How its the battery on this device? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm thinking of switching my EVO 3d for this, just don't want to get something worst on battery life. So please don't mind to drop your Intel on this.

Battery life is variable like any other device.
How you have it setup, how you use it, how the phone came out of the factory. What rom you're running. What kernel you're running. What tweaks you've made. What modem you're using. Whether you use the phone in a low/fair/high signal strength area.
And a heap of other things.
Get the idea ?

When you first get it and play with it nonstop, probably 12 hours at most. Once you just use it as a phone and keep it in your pocket deep-sleeping all day, I get 48 hours out of it, frankenstein LA4 rom, stock voltage, siyah kernel.

I tend to get between 16-18 hours from my phone, with a lot of texting and playing games. This is the best phone in terms of battery life that I've owned.

i manage to squeeze 1d 12 hours at a moderate usage so i cant complain

+1 on this. 80% of the difference is in the changes you make and how you use it. All that withstanding, I'd still say that it's pretty good, especially compared to some devices.

Get about 4 hours screen on so more than happy with daily charge.
As already said by others there's so many variables since we all have different set ups.
Sent from the valley of the shadows......

OK
It depends how you use it.
When playing games, movies, etc battery will last about 4hours give or take
if you tweek cpu/voltage/screen/dual core/wifi+data you could get 24+ easly with normal usage (messaging/browsing/calls/social)
battery drains uber fast in low signal (wifi/gsm) areas or when holding in "death grip". but that's true for all devices.
overall the device has good battery life considering the power it has and screen size.

with custom rom sconcauteam wxla4 2 day but depends on the use that one makes

Thank you all for answering, I think I'm going for it.

[Q] How much battery life do you get with Obsidian v2?

Honestly the battery life on this is not good for me, with no use but about one call I get 10-11 hours tops. With constant use(essentially not stopping for sleep mode)browsing and just going to apps like xda and the market I get about 4, back on stock 2.1 before the JI6 update I could go days on standby. I've wiped battery stats plenty of times now and seem to get no noticeable change. Also I've noticed that my battery will charge fully in 2 hours.

The best two firmwares for me so far have been Bionix Final (JI6 based w/JI2 modem) and Obsidian v2. Following my usual daily routine I'm getting about 14-16 hours from Obsidian v2, which includes a smattering of phone calls and texting, about a half hour of solid app usage (ye olde lunch break at work) and frequent checking of the display for time (I'm a manager with a fairly large staff so staying on top of what time it is, is a critical thing for me). At work I live in a very marginal data connection zone, with the phone frequently switching back and forth from 3G to Edge as well, and this hasn't had quite the negative impact on battery life that JI6's baseband usually implied.
I did get slightly better battery life with Bionix Final, but not enough better to justify going back. It seems my experience are quite the opposite of yours, or at least very different. With this being the case, I'd just suggest you use an app with more granular monitoring capabilities (like for instance Spare Parts) to try to find out why your battery life is so poor. I would wager it's probably app related and not OS related. Best of luck regardless.
If i used the phone like a computer i would get like 4-6 hours of usage (that's non stop usage) but if i used it lightly i can get like 15-17 hours. I guess it's not possible for me to use the phone with heavy usage for more than 6 or 7 hours.

Trigger 3.3 beta

I just installed the new Rom TRIGGER 3.3-beta. This rom is very fast and the GPS is great. I also put on bali 1.8.4. But the battery drains fast. If you guys tried it out, and found a way to save battery can you please let tell us what you did to control it. I know its in beta version and is being tweaked on.
Thank you
Yea Im using the same Rom. Hate to break it to you but the battery life on most all android devices sucks. I have had 5 different android devices and the battery sucked on all of them. didn't matter if it was stock or custom Rom. ether way these devices just have ****ty battery life. You can make it a little better by turning down brightness and messing with other settings but when it comes down to it. it still sucks! Just my 2 cents!

Did you recondition your battery after flashing? I've had pretty good battery performance with the Bali kernels. I also tend to use the KB1 modem. It seems to give me the best battery. But each phone is a bit individualistic, and what works well for someone may not work as well for next person.

This is untrue as I have owned an android device since the G1. The battery did suck on the G1, but by no means does the battery suck on every android device. My guess is you probably never calibrated your battery or you just used it very heavily. There's also the possibility that every rom you tried sucked on those devices. I have consistently gotten a full day or more with Bionix NextGen V2 with the Bali kernel with moderate to heavy usage. It is true if you lower the brightness, turn off wifi, bluetooth and gps when you aren't using it that it will increase your battery life though.
I have reconfigured the battery and have the brightness turned all the way down. Dont use WiFi but battery still sucks compared to other smart phones.

can any of you post a screenie of this rom pls
Battery usage is hard to compare since there are so many variables. In my experience I generally have better battery life when visiting my parents. The area I live in is somewhat of a black hole for signal and I notice more battery drain here with the same rom/kernal setup and similar usage pattern. I believe the weak signal here causes a higher battery drain over all.
Of course this might not apply to your situation but it could be worth considering.

I'm not going to argue with you, I'm just going to state what the facts are.
THE BATTERY DOES NOT SUCK, MOST LIKELY IS USER ERROR
Lol. It isn't user error. I think you might just use your phone more heavily than others. One thing you have to realize when comparing the battery life of the phones are a) battery size, b) screen size, c) smartphone or stone age phone, d)**** you've done to the phone including ROM's/Kernals/Apps/Sync.
Personally, on days that I am working, I get about 8-10 hours out of my battery before it dies. When I am not at work I get about 23 hours out of my battery.
what is the major difference between trigger 3.2 and trigger 3.3?
Try using overstock instead, I've had pretty good battery life with it.
Im running trigger3.3 beta with overstock and the battery is great.

bahaha you must be kidding. like someone else said, it depends on soooo many variables and phones. I was running trigger rom and overstock kernel and was going down about 1-2% battery every hour while screen was off. I listen to pandora every morning for an hour to hour and half and would go down 5%. I've sat on the web watching tv on TV shows stream app for about 1-2 hours and went down like 15-20% when brightness is lowered.
It's all about the brightness, killing apps that enjoy sucking battery life and enjoy run constantly, and running an OC/UV kernel. You can also change it from the usual 3g/H connection down to E (edge) which uses alot less power also. Turn off or turn down auto sync on certain apps like facebook from every 10 minutes down to every few hours.
The screen is the biggest power consumer, so lower that, set it to automatic or all the way down to lowest brightness to save quite a bit of battery when using the phone.
Usually the second largest power consumer (if ur not a huge user of just one certain app) is when the screen is off and the phone is syncing and just running android. the solution is If you can find a decent UV kernel (overstock for android 2.2 was what I was using when on 2.2), you can slow your CPU down. Like on my vibrant I made a profile (on the SetCPU app) to undervolt it from 1,000mhz down to a conservative 400mhz max and 100mhz minimum when screen is off. This is very easy to do. sometimes I'd watch shows on that. I usually left it at a conservative setting and 800mhz and 100mhz min all day long when screen was on, sometimes at 400mhz if i wasnt doing much. It worked wonderfully for me.
Moral of the story, there are plenty of things to make your phones battery last longer than it normally would. The big one probably to get a well known kernel that can UV, then get SetCPU and make a few profiles to make your phone use less power.
BOOM!

terrible battery life!

Hi all, I'm new to this part of the xda forums as I had a nexus before, just got the upgrade to the Atrix, rooting, unlocking of bootloader everything went well but I just flashed Aura's from with feux kernel and im getting really really bad battery life, like I'm talking 4-5 hours. There is one process thats really confusing me, its just called "x" and its sitting there taking about 35% battery, my screen is taking 55% battery.
It's getting really annoying as my nexus used to give me about 12 hours and the only reason I moved to the atrix was to get the better battery life that I saw with all my atrix touting friends (they all had 1-2 days battery life) I'm about to flash homebase and see if that fixes it but I don't know whats going on. I have a UK MB860 and I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196747&highlight=t-mobile+root to root. Pleaseee can someone help!
X is the webtop and there is a fix somewhere for that (doesn't completely work). Just flash CM7 beta. Its much better than any other ROM and has the best battery life. Everything except the finger print scanner and webtop work.
Also I had really good battery on the Ying Yang ROM.

I think I might give CM7 a go you know, I loved CM on the nexus, even after it killed the memory chips it was still good! Im going to try it, is it really stable?
EDIT:
since updating to CM7 and Wiping my battery stats I have some how gained 39% battery!

Try alien, i had some battery issues with some other roms and kernels and tried alien and all is good. This phone comes with an 1930Mah battery one of the largest i've ever seen and it lasts me 12 hrs on heavy use.
battery stats
I've had great battery life on the atrix, now I'm getting a good look at the atrix on the 4800mah battery. I'm a heavy user and I could not get over 24 hours. And now I have 59 hours and I have yet to actually see how far I can take it. Cm7 beta. Juicey....
I find that all gingerbread roms have horrible battery life compared to froyo on the atrix. Cm7 battery is worse but the phone is smoother. Faux 1.3ghz kernel has even worse battery.
Regardless of the radio or magical method of resetting the battery state you use.
1:25 screen time and at 47% battery. Been off the charger for 6:15. It will make it through my 10hr shift with about 20% remaining if I'm lucky, usually I just toss it on the charger.
Background data is off, email and social apps are manual sync and wifi is off.

one weird thing I am seeing is the display which is at 0% brightness is using 91% battery
Also the better battery stats app says my actual battery is 91% but the phone is reporting 66% I wiped thenbattery stats but nothing!

I was just about to post that lol. Also make sure every time you flash a new rom you are at 100% if not that is a sure fire way to cheat yourself out of battery life. I don't know if I'm just one of "the lucky ones" but I easily get over 16+ hours with moderate usage. I'm running CM7 beta with quite a few things frozen.
Ok so I followed the guide to perfection and it didn't improve the battery life one bit! I'm trying hard to find a t-mobile radio I can flash as I have read around it could be my radio that is the culprit and I am also getting rubbish HSDPA readings, I should be getting full bars but since switching to homebase Im only getting one bar.
Using watchdog I have noticed that the Xorg process is using over 50% cpu which does not seem right to be and I believe that because its a linux process Watchdog can't kill it. Is there anyway of fixing this?
1) Uninstall Tango, Facebook and Handcent SMS if any of the three are installed. They are huge battery drainers and you can find less battery hogging substitutes
2) Freeze any unnecessary apps, I believe there is a thread somewhere in the General section that has a pretty decent freeze list (if you flash CM7, you will have very little to freeze but that's good!)
3) Keep brightness down to a minimum when you can, I've noticed kicking the brightness up rather high can be pretty demanding on your battery
4) Set SetCPU Profiles to something like this...
Screen Off 216/216
Charging 1100/216
In Call 456/216
Battery <20% 456/216
Battery <10% 216/216
5) If you have the proper kernel set the CPU govner to power saver.
6) Undervolt, test yours and never apply set on boot unless you are positive it's stable, mine are something like this...
1100 MHz -50mV
1000 MHz -50mV
912 MHz -50mV
750 MHz -50mV
608 MHz -100mV
456 MHz -150mV
216 MHz -200mV
This way when you're phone is idling with the screen off, in a call or low on battery it is undervolting heavily to save maximum amounts of battery
With this setup I can get 30+ hours pretty regularly with moderate-to-heavy usage (weekdays/non-work days), 22-25 hours with more heavy usage (work days) and close to 48 hours with little usage (weekends).
It all depends on your usage and your phone but I have found this setup here to work fairly well.
I am currently on CM7 Beta, stock CM7 radio and stock CM7 kernel, running at 1100/216 when above profile conditions aren't met. 32% been running since 9 am this morning, it is now 3:15 am, today was a long workday.
I can almost guarantee (almost) that its your rom/kernel combination. Had same problem til I changed.

That will nuke your webtop & fix your problem.
I'm now using faux kernel for CM7 and that hasn't improved anything, in fact I think it it has made it worse. It's getting really irretating because using the watch dog app it always says there is one linux process on every rom I use that is clocking at over 50% cpu usage and It won't let me kill it (probably because it's a linux process), its really annoying me because all I want is my phone to work properly but to enjoy the full rooting experience. I know countless amounts of people with atrix's and they get a full day and a bit out of their phone with heavy usage i can't even manage 10 hours!

Watchdog eats battery like a mthrfckr, get away from that. Install BetterBatterStats instead & look for wakelocks. Which linux process are you noticing with that high cpu usage?
How many hours of screen time do you get in those 10 hrs?
Have you tried with a fastboot wipe & internal storage format prior to installing a new rom? Are you using the latest recommended radio for your phone?

Turn background syncing off if you are using that, and get in the habit of doing manual updates.
Too many times (with ANY Android device) people leave background syncing on and it tries sending/receiving data in a weak signal spot when you don't realize it. That's like a hot knife through butter on a battery.
Leave syncing off permanently if possible! That's a huge improvement right there for anyone...

[Q] What is the best ROM + kernel?

I tried Vigor360, and though I hate Sense, it was.. okay...except battery life was worse than on my Thunderbolt. I've tried flashing different kernels but more problems usually arrise out of the blue and I have NO CLUE which kernels are actually good , good as in they actually male an effort to improve the battery life. I'm currently on a CM9 ROM and holy hell! The keyboard lags and battery life is ATROCIOUS ! I haven't even hardly installed any apps!
I tried Newt's One XXX, v5.1.1 but couldn't stand the minor bugs, but I assume battery life on that ROM is way worse than on Vigor360 (since usually, the higher the version of Sense, the worse it is on the battery) when I had a galaxy Nexus, the picture quality was a joke, but I made it well through the day with it! I'm not getting an extended battery. The phone is thick enough -.-
My current usage is about 7 hours,an hour and a half of screen time, battery is at 7%. I can sort of stand sense 3.6 so long as it isn't theme. What ROM/kernel combo do you guys use to get through the day, or did I make a mistake getting this phone? (No offense)

going to need some things from you:
1. are you s-on or off
2. what firmware are you on
3. do you like sense or aosp more
edit: 7 and 1/2 hours screen time. that is awesome for the REZ. the HD screen is what kills the battery the most. if you can get 7 hours then bravo.
He said he is averaging 7hrs of use with 1.5hrs screen time which is pretty bad. Believe it or not, newts one xxx has probably the best battery life for the rez. I can easily get 14hrs with 3hrs screen time with stock battery. Yesterday I got 17 hrs with 5.5hrs screen time on extended battery. That is probably the best Rom atm and sense 4+ is much more appealing to the eye. All I can say is if you don't like sense, you bought the wrong phone. People will forget about this phone before aosp/aokp is perfected, even though they are making great progress. I can never get any kernels to work right either. Leaving stock kernels is usually best. Wow!! The big reason I have this phone is.. well..
Had a Nexus, broke it and sold it for $75, relative let me use an iPhone 4... I lasted a week before caving and bought a Thunderbolt for $90.
I couldn't stand the ancient android OS and the phone was having random data drops, so I got Verizon to replace it with another thunderbolt. The replacement had the same issue + the vibrate motor decided when and when not to work. The guy on the phone was like "well, since you've had several replacements of this phone, we're gonna see about sending g you a different phone to resolve your issues once and for all, but the phone you receive won't come with a battery cover or battery." I told him I had a battery cover and battery for a Rezound and asked if that could be sent to me, he said "sure, we should be able to do that."
This phone killed my 32GB microSD card :'(
I have S-OFF. I prefer AOSP, but they seem get get home horrendous battery life.

When asking for help you usually shouldn't trash every kernel/rom made available to us by our hard working devs. Also, your theory on the sense number being higher = higher battery usage is way false. Sense 4 & sense 4.1 were actually designed to decrease battery usage and lag so I would stick with one of those. Also, try underclocking your cpu and changing governors.

People will forget about this phone before aosp/aokp is perfected, even though they are making great progress. I can never get any kernels to work right either. Leaving stock kernels is usually best. As with any android phone, you have to work for battery life

People need to stop judging battery life based on screen-on time and hours of use. It varies per person depending on how many accs/apps are syncing. I am tired of all this "better battery" and comparing usage time. If you want more battery, stop syncing on all apps/account. I wish people would stop posting screenshots of their usage. It just means they don't use their phone as much in terms of accs and apps running. Stock rom/kernel best for stability.

It might vary somewhat, but screen-on time and total time are still good yardstick level indicators of battery charge longevity. It's not like when you sync your google account your battery only lasts 1/3 as long - it's maybe a 10% difference, depending on your signal strength, if you're on wifi, etc.

Try reformatting the sd card on your computer via a card reader.
Rage ROM 1.9.1 is a good ROM, nice and smooth. I got about 2 and a half hours of screen on time with that ROM and Snuzzos Funky Kernel. Very nice combination.
If you want to be real fancy you can build a CM10 ROM. There's a guide for it in the Dev section. (Well, the guide is to make CM9, but it's easy to modify the commands to make it build CM10 instead). I get about 3 hours and 15 mins of screen on time on average with the stock battery, no kernel modifications or anything fancy. Brightness is at 25%. I ran it with brightness on 100% for a day and got about 2 hrs and 15 mins of screen on time.

As much as you dislike this method of determining battery life, it is really the only way to gauge battery life on a forum. You are right that it also depends on apps syncing and such but a Rom that can get 12hrs with 3hrs screen time is more battery friendly than a Rom that can do that same12hrs but with 1.5hrs screen on time with the same setup and usage.

How much battery account sync uses is dependent on just how popular you are we have push sync. This isn't Android 1.5 wen're talking about. Push sync uses very little battery.
And sure, I could build a CM10 ROM, but won't it basically be useless cause most things will be broken or barely working?
I've been running it as a daily driver since the 12th. It's surprisingly stable. No random FCs or anything. There are some graphical artifacts while watching streaming video like on YouTube and Project Butter isn't working, but it's still pretty smooth. Bluetooth calling isn't working either, but nor is it on AOSP ICS either. That's pretty much it for problems.

And just to clarify, I'm not.dissing ROM's or developers, in fact, I'm going to admit, I'm a huge Newtoroot fanboy lol. Maybe its cause I've known of him since the Droid Incredible! But I've been running One XxX Rom for about a day now and battery life is still pretty bad, what are some good Sense kernels for battery life?

Try snuzzo's 1.6rc2 kernel with it . I am on ecliptic Rom, but have run Newts and switched to that kernel on both. It's in his funky kernel thread.

how the heck are you guys getting these ridiculous screen on times with the stock battery?? the best ive ever gotten WITH AND EXTENDED BATTERY is like 3hr screen on time and ~13 hours unplugged with countershrikes AOSP and Funky Kernel
and no where near that with my stock battery

I've been wondering that myself lol. I haven't done anything different; same apps, same sync settings, same display brightness, just the ROM + kernel is different. I'm not even undervolted like I was and I'm doing better than before lol... Must be the ROM/stock CM10 kernel I guess.

Better battery life?

i remembered there was a flashable zip to make the battery life better, but I can't seem to find it.
anyways what i've done so far is put the brightness to low, turn off gps , put the animations to .5 , sync emails every 2 hours , only have one widget running , installed the latest faux kernel .
It helped a bit , but nothing too noticeable. Any more things i can do to make it better? any tweaks or anything?
which rom are you usingg?? turn off auto sync, disable check for update.. also your battery can wear out over time, can purchase new battery... most people recommend anker battery,

I'm using juice defender with good success. NRG ROM has pretty good battery life anyway (compared to stock).

i always felt like JuiceDefender killed the battery more than conserving it. Along with everything else thats been stated, I usually use System Tuner to lower the clock speed when the screen is off, helps save battery when idle.

It did not seem to work with my HD2, and I did not use it originally with my Ruby. But now it seems to work fine. I mostly use it to turn off the mobile modem (seems to be my biggest battery drain) except when the screen is off and once per hour to sync my various programs. Using this configuration I can last all day, even with my cheaper replacement batteries.
But nothing is going to make the device go if one is keeping the screen on (like gaming). 3-4 hours max in that setting, and I still carry two spare batteries for those times my son gets his hands on the device.

I don't know what you are talking about but I get crazy good battery life... Here are my stats from 2 days ago I took a screen shot of... And I don't use juice defender and I am using teamvipers sense 4.1 rom and i have around 180 user apps installed on my phone. I just don't use data but my wifi is on all the time (don't have a data plan) and I play temple run and empire defense a lot hence high screen on time. Major thing about the rom I'm using is that it's very efficient when idle. I also keep my capacitative button lights off permanently as I think that also helps my battery life. Only downside is that I don't have working bluetooth in this rom

Well, yours is unique. Most people have pretty poor battery life. I've had 3 Amazes and all of them really drained the battery when the screen was on. However, as I said, my GSM modem is what really drains the device as well. If you live near a cell tower or in a downtown area with good T-Mobile, the modem won't "hunt" and will deliver better life.
Also, the stock battery is the best, in my experience.

I am actually on vacation and using aunt's sim who lives in new York and i live in Wisconsin (Marshfield) and t mobile doesn't exist here literally I am always using at&t signal and I have relatively spotty signals but yes I am not using data as my aunt doesn't have data plan so that also contributes to better battery and I live in a very rural area (there are more cows out here than humans...)

2g doesn't really drain too much battery, but it's still always a good idea to turn data off when you don't need it. The rest depends on the rom you are using but again there is no set number... From what I have read I am an odd ball with the battery life (and am not complaining). I assume you live in karachi? It's not even worth it to pay for 2g...I read somewhere that 3g will finally be rolling out to mobile networks in Pakistan in 2013...but we'll see...

1. Turn down screen brightness, screen kills the battery on the amaze more than anything else
2. Turn off automatic sync, this is very helpful
3. If you're on a JB ROM then turn off google now, this will stretch your battery life significantly.
