So I'm surprised that Cyanogen is the only ROM to date that actually addresses the A2DP audio quality problem with the Vibrant. By default the stock kernels lock in the bitpool setting at 32 when it can be set as high as 54. As a result the 'highs' sound distorted and tinny as if I'm listening to music streaming through RealPlayer circa 1997. Why more people aren't complaining about this is a mystery but there are a lot of people that aren't happy.
To the developers, is this bitpool setting in Bluez something thats rolled into the kernel when compiling or is it something that can be easily changed? Possibly a configuration file? I've googled this issue to death over the last three months hoping for a solution to pop up, I've read up on Bluez but the documentation is poor. Does anyone have more information or can point me in the right direction to solving this myself? Having to wire up my phone every morning for music is driving me nuts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I couldn't agree more man. I am going nuts over the horrible quality. I think it hasn't been addressed as much because not as many people have bluetooth stereo headphones or bluetooth adapters in their cars. Cross your fingers.

Seriously, no one knows anything about the bluetooth stack?
I can't believe that no one has said anything about this being fixed. There has to be a way of manually going into the root directory and adjusting the bitpool information that you're referring to. The tinniness is killing me man!
Weird, but I don't have any sound quality issues over BT.
Couldn't agree more OP. BT is seriously jacked on these. It works, but not like it should quality wise.
Ya, the BT streaming audio doesnt sound nearly as good as wired. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable regarding the subject could chime in, I know Supercurio did a lot of reverse engineering for sound quality, but I dont know if he worked on A2DP
Devs moved it from Development to Q&A... not sure I agree with that as I don't think this is a setting as much as its a fundamental portion of the kernel and needs to be rolled into a released ROM.

I just noticed theses guys seem really close....

Just got my new bt streaming head unit for Xmas and couldn't be more disappointed. I'm having the exact same issue and am also frustrated at the lack of interest in the problem.
I'm not a Dev BY any means, but I can sometimes hack and slash my way through stuff like code. If cm fixed it,and his source is available, I don't understand why more kernel devs aren't including it in their kernels. Do you think if someone like netarchy asked cyanogen what he did for that, the cyanogen guys would share?
I want to do something to fix this for all android devices, but I don't know where to start other than start pming devs and hope they listen.
I'm baffled at how few people notice or care that the bluetooth audio is rubbish on essentially most new android handsets. They're multimedia hubs and can do most everything, and yet the audio doesn't work properly. I'm really discouraged at this point. I've had this handicapped phone for 6 months now hoping someone would fix this eventually but apparently I was naive. I'm tempted to recommission my 2.5 year old G1 to take care of audio duty in my car since modern Android builds aren't up to the task.
I'm gonna be looking into it for my next kernel =] I didnt know this was an issue because I really dont use BT......are you guys wanting to use BT for music? is that what this is? Cause honestly music stream over BT is like rubbing you D with sand paper and saying it feels good (IMHO). BT audio compression reduces the audio quality to much for my taste, but I'll fix it anyways =P
Hey ECOTOX, does the BT audio control function reside in the kernel? Or the ROM? My fwd/back buttons aren't working on my headset.

I know that some cdma devs have figured out how to edit the audio gain in order to remove the hiss however i am a gsm user and no such patch exists. as such my phone exhibits a loud hissing noise whenever there is audio playing. i am on GB leedroid 5.4 with anthrax kernel test 14. can i manually change audio gain! also cdma users can access qpst and adjust volume. i find the lowest audio volume too loud when using earphones after i installed xloud. i want to maintain my loud speaker but redice the earphone volume. how do i edit these values on my evo? thanks
The increased volume from xloud is likely the cause of the hiss. I haven't use that mod of followed its something I can't say for sure. I've been weary of using anything like that for the speaker in cash of it blowing the speaker.
I use volune+ to adjust volume and eq though. It has separate profiles for headphones bs speaker V's bluetooth.

You may also want to flash a ics as sound improvements have been made, when I was stock gb, the hiss was there, now on ics with anthrax kernel I have no hiss

thanks for the replies, i uninstalled xloud and am now using volume+. sound has improved but there is still a hiss. i cannot flash ics despite being s-off and such, they always bootloop for some reason. i am using anthrax kernel so i find this strange
Ics has major sound improvements, gb always had a hissing on music play back, I would suggest looking at solving why you can't install ics, cdma normal from what I understand is hboot version

What ics rom did you try to flash, your hboot is?, you must also flash the new firmware, that alone will cause a bootloop, most developers will have a link for the new firmware
sent on my Evil Evo running the colonel special herbs and spices kernel
i flashed the official ruu then flash the rom on top, all is good until i restored my apps with titanium backup then i get random reboots when the apps load from sd
also i forgot to say that i am using audio technica noise cancelling earphones and the problem only occurs with noise cancellation on, this only happens on my phone and not my pc or ipod touch. otherwise quality is excellent.
Hi .. I have an CDMA Evo 3D with the mic built inside broken/disfunctional. I have to use a headsets to talk on my phone till I get it fix.
Problem is I have BEATs earbud w/o mic that I use with sense rom but it works for talking. When I flash over to JB rom or Sense 4.0/4.1 . When making calls the person won't hear me even with the headsets on..
I'm aware that the headsets doesn't have a Mic but it worked on Sense roms , wondering why would it stop working on JB & and other Roms ?.

How in the world do headphones without a microphone work as a microphone?!?
Some other witchcraft is going on here. Maybe the headphones being plugged in causes the broken microphone to work?
This certainly is strange. How can earphones w/o mic enable you to use a mic that is busted
All beats earphones have built in mic AFAIK. In that case its probably because the sense roms have beats support and the others dont

Makes sense Eminem. So maybe the headphones have a hidden built in microphone that the op didn't see. That does seem to be the only plausible explanation. Or Halloween witchcraft.

I see thanks for finding that out for me . But the question is why wouldn't it work on ASOP roms or JB roms? It does work for me on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640134 which does support beats audio...So I'm guessing what was stated is true, It works for me because the Rom has beats supported, and the others don't now that I think of it.
You could try to install something like Beats Installer from the store or Awesome Beats from this site. They bring Beats to AOSP ROMs (or something like Beats).
Thanks so much for the advice!! I downloaded the installer on Play Store and now it works well with MIUI JB ROM

Glad it worked! Also thanks for posting that it worked so someone who searches can try your solution if they have a similar problem.
Frankly it's poor, call is fine, but the media I get distortion and crackling, I've heard others talk about it, but no one had mentioned a fix. Is anyone aware of a resolution, it's quite aggravating. There was a file I could edit on my captivate back in the day that upped the transmission rate that took care of it. Is there something similar that could be done here?

That's Interesting. I don't have any problems with the bluetooth audio streaming quality. Sure, nothing beats an aux cable quality wise, but it's always sounded pretty good to my ears. I consider myself a little bit of an audiophile too.
I notice it mostly in my car, but I also bought backbeat go ear buds today, and it really just didn't sound right, it's not in your face like holy cow why does his voice sound like that, it's more like crackling in the highs, I don't get it through aux though, I would have thought it was my phone, but I had seen it mentioned a couple other places

alpine type-r interiors and sub, alpine bt head unit, everything is powered by alpine v-power amps, and I gotta say, I hear the distortion pretty clearly over bt. My old inspsire 4G running cm7 sounded AMAZING over bt. I hope someone finds away to bump up the clarity some. devs? Lol
So I think it's safe to say, you like alpine ha ha, but seriously though, thanks for the +1, didn't want people to think I was just crazy or something.

You guys have tried this fix as stated in the General HOX+ Q&A?
Or it is a different issue?
IIRC that was the first mod I flashed for this phone, and while it helped 10 fold with the call quality, it did little to nothing for media and other audio.
i got the answer you're looking for...
i noticed this problem the first time i used my hox+ with my car stereo. same problem...bt calls are ok, but if you are listen to music, you hear ugly distortion in the highs...the sound isn't clear and the stereo image is bad.
after doing some research i found out that it has to do with the bluetooth bitpool settings. but what can you do against it: maxween did a bluetooth fix for me, which worked perfectly. it is implemented in the newest builds of his AOKP roms, and in the newest versions of Liors cm 10.1 roms.
so you can use this fix in every aosp rom.
unfortunently, there isn't a fix for stock-, and sense rom's jet. i've made a demand to mike1986 if he can implent it in his android revolution hd 6.5 rom, but it's not done atm.
so if you want to listen to some fine bt music quality (it sounds awesome in my stereo now btw.), you have to install the actual aokp or cm 10.1 rom...otherwise you have to wait for a sense fix.
ps: we've connected the brandnew htc on from my friend in my car stereo. same issue! looks like htc is doing this intentionally to sell more of the aptx care stereo adapters and beats accessoiries with the aptx codec...
I also have this problem. It annoys the hell out of me because I can ALWAYS hear it. Maybe i'm too sensitive. I don't know. Either way, I'm going to see if the Elegancia ROM can get the fix implemented.
Thanks for letting us know there is a fix.
The only way i have found to lessen the distortion is turn the media volume on the phone down to at least 3/4 and use the vehicle/Home stereo receiver to control the volume increase needed. It helps a lot, but a true fix is really needed
Indeed, and check to see if your receiver or head unit has a secondary volume control for each input. My alpine for instance, allows me to tweak the volumes for each specific input (AUX, HD radio, Bluethooth, CD) from a rang of -5db to +5. IF i set it anything above 0 it sounds like crap. Hope this helps some.
if the connection's fine, you should not have to turn down the volume. the sound quality is even better when the bt output vol is on max on your phone. on the other devices, i would recommend an input of 0db, if you are going above it, you have the risk of digital distortion, and this is sounding really ugly.
i'll post a link from maxween later so if any developer of a sense custom rom could do a fix would it be awesome
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632#c151
here is a thread about this issue, i also found a german page from a guy which used this fix for his htc one and it worked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880298http://
i tried it out on my one x+ but unforunently it didn't work...so if some developer could make this "audio.a2dp.default.so" fix working on the hox+ (sense rom's) it would be awesome...
Thanks for all your research and time mr_breaks. I am hoping we can get a fix for this issue.
Using an aux audio cable is not a big deal but listening through BT is so much easier and allows me to control my music from my car controls. I like that functionality.
same here. i don't like to plug in the cable everytime and the control over my car is much confortable and safer.
btw: with the patch the bt sound is better than with cable
imo... of course it depends on the car unit, but i had very good results with my system and my hox+...

So did you fix it or not? I thought you said you tried fixing the bitrate settings but it didn't work.
If I can change the settings myself, i'd like to try it if you could guide me.
not yet. there is no way to change the bitpool manually, it has to be done in the file called "audio.a2dp.default.so".
i'm waiting for support form the developers, cause i don't have the know-how to do a fix by myself. ..."i would, if i could"

ditto. it worth a few bucks IMO.
As i am sure most of you are aware a lot of D802 users are now receiving kitkat updates. It doesn't seem to matter what version/country this bug is definitely present. Currently you will have to downgade to Jellybean if you can't live with it. I want to gather some info so here we go.
What is this bug.?
A crackling/hissing noise most noticeable in the left ear when using headphones. It isn't present until you actually play something.
How can i reproduce this bug?
Easy plug in some headphones and play some music. When music is playing the noise is most noticeable for me at LOWER volumes below the 50% mark. Easiest way to hear it is play the song even if it's just one second and then pause. For at least 5-10 seconds after pausing it the hissing will continue.
How can we fix it?
It is definitely a software not hardware issue as the noise was not present (or at least not as prominent) in Jellybean roms. I'm not holding my breath for a fix from LG at all so we need to all dig together. For a start if someone is still on Jellybean i would appreciate a copy of your build.prop and /system/etc just so i can have a compare of those between JB and KK. If it's more related to the audio libs then i'm out of my depth!
Update. It seems that the issue is a lot less common when using the LG Quadbeat headphones that came with the phone.
LG UK tweeted a reply to this issue stating that they will pass it on to their R+D department and they will look after us as customers.
Please try and tweet LG in your territory too but please don't spam them.
Please if you don't have this issue on Kitkat can you post what model/variant you have D801/D802 etc...
I can confirm this bug on my Nexus 7 with 4.4.2 when i play music i press pause i can hear crackling couple moments after.
I was just tested my G2 (16gb) with D80220b and i can't hear it (original jb rom was 210e). I tried different volume levels and i can confirm i can't hear it.
Hi,
i was trying to reproduce this issue but i cant hear this kind of bug. or am i deat? xD
my model is D802 32gb
Using your Rom modded =P
EDIT: i try radio FM and no issues
play powerAmp and issues appears
weird.
I've never experienced this. I tried stock Kit Kat (20a), I'm now on CloudyPro II, and there's no noise at all.
I have a D802 16gb.
I'm using Sennheiser earphones, not the original QuadBeat 2.
edit: I'd be the first one to downgrade if the quality got worse on 4.4.2, but fortunately I really don't seem to have this problem. Listened to music for a few hours on KitKat, sound was great.
edit2: I've just checked it again, and I too have the hissing. If I'm not paying too much attention to it, I can't even hear it, so I can live with it, but still...!
I have noticed that the sound is worse or better with different headphones. Are you guys sure it isn't present AT ALL?
Hmm where are all the people with the bug ha ha. There are lots complaining and now this thread is full of people with no issue
Ahh yes make sure you are playing an mp3 and not fm radio!
YES i too have exactly same issue with left channel.
D820 - 32Gb - G Pro2 port ROM by Tangjun.
i once tried OptimusRs G Pro2 rom V3, it was even worse... hissing on both channel.
this problem is not present when i use USB DAC thru OTG
I dont get the audio issue at all, tested with different music files and videos, at a range of volumes. Nothing present at all that should not be there.

But with this mod, the hissing is even more noticeable..
(basically this mod is just 2 files from /system/etc/, media_path.xml and media_path_auxpcm.xml)

I have no hissing on lg headphones too but if I focus, I can hear a sound defect in the left headphone. On my Sennheiser headphones I get massive noise everywhere.
I rolled back to 4.2, couldn't be happier.. everything just works like intended.
Hmm its a real shame though. I may install a cyanogen based ROM once they iron out the few bugs now they have kernel source it should be soon ...

No official downgrade we need to make lg aware of this bug and need a promise to fix it.
For some of us we can't listen to music at all anymore.
