Hey Guys, just a heads up, but we got the green light for the new forum to be added. The Administrators have decided to name them:
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Android Development
AT& Samsung Galaxy S II Ported Development
So obviously all Hellraised and Flashoholic ROMs will go into the Ported Dev Forum and all the i777/AT&T Original based ROMs will stay in the Android Dev Forum.
Its looking like it will be created and setup for us this weekend, so prepare for both forums to be easier to navigate and it wont seem so crazy in just one forum for development.
Does that include bases that were built from i9100 firmwares?
XWLA4 bases for example, since we just got a wave of them.
You edited your post after I quoted you... roms that are build from the ground up (no matter the base) will stay in Original.
So what is left then, cause I still only see ShoStock and UnNamed as being the only ones still on AT&T base.
Then Entropy's & Siyah's kernel, scripts, as the other stuff that would belong here.
Unless I am missing something.
I think I am going to like this, but boy is it going to empty out the Original Dev. forum. I can think of maybe 5 ROMS that will stay.
Roms that are just Hellraised or flashoholic'd will be moved to ported... because they were just ported.
All roms, like for instance Binnacle because Pirateghost did it from the ground up (even though its an i9100 base) will stay in Android Development. He didnt port over an already existing i9100 rom.

Oh ok then its not all XWLA4 bases just those that were from the i9100 section.
Edit - Just saw your previous edit, ok then it won't be dead in this section after all.
Now I like the changes again! You scared me for a moment.

Makes sense, thanks Red. You should put that info in the main post, for dummies like me.
Chris: I bought this phone fairly early, so I was flashing design-gears roms (2 of them here). There's Serendipity/UnNamed which are also veterans. ShoStock came a bit later. Theres also little ones here and there that died out quick.
Yea I know about Serendipity, but that hasn't been touched in forever.
Shostock is still updating, while UnNamed might not be its still has a good fanbase, I think someone is trying to resurrect the rom though if I read the posts correctly.
I am happy for the changes though.
Sick liking it
Yeah, my interpretation of it is:
If you started with I9100 stock firmware, and started doing things from the ground up (such as following my Sh1tROM guide) are still original development.
If some other person created a ROM and you ported it - it's Ported.
That leaves cases where the original I9100 firmware developer hellraises and posts here - I believe that it can stay, since it is still that developer's original work.
Wish you had that guide earlier, would have made it easier on me.

Uh, it depends on how close it is to the rom that you ripped off... if its just a clean Samsung base (dosent matter what phone it was for) and you did everything else, then it goes in Original. If it s just a hybrid of this rom and that rom that has already been created, then it goes in Ported.

Segregate the ported/hellraised i9100 roms from the i777 AT&T custom roms!

I still think that all i9100 roms should go into the new forum.
That way those of us who are looking forward to AT&T/i777 custom roms
will not be confused by seeing a lot of i9100 custom roms in the forum
ported/hellraised or not.
In any case my suggestion is to have a seperate i777/AT&T custom rom forum.
(at first that's what I thought you were talkiing about)

The issue with this, which has already been mentioned in this thread by others, is that the Original Android Development would be empty with about 4 roms and 2 kernels, while the other Ported forum would be super busy because 94% of all of our roms are currently based off of i9100 firmware... so it really wouldnt be offloading the mass chaos that we are currently experiencing.
Think about when ICS drops for the i9100, the Ported forum will be BOOMING while the Original will be dead, so it defeats the purpose of creating a new forum.

I'd really like to get the Galaxy S2, but not without Cyanogen Mod support. What do you think are the chances that the Galaxy S2 will get CM? The Galaxy S still has no stable CM Rom.
Does a bear **** in the woods?

Polar bears don't.
But why doesn't the Galaxy S have a stable CM ROM then?
Stock Media Codecs > CM
if they find a way to keep all the goodies from Samsung then I'm all for it
Frankly, I don't care about the Samsung programmes. If it can be turned off, then ok, but I'd rather have the whole CM experience.
This hardly seems like the right forum for this thread...
So what's the right forum, if not the Galaxy S II Android Development Forum?
Android Development should only contain threads based on actual projects/ROMs/kernels/etc being developed. Discussions about what may or may not be coming to the device should go in general. Best rule of thumb in my book: if you're not actually developing something yourself, a thread shouldn't be started here.
Sorry if I came off like a prick - I just know that this ends up becoming more work for the mods who have to comb through and move threads around.
Also I apologize for theoretically hijacking your thread - Just trying to help keep people in the know
hopefully it will get CM
i really cant stand touchwiz

Maybe a moderator can move the thread into the appropriate forum.
What I really like to know is why the Galaxy S still hasn't got a stable release. Is this also to be expected with the S2?

The SGS2 is similar to the SGS in many ways, therefore CM will be difficult to port over.
Especially that there is no Nexus S 2 (a lot of CM7 is from the Nexus S)
Don't expect CM7+ to be running on the SGS2 anytime soon, although it probably eventually will. That's unless anything else happen (a/a genius comes along b/samsung open source more stuff c/Nexus S 2 is released d/sgs2 shares even more with the sgs than I though and current work can be ported over more easily)
This phone is fast enough without CM7. A clean up of the stock ROM, a new launcher and its sweet enough!

A shame that Cyanogen has chosen the G2x as his next phone. The Galaxy S2 is way better than the G2x.

Well, apparently they have a Galaxy S, otherwise there wouldn't be Release Candidates.
The purpose of this forum is for XDA members to post any ROMs they make, which are derived from existing Galaxy S II ROMs (within the scope of the rules). We listened to your feedback, in wanting to separate ROMs from derivative ROMs to avoid confusion and to protect the original creators (the chefs) of such ROMs, and to make it easier to find major developments.
This forum is for ROMs that aren't an original creation by you in terms of the underlying software, meaning, they've been either 1. developed with assistance from a kitchen or are 2. a re-skinning/re-themeing/minor adjustment of a particular ROM developed by someone else.
We welcome your derviative ROMs, as they give even more choice to XDA users. When you post in this forum, we ask that you be respectful of the original creator by following rule 12, particularly:
1. Linking back to the source ROM
2. Mention the creator of the ROM upon which your deriviative ROM is based.
Thank you for your cooperation
P.S. This is a bit of an experiment. Should it make sense, we'll roll it out to other forums on XDA.
Well, finally you can seperate the men from the boys... !! Nice thought..!!
Good idea, but how do I get to this ROM from the XDA app?

Personally I think this Derivative Rom subsection is a bit ridiculous. How does Litening Rom end up in that section. It was one of the first Rom's created for the SGS2 and sure it's a derivative of the original firmware but whose isn't. If that's the case why isn't Pusler_G2 Rom in there as well. With that line of thinking all Rom's should be placed in the derivative section except CM7, oh wait, but his is a derivative of AOSP. I think XDA's arbitrary judgement on what is a derivative or not needs some further consideration. IMO all your going to do is piss off developers with this new sub-section.

+1. Not a good idea. We need to be VERY clear on the rules here.. Right now, they don't seem to be clear, and or are not being applied correctly.
Anyone knows where Litening ROM is based from? Ive read the OP and saw litening is included. Im just curious
I like the idea of tidying up the fourm there alot of threads and alot of ROMS coming out.
I think that you would need to make clear rule on which section a new or current ROM should be in.
The main example which seems to be going on is between VillanROM and LightngPRO. They did appear near the same time, we know that Villian came first but they are each the individuals work are they not?
In creating the seperation you might end up giving the impression that one ROM is better than another.
Could you not make splits like Samsung ROMS/ASOP/Kernels?
Themes already have their own section.

They are meaning that if it is a derrivative of another members ROM, not if it is made from the stock ROM, it is obvious that they have to be derrived from somewhere. and silly to say that all ROMs should be in here because they come from stock.
from what i can tell the section is trying to protect the work of ROM makers, by highlight the original work and moving works based on a ROM to this section.
Say if i took Villian ROM, adviced people to use Jame Bonds Kernel not CF. Themed it and removed some app. i have made a release but it is not my work the base was villian, so it was derived from that. hence it would go in this section.
EDIT: But i still think the hard part of a section like this is telling what the ROM was derived from. Who is going to do the checking

Exactly my point mate!
That's why it is pointless...
I'd like to point out that my rom is not derived at all, i even explained in my OP what was my IDEA and how i was able to get somethings new compared to other custom ROM.
It is the first rom based on XXKG1 release with HW accelerated browser, and it's my own experiment to built an Hybrid ROM (deodexed/odexed). In addition i am using a new kernel developed by angelom in italy!
I did everythings starting from the official (samfirmware) release XXKG1. I didn't use kitchen for theming i have done it by myself, if you don't believe me you can double check it in my Italian Blog that i realized video tutorials on how to theme for LG Dual!
That said, of course each developer use some cool stuff or mod that have been shared here, otherwise what's the point to have a developers community???
Even if there is some mod ready to be included inside a ROM, i always prefer to decompile things do a reverse engineering on smali code and remake mods by me in order to assure that stuff won't break things in my ROM (i.e. FC)
Sorry, but i like to be fair and i wanted to write it down!

You are absolutely right, there are many dev who have done extraordinary things with their roms and put a lot of hours on their rom making. the only thing that has happened now is that you must go to two different places to look up different rom.
Agree. The Development forum is too big and confusing. It better be split in to:-
1) Samsung-StockROM-Mods (Insanity, VillainROM etc)
2) AOSP/Cyanogen-Based (MIUI, CM7 etc..)
3) Kernels
The so called derivatives/themer's ROMs should ideally be pushed to a sub-forum under Themes.
I don't like this idea. Somebody is bumping up his/her ego for nothing.
Mods/admins are creating illusion for first class and second class roms.
Just my two euros.

Hi all,
What are the benefits of flashing my AT&T GS2 with I9100 software? Will this brick my device?
Thanks in advance!
The 'benefits' are:
1. No working buttons. i9100 has only 3 buttons, some of them are in the opposite position than i777.
2. No voice calls or dropped voice calls.
Stick with firmwares/ROMs that are based on i777.

Actually there are some benifits in flashing your i777 phone with the i9100 rom,
for starters it will be an excellent learning experience for you and you will learn
how to use Odin3 and all the button combinations on your phone.
After learning all of that stuff no one will ever call you a NOOB !!!

If the ROM includes bootloaders, it could possibly hardbrick your phone.
Otherwise - it'll be a good lesson in returning back to stock.
It IS possible with some effort and knowledge to port an I9100 ROM to the I777, but you can't just straight-flash.
Designgears did it with Perception, I'm working on a "proof of concept" port for SensatioN by Crysis21. If Crysis21 gives permission, I'll be posting the PoC port including a high-level guide for how I got there to the development forums.

I am Hoping that more "porting" of roms happens as time goes on because if you take a peek over in the other forums, the have some many tweaks, kernals, and roms than one can dream of! It makes me drool when I see it. One reason why there are so many choices and development is because the phone has been out longer, but the biggest reason is because they have devs all over the world cooking up goodies. I wish there was an easy way of porting goodies.
Also if you flash a i9100 it isn't necessarily true that you wont get data or make a call, more than likely it you will get data even if it flashes a modem. But as the other Guy said, your button mapping will be off and you wont be able to use your back key. All the other keys will work. Even that you could easily fix by going in and changing the mapping

Some of that I9100 stuff is utter and total crap...
However, I did have success in porting an I9100 ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19000364#post19000364
I describe the process there. I haven't posted to dev yet, as I didn't do THAT much development work and I want the ROM dev's permission to do more than post in a rather obscure thread. If I do post to Dev, it's going to be more of a "proof of concept" post, I really don't plan on maintaining that port as I'm on a "if I haven't done it myself, I'm not running it" kick for the purposes of learning the Android userland side of things.

My phone is an HTC Desire Z, but my sister has an SII. Long story short, she heard about Android 4 and it's cool features, and wants to try them out. Her phone is rooted, and I flashed a couple ICS ROMs, but have noticed that they are a mishmash of AOSP and Samsung stuff.
For my phone, we've got a few pure ICS builds, and a few ICS + Sense 4/3.6 builds. The differentiation is quite plain to see. Coming to the SII threads, I don't really know if I'm on the right forum, since there are like three different Android Development threads.
Can someone help me? I just want pure AOSP. Like CM9. No TouchWiz stuff.

There is me trying to find ICS actually with TW.
G development is separate as its a different hardware .
Original Development is as it says .

CM9? For what I know that's not ready yet... is it?
I mean, in the Desire Z development section, we're still in Beta stage. Camera stuff isn't really okay yet.
Can't speak for CM9, but I can speak for D4 rom (which is based off the latest CM9 nightlies anyway). Everything is working (except HDMI out, I believe). Battery life is acceptable, and no random crashes or anything like that.

Learn to search and read and you'll find answers.
You never know, your searching might eventually lead you to things like http://teamhacksung.org/wiki/index.php/CyanogenMod9:GT-I9100:Nightly:Known_issues maybe even a development thread and at a stretch a Q&A thread.
Good luck on your quest.

Thanks... I've been searching and googling for two days now... That's why I resorted to posting here.
That CM9 nightly looks good. Think I will try that. Thank you, guys.
Hi all,
I can say that definitely something bad is happening to this part of SGS2 topic (original development). I log everyday, waiting for some ROMs to test, but there are none!
If you check the index thread, it was updated on 22 March (almost 2 months ago).
Also, since ICS was rolled out for SGS2, there are dozens of AOSP/AOKP ROMs in [Android development], but in [Original anroid development] there is only:
21-Mar-12----Batista70 FOXHOUND EDITION 0.3----Views: 1,400,000
I really hope that not all of the developers have moved to other devices or to AOSP/AOKP, but it looks like that's the case.
Anyone has any idea what's going on? Summer is still far away...
Well, just looking through the first page, I saw:
FoxHound ROM;
HyperDroid ROM;
Slim ROM;
Clean Blank ROM;
CheckROM
Not sure what your on about. If your not content with this sub-section, try the Android Development Section, plenty to flash there.
Chris.
The guy who started the "[INDEX]" threads in both the Original Development and the Development forums hasn't been updating his threads.
That doesn't mean development hasn't continued though.
It was nice of the guy to build index threads, but given he's not really updating them, it may end up causing more confusion like this, unfortunately.

There are only one or two sammy ICS ROMs. People are waiting since ICS rollout for checkrom ICS and others as well...
I'm not fun of AOSP so Android Development section is not an option for me.
Cheers!

have you even looked in there???
It isnt only aosp roms in there
first you got to understand the difference between android deveopment and orignal android development and you will understand why there is no big activity.
Well devs owe us no favours its up to them as to what and when they build a rom .
Usually find someone donates them a new model and they move on or they get sick and tired of the whiners and stupid repetitive questions and move on .
Solution for the OP big donation to a dev .

As far I can understood there is a plenty to choose from... Now u can even dual boot 2 ICS rom-s so there is a lot of options. To develop originally something demands time so patience would be welcome...
