Really pissed with no data or slow to connect! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Okay so this no data or slow data speeds is really pissing me off! I'll try to connect to the internet, and nothing happens. it's loads and loads and no signal is being transmitted out. I have a full 5 bars and the 4 g symbol is there. No yellow lines being transmitted out from the 4 g symbol. This happens whether going on this app, or the internet, or the market app. I will have to wait a good 30 seconds or even a minute before getting a good signal and works. I don't know if this is an att problem or my phone. I already did hard reset. Worked for a day and stopped. Also my bencemark scores dropped. What do I do? I see others are having issues now..?

My international Note doesn't get any signal in Davenport, outside of Orlando for what it's worth. The AT&T coverage map says I should have moderate data and best voice. Luckily I'm only here for the week for baseball and had a T-Mobile sim card handy which, ironically gets at least EDGE whereas the AT&T sim doesn't get anything at all.

Make sure it has an LTE Sim in it. It should be orange and green instead of orange and blue.

not true, the orange and green sim cards are for pre-paid LTE data plans... the orange and blue are for regular post-paid LTE data plans.
Make sure your sim card is orange and blue, or orange blue and white and just has the at&t globe on it, but it shouldn't actually say at&t on it anywhere.

I was having the same issue at my parents house yesterday, all my other phones have always worked fine at their house including my skyrocket.I did a reset this morning and everything is fine so far, if it happens again I'm exchanging my note for a new one.

So as long as my sim card is not orange and green, I should be good?. I read in another post that if I have a orange and blue only, it's wrong. Orange, blue and white is the one I need..

I'm on prepaid.. my SIM is orange and blue..

Do you have a line that is provisioned on AT&T's LTE network? The correct data plan is key I think.

So I checked my sim... it is orange and blue. And the ninth and tenth digit is 25.. So I don't know if its the phone or my sim. Do I gamble replacing the whole phone or just the sim card? Could the sim card work half the time in not work other times?

It DEFINITELY matters. Either go into a store or call customer service and choose the option for data services. make sure you have an LTE plan. If you aren't in an LTE area it will automatically back down to the HSPA+ network. (And make sure you have an LTE SIM. Try to rule out the obvious issues 1st and then go from there.)

I was having the same problems, no data. I noticed that twice it would happen around 35hrs of up time. I am in a non-LTE area. This past Saturday I took it to the at&t store and they put a new Sim card in. So far so good. I'm gong to keep monitoring it throughout the week and see what happens.

Issues with data connectivity

When i first got the Note it had no internet at all. Called AT&T, they said they had "accidentally" removed my unlimited data plan and i now had none. They then put me on a 3 gig plan until they could re-instate unlimited. Now, i get real slow speeds, intermittent connectivity and the signal bars are always greyed out.
On my previous phone the signal bars would turn green when connected to Google's servers, but have not once turned green today.
Thanks. Sweet phone, though!

Not sure, but I think AT&T replaced the green indicators that show an active connection to google's servers with the same grey default ones. Someone can check in the system dump to see for sure.

Both white and black are the same, yes you will get 3G and 4G coverage on at&t since 4G is hspa and at&t supports hspa.
No this phone doesn't have lte and just a heads up, though you will get 4G, it might not be as fast t-mobile from what I've heard, their HSPA isn't that fast but still pretty decent.
I appreciate that.

I used to work for Business End User Care for AT&T. As of the time I left (november), if you placed your sim in a smartphone and used it for about a day the system would add the lowest data plan and send you a text message indicating it had been added to your account. Even if you were using someone's phone while your "feature phone" wad being replaced, it was required. I've had to read that section of the TOS to many, many angry people. I would call and confirm just to be safe.

DO NOT CALL to ask..... as they won't know the answer, and might put a note on your account to force a data plan(well, you could call and ask on someone else's phone without giving your account number)
the primary way (so far that I've seen) that AT&T detects your smartphone is via IMEI. Secondary might be you using >100GB/month, connecting to their 4G APN settings, going to a store for help and letting the customer rep see that you have a smartphone
does AT&T have your IMEI? probably not.... AT&T has IMEI of all of their smartphones, so you can't use an AT&T smartphone. You can try using an (unlocked) t-mobile phone, but might not support the right 3G/4G bands that AT&T use. You can try international phones, canda phones(from Bell, Telus...). WARNING>>>. AT&T might have your IMEI because the manufacture gave them the IMEI(See Google Nexus phones), inference from branded phones that they carry(eg Phone is sold/branded by AT&T and t-mobile... AT&T gets a list of their phone IMEIs that might include t-mobile's IMEIs), screwups(Samsung Note overseas was misentered as a tablet on AT&T's network, white i9100 Galaxy SII is misentered as a Blackberry on AT&T's network)
The link at the end of this post gives a guide to what phones are 100% compatible(3G/4G on 850/1900) on AT&T's network.
According to this, the T-Mobile Amaze 4G is compatible with AT&T 3G/4G, but I have some confusion on the 850/1900 mhz band for the 3G/4G data, trying to sort it out(last few posts on that thread)

Straight Talk is the way to go, I have been using them for about 2 months (still have Verizon but wanted the Note). Straight Talk is unlimited everything (45 a month) and I have had no issues in WA State. I am running my note off the AT&T sim on their BYOD program and most custom Roms have me at HSPA+ or 3G depending on my location. My download speed has averaged out at 2.83 Mbps but certain locations like Seattle I pull 6.35 Mbps consistently, I have had bursts as high as 10 Mbps in various locations. I leave my Wifi on and when I am not flashing Roms like I am on Crack I store free Wifi everywhere I go so I am connected to AT&T hot spots and other Wifi that is free. I was very concerned coming from my Razr Maxx where I was getting 36 Mbps consistently but after 2 months I probably will not renew any of my other contracts with providers, this just works well and I buy to many phones. Some more answers to this question below.
My speed has never been capped but I have read online in various forums that Straight Talk drops you to 3G after 2Gb of HSPA+ use, but my speeds are consistent and I check everyday waiting to see if they will cap me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525371
So is there a straight talk store? Or do I have to order it online?
You order the sim card online ~$14. Then buy a refill card ~Target, Walmart.
Straight talk.com or what? And is there a store locally I can get the SIM card from?

No have to order online straight talk.com.
But I've been getting really slow speeds from them the last two months...they throttled me the first month on my atrix 2 and after that super slow(speed test.net app won't even work).
I think I'm gonna unlock and flash the blaze radio and use T-Mobile.

Straight Talk works very well for most people. I did receive a call from them my first month saying that I was using too much data right after I hit the 2 gig limit.
As others have said, the sim card is only available online, however they are getting ready to start a pilot program to allow them to be purchased in Walmart stores.
Another option might be T- Mobile. Walmart has a plan for $30 that gives you 100 minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited 3g data(up to 5 gigs). You just have to flash a tmobile modem to have access to the 3g/4g

On straight talk you'll get at&t's marketing version of 4G which is really HSPA+ or slightly faster 3G. The only way to get the LTE is to be on an actual at&t plan and live in an LTE area.
My average speeds are anywhere from 2 to 6.5 Mbps where I live.

One piece of advice if you're contemplating going with Straight Talk. CS sucks, most users have come to a conclusion that under 100MB/day and 2GB/mo is the going rate. Go over any of the above, depending on the population on your general location, even under those numbers, if you're in the top 5% of users, they will throttle you, once throttled, you'd have to FB them or call their CS and be prepared to wait, one good thing is that I've read on howardforum that you'll get either a voice or text warning you of excessive use. If you continue to use excessively, you will not get any more warning, ST will shuts you off and lose your phone number. I've been using their service for about 2 months now and as long as we play by their rules, $45.00 + tax a month is pretty good. My download in Honolulu is a steady 3MPS and 900kbps uploads + or -, give a few. One other thing is prepaid, you have to refill before you run out, there's no grace period, best thing is AUTO REFILL.

Perhaps it's best to wait for T-Mobile note release and see if we get a more stable modem firmware out of it. Blaze modem is not the most stable one. I mean it is the most stable T-Mobile modem (for me) as far as tmobile modems for the note go, but it works best in weak signal areas, has poor connectivity in high signal area (weird, I know) and drains battery a lot faster even on wifi.
I wish I didn't have to order the SIM card online that's the only part that sucks.

Two AT&T notes side by side (west Chicago land)... one with a new Straight Talk SIM the other with contract AT&T LTE sim....
The ST note got just over 5 meg (4G) and the AT&T LTE note's Speedtest.net wouldn't complete :crying: unless the ST note was idle then it got just over 6 meg (LTE)
I'll have to see if the ST Note gets throttled.

[Q] Droid Incredible 4G GSM question

I'll try and keep this from turning into a book.
Basically I have a HTC Thunderbolt right now. It is being replaced under the extended warranty that I have with Verizon. Since they don't have any more T-bolts they are sending me a HTC Incredible 4G under my total equipment protection policy.
I have already ordered a Nexus 4 (being delivered Monday) and will be going to T-Mobile with that eventually bringing my wife over as well when her contract is up. The only reason I did the warranty claim was because my T-bolt was dead and I might as well get a free phone out of them before dropping them since my contract is up and such. That way rather than have a 1.5 year old dead T-bolt that is good for nothing but the trash, I would have a functioning phone which I could sell. Make sense so far?
So my initial thought was that I would sell the phone take the cash to recoup some of my cost of the N4 or use it toward buying my wife's new phone on the T-Mobile network. Then I saw something about the Incredible 4G being compatible with a GSM network and that if I modify the APN that I might be able to get it on T-Mobile with HSPA+. If that is the case I will just keep the phone and have a brand new phone for free for my wife rather than sell this one and buy a different one. When they ship out the new phone it will come with a Verizon SIM that I can use to get it on their network, my account is still active with them so I can call them and get and try and get an unlock code if I need one of those before I cancel my account and I can get any updates that may be out there for the phone.
Of course if this won't work I would rather sell the phone as basically a new phone, well it might be a refurb but I don't know that for sure because they said they had to send me a complete kit because I don't have a battery and battery cover that would fit since I have a T-bolt now. Though they may have complete phones as refurbs.
So if it will work, what will I need to do before I cancel my plan? Though there was that new law that went into effect the other day that makes it illegal to unlock a phone.. But if I let Verizon do it I would imagine it isn't an issue.

I tried that. Here goes some different steps I took:
I started with cyyanogen last nightly build.
Tried switching all the different settings in the hidden men u (gsm, CDMA only prl) etc. Changed the bands from automatic to to aus2. No good except auto and USA. 2g
Did this on viper and got the options 800mhz and 1900 MHz. No good on 1900. 800mhz 2g. (E)
Used the very alpha miui ROM from the general section and got two different radio strength bars. One was 1x and the one above it (weird right) was 3g. Had signal on the 1x but couldn't use the phone right away. Had no service on the 3g (although it started out with 3bars and slowly went to 0 and stayed) changed the APN to tfdata. Got phone but no data. Had to put the phone back onto gsm only to get data. Which gavee just the one signal bar.

not in this case, you said you were not using your phone in stock, theres a bug where the 3g symbol got changed to g for gsm users, i read about it, statusbar theming on htc devices caused the h symbol to be swaped to g symbol, sorry about not being clear on last post
No. The g is definitely 1g. 5-15 KB a sec. All the symbols work I think because when I had Verizon on the same rom it showed the 1x, 3g, lte, icons, depending upon where I was. Usually lte or 3g. I'm going to get some go phone sims in a week or whenever they come in. The sim cards are cheap so I can change them out no prob. I just have ran out of $350 a month for phone service. I can almost deal with it Cuz its slow but very stout signal. Never dropped a download yet. I just don't like having to set up all my DL to run while I sleep. I'm used to lte ya dig!

Hi all
any way to put 850 band on htc incredible 4g?
i only see 800 - 1900 and japan bands 800 - 2000
You have to use a difderent sim card. There are people on here who know what oones tp get but they dont really like to. AT&T is supposed to work. Im not sure. You cannot put another frequency antenna on this phone without taking it apart and using a soldering iron. (Good luck!)

you are arguing with a very experienced person here. him and i both know a thing or two about phones and i must say, if he's sure its a bug, then it is. I am inclined to believe him too because we all know that HTC programmed this phone for a specific service initially, and they were not counting on it ever going outside the VZW network. That being said, there is no way for the phone to tell what network its on. Case and point... i just manually flashed my phone to the MetroPCS PRL and it still says Verizon Wireless... The network speed i get will not be shown as LTE even though i have it, because it only ever used GSM for LTE(which is partially GSM-based technology), not voice and data. So, on the stock rom, the phone is and will be "confused". CM10.1 works great and DOES know the difference. You will have best results by being s-off as i am.

[Q] Unlocked my AT&T One, Popped in T-Mobile sim.... no data...

I'm getting text, but no data otherwise it seems. Nothing in web browser, etc. I see a 4G logo. My network info says:
Operator Name: T-Mobile
Mobile Network Type: UMTS
Service state: In service
Is it the mobile network type that is wrong? How do I change it?
EDIT: Seems like maybe I have to set the APN? Are these correct? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236735
Yes, when switching carriers you will need to manually add the APN if the SIM card didn't automatically do it for you.
I don't have T-Mobile, but that looks good to me.

Thanks! Everything seems to be working swimmingly. Speedtest is even faster than on my Nexus 4 on T-Mobile, interesting!

So are you on EDGE or HSPS+? If you're on HSPS+ what APN you entered?
I'm considering going on T Mobile with my AT&T One but when I insert my girlfriend SIM card it seems I'm always stuck on EDGE

He is likely in a T-Mobile refarmed area so 1900 MHz UMTS is available, while your area doesn't have this.
Go to http://airportal.de to get an (unofficial) view of where this is available.

I'm on HSPA+. I was pulling 12 down on speedtest. The settings I used are in the first link of the OP. Very nice...

I've pulled 25 mbps on t mobile on my nexus 4. T mobile has fantastic hspa+ speeds in high signal areas.

I'm not sure what happened, but now I can only get edge... all night. I've soft reset and still stuck on Edge. Perhaps I was picking up 1900 at work? Everywhere else is Edge. Ugh.
im on Brooklyn new York and i want to know if im gonna be able to use an at&t htc one on tmobile hspa+ network

Yeah, that's probably what happened. If you don't get it, then you don't. It does look like they keep adding new area though.

I have posted above a link for a map where you can get a feel of whether you have refarmed T-Mobile towers in your area.

What about calling T-Mobile and asking?

The final answer is yes. The AT&T HTC One and the international/developer edition are exactly the same. Both support the frequencies used by T-Mobile. However, if you're not in a refarmed area listed here, then you won't be getting HSPA+. You'll get calls, text, MMS, but restricted to 2G as far as data goes until your towers are refarmed.
There are alot of threads on this topic in this forum as well as on the international/developer forums supporting this.
I had been getting speeds well over 20mbps on my Nexus 4... cracked the screen this weekend and connected an unlocked HTC One, from AT&T. I'm getting 5mbps now. I changed the settings as the OP did.
I am wondering if the speed reduction is due to the new phone, or because I recently switched from a "Unlimited" (with 5gigs of unlimited data) contract plan to a truly unlimited month-to-month "uncarrier" plan.
I made the change on Monday or so of last week, and within 24-48 hours was having poor/limited reception in my home and nearby, in my town, which I previously NEVER had issues in.
@OP- How did you go about getting yours unlocked? I'm trying to unlock mine to make it more valuable on craigslist and AT&T said that someone will get back to me by the 9th, which won't work for me.
