First off I take ZERO credit for this but after stumbling upon this on XDA today in another thread I searched high and dry and couldn't find a post about it specifically so I figured I'd post it here.
I know everyone is going bananas over the Beats thing recently and while it seems to be more an EQ than anything else I can tell you supercurio (who deserves the credit) made a nice gem for us.
For those in the know, Samsung screwed us S2 guys dropping the Wolfson chip for the Yamaha chip and it seems now Voodoo is available for the S2
I'm big into home audio (esp. headphones). I've tested so far on my ear buds (Denon AH-C560R) but most importantly my higher caliber headphones (Sennheiser HD600 and Denon AH-D7000) and this upgrade to the entire driver not only gives the headphones a higher volume output but also adds some "oomph"
It certainly has limitations as a phone compared to my other sources but it's a substantial improvement in not only sound quality but also volume.
There's NO distortion or clipping that I've noticed yet. I'm playing notorious culprit type tracks for that (hard trance/rap). Everything is a joy with this.
Once again kudos to supercurio for this and everyone else enjoy. Lastly, you NEED TO BE ROOT for this to work.
I'm running it on a custom ROM no problem (UnNamed)

EDIT: Author states $1.35 but you'd see it right in the app when you go to use it.
Sounds great, but only works with wired headsets. I do most of my music via BT. Also, would be nice if he listed what the app will cost after install. Didn't see any mention of price.

No it wont. Its only wired headsets.
I use louder, but all it is is a dB booster. I don't feel like its really makes any noticeable difference in the sound quality.

It's better than Volume+ in that you don't get distortion or clipping at high volume levels. That's the beauty of this program. I've been playing with a lot of higher-end headphone as I've mentioned above and there is a difference when switching to this audio driver.
It's certainly no high-end source (the S2) but it makes it more tolerable of a device than without it.
Just bought it, and it sounds great!

Cool but the description of this app is clear... no sound improvements just more db's.
Equalizer makes my music way way louder already and sound better too for free. I can't imagine it even louder.
As far as sound quality at high volumes, I have sennheiser ie7's and it sounds perfect, no distortion or clipping. Maybe equalizer app helps idk

Ah bummer. Although the sound through the dock isn't that bad
Purchased and tested- doesn't improve quality of sound, just overall decibels. Great for headphones, not necessary if you're using an amplifier.
Great find, could even help the hard of hearing...
just downloaded it, I like the added volume but I wasn't able to use the +6db (due to a bit of bass distortion) with my powerbeats listening to Drake. The +4db sounds amazing though, will definitely like the added volume while in the gym. Good recommendation!

I use it along with Player Pro and it sounds great.
yep, it did make a legitimate increase in volume. makes me love me S4 Reference's even more

I also agree with VinceG. If you really want some good sound, you should consider a portable Amp/DAC and some good headphones.
Are you sure it the bass that's making that music sound awful? But yea, power amp is really good. Also a good pair of over the ear headphones will help a lot.

If this APP would work..
I purchased these headphones when my old in ears died that I had used for over 2 years, and they came with a app that let you control the sound to your liking.
[link to headphones: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...adphones+and+Accessories-_-Klipsch-_-26779026 ]
[link to app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.outsidesource.klipschcontrol&hl=en ]
You might try the app with your current buds. It might be what your looking for. I would uninstall any apps that affect sound you have installed.

Actually, yes.
I have a pair of Sennheiser HD600's which are over the ear 'studio' headphones, when I bought them, they were priced at $600 and were the second best set sold by Sennheiser (the best set went for $2500). Currently, the HD600 set is now the third best set, beat out by the HD610's.
All of that to say, I have a pair of Sennheiser earbuds that perform nearly as well as the HD600's (again, priced currently in the mid $550 range), but the earbuds are priced at I believe $450 retail (the ie80s).
If you have a tendency to loose earbuds however, the $450 set is a bad choice. Buy a cheap set and learn to keep control of them before you make that kind of investment.
You get what you pay for. Buy cheap, you get cheap. Sennheiser headphones (the higher end ones in particular) not only have the capability of putting out the bass, they are well balanced, not overly bass'y' just to be 'cool'. You get a very accurate sound reproduction out of them and I recommend them highly.
Earbuds do not put out the bass by them self, they use your ear canal as a bass reflex hole. You need to be careful when using earbuds for this very reason, they seal your ear canal and use the pressure created by the sealing to create some pretty impressive bass.
IE-80s ($450)
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/in-ear-earbuds-headphones-ie-80_504771
IE-60s ($250)
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/earbud-headphones-ie-60-in-ear-sound-fashion_504769
adidas CX 310 Originals ($100)
http://www.sennheiserusa.com/earbuds-headphones-stereo-noise-cancelling_504688
The IE-80s can have the amount of bass adjusted in each earpiece by using a small screwdriver and the headphone wire is replaceable. One last thing, you need to allow around 15-30 hours of usage time with these before you make a final decision to keep them. This means, use them for 15-30 hours because they begin to sound even better than when you first take them out of the box.
I recommend getting higher quality earbuds or headphones and use Poweramp.
I currently use Poweramp coupled with either the Astro A*stars (earbuds w/control), Beats Tour (earbuds w/controltalk) and Beats Solo (overear w/controltalk).
Best all around sound with the A*stars though, boomier eye cavity vibrating resonance with the Beats (both).
And yes if that's not enough and as someone else mentioned early... might wanna get an external amp DAC.

My current set up is with Fiio E11 portal amp and the Ultimate Ears Triplefi 10. I'm currently hunting for a circumaural full size can to maximize the E11's capabilities. The TF10 is so easily driven by the Note's build-in DAC. I can barely notice significant difference with and without E11.
Please post your setup.

From personal experience, the Note gets plenty loud with TF10. I listen most times with volume under 30%. I think most/if not all of the current generation of the Galaxy line use the bulid-in Yamaha DAC. However, I'm not sure if the 3G Note has the same DAC as the LTE Note. According this article they have different impedance. The LTE being higher.
Technical aspects aside Samsung could've done a better job at shielding the components from electronic interference as the hiss between songs are definitely noticeable.
I have only used the TF10 with the Note so far.
Overall sound quality: the highs are clear, mids are warm, and the bass is tight but not overpowering. E11's bass equalizer significantly improves bass.
I can't wait to get some full size ones to see what difference they can make.
i have the same experience with the Tf10. i have a fiio e6, and don't feel that i need it with the note. i used it more often on my zune hd than the note

It's not making a huge difference yet. I'm planning go get the Beyerdynamic DT770 pro 80 ohms version. That might be more fitted to be driven by the E11.

I dont actually have one but a friend of mine does, the Fiio e17, he also has the e11.
I had the opportunity to compare the two and the e17 is significantly better.
The problem of course is the e17 is more than three times the price at $210 on Amazon as compared to $65 for the e11.
A couple of major differences, the e17 also has usb and spdif line in's as well as a standard 3.5 line in.
Rather than having 'presets' for the EQ as seen on the e11, the e17 has individual bass and treble adjustments.
The e17 has a digital display which makes adjustments a bit easier to make.
One negative is the battery life supposedly is alot less on the e17 at only 15 hours (the e11 I think is around 80ish according to the specs page). Altho I dont know specifically because my friends has never been drained completely, he charges it every night.
Of course, the sound comparison is pretty stark. Tested with Sennheiser HD600 studio headphones (retails for $550-$600), the mids and lows are significantly better on the e17. More punchy and tight sounding, less 'rumbly' or 'muddy'.
Ironically, the highs are a almost the same although I did notice a bit more (almost hard to tell) stereo separation. I dont know exactly how this is possible but it is.
The source material ranged from some Bass 305, Boston Pops (Telarc), country folk (including Jewel - 'Hands' cd and Carrie Underwoods first cd), and one specific track off the Eagles live album (the track was Hotel California which has a surprising amount of fidelity, alot of punchy lows and mids and exceptional highs in the acoustic guitars).

I bought them when they first came out over ten years ago. They at the time were the highest end headphones Sennheiser had until they decided to release the outrageously priced $1500 pair and I believe the 610s which are now the defacto $600 set (the 600s are now I think $570ish).
I cant possibly see a huge difference between the 600s and the 650s so I havent been all that inclined to upgrade them. Im a studio musician and high quality headphones with an amp that can drive them is important to me. However, Im certainly not going to use my cell phone / mp3 player with $600 headphones so buying an amp to plug my phone into and my headphones into the amp seems a bit...silly (besides the fact that Im going to look like a tard with studio headphones plugged into an amp that is also plugged into my phone). The size of the Note is already enough to make me look a bit goofy...
But yes, look around, the MSRP is generally much more expensive than what you can find if you poke around.
I picked up a pair of Hd 280 Pros at BB for 79.99 best money spent. Was looking at Beats and these seemed a lot better for the buck.
Line Out for i717
Keep in mind that there are a few docks out there that seem to give you access to a LINE OUT.

I can't post links yet. If you do a google image search for Samsung-EDD-D1E1BEGSTA you'll be able to see that back which is where the line out is.
Anyone knows how to get USB hosting working for ICS leaks? http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24614
This will be awesome for Fiio E7 E17 that have build in DAC and Amp to run off the mini USB of the Note for superior sound quality.
I see no need for a hardware eq, I use power amp and the soft eq is actually quite good.
Been thinking of getting a good set of AKG cans and would like some suggestions and options on them.
I'm currently using a set of dre studios with a Bluetooth stereo gateway and there's no real sound difference either way that I can hear.

Works great thru my Grado SR60i,s, using only the stock set up.
No Power Amp or any other EQ.
For portable use I recommend AKG k550. It's expensive but well worth it. The Denon D2000 and D5000 are on clearance. They are hard to find but probably the best sound quality at that price range.
The USB hosting function would be a huge improvement to the Note's audio quality because you can plug in DAC/amp combs like the Fiio e17 to play music out of it instead of the Note's inferior build-in DAC.

so... one of the main reasons i got this phone is for the beats... while it is shiipping i would love to know if there is any chance a few questions could be answered.
does beats only work on/get full richness from beats head/earphones?
how do you know if it is working?
does beats also affect speaker quality?
and if the first question is correct, is this because of the beats audio engine is already installed, or is there another reason?
any helpful answers will be met with a thanks i guess

I can't speak for the full richness of beats head/earphones, because I have only ever used my cheap $9 ones or the AUX jack in my car.
I asked myself the same question "How do i know it's working," when you plug in an AUX Jack, A small red b (circled) will show up in the notifications bar. What i did was plugged my headphones/car stereo system into my phone, and played some music and turned beats audio on, then off again and i did notice a nice difference in the sound. (See attached Picture)
You can tell if it is working my turning that option in the notification bar on/off and noticing the difference.
Speaker quality is not effected by Beats unfortunately, but the speaker itself is loud and great

If you really want some good SQ, and have high bitrate (320kbps+) or flac/other lossless formats, download neutron music player...by far the best SQ I've heard out of a cellphone when paired with the dedicated headphone amp. I turn the beats dsp off and set this up and its great. Currently using westone 4's and etymotic er4p. Never tried over the ears, I prefer in ear. I do use the beats dsp when playing slacker radio. It does muddy up the mids a slight bit, but seems to me to pick up both ends of the spectrum and bring the soundstage just a bit more forward.

Not sure, I've never tried them. I also have a pair of Shure SE215's, which are single driver. Obviously not going to be as good as the turbines driver, but I seem to prefer multiple armature in-ears versus single. I feel like the details are a bit better seperated, yet still blended well.

PLEASE do research into different headphones before jumping into the "fashion headphones" like beats. klipsch headphones are okay depending on what you get i would recommend like sennhiser .... audiotechnica ...V-moda .... koss what exactly are you looking for ? a bass heavy headphone ? or something that has more of a audiophile approach or just some random 19.99 headphones ?

something with really clear and crisp sound. the bass doesnt need to be explosive XD but i do like to be able to hear a backgroung track and percussion as much as the vocals (i'm a drummer ) and yes you could definitely call me an audiophile lol
So guys, basically, just share your speaker EQ settings with us, this is mine, it's the most enjoyable sound I managed to get out of these speakers :good:
These settings are for there ONBOARD SPEAKERS, I'm pretty sure they will suck with anything else, don't use these with anything else.
No EQ at all.. Not needed on the N10..
I use awesomebeats over in the app forum. Really improves the sound. Dont use any eq settings except bass boost on headphones

The speaker are better than those in pretty much any other tablet but if you come from a Touchpad you'll want to improve it as much as you can.

Oh I know. I didn't come from a touchpad but remember I do have a N7.. Tegra DAC = Muddy uninspired dull crap.. The only time I use it for audio is in the car when I can run it through my head units EQ. The Wolfson DAC in the N10 is worth the price of admission alone. I was spoiled by it in the Nexus S for over two years. I just don't feel the audio needs any help and leave the EQs and magic elixirs at the door and let the music playback naturally.
So weird there is a similar thread on the N7 forum about the audio and the best thing to use for audio. I posted a similar post there..

The DAC is really great, but it doesn't help much when you have small speakers with a flat EQ by default, try these, you won't be dissapointed (only for the speakers, don't use these settings for the headphones).:good:

Ohhh.. I see. I misunderstood... You're strictly speaking of the onboard speakers only. Gotcha. Sorry I misunderstood. I'll give the settings a try then.. You are right the default speaker output is flat. I don't use onboard speakers often but I'll look into it just to have ready for the times I do though. I've generally been weary of EQ and such with small speakers.. Always afraid even the smallest amount of bass will blow them

Yeah it makes weird sounds when you boost the 250 band too much, I left it way below the weird sound level as that scared me too, it can't play the lower frequencies at all so I doubt those will affect it though.
Having decided to keep my N3 even tho I'm not bowled over by the audio, I'd like to reach out and ask which earphones you guys use, and rate highly? I'm in the UK
Thanks.
What's your budget and what do you look for in a pair of them? Quality over sound or vice versa. What type of music genres? Etc... do you want more bass or more average or more vocals to pop out?

try something from Denon or Audio Technica!
I use the stock buds at work as they allow me to listen in on conversations of colleagues (meaning I can hear them when they try talking to me). If I want good sound away from home, I use a shure 215 se. There are pricier options, but for 100€ it's really great sound. At home I use a sennheiser MD 598 if I really want to have it like the musicians inteted their songs. But the sennheisers are open back and so sound gets out and my family is annoyed by that if they wantto watch TV. So I bought the Yamaha Pr 500. they are closed backs and almost don't leak sound, even if I use my Fiio alpen to crank it up. The Yamaha is a little tinted to the lower frequency side, but it sounds awesome to hear all the bass lines. And with EQ you van tweak the sound to your liking. But what I found is, that any over the ear headphones with big drivers really gives a much better sound stage. When using my big cans I almost always get back to live tracks over studio recordings, because it sounds as if you were standing in front of the stage. I recently had to thin out my music collection on SD card to make space for higher quality recordings. Now the minimum I use is 160 kbps and I have tracks up to 320. and the difference is amazing.
Sorry for this rather long post, but I hope you can get something out of it.
Check out Headfi

Agree. Headfi.org is great if you research audio stuff.
Another vote for head fi. Watch your wallet though. The headphone out on the Note 3 is very good. A high quality headphone is worth it. Personally I use a Vmoda m100 most of the time. It's a fantastic headphone if you like your bass. I also have a pair of Audiotechnica A900s which still sound amazing after 5 years since I purchased it. For ultimate portability I use Sennheiser IE8s which still blow me away with their bass and soundstage.
Good luck with your search. There are lots of good choices.

I'm using the Sennheiser Adidas MX 685 as my put-in-pocket pair of earphones. They sound great, are water-proof, and don't fall out of your ears! You can get them in multiple form factors.

Discovered JVC HA-S500 through HeadFi. I loved them so much I now own three pair so the wife and kids can use. They are import only from Japan.

The output from the N3 is extremely good. If you're not feeling that then either you're using dodgy earphones or poor quality source material. Well recorded 24/96 audio through my Shure E3C earphones sounds pretty amazing.
Really can believe no one has recommended Etymotic. I picked up a set of these
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000XP8DJC
And I am as happy as I can be with them. You can't beat it for under $100 IMO. I plan on investing in their ER-4s based on my experience with how impressed I am with the hf4. I never thought I would be paying as much for a set of headphones as I would a phone....

Firstly thanks for the replies everyone. I wasn't receiving post updates.
I listen to Led Zeppelin a lot. Rock music. Like to hear the bass too and mid range .
I think I'm more inclined to use in ear buds, so shall look through the thread and check recommended types.
Thanks all
I picked up a pair of Bose IE2 a few days ago and blown away with audio quality and comfort. Kinda pricey but well worth it.

Thanks ill have a look. I'm just used to those silly shaped in ears that came with my old iPhone 5 - I imagine Bose would be better than those!?

Yes, definitely. These come with different size buds and stabilizers depending on your ear size. I don't even know I'm wearing these when working out for long periods of time. They have another version with volume controls and mic for $30 more.
Returned for a refund the Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 bluetooth headset because the buds were uncomfortable and popped out during movement.

You can use over the ear headphones with the N3 but I wouldn't recommend it. I tried my Sennheiser HD650s plugged into the N3 and they sounded okay but not great, problem is the N3 doesn't really have enough power to drive them. Through a headphone amp or external DAC they should be fine, I tried the N3->HLLY SMK-III DAC->Sennheiser HD650 and that sounded awesome.
