.
GS1 has been out for nearly three years. GS3 about half a year.
I didn't have a very close look, but the 10 4.2.1 roms you mention are probably all CM kangs.
Number of JB 4.2 ROMs shouldn't really matter, as they will probably be quite similar in the general functions they offer. Will all of those 10 JB 4.2 ROMs be so unique from each other that they look like HTC vs Samsung for example? I wouldn't think so. Not downtalking the importance of developers or anything but you can customise the ROMs to your taste using the mods and apps in the Themes & Apps section if you want diversification.

[Q] new phone long wait?

i know i posted up earlier about the red border. Everything is good now. I just now have questions about this phone and its development stages. Since for some reason i cant post in dev page. I have to ask here.
So i was half tempted to not get this phone simply because i browsed the threads and saw no real roms or kernals that do anything fancy. I come from an evo 3d and could flash a rom every single day if i wanted because there were so many. I know this phone is new how new im still not sure upon. I see a real lack of any development on here. The best you can get is turning your og into a nexus 4 and than have cm 10.1 with the downside of only 8gigs of storage period. Well that was the whole reason i did not just pick up the htc one x was because there was no expandable memory and at most you had 10g of internal storage and thats it! so whats going on here? I know alot about the scene and though i have no coding experience myself nor rom building experience. I do love to test roms and i really want a not a stock feel to the phone. Where is the overclocking, where is the transperent status bar, where is anything to make this phone really stick out from stock? Hell i was running jb 4.2 on my evo 3d. Now im stuck being back on ICS? How is this possible that there is not stable jb port to this phone that is properly working. I have 14 days to return this phone. And with people releasing roms that the camera does not work, and storage is crap, and no overclocking support, is it because this is not the phone i thought it could be? Am i not doing enough research. Im currently rooted, unlocked, and running nocturnal limited, and i still feel stock and still 4.04.
Is this phone going to be heavily dev supported like the evo 3d is still today or should i return it and get a phone like the htc one that actually has dev support. All the roms i have seen for this phone is almost complete garbage interms of what this phone should be capable of. And the idea of turning into a nexus 4 is the most idiotic thing i ever heard.... let me change my phone to be another phone? Who wanted that and why did they just not go and get the nexus 4? I may be ranting but i could have got the htc one for .99 as opposed to the $100 i paid to sign a contract with att. I want to know if i am really getting jipped here. Is this not the phone plenty rave about? If your on this site there is no way you want a stock feeling phone and thats what i feel we are getting. I donated to get the freegee app to find out there is no good roms therefor no need to unlock the bootloader so i can flash roms that are not here..........
please dont come at me like a hard a$$ and talk crap, im simply expressing an opinion and asking questions. I loved my evo3d and if i have to carry both around because my 3 year old phone is 10 times better than this optimus im going to be upset. I would just like someone to explain what is in the works with this phone, and if and when there will be some real dev support and why there is almost non at the moment. It sad when devs are still all over the 3d posting new roms everyday, and this one has 5 that are garbage?
thank you for your actual intelligent responses, and cant wait for some nerd raging on me for blasting this out like this. Im simply being real.
Try reading this forum for the answers to your questions. Then maybe sell your OG to someone who appreciates it and knows what to do with it. Sounds like you'd be better off with a SG3. Good luck.

Wow.... I'll take your OG if you don't want it. Seriously, I will.

exactly the responses i was expecting lol.....
Its clearly obvious i have read the forums as i am rooted, unlocked with twrp and nocturnal limited rom... so thank you for pointing out how much i have not read.
As for the sg3...... well thats is just an over priced piece of trash everyone i know hates them.... so thanks but piss off...
as for your iphone comment... only mainstream looooooosers have iphones as they are for the dumb...
no you may not have my optimus if i do anything with it , it will go back to att and ill get a htc one x+ at least people are doing things or at least talking of things they are doing.
HTC has huge dev support and this being my first LG i knew it was going to take some getting used to. I was just hoping for a little more out of this highly praised machine. It is a great phone, i will not say its not. I just was expecting from such a great phone a huge dev following of which i do not see. I see about 5 different roms, a custom cwm touch recovery, and hmmm..... turning your optimus into a nexus.. For you thinking that i am bashing on lg and should give it away.... there is people here pretending there phones are different phones... "hey look i know it says lg but is totally a nexus!" I can download a launcher that makes my phone look like a windows phone.... but hmmmm how dumb is that? At the end of this rant, i was curious as to what anyone knows about the future of the development on this phone. Clearly you do not have answers because that would take thinking, your idiotic comments and replys did nothing to offer any sort of answer nor did it show your IQ being anywhere near that of a 10 year old..
I clearly posted i await your nerd rage and therefore clearly enjoy it, however this thread was not started with the sole intent of it being a bickering fest. I wanted some serious answers, and I tried to express myself and thoughts on this phone along with questions that involved the future of this phone.
I am a flashaholic, i love to make my phones the best they can be. I love anything custom! So if you wanna cry about my thoughts on the phone cry, ill bring you a tissue, otherwise offer some real insight into what this phone is all about, and hopefully where this phone might be heading. Otherwise take your trolling, crying , butthurt comments somewhere else, as they are just absolutely humorous to me, and ill will reply accordingly.
Thanks and hope to hear some real comments...
btw: i cant wait for the grammer police comments cause it seems if no one has something good to say, they just like to correct your grammer, sort of like "your a tool" "no, your a tool" and we can definatly take this back to 1st grade if you like.

"have the AT&T LGOG and it's rooted with unlocked boot loader and is running a custom ROM called The Base. Devs are working hard to build a way to easily port any Nexus 4 ROM. They have CM10 working but are still working out the kinks before releasing it. CM9 and a stock AOSP rom are also in the works. The Base is a stock, rooted, and debloated ROM and it is already out. Development is going strong and everyday I see more developers move on over to it. Since it is very similar to the Nexus 4, once all the hard work is done building the device tree, roms are gonna come flying out."

I do believe its a great phone, but heavily relying on nexus devs to do all the dirty work, granted they are practically the same. Again i wanted to know whats up with this phone.

And...? Everything I said is true.
LGOG is rooted and has unlocked bootloader
Has stock roms (The Base, Slick, Noc)
Devs are still working on a way to port Nexus 4 roms (I believe it has to do with building a device tree and obtaining source for JB kernel)
CM10 (an actual ROM, not the N4 conversion) is "almost" done (About 3 weeks ago a dev said it booted and they could hear the lock screen but couldn't see the display due to driver issues.
A dev was working on CM9 but I believe they stopped because there was no point in releasing an outdated ROM.
Development is going strong and everyday I see more developers move on over to it. - Fact (Development is a slow process. They have made huge progress in only a few months. This phone isn't like samsung. They are working from a locked down system with no source code. They are amazing for what they do. They are some of the best devs on XDA.)
Once we have on bootable ROM, which will happen, Roms will be coming out quickly.
So I guess the real question is, "Do you actually know how to read?"

Wish I had better news. We are all eagerly and (in)patiently waiting for the first release of non-stock roms. Unfortunately, it's just a waiting game. Right now it's LG's move and they are taking their sweet little time. We do have a strong dev following. They are lurking in the shadows. We are very fortunate that we have both an international version of this phone and also the Nexus 4. That gives us two pools where ROMs can be ported from. Just like the Nexus S, i9000, and Samsung Captivate. All of which are still going strong. It took time to get things setup for those phones and like I said we are at a disadvantage because LG isn't as "helpful" as Samsung. Development will take off one way or another, we just have to wait.
IMHO though, nobody should be complaining because stock LG is amazing. And the stock ROMs are perfect.
Dude....
Your entire post sounds like one big vagina monologue.
"There is not enough dev support for this phone..... I can't believe we don't have a stable JB ROM..... I want to flash a new rom every day....."
Waaa waaa waaa :crying::crying::crying::crying:
No one is intimidating you.
Just making the point that you obviously did not act like a rational consumer by purchasing a product that does not meet your expectations, then complain about it in the QA section.
Not sure why you needed to create this thread. Return the phone and get something else if you aren't happy with it. It's not rocket science, lol.

Oh look, it's this thread again
Guys, settle down please. Let's not turn this into the i777 forums. I'd rather not relive that.
This phone is too powerful to not be developed, but developing for ICS is pointless when JB is coming. There will be much more development. You must just be patient. But in all honesty, Samsung and HTC will probably always have more development, so if you are a flashaholic, I would go with the SIII.

They wouldn't close this thread, it has been nothing but honest, intelligent, mature, informative discussion.
But honestly, this has been asked a lot... We are hoping development will pick up after the source is released and JB hits our device.
But there are no guarantees, it is kind of your fault for picking up a device (great as it may be) that doesn't have 20+ ROMs out for it, you should have looked here first and shied away from the device if development was so important.
Based on what we have heard from devs, the work is being done, it is slow going with no source and nobody wants to work on ICS when JB is coming so soon.
Also, one of the biggest problems here, you called what development we have seen released "garbage," most likely (hopefully) the devs can dismiss that statement as the angry rantings of somebody with a bad filter, but it is still terrible motivation to spur development further.
Work has gone into the development we have seen, it may not have quite the shock and awe factor you are looking for, but they are solid works.
It sounded like you were very unappreciative and then demanded more, maybe not your intention, but that is how it can be construed.
I'm not trying to bash you in any way, but the community does better when there is less... negativity.
Also, no need to be so defensive, you knew you would get the responses you did, should have just let them slide.

Guys, settle down please. Let's not turn this into the i777 forums. I'd rather not relive that.

dood i agree the i777 forums was a nightmare with all the immaturity attitude around
I get the feeling OP is the kind of guy that complains when he gets free stuff.
As for getting a new phone, good riddance. You really didn't need to make this thread. A lot of us are waiting on custom ROMs and CM10 and all that. You don't see us whining about it like a little girl (no offense ladies )

Is it just me, or is the development section for this phone a ghost town?

I remember the HTC Evo days. Boy, I spent hours-a-day browsing the development section on XDA to get my flash fix. That carried over with my Samsung Galaxy S2 and then the S3. Now that I'm considering coming back to HTC for a fresher experience, I found myself jaw-dropped at how ghostly the development forums are. I figured this could be a result of the phone being so young; so I went to the GS4 to see if that holds true. Wow... what a difference. Those forums seem busier than hell. And it's only been about a month since it was released as well.
Anyone have any idea why that is? I've been trying to convince myself to get the HTC One. I got over the fact that it lacks a replaceable battery, a MicroSD card, and recently, I got over the fact that the images are just not all that it's hyped up to be. I figured I'd be transitioning to the Moto X Phone when that comes out later in the year, so I might as well put-up with these shortcomings. But not having the development support that I experienced with the earlier HTC devices, and recently with the Samsung devices is just not something I think I can get over.
I am constantly thinking of the word "potential" when referring to this phone. What a shame. HTC had all the tools to flip the market on its feet, but it seems as if they came up short... again.
Check out the non-carrier-specific forum...it's pretty active.
EDIT: HTC didn't come up short, this phone is considered quite a success.
My theory for this specific forum being dead is that T-Mobile's national release of this phone was yesterday (06/05/2013). Before that, it was only available in their "high-volume" locations.
Oh wow. And all of those will work with the Tmo version?
Sent from my badass Samsung Galaxy SIII.
yea all the development is in the international forum. all roms on that forum will work on the tmo htc one and they work very well. i have flashed every sense based rom and most of the aosp roms. definitely not a ghost town over there:good:
Yeah, they should. But as always, continue at your own risk.

As you've noticed by now, there's plenty of developer support for the HTC One. It's all just confined to the general HTC One forums, which makes sense, as the various roms can be used on the AT&T, T-Mobile, and international HTC One's. Most developers don't want to have to maintain 3 or more separate threads for the same thing.
As was pointed out though, if you're looking for T-Mobile wifi calling compatibility, be careful about the ROMs you flash. Since the 4.2.2 OTA for T-Mobile isn't out yet, no 4.2.2 ROM is going to support it. I'd suggest Android Revolution 9.4, or a similar 4.1.2 ROM if WIFI calling is essential to you.
Also, since a Google edition of the phone is going to be coming out in the near future, developer support is likely going to expand even further.
So I think it's safe to say you can put your fears to rest and buy an HTC One. I don't think you'll regret it.
Yea I've been hanging out in the International One forums as almost all their ROMs work for us.
This forum really shouldn't even have a development section since there's not really any specific T-Mo stuff that needs to be done.
Every single ROM in the GSM section will work for T-Mo. There isn't a single one that won't work. The only thing you lose is T-Mo's branded stuff and T-Mo's wifi calling (as they are the only ones who do Wifi calling)/

Thanks you guys so much for your replies. I'm happy to see that the development forums for the One is indeed thriving. I'm more confident in snagging a one over the GS4 now.
Indeed, I don't see a reason as to why even bother with a Tmo specific section.

I was able to dig up an old link for Android Revolution 9.4 but can't find a description or list of features etc for it. Are you positive it has wi-fi calling in it?
I haven't owned an HTC since the OG Nexus One (had all Nexus devices since) so I'm reading up on S-OFF etc before I flash a new ROM. I really want to try out wifi calling though so that's why I'd like to make sure. Thanks in advance!
PS - link to ROM if anyone wants it: http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=Android_Revolution_HD-One_9.4.zip

9.4 definitely has wifi-calling. I'm on 9.3 at the moment and wifi-calling works perfectly for me on T-Mobile. In the installer, just be sure to select T-Mobile as your carrier and it will install all the necessary files for wifi calling.
Also, note that S-Off isn't required to flash this ROM. All you need to do is unlock your device through HTC Dev, located at the HTC Dev site. I'd give you a direct link, but asinine restrictions in place on this forum are preventing that at the moment. Just Google HTC Dev and it will be the first result. You can't miss it.
Anyway, unlike with earlier HTC devices, this unlock method allows you to flash everything you need to update the ROM. Only some of the "black box" partitions like the radio and bootloader aren't flashable when it's unlocked with this method, but to my knowledge, no ROM requires that, and furthermore, the Nexus devices are very similar in that respect.
The only real advantage to S-Off is if you plan on flashing a different carrier's RUU, altering the radio, or changing your CID. Anyway, just something to be aware of.
Good luck.

Sweet, thanks I'll definitely try 9.4 then! Reception in my office all day is terrible so I'm excited to try wi-fi calling.
I think I understand in theory why S-OFF would not be needed. but the nerd in me wants full control with S-OFF.. Also, if I use S-OFF, i can return my phone to bone-stock and keep warranty right? As amazing as the hardware on the HTC One is (I've gotten used to sub-standard hardware with the Nexus line), I'm not 100% sure yet I want to keep it.
Any chance you could educate me on what CID is for? Evidently it may restrict/allow flashing ROMS from certain regions?
Also, I believe I have a basic understanding of what an RUU is, but could you elaborate for me by any chance? I believe it's basically an all i one installer for a full stock ROM?
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but this T-Mo sub forum seems a bit more forgiving than some other areas

It's worth doing to S-OFF. If you do, you'll have the ability to relock the phone and put it back to S-ON with zero indication that you ever messed with it. Also, CIDs are used to restrict ROMs from certain carriers to only be installed on certain devices. It's really only a stock or stock-leak ROM limitation, I don't think a single ROM in either the regular or original development section is CID-locked. Either way, if you are S-OFF, you can change your CID code to whatever you want it to be (the code "111111") is referred to as "SuperCID" because that allows you to in theory run an RUU/OTA from ANY Carrier regardless.
You are correct about what an RUU is. However, each RUU is specific to a build of Android made by the carrier, and so far, I think only the Sprint RUU is out. No one has a T-Mo RUU yet (but you really don't need one, all you have to do is flash the stock rooted ROM from our section here and then unroot from the SU app options).
Enjoy tinkering.

Perfect, thanks for confirming all that. I think I'm ready to get the HTC-noob stink off of me The phone feels so amazing in hand, it's making me look at all these Nexus devices (Nexi?) I have in a bit of a different light.. And once the Google Experience software drops, hopefully I won't miss having a Nexus as my daily driver!
You guys are so awesome. I'm counting down the days until July 1st now when I'll get my hands on my own HTC One. =)

You're going to enjoy the One. It's the first Android phone to have the build quality of an iPhone with specs that beat the pants off it
The only thing that sucks about the One is that because it has such a high pixel density, you will be extremely sensitive and aware of pixels in all your other displays (laptop/desktop/tablet etc).
I own an ASUS Zenbook, which is a 13" ultrabook with a full 1920x1080p display which is retina-levels of dense on such a small screen (I think it's almost 170 pixels per inch). The One? The one is a whopping ~470 pixels per inch. It is stupidly dense and I promise you won't find a single pixel no matter how hard you look.
