People tell me that when I'm on a phone call with them, my voice comes through muffled and crackly. I've also noticed that the callers audio comes through 'too loud' and sounds like I'm using a bad speaker that I've turned up too loud.
It's not so bad that I suspect a hardware defect or something, but it's annoying and I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to improve it.
Thanks.

Have you tried using a different Modem? Theres also a map of what modems work best for the area, look it up and see if you're using that modem... if not, try the modem that others have suggested and see if that fixes your problem.
i'm using uckh7 and that is what is reported as working well in my area.

I feel your pain. I also have the mic issue which causes other other caller to complain about poor audio clarity. I'm running the KH7 modem that others report as being much improved over KK6 - but I can't imagine it being any worse.
There is an option to turn on the other mic to increase call clarity, I believe that it slightly increases battery drain though.
I have this same problem with my phone, and my son has the same with his.
I've used 3 different modems with the same results.
The best thing that seems to work so far is using Doomzday 1.5.1 SE rom. I also use "Voodoo Louder" app.
The problem is at its worse when using wired headphones with mic. I've used 4 different pair with the same result.
I get less complaints with bluetooth. Speakerphone works good as well.

Did you play with noise reduction setting?
Related
I have a strange issue with my microphone or maybe I should call it sound pickup, on my SII.
When I take, or initiate a call, the sound quality of my voice on the other end is terrible, when I use the built in microphone. and I mean LOW ... like it almost sounds like I am not talking into the mike at all...
If I have the wired headset engaged, or a bluetooth one and take, or initiate a call, sound is excellent through the headset. But if I during the call, disconnect the headset, and reconnect it, the sound is also terrible through the headset.
I had my phone for a while running on Lightning 1.2 and sound was great, before sending it in for repairs (battery was faulty). After I got it back, I quickly flashed it to Lightning 4.2 and I can't remember if sound was working before that. I couldn't wait to get Lightning back on instead of the built in crap.
I've tried flashing other roms and kernels, but the problem remains the same.
Any idea's??
I am aware of these threads where people have similar problems, but I haven't heard anyone describe having no problem with the headset, but having a problem when de and reattachiong the headset ... sounds like sw to me. !?!??

have same **** and i search entire forum i heard another ppl have this problem
did u try between ur calls to disable the noise reduction
Hi, yeah I tried disabling noise reduction, and it didn't make any difference. It actually got a little worse, according to my GF but not much.
Can you reproduce that it works fine when using the headset at the beginning of a call?
my problem is that ppl hear in such eco thing and this is crazy everyone say they don't hear me good
Okay. Then I don't think our problems are related.
when I make a call, the earpiece makes a staticy popping noise. I turn the call volume down and it's still somewhat there but I can't help but think there's something wrong with the earpiece. Do this happen to anyone else?
Does it still do it if you uncheck voice privacy in the dialer settings? That would be my only suggestion.
I experience the same thing. I have to lower the volume to make it go away. I tested my earpiece on other phones (touch pro 2 and iphone 4s) and I don't experience the same static even at the highest level. I suspect that the lte is pushing higher frequencies that some headsets cannot handle. I tried different equalizer settings without any changes. I took a higher quality headset and the distortion goes away confirming my theory. I don't think some headsets can handle the full range of frequencies that the lte pushes out. Does anyone know of any mods that will alter the frequency more than the stock settings?
similar problem, but with playing videos... (at least with some of them)

that seems to have done it, will test it further but for right now thank!
having the same problem, constant ticking noise coming from the earpiece speaker when I make a call, and its only on my end. Tried the solutions mentioned above, still got the issue. No problems with bluetooth or using the speaker phone
I'm having the same issues, doesn't seem to happen on every call. But it only happens on my end where I hear the cracking noise. The person on the other end says I sound fine. Does anyone know I can do?
This is an EVO problem

I have the same problem... sometime it sounds ok, then some call sound like crap! Then I started testing it and found that it happens 100% of the time... just on one end of the phone. If you are having this problem, make a call... If it sounds good to you, ask the person on the other end of the phone how you sound! You will see that one of the two people will have bad call quality, making this a problem 100% of the time!
I've been using a Note 2 demo unit for the past two days and have noticed that during a call, and the other person is talking, I can hear a "hiss/white nose" around the voice in the earpiece speaker. But when the person isn't talking, there is no hiss. I tried this with several calls (and also 1-800 recordings) and can hear it for every call. I'm not sure what the cause is, but it is quite distracting.
On the GS3 is does have a slight hiss, but it is hardly noticeable. The Droid DNA doesn't have any hiss during calls.
Since I wasn't sure if it could just be an issue just this Note 2, I stopped by a store on my way home today and tried the Note 2 that was on display. It has the same hiss/white noise that I'm getting on my unit.
Has anyone else noticed this on their phone?
I'm thinking it may have to do with the Note 2 using P_Rev 6 and the EVRC-B Vocoder. In my area, the regular EVRC sounds better than EVRC-B, but I don't see any way of changing it on the Note 2. I've changed between the P_Rev and Vocoders on other phones by doing ##PROGRAM, but that command doesn't work on the Note 2.

I had the same problem on my first Note 2. Took back to Verizon and replacement had the same issue. Was going to get a third one but the CSR tried it out and heard the same thing on the 3rd one so just returned it all together. Awesome phone otherwise but I make a lot of calls in a quite office, and with no other sounds it was really annoying.
Here is another thread with same issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021447
Really hope it is just a bad batch. I'm going to give it a few weeks and try another one.
I have the same issue, for what it's worth. However, I'm lucky enough to almost never use my phone to make phone calls so I can live with it.

I can't wait till some one comes in here and claims they don't have the problem lol. "My device is a special snowflake out of the manufacturing plant that doesn't exhibit this problem at all!"

I've definitely noticed the hissing but honestly haven't noticed it since the first couple days of having the device. Going to pay attention the rest of the week and see if I still have it. I use speaker phone or etymotic ear buds with mic 95% of the time however

I just started noticing it with headphones. Light hiss behind notification sounds, stops just a moment after the sound. Hmph. Not sure how I feel about it. It's pretty distracting.

I have it but don't mind it too much. Probably because it's better than the tinny distortion I had on the Thunderbolt! I've noticed the headphone jack must be better too. Much less hissing when listening to music with headphones...at least compared to the TB. I can't believe I had that TB for so long...so...painful...

Yeah man, same here. I pick it up every once in awhile now and just hold it in my hands and laugh. What a piece of garbage.
First and last HTC device. They're still making twitter posts saying they're still working on ICS for the Thunderbolt............. loooooool
Had a tb too. Held it today. . It's so bricklike in comparison! Not to mention the problems in function. Think I'm over the light hiss now. ..rarely have headphones in and not listening to music anyway so rarely have a chance v to notice it.

Does turning off noise reduction (menu during call) address this problem at all?
Just an update on my previous post. I made a couple somewhat long calls today and I did not hear the background noise on the other end the way I had in the early days of the phone. Either it is simply a sporadic issue or it has worked itself out somehow.

I don't think it's a noise reduction issue. With noise reduction on or off, Voicemail calls sounded perfect. No hiss or anything. And I am quite sure of what the hiss sounds like, so I know what to listen for.
I'm wondering if it's just a case of the person you're talking to having a crap phone that has outgoing issues. It doesn't do it when I call my brother on his Note 2, just some other people. Wierd.

I've also noticed who I call makes a difference in when I hear it, though I've heard it at least once with everyone who I've talked to... Some every time some only randomly... weird.
Definitely flippin annoying when you pay attention to it...

So in the past two weeks since I posted about this, I've tried calling a few people and tested it out, and I hear it on every call.
When the person on the other end is quiet, there is no hiss in the Note 2's earpiece speaker. But when the person talks, you can hear the hiss "surround" each word.
I've also tried it with the noise reduction feature on and off, and it doesn't make any difference.
Hi,
Does it happen when using bluetooth?
Thanks,
Bryan
I hope it is software not hardware. Was thinking about getting a Note II but this flaw would render this phone unusable to me, I use my phone as a phone a lot.
Most of the time it happens during calls. I'll answer the phone and hear a slight high pitched squeal (typically fades into the background to where the phone is still usable) that can become screeching feedback if my hand covers the microphone just right. It's hurt my ear unexpectedly more than once.
Sometimes it will happen even when I'm not in a call.
I've experienced it on Linaro roms running CM9 and I think also CM10.
I installed a sense rom and haven't had the problem since.
Anyone else experiencing this?
This is a really common problem as far as aosp goes. Every phone handles it differently

How unfortunate. I really like AOSP, except this, and this is a dealbreaker. I can't stand listening to squealing every time I answer a call and always fearing getting blasted by loud feedback with the phone near my ear.

I'm not 100% sure about this but there may be a workaround or something if you feel like thread surfing a little bit. My phone has never been quite as extreme so I never really paid attention. Good Luck
Turn your earpiece volume down, that way it won't feed back through.
I get scratchy audio on CM during calls, but never had anything hurt my ear. Do you have any dsp manager or anything boosting the audio volume?
And yes, Sense has a noise canceler built into the dialer that works much better than AOSP, it's one of the tradeoffs atm.

people keep complaining when i'm on speaker phone that they can't really hear me and that the call quality is terrible, even when i have full service and am just sitting at a desk. using the phone normally works, so it's just how i sound to someone else on speakerphone. i'm running cleanrom 4.0.5 and the newest perseus kernel. anyone else with issues like this?

Hi,
Check the small hole next to the headphone jack on top if it is blocked by debris or anything while talking it will effect the sound quality. It is used to help with noise reduction from your end on a call.
Thanks,
Bryan
