ICS Bootloop on DPI change - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using Wanam 9.0 but I have seen other similar posts from other custom roms from people saying that editing build.prop results in bootloop.
I tried removing the second line that had the lcd density, keeping only one with my new lcd.density settings, but it resulted in bootloop.
I tried cache, dalvik, fix permissions... nothing helps.
Any ideas?

I suggest to flash your rom again or make nandroid, flash rom again and restore data

It could depend on ur density-level. Some roms have problems with less than 183dpi.

I only tried some values above 200

Having the same problem, restored backup.
You can also push the backed up original build.prop to it's original directory via adb shell.

Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23438841&postcount=11877

Well.. that thing won't work.
The problem is that some changes are being made to build.prop and then it goes into bootloop.
The SUPER EASY way to change DPI, is to have a copy of the build.prop from your custom rom. Extract it from zip, change value, paste it in /system/ --->>> SUCCESS

Ok I've confirmed it by installing LPQ, rooting and changing LCD density. As mentioned, there are two 'ro.sf.lcd_density=240 locations in build prop. Change both of them to desired density level. I changed both of mine to 210 and after a reboot, the LCD changed without issue and a lot smaller.

I know on LPH and a few other ICS roms that the build prop has two locations you need to set the LCD Density. If you changed one already, look for the other one as there should be two locations within build prop.

Well... no. That might be one cause of the problem but in a couple of roms I tried, there was only one line. And still it got a bootloop.

The instructions there nailed it for me. I used to use dpi changer from the market but it doesn't work with the official ics.
I had to reflash the official ics to fix it.

Huh. That's weird, because the behavior you're describing sounds like what others have experienced when they flashed an I777 ROM to an I9100, or vice versa.
Ive had this issue aswell on every samsung (XXKP/LP) based ICS rom and solved it by doing the following:
Tools Needed:
1. Root Explorer (4shared is your best friend)
Steps:'
1. Using root explorer locate the /efs/imei/ folder. In that folder there should be a file called keystr. In my case the file was missing which is why the home-button, power button and the lock screen was missing and was causing my problems.
2. using root explorer create a new file called keystr
3. also in root explorer open the file keystr in text editor and type ON
6. make sure you save the file.
7. reboot.
I will be trying that tonight. Thank you very much for the help and quick response. Really appreciate it lots! Just to query.. what would be the cause of this 'glitch'? Being that the two phones were identical??

Try this, It wrked on a custom LP6 rom and might work with your phone, just get someone to ring it, you dont have to answer it, just ring it, and you should have home button back.
It sounds weird but I'm interested to see if it works on stock as well as the custom rom i tried.
K. Will try that too. Will keep you posted. Also a question from a buddy. The keyboard that comes with stock lp6, Samsung kb it guess is not qwerty, how to change it back?

Just to add. I had the same hardware button issue on stock lp6 and a custom one after that.. reverted back to 2.3.6 and no more error. Then cleaned and tried both Roms again same error.. and Another thing I picked up is when flashed, booting for first time, the ROM's don't in to setup wizard, they in straight to home screen.. I just found that a bit off. Where the second phone, being the phone of my buddy in the last post, went though the setup wizard? Go figure? 'These S2's seem to be a wild breed of animal??

Sorry pillow, but if you read all the posts then you would know that I did load the same Rom on two phones and multiple times at that.. and you can't realy do something wrong or mix up files when flashing with a cwm zip, its pretty straight forward..

The keystr file? Is the filename in all lowercase?
The fix for this was the permissions and owner of the keystr...

Yup, that would do it. I didn't even think about permissions. I just assumed the file would be rw-,rw-,rw-. If one of the groups didn't have read, it would have failed.

Phone stuck on boot screen after attempting to change dpi!

I got an i9100m here which I attempting to change the dpi using LCD modder. I changed it to 160, but it would not reboot successfully.
The phone is on stock 4.0.3 and is rooted, is there a way I can alter the build.prop from my computer and get it to boot again?
Also, whats a better way to change the dpi into something smaller?
edit: I booted into CWM and wiped cache/dalvik, its still hanging on the boot screen though.. hmm.
If you can get to download mode re-flash your stock ROM or via CWM restore a back up. I've used Density Modder a lot and never had a problem. I think 160 is too small, the I9100 has a minimum dpi of around 182. Make sure the ROM you choose is the right one for your I9100 variant.

Yes I can do that but I do not want to lose data so I am going to adb pull the build prop, change it back, then push it.
edit: and, it adb wont recognize it in recovery for some reason.
whatever, fixed it. just reflashed stock firmware on odin,

Error message help!

Hey guys, I continually get this error message upon manually forcing my phone into recovery. I'm on UCLF5 ICS OBJECTION from btw with the latest version of cwm. I would appreciate some help with regard to what exactly it means and how I can fix it.
Also my phone won't shut down properly. The lights on the bottom buttons stay on and I have to manually force it to reboot like I do to get it into recovery. The shortcuts in the rom aren't working for me.

I would put it into download mode and run odin or the Off ics to redo/repack your folders, then put CWM back on....idk
Just putting some ideas in, maybe the guru's will jump in on the thread...
Before nuking it like that... try going to mounts and storage and formatting cache
Although I'm not even sure that error is anything to worry about honestly...but i don't do nandroids personally so Idk for sure.
And Joe....stop quoting the op, please?
Does this error have anything to do with the CWM version being used? Its calling for the external sd card isn't it?
No it's calling on the /cache partition which is in the phone...
But it could be the cwm version, it's looking for a recovery log that it can't open.
I can't do anything with the cache. Its like it doesn't even recognize it. I noticed this when I went to throw another rom on and clear out my caches and it would just freeze. I left it for a half hour once just for the heck of it but it didn't do anything. I had to reboot the phone into recovery again.

What will "fix permissions" do?
I would downgrade cwm, I've been using brawway's touch version since he released his latest, without issue and i think that was in April or may
And fixing permissions, makes the permissions of all apps and .jars be what they should be.
Example: apps in /system/app need rw-r-r permissions, sometimes pasting some of those in will not set them correctly, and if you're doing a bunch at a time is a real pain to go through individually and change them, so that option makes sure everything everywhere matches the permissions needed. So, not applicable in this case.
Well I managed to get another rom on anyway so I don't think its big deal now. I think I might just leave my phone alone now
The collectives 4.04 aocp rom is pretty freaking sweet lol.

What is the equivalent of the chkdisk dos command to make the android system rebuild the directory structure? Can you do that through a terminal emulator?
i dunno if there is one other than just reflashing
So basically just flash a new cwm over the one I have now?

If u could get it to boot. And manually set permissions for android.policy.jar that would fix the shutdown issue.

Awesome. Ok, last question. I'm assuming I can just load this onto my phone via Odin like I did my original version of cmw?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Yeah, That or there is also a .zip that can be flashed from your current version of cwm.
If doing it that way after it flashes go to advanced option and reboot recovery, then once in the new one, clear caches and see if that fixes the issue.
Or, just use Odin then boot into recovery and wipe, either way is up to you, but seeing as how it's cwm that's the issue, i might lean towards using Odin myself... Just note that will increase your flash counter iirc, if you care.

Has anyone else ran into the issue of the stock SMS notifications not going away? When I get a txt message, regardless of how many, it always says I have an unread message. This happened with OnlyOne HYFR and then With Goldie also. Is this a known issue, or is there a way I can just quickly correct this?
Also, I can't find anything that says how to diable the scrolling wallpapers. I wanted static wallpapers for each home/menu screen.
Any advice is appreciated.

No camera after rooting/overclocking Serious Help Needed!

Hi alll
Its problem after problem for me now.
I just rooted and overclocked (as told here- http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-gt-i9300-overclock-ninphetamin3-custom-kernel-103349/) my S3.
Everything works fine but when i start camera, at first its not responding then an error comes "failed to start camera" and it shuts down.
PLease tell me solution. I need serious help!
I'd just reinstall camera.apk and push it to system/app.
Can't say why this happened.. and there's probably a simpler solution

If you're going to be reinstalling the camera apk, I would recommend using this camera mod by HyperX:

try updating your camera firmware by dialing the following code in dialer *#34971539#. also give other third party camera apps a go , by that you can confirm whether its a problem with your camera apk or other stuff
Try taking it out of system/app
Installing it
Then use titanium backup to revert to system app by long pressing camera.apk
If all else fails flash stock rom in recovery. Or did u have a backup from before the camera messed up?

Easier solution would be to just flash another rom with stock kernel and see
Skickat från min GT-I9300 via Tapatalk 2
I had the same issue after rooting, only it's not limited to the Camera app! Any app which uses the rear camera causes the phone to first stop responding, then crash (screen goes off, have to hold power button for ~10 seconds to reset the phone or pull the battery).
I return to the stock (unrooted) ROM and all is good again.... this is annoying! An unrooted Android (especially the SIII) is like a rocket launcher with no rockets
Okay, a little more testing yielded that the Galaxy S3 Toolkit provided root images cause problems with my S3!
The CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar image worked fine (though I want to restore stock Recovery afterward, which isn't the easiest thing to do but I'm just lazy).
So yes, if you root and Camera-apps crash your phone, restore Stock then use a DIFFERENT rooted image until you find the right one for your phone

Bcos i even replaced the apk and results are same--> unresponsive camera giving error "Failed to Start Camera" after 15 seconds approximately.
Downloading stock flash....
And @LaKraven, You mean to say that we cannot root s3?
Also, IF i want to test different CWM, you mean that i will have to root, then unroot again, then again root!!?? Or just flash again with new CWM without rooting with odin?
I didnt use toolkit, i used odin to root. Using CWM 6.4. 6.1 Gave me error at recovery mode-> "Falied to mount sdcard" while 6.4 worked fine. Only camera......
Any tips guys?? Please i really need camera!!

Is /data/cfw empty? If so (and only if so), then place either http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29498117&postcount=261 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29601758&postcount=315 in there. On my XXBLG8 phone I have SlimISP_ZD.bin in there - owned by media:system with mode 644 - but some phones need the GD module in there. After you've done that, flash either the Siyah kernel which accounts for this problem (and if you want overclocking) or the GalaxSih kernel which also accounts for this problem but does not allow you to overclock (which suits me fine - I have no reason to OC a quad-core phone)

Screen orientation flipped after installing A1 Kernel

Hello all,
I tried installing the A1 Kernel today for the USB charging and the voodoo sound, among other things. I flashed it by wiping the caches, and then installing the kernel from the .zip file. Everything installed well, and I was able to boot up and use the device, and even overclock, test the usb charging, and run a simple benchmark through the quadrant app.
After I did the benchmark test, for some reason the orientation of my device flipped, i.e when I would hold it the normal way, the screen would flip, then when I held it that way, it would flip again, thus the screen would always be upside down. I never changed any settings or anything so I'm not sure why this occurred or how to fix it. I tried toggling the auto-rotate switch a few times, rebooting, and even wiping the caches again to no avail. Luckily I made a nandroid backup just before flashing it, so I was able to get back to the CM 10.1 kernel and the problem was remedied, but I want to be able to take advantage of the A1 kernel.
If anyone can shed some light on the situation, with a reason or fix that would be terrific.
Thank you!
Did you flash the correct version? There are stock and cm versions of A1 kernel.

I downloaded the CM version from the xda thread. It says it's meant for 3G but It will work on the wi-fi version as well.
One thing I did differently was I download the zip file straight from my tablet, and then ran Cwm recovery to install it from the SD card, rather than downloading it on my computer, transferring it to my tablet, and then installing it. Could that be it?

Tried posting there a few days ago before even flashing asking a couple questions about the Kernel with no response. I guess there isn't much activity in that thread anymore.
Update
So I tried installing the A1 kernel again to see what would happen, and I ended up with the same result. For some reason after I install this kernel, the device orientation gets all topsy turvy: the screen will either always be flipped, or the screen will not rotate at all.
I restored my nandroid backup and everything is normal now, running the CM kernel instead of the A1.
Can anyone help me?
