Hi,
All the while, My 16GB HP Touchpad has no wireless connection problem be it from CM7 to CM9 till i went to eidt prop.build build no on CM9 Alpha2 to allow Chrome beta for android to work.
Evensince that..sometimes, wireless will not join existing predefined network no matter how many times i tried to Enable/Disable toggling the wireless setting.
Reboot will help but time consuming.
Trying out my luck..I went to \system folder and Mount it as R/W (default is R/O)with rootExplorer..Immediately..the wireless automatically joining the network without long wait of authentication..
This quick fix is consistent.. every time I do the mount to R/W on\system..the wifi automatically joining . Wifi go mad refused to connect on some long sleep occasions..
Dont know why..but it works that way.
have you tried turning off Wifi, Turn On Flight Mode?
after that Turn off Flight mode, then turn on wifi..

Can not get it to work with above mentioned method..I have kept \system as R/W and never see network not joining problem again.
how exactly do you mount /system folder as R/W?

Running A2...
If I keep wifi on during sleep, it seems to be able to join known wifi networks at home and at work. Downside is it seems to drain battery much faster, especially if there's no known wifi in range(?).
If I keep Wifi option to "on during sleep only when plugged in", it doesn't re-join or scan for known networks at home and at work.
The "restart wifi" trick works for me at home, but doesn't work at work. Quite a pita. Therefore I'm looking for a good solution. Thanks!
HP TouchPad with CM ROM ,default is rooted. Just use any File Manger with root access.
I am using RootExplorer to do the job, free version will do the job as well. Go download from Google Market /Play
With file manager
1) Browse to \system\
2) You should see default , the folder with permission of R/O (Read Only).
3) RootExplorer ,provide permission change..you can click on the " Mount R/W" .
4) After above steps, go to wireless setting to OFF wifi and ON again..
5) After step-4, you should see the wireless joining the Router easily.
had same issue.
I just changed my router's wifi broadcast radio channel from 11 to 1. No android editing required. my HP Touch with CM9 now automatically joins my 24GHz home wifi.
I had this issue only with 2.4GHz wifi networks. 5GHz network were not an issue. I have a dualband router, so that's how I know the 5GHz band was not an issue.

Super kudos, I had the same problem as everyone here and the Root Explorer R/W fix didn't work for me; neither did doing a reboot of my router/releasing the IP. And restarting my TouchPad/booting into WebOS connecting and rebooting only worked 40% of the time.
For anyone who needs help with this:
For a D-link router I went to http://192.168.0.1/, signed in.
Then Setup >> Wireless Settings >> Manual Wireless Connection Setup (Last button on the page for me)
Uncheck "Enable Auto Channel Scan" then from the drop down select "2.412 CH 1."
This will vary from D-link models/firmware and especially between router of other brands. If you are curious or need help, Google your router/model for its IP address and read over my little guide, it shouldn't differ too much, you're pretty much looking for a setting to change the channel, nuff said.

Hey. My phone arrived today and so did the problems.
I have a wireless router(Asus W530G-V2). The internet runs great on my PC
Just before I went to school I could see my Wireless Network's name but I couldn't connect to it. It simply said Connecting... over and over again. The interned didn't work. Now I got home and and I can't even find the network. If I manually add it it's out of range.
Can someone help me?
Thanks.
edit: once in a while i get a weak connection (tp-link_b22866) that also doesn't work.
lol. check if ur asus router supports wireless internet. does it have an antenna or something?
Yes, it does. My sister used the wireless to use internet on her laptop.
It's possible that you could have entered the wrong password the first time, that would result in the connecting loop you mentioned, as for it not being visible I'm not sure why that would happen unless the SSID of the router is being masked, an idea might be to go to maccas and test your phone using the wifi there maybe? If nothing else connecting to another network would help us diagnose the problem.
I did a factory reset but still, the phone wouldn't see any network.
I'll try adding a wireless card to my PC and see if it receives any signal from the router.
If not, I gotta set up the router somehow.
Thanks.
check if ur router is compatible with the dd-wrt custom firmware. if its compatible flash it on ur router, it will solve all the problems.
or
try this
Small utility that allows you to adjust the transmitter power of WiFi, thus can be great help to save battery life.
Has been done 5 hard dimmer. The apartment is missing 4 or 11 dBm for normal operation. Battery consumption with this sometimes falls on the 60-100 mA.
Nope, dd-wrt is not supported
And I can't install the apk since I don't have internet access therefore I don't have Astro File Manager.
ok try this.
find out ssid broadcast name of ur router from ur sisters laptop.
ask her if its password protected. if yes, get it from her somehow.
then on ur phone do this,
Settings>Wireless & network settings> Wi-Fi settings
turn on the wifi
and select add Wi-Fi network
enter the ssid name in there.
if needed enter that damn password and save it.
voila!
I've tried that but below the network name it says "Out of range".
And my sister ain't here. I don't know if it's my phone that isn't receiving the wireless signal or if it's the router which isn't sending. I'll go later today in a place with hotspot.
Images of the router's settings. maybe there's something wrong here:
http://imgur.com/iJu8n&6TIsH&rkcJk&rKvub
maybe ur sister needs all the bandwidth and blocked ur phones mac id on the router lol
I said above that my sister isn't here now. It's only me so no one is using the wireless.
From what I can see there it's possible that the security on the network could be set to filter MAC addresses, I'm not sure if that is the problem, however at this point I'm not sure what else it could be...
Nah, it's not that.
I've messed around with it(to accepts the phone's MAC, disabled) but still won't work.
I'll go to a mall or somewhere to see if the phone's the culprit here.
Went to the local library and wifi worked smoothly. I've downloaded all the apps I needed(especially Astro file manager). So the router was the problem from the beginning.
Thanks anyway.
Well I'm glad it's not your phone that's the problem, hope you like your 01 and that you get your router working.
Hi,
can you check on which wifi channel your router sends. On my P500 I also don`t see a wifi network above channel 11.
By the way I`d like to know how to enable these channels with my Cyanogen 7.0.2 beta 6.5. I know that there must be some possibilities..

Is anyone else experiencing the wifi settings to crash? My wifi works fine for a few minutes but suddenly I lose signal and when I go to wireless and network settings, it crashes and I am out of signal. Anyone know of a solution for this?
Thanks!
Have you tried Regpon?
Also, I've had success with this simple task:
In Wi-Fi settings, "forget" the router you're trying to connect to. Then shut off Wi-Fi.
Wait 10 seconds or so then turn Wi-Fi back on.
I found this workaround when searching for Wi-Fi problems on this board. No problems, now. If you get a FC for Settings, select "wait" until you've successfully gotten the settings to "forget" the connection and until you've got Wi-Fi shut down.

I tried this but still continues =/
In my case I tried to "forget" the WIFI password setting to access to the router, and restart your touchpad, and when finished booting the WIFI is back to normal then
The only inconvenient thing is you have to "forget" the password every time you shutdown or restart your touchpad.....
I think the reason for this wifi problem is that wifi's channel cannot be set up normal, I have seen it in my advanced setting of wifi, there are only three channels available for me to choose, which are 11 12 and 14.......
Also make sure you have your date, time and time zone set in settings.
Whenever I get home, my phone always seems to default to a BT Openzone wifi, which one of the neighbours obviously has set up on their router. The problem being, that my SGS2 always decides to connect to this, rather my own wifi. Whether it's because it picks this signal up first, as might be stronger when driving in to area, I don't know. But the point is, that I never asked it to connect to this ssid...
I will then go to wifi settings, and choose "Forget this network", and then it connects to my ssid... However, I don't want it to automatically connect to open wifi's.
Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing to tell it not to connect to open wifi networks automatically? Happens every time I come home. Try connecting, cannot connect, and then realise it's conected to the openzone open wifi... Forget it, and it works. Go out, come home, openzone, forget, works. etc etc...
Using the checkrom revo hd 3.1.1, in case it's a setting that's been set up on that rom?! Had a look, but couldn't see anything
Hopefully someone can please please help

Just a suggestion:
There is an option in Settings menu => Wireless and network => WLAN settings => network notification.
Have you already tried to change this setting?
There is also an advanced menu in WLAN settings - just click menu button => advanced.
In advanced WLAN settings, you can set to use a static IP address.
If you enter an IP address for your private WLAN, then you can prevent to be connected with an open wifi dynamically.
It is not very elegant, as you have to switch this setting, if you want to receive an IP address dynamically again, for example in other WLANs.
So, it is just a workaround - not a solution.
Maybe you can find an app in the Market to save different WLAN configurations/connections and which allows you the disabling to connect to other (non-saved) WLANs.
But I have not search for such an app yet.
Good luck !
Thanks for the suggestion...
Setting a static IP is not really an option, as I'm often between different networks...
Have tried disabling the "automatically notify open wifi" setting, and will see tonight... Hopefully this will work Hadn't thought of that affecting it, but it might just...
If not, anyone else who has any further suggestions are wholly welcome

As wifi settings are mainly hosted in the kernel, you may flash a different kernel (compatible with your ROM !).
Please wipe cache partition (and Dalvik cache) in recovery mode after flashing.
Good luck !
Does your home network by any chance have a hidden SSID?
Another idea might be to look at the wifi-configfile. IIRC, it is saved in /data/wifi/bcmsomething.conf.
If you do not find it, I can check for the correct name tonight.
My phone does not and never did autoconnect to open networks (I am using CheckROM Revo HD since the first version, now at 4). Can you select the open network in wifi settings, hold long and choose to delete settings for it?
I'm having the same issue and think it is because I have the vodafone app installed, do you have that installed too?

I have a YP-G70 (galaxy player 5.0), international version. It came with gingerbread 2.3.5, and it was unable to find the adhoc network I've set up in my laptop.
Then I flashed it with rumirand's custom kernel r13 and Meticulus's Foreigner ROM R5.1 (GB 2.3.6), and the problem was still there.
Then I replaced the wpa_supplicant file with the one mentioned in these posts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22268045&postcount=60
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438334
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377321
(the file that is mentioned is always the same)
Now it detects the adhoc network, but when I connect to it, the wifi status starts looping: connecting -> disconnected -> scanning -> connecting -> disconnected -> ...
Did I miss anything?
Has anyone managed to get adhoc to work on YP-G70 using one of the custom ROMs based on 2.3.6?
Or do I really need to go back to 2.3.5 and use the wpa_supplicant file mentioned above?
Thank you
I have played with some of these wpa_supplicant files recently. The result seems to be hit and miss.
So far I tried connecting to 2 different usb wifi dongo using ad hoc mode. The only successful one is the ad hoc connection to a tp-link wifi dongo using wep mode. This dongo doesn't support wpa.
The other one that failed is a linksys dual band dongo, I can't get a connection with either wep or wpa. The observation is very similar to yours.
Need to try a few other device to see what's wrong or whether it is due to incompatibilities.
By the way, I also tried all the possible security options (open, wep, wpa). Same behavior for all of them, except that the "connecting" step took much longer when using wpa.
Interesting note on incompatibilities. My laptop's wi-fi card is an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG.
I found out that it ends up connecting successfully if I just leave it looping for a while... sometimes it will succeed on the first few attempts, sometimes it takes several minutes.
So far, it only worked in open or WEP. Never got it to work in WPA.
DHCP
Have you tried to use a fixed ip instead of dhcp ?
Yes, that's how I've always had it set up. I don't think there is a way to use dhcp in ad hoc.
Today, I've switched to the Chip v1.5 custom firmware and I just can't get ad-hoc to work at all. No ad-hoc networks are displayed in the wifi settings.
I've tried replacing the wpa_supplicant file with different versions of that file, but it just rendered the wifi completely unfunctional: I turn it on, it goes "scanning...", then it turns itself off automatically after a few seconds. I had to reinstall the firmware in order to get the wifi to work again.
I would really appreciate some help, as I completely rely on an ad-hoc connection to obtain internet access on my SGP when I'm at home. I don't feel like going back to the firmware I was using before, having seen how great this one is.
So you have used static ip? And set it up correctly? Because the wifi connect and disconnect problem is frequent with belkin routers, and is fixed by using static ip usually.
Sent from my YP-G1 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, the IP settings are correct, and I'm using a static IP. I eventually got used to the looping that I mentioned in a post above, and I've lived with that for the past 8 months.
However, as I said in my previous post, I've installed the Chip v1.5 firmware, and now my problem is somewhat different.

if you had this happening, it meant the wpa_supplicant you'd tried wasn't compatible with your device. Always backup wpa_supplicant before replacing in in case the new one doesn't work.
Try this wpa_supplicant, it works with my 5.0.
I had the same problem with Ad-hoc networks using windows7 (ie obtaining ip address loop) - I gave up in the end, but found this : Windows 7 as a WAP. It does the same thing, only it's not an ad-hoc network - you can also share wifi internet through the same wifi adapter...it works great for me!

Thanks. I've been playing with that wpa_supplicant for a while now. However, it did not solve the problem.
It detects the ad-hoc network that I set up on my laptop, but I'm having a hard time trying to connect to it. So far, I've only been able to connect twice. What I need to do in order to connect successfully is to keep enabling and disabling wi-fi. Each time I enable it, it will automatically attempt to connect to the ad-hoc network (because it remembers the info). Most of the time, it will say "Connected", but it actually isn't connected. It only succeeds like once every 50 attempts. And even if it succeeds, it will disconnect automatically after like 10 seconds. At least it gave me enough time to test the internet connectivity, which worked fine during those few seconds. Changing the encryption type from WEP to WPA only made things worse.

That seems like a great idea. However, my laptop's wireless adapter (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG) does not support that functionality. An adapter with Windows 7 certified drivers is required. I also tried to use Connectify, but it also does not support this adapter.

that's very strange. This wpa_supplicant works on my GP 5.0 very well. It detects my WEP ad-hoc network and connects to it just fine and keeps connection until i disconnect. Sometimes it won't connect right away, in which case i just turn wi-fi off and then on again and then it finds the connection, connects and then everything's fine.

Agghh that's a shame.... you could try buying a wifi dongle.. they're not all that expensive...
After playing a bit with the network adapter settings on the laptop, I am now able to connect successfully to the ad-hoc network as soon as I enable wi-fi. What I did was changing the property "Ad Hoc Channel 802.11b/g" to 1 (it was 11 before). Setting this property to anything other than 1 makes it not be able to connect.
There is still the issue of automatically disconnecting after a while (which can vary from seconds to minutes), but it doesn't happen very often, and I'm usually able to stay connected for a long time. Playing with the network adapter properties didn't seem to help in this regard. Anyway, I guess that the problem is solved.
It should be noted that I've never had to change the network adapter settings for any anything else before. I've always been able to connect to other computers via an ad-hoc network. I also used to be able to connect with my SGP 5.0 when I had a different ROM installed. The looping problem that I had before (see my early posts in this thread) could probably be solved also by changing that property in the adapter.

The properties for the network adapter are listed there, and you should be able to change them.

Hmmm yes, I looked there but unfortunately there is no option to change or configure the channel at all!
I suppose it's driver dependent.
I'm part of an FTC robotics team, and our control system uses WiFi Direct with 2 phones to communicate between the robot's phone and the driver station phone. We often have issues with the connection dropping out during matches at the big competitions, do to a ton of other teams all using WiFi Direct at the same time and crowding up the 2.4 GHz band. (At the bigger events, there are over 1,000 devices using 2.4Ghz!!!) Is there any way to force WIFI Direct to use the 5 Ghz band on the Galaxy S5 (or Nexus 5)?

A year late, but here is the answer for other people.
Androids WiFi Direct will work in 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz, but for new groups, it apparently defaults to 2.4Ghz, unless you are already connected to a 5Ghz AP.
So repeat for both phones:
Stop the FTC apps (Press the Multi-Task button and then hit the X on the FTC apps)
Settings - WiFi -> Advanced -> WiFi Direct
Press and hold on all the Wifi Direct Connections and Groups on both phones. Tell them to Disconnect and/or Forget.
Now use the WiFi settings to connect both phones to a 5Ghz Access Point.
Redo the WiFi Direct pairing process (The FTC 4 app will seek out its similarly named *-RC automatically if you start both apps).
