Currently I'm running stock (but rooted) 2.11.605.9 getting great battery life and performance. I don't have any problems besides the fact that BT Phone Book Access Profile (BT PBAP) doesn't work with my car.
The only reason I'm considering moving away from stock is to get working BT PBAP.
When I originally tried the FactoryROM based on the open mobile leak, its BT PBAP worked fine with my car kit, but that was before the MMS fix, and some other things had been tweaked, so I went back to stock.
Now there is also the Thunderstick rom, with more tweaks and customizations.
Is one better than another? Is one more stable than the other for daily use for someone who relies heavily on their phone and needs it working? Are there any other ROMs based on the Open Mobile leak that have been tweaked for Verizon?
been running thunderstick for a while now. It's mostly stock with bloat removed and a bunch of tweaks to make the phone better. it also has a custom kernel with speed tweaks and governors.
I'm a couple versions back as it's been rock solid enough to not need to update. You can try both out to see what you like. You aren't stuck with the first one you pick. And only you can decide what's best for you.
Thanks.
I tried Thunderstick, but unfortunately, I still can't get Verizon's visual voice mail (yes I pay for it) working

Did you ever get Verizon Visual VM to work with Thunderstick? I just flashed to it yesterday

No. And I gave up. I'm back to stock.
Please let me know if you get it working

Edit the two lines in the build.prop, reboot, and see post #46 of that thread for the APK to install (or download from -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwxLDEsImNvbS52encudnZtLmFuZHJvaWRjbGllbnQiXQ.. ), and it worked to log in, download and play back voice mails.

It would seem that the original *#*#1472365#*#* no longer works. It just stays at the dial menu. Have also tried with SGS info and servicemode apps and neither of those works on the new JI2 either. Any idea how to access those menus now? I would like to test the ms-assisted setting vs standalone with the new software.
I know eugene as a version of lbsmodetest that will do this but am hoping to stay purely stock for testing purposes.
If you're running LauncherPro or ADW, you can make a shortcut to it on your homescreen. In LP, long-press>shortcut>activities>lbstestmode>lbstestmode(first one)
Unfortunately I am running completely stock for now.
I dont understand, if you are running "completely stock" then it works. If you are running Eugene's ROM then you are not running stock.

It does not work on the *BETA* stock rom that was released, and currently in this rom without changing the files for the rom there is no way to access these settings.
Download "any cut" in the market. Use that app to make a shortcut to lbstestmode. Don't spend too much time trying to FIX the gps settings if you are one of the unlucky ones that still have problems after the last fix.
I am probably late to the game but didn't see this anywhere so thought I would just mention - I just flashed this Gingerbread based ROM real quick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092565 and then flashed the APK mentioned here http://www.xda-developers.com/android/skype-2-available-for-other-devices/ and made a quick test call from my netbook to my Streak - It wasn't perfect (could be due to slow network connection and not doing a clean install of the new ROM) but anyway, it did work.
So I just did a quick video call to my parents and confirmed that it works very well - I was also able to switch from the front camera to the back camera.
Asking because I don't know; What is the difference between Skype and Fring? Fring all day with my kids and seems to be the same as what you just did with your parents.
do you need gingerbread for this to work?
yes, I believe so you need gingerbread for this.
hopefully they will eventually release an app for those of us with devices still stuck on official 2.2
Fring is a cool app but I am not sure if they have a desktop version - I have only used it once on a friend's phone. Frankly I have been using Oovoo for some time now to call my parents and it has worked great, but I have MANY more contacts who use Skype and didn't feel like spending the time or energy to try and get them all to switch.
Yes - for sure you need Gingerbread - I took a stab at installing it on Streakdroid 1.9 but it was a no go. As soon as I installed the above ROM and then installed the APK it worked.
As a side note the above ROM seems to be working great - I had been planning to install DJ Steve's Gingerbread ROM but will have to wait until I have some time.

i did on steves gingerbread....dont work. force close.
What would happen if I just change my build.prop to read version 2.3.3?
Are there other areas of the phone that confirm gingerbread?

My guess is it would force close - just changing the version doesn't actually make it Gingerbread so there would be compatibility issues. I will check later since I am going to be playing around with another Streak tonight.
Yep - force close.
I have searched on phone issues and even messagebank... There was a post that seemed similar but not the same.
Unfortunately I can't say just where this issue came in; I only noticed it yesterday and, as mentioned in another thread, I have been trying out ROM flashing. My GUESS would be it has to do with flashing 'modem_CWM_I9300XXDLH7' but that is purely a guess because it is call related.
I have flashed a stock ROM, GT-I9300_XSA_1_20120710170916_9xjds9h0pm to install an Aussie ROM (phone from Kogan and was German model) and more recently flashed 'Kernel_CM10_20120820_Official_CWM' in preparation for trying a JB ROM. (I am planning on using 'I9300XXBLH4_Jelly_Bean_4.1.1_Clean_Stock_Rom_Nandroid_Backup' for a first try)
SO, phone seems to be working well; I managed to crash it (stuck on Samsung screen) but have backups that brought me back up to where I was without too many issues.
But, I noticed yesterday I got a Telstra Messagebank notification for a missed call/voice message. It says it came from +101 but when I click the notification it takes me to a Telstra recording saying the number is not connected. This used to work. Dialling 101 works just fine and I have looked to try to locate where the phone has decided MB is now +101 but can't find it.
It's not a biggie, and I figure maybe I need to call Telstra to get their info resent or something, but it is a little annoying to have to dial each time instead of just press the notification.
Any ideas of what to try? I'm about to flash the JB ROM so if that fixes it I will be back (hopefully without dramas ) soon. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
XXBLH4 is a really old JB leak, flash XXDLH8 instead (DLH9 is newer but has a keyboard bug)
As for your problem, I don't know what to tell you but your carrier won't be able to help you as you have unofficial firmware on your phone and that may be the reason and they will only be able to assist you in regards to the official Telstra fw.
Is it really that big of a deal to dial 101?

that is a strange one. It seems as though it's trying to dial 101 as an international call (with that plus in front of it making it a call to USA number 01), when it should have picked it up as +61 101.
Out of curiosity, what does it come up with when you tap and hold on the SMS and go to "View Message Details"?
@nodstuff - The reason for I9300XXBLH4_Jelly_Bean was because, a. I found it and the file date was something like 25/8/12, and because the description said it has been cleaned up and all bloatware removed. I don't recall seeing XXDLH8 for download but I am new here... I was thinking along the lines of getting something known and stable for my first JB flash.
@Dinty - I don't get a 'View Message' option on a long tap, I get a menu with, Call +101, Send Msg, Edit numbr, Add to Contacts, Send Nmbr, Add to Reject list, Delete.
Further info just noticed - older call from MB (30/8 - prior to new Modem flash) came in as Int'l M'Bank with #101# so somewhere the MB number has altered.
I doubt Telstra will have an issue with the FW etc. It isn't their phone. I bought outright and would be speaking to a rep - IIRC when I got my Moto Defy from the dealer a couple of years back they had to send me a txt which I saved and it set up the Telstra info on the phone. Might be mistaken in memory of that though...
@nodstuff - do you have a recommendation for a XXDLH8 ROM to flash? I'm looking for stable with some optimisation and as clean of standard apps as possible. I've got an Apps backup in Titanium Pro that I figure I can use to put my new apps back.
Also, is the Keybd issue with LH9 itself or just with some ROM's?
thanks for the help...

Well don't flash XXBLH4 so, its very buggy and not stable.
XXDLH8 is very stable and pretty bug free.
There are a few downloads for it (cwm flashable, Odin or an ota package. I suggest cwm or Odin method as the ota method is quite tricky.)

I believe you're talking about the automatic set-up service. I think this is what you mean:
http://www.configure.telstra.com.au/telstra/index.jsp
Not sure it will have any effect on that messagebank issue, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to try!

Thanks for the link - that looks what I originally had to do over the phone, but then I didn't have a Telstra account set up at that point.Didn't work unfortunately. le sigh!
So, I am now the owner of a JellyBean phone, all working nicely and with my apps installed again. All went smoothly and I just chose my purchased and download apps from my titanium backup and Voila!!!
I took the advice and installed GT-I9300_WanamLite.XXDLH8.V3.0.RC4.NO-WIPE - I thought about the DLH9 version of it but saw a note in the thread about keybd issues, so, taking the advice above I DL'd the DLH8 version.
Only thing I have noticed so far is it seems a bit slow on the USB charging. Once it's at 100% I will disconnect and see if maybe power is draining too fast, then look at ways to improve battery.
Just did some trials of the MB issue and noticed something odd - if I try to create a Contact I am unable to enter numbers in the name field. I also tried to set up my mobile banking and using the app provided by the bank I cannot use numbers for my ID, even though it is an 8 number ID. The Keybd simply will not change to numbers until I go to the PW line - is this the keybd error you mentioned as being present in DLH9, nodstuff??
Hm... so I took a chance and flashed Wanamlite's keybd fix; the thread says it is for DLH9 but I figured what the heck, if it fails the phone I can easily reflash the ROM.
Seems to have worked. Gonna leave a comment over there about it because I seem to have noticed something not mentioned by others.
I broke my wifi tether. I am rooted STOCK via Adams Suck it Verizon program, I installed the record call mods and the ultra cool light saber sounds for my s pen. I added Wifi toggle button and the shutter sound option and black background thru csc menu. Tether was working used it to stream netflix on the PSC for about 4 episodes of Twilight Zone. ALL good so far. After I added the new custom Perseus kernal it stopped working.
No brainer right? must be a problem in the kernel that isnt addressed yet. Still got to love the great work from our Devs and not the end of the world. I created a stock Kernel from Adams Revision3 rom that I had already downloaded and put it in thru recovery.
Still no WIFI tether. Now I'm stuck my "no brainer" just became "oh eff." Anyone have ideas on what else may need to be done? Or what I might have done unintentionally. I can reboot to stock and start tweaking all over but I really didnt want to and please dont comment on the fact that I'm too much of an idiot to have made a back up before I lost the tether.:crying::crying:
I'm still interested in any ideas but I wont be able to implement the fixes anyway to try. Gave up and Reinstalled the rooted stock rom complete already.

I'd say it depends on what you value. For me, I'm about to flash stock again because I need NFC and I'm tired of fumbling with other stock features that are incompatible with CM12 (remote, camera). I wish I could do without the 170 or so sprint apps, but oh well. Only thing missing from stock zv8 is tweakbox

I decided to try both. CM12 had a couple of issues that I couldn't get around. I went with rooted stock Lollipop eventually. I just wish I could get the stock Lollipop lockscreen that they use in CM12.
Okay, hear me out. I've tried out both. I always end up flashing some kind of AOSP rom because I love the stock feeling of pure android. You don't really get that full pure android experience on stock. With that said, whenever I flash AOSP roms such as CM12, I always find myself returning to stock within days of usage because I just can't get over the fact that stock lollipop ZV8 is so much more impressive, in terms of camera quality and snappiness, NFC, etc. I feel more stable and secure on stock. Of course I am running stock ZV8 pre-rooted and I have most unessential bloatwear uninstalled. Also, with CM12, you don't get the sprint Visual Voicemail app and it makes listening to voicemail weird (of course you can dial your number or sideload app but its not the same).
TLDR: I find myself returning from CM12 to Stock everytime because Stock so much better (Camera quality is better, use of NFC, no bluetooth issues, etc.)

Thanks for this. I was debating giving CM12 another shot and restoring my set up stock if I didn't like it but you saved me some time/trouble.
How do I uninstall the bloatware, and what exactly did you uninstall?

Alright!! Uninstalling bloatware is incredibly easy to do. You can use any file explorer that has root capabilities to access system files and edit/modify them. Personally, I use rootexplorer but keep in mind it is not free. You can use alternatives such as "System app remover" (not sure if that works but i googled it for you) which is free.
After you have installed a system file explorer, you can go into the very root of your phone storage and go find a folder called "system" and go into it and you'll find another folder called "app" and once you're there, you will find a bunch of APK's or folders that hold the stock-installed applications on your phone. Basically, from this point on, you can pretty much pick and uninstall whatever apps you don't like.
I have removed most google applications such as Maps, keyboard, Lg G3 keyboard and calender, youtube, music, smart notice, weather, live wallpapers, etc., but its really up to what you want to keep and not keep. Also, you don't want to uninstall anything if you do not know what it is (example: you find an app called "alsdfnasire.apk", if you do not know what it does, its best to not remove it because it might result in a bootloop).
I don't have a list of what I uninstalled but if you really really want a list, I can reinstall stock and write down everything I delete for you, just let me know!! <3
Also, I really recommend trying out CM12, you might fall in love with it. You don't want to limit yourself to just stock. Its so easy to go back to your current rom as long as you backup with twrp recovery. Just a suggestion <3 <3 <3.
