I use to install APKs via adb. Even I made the nautilus script in Linux by which I can install an APK file by just one click in my SGA attached through cable. (If anyone's using Ubuntu, I could share it).
Anyway, here is what you got to do..
place your .zip in sdcard anywhere (let's say /sdcard/update.zip is your flashable zip)
1) Connect your SGA, open terminal type "adb reboot recovery". It will let you in recovery mode.
2) Type "adb shell" to access your SGA remotely.
3) Type "recovery --update_package=/sdcard/update.zip"
and there you are! DONE!
OR
And yeah, you could also try to install "CWM Manager", and choose the option Install "Update.zip". It will automatically boot into recovery mode and start updating it.. There's absolutely not necessary to stick with ADB.

[Q] Can't boot into download mode

I had to install clockwork mod in my galaxy ace and hence I was trying to boot in download mode. But mistakenly I pressed the Volume increase button+home+power
and it was showing samsung and ARM9 mode at top left. I took the battery off and tried to switch it on in the normal way, it was working then. Again I switched it off and now pressed volume down key+home+power and it just showed "downloading" on the screen for hours. My phone is rooted and have recently flashed the XXKPH 2.3.4 . Please help me.
That is Download Mode .
Connect it to USB and use ODIN .

You can install CWM through recovery: hold menu when booting the phone, make sure you have the CWM.zip on your SDcard and choose install zip, and select CWM using the volume keys to scroll up and down.

So I just tried to reboot to recovery, and got an "!" and then went to blue CWM, but then when I try to restart phone it's just putting me into blue recovery, and I can't seem to access any of the settings, and when I click anything I just get the hat icon. What's going on?

Go to the market and download "Reboot Recovery" a free app.
Then there will be no need to use rom manager.
All this app does is reboots you into cwm recovery and nothing else.
Just one click on the app's icon is all it takes.
Here is the link for "reboot recovery" http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/reboot+recovery
You can also just hold the power button and select reboot recovery
if you are running any of the custom roms here in XDA.
Good luck!

It more or less a very good replacement for Rom Manager and its fully compatible with our new phones.
You really should not use rom manager anymore or you will have problems :
At least forget about rom manager until they fix it to be really compatible
with our newly aquired wonder phones

since u dont have a pc than download rom manger from market and install it and open rom manger and choose install recovery from there --choose your phn and there you go ..it done......
make sure u enable usb debugging before doing it and yes it involves a risk of getting stuck in recovery if u have a slow connection so try to link with your neighbour wifi and do it but yes no harm even if u try using mobile data .\\\good luck
-make sure u have latest rom manger from market and choose option lg p500 new if using gingerbread orelse p500 old if using froyo
-usb debugging enabled

[RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.3.2 for GT-I9300

ClockworkMod Touch Recovery 6.0.3.2 for Samsung Galaxy S3 *GSM* ONLY
This is the latest Touch Version from the ClockworkMod Site. I just packed it into a tar file so it can be flashed via Odin or Mobile Odin. Do not attempt to flash this image to the Snapdragon variant as it will not work.
DOWNLOAD LINK TO CWM 6.0.3.2 TOUCH
NOTE: CWM has the ability to 'choose backup format' to either the new .dup method with the blobs folder or the original .tar method where everything is in the date/time stamped folder. You can now ALSO 'create image zip' file from a NAND backup. Be patient with the zip backup option as it does take a while to create the zip (to be expected from a 1GB+ backup). Thank you for this addition koush it makes recovery alot more complete
QUESTION: Why are the backups size soo small now compared to the previous cwm backups?
ANSWER: Basically on the new cwm all the data is stored in a blobs folder in the clockworkmod folder. The backups folder now doesnt hold the actual data and instead the system and data files contain links to the files in the blobs folder (with the hash of the file as its filename). When you perform another backup only the changes have to be added so it performs incremental backups instead of full backups everytime. You can still flash different roms and back them up as any new data is stored in the blobs folder with the links in the backup folder. Several backups can share the same blobs file so over several backups the total file size of all the backups will be much much smaller. When you delete a backup via cwm you can then free space of the blob files that are no longer needed to keep everything tidy and make sure that no files are stored that arent referenced to any backup. If you don't free the space then any unused files will automatically be deleted when the next backup is performed.

How to Install ClockworkMod Touch
1. Download the attached tar file at the bottom of this post. DO NOT EXTRACT THIS FILE! If you end up with a recovery.img file then smack yourself and start again.
2. Download Odin (windows only) at the bottom if you don't already have it and unzip it to a folder on your PC
3. Reboot into Download Mode: Power off your device, Hold down the 'HOME' + 'VOLUME DOWN' buttons and press the 'POWER' button for about 2 seconds until a WARNING! Screen appears. Press the 'VOLUME UP' button to enter Download Mode.
4. Plug your usb cable in
5. Start Odin (double click Odin3_v3.04.exe).
NOTE: When Odin opens you should see that the first box at the top under ID:COM should turn blue and 'Added' should appear in the message box in Odin.
6. Make sure 'Auto Reboot' and 'F.Reset Time' are ticked in Odin and nothing else.
7. Click on the 'PDA' button in Odin and browse to the recovery-cwmtouch-6.0.3.2-GTI9300.tar file that you downloaded.
8. Click on 'Start' to flash CWM to your phone.
NOTE: You can see whats happening in the message box in Odin. When the flash completes you should see 'RESET' in the top left the box and your phone will reboot.
9. You now have CWM Touch Recovery permanently flashed
How to Access ClockworkMod Touch
1. Unplug the USB cable.
2. Shut down the phone.
3. Hold down the 'HOME' + 'VOLUME UP' buttons and press the 'POWER' button for about 5 seconds to enter Recovery Mode.
Stock Recovery being reflashed after a reboot?
There is an auto recovery restore system on stock roms that will reflash the Stock Recovery on a Stock Rom. If the restore files are renamed then CWM Recovery should not be overwritten after a reboot.
You need to be rooted and then delete or rename the following files:
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Click to collapse
You can then flash recovery without it being overwritten.
You can also do all this through the Galaxy S3 ToolKit
**All credit goes to to Koush and anyone else responsible for ClockworkMod**
wow will try that soon
thanks a lot!
flashed! and works like it should so far!

Nice one
Looking at some screenshots that I googled, it's just the regular recovery with the lines spaced out a bit more to be finger-friendly.
What we really need for the SGSIII is 4EXT Touch Recovery, but the dev only seems to support HTC devices.

Sorry but what are you talking about exactly? The Recovery in the first post is the CWM Touch Recovery with touch screen compatability. Im sure TWRP will support SGS3 eventually if you want a more icon based Recovery.

WTH. Aroma is not a recovery, it is a filemanager "flashed" from and running within recovery. Absolutely no idea what are you talking about here. If you "flashed" Aroma, surely you have a working recovery, so flash a different recovery from your current one.
