Hi,
I've had my xperia S for a couple of days now and I did not notice a change in brightness depending on the ambient light. I've checked in the screen section under setting and there is no option for auto-brightness unlike my previous android phone (Nexus 1). Does the Xperia S have an auto-brightness option?
Moreover, I'm used to using the pattern lock on my previous phone. With the Xperia S, when I enable the pattern security feature, I am also presented with the normal screen lock (lock/mute). Is there a way to disable that screen?
Thank you in advance

If I am not mistaken no SE phone has auto-brightness, reason is nowhere to be found....
The same for the lock screen, most probably the ingenuity of the SE/S engineers stopped after creating Timescape...

That is too bad, I really like the auto-brightness feature on phone. It helps improve the battery life.

What about widgets? Check them (there was something like Power Widget, or Power Control, can't remember), or you could use external aplication. I think Extended Controls or Free Power Widget got something like that. It is not in Display Settings anymore.
UPDATE:
Power Control (It has Wi-Fi, BT, GPS, Sync and Brightness buttons) Brightness should have 3 settings: Max, auto and minimum.

I do use widgets to control the brightness manually (power widgets & beautiful widgets). Both control brightness and power widget even has an auto-brightness check box that has no effect what so ever.

if you want to control brightness easy way try this app:

Woah, wait a minute. No auto-brightness? That can't be. The specs sure indicate there is ambient light sensor. There is indeed no "auto-brightness" box to check off, unlike with other Android devices, but I thought that this new Xperia series is supposed to work like iOS devices do. In other words, you move the slider to determine the *average* brightness of the screen, just the way an iphone or ipad does. The screen gets brighter in with more ambient light and dimmer in darkness, but the average brightness is controlled by the slider.
Most other Android devices use the slider to determine a "fixed" brightness, not an average dynamic brightness.
Are you sure the brightness doesn't change?? I find that hard to believe with an ambient light sensor on board.
The white paper says there is an ambient light sensor.
I just checked the user guide installed on my XPS. It mentioned about light sensor and brightness adjustment.

I know it has a sensor, but I could not see a difference. Even when I cover the sensor with my thumb, I could not see the same change in brightness as I am accustomed too on my nexus one.

I did not imply that there is no light sensor, just that I couldn't find the auto brighness check box and couldn't notice the change in brightness.

Thanks a lot! I've checked it and my light sensor works. The change in value seems minimal though. I will play around with the brightness slider to see if I notice it now.
Thanks again!

Can you shed any light so to speak on the auto-brightness feature? There seems to be conflicting reports as to whether the screen becomes brighter outside while dimming in a darkened room. The specs indicate that there is a light sensor, but some reported that it doesn't work or that it is barely noticeable. What are you thoughts?

Yes, it does work, and noticeably so. However, the transition is slow so as not to cause the fast bright/dim/bright shifting. It takes about 5 seconds to slowly shift from bright to dark, etc.
By default, the brightness is a fixed 50% in the settings. However, this can be switched to the auto brightness using the backlight toggle widget.
Wow. That's a relief to hear. What happens to the slider when the auto-brightness in the widget is enabled? Does the slider then gray out? If you attempt to move the slider, does the auto-brightness on the widget disable itself then?
Somewhere I read that the slider works like iOS devices do in that when you move the slider, you are raising or lowering the *average* brightness and not setting a specific, static brightness as you do on other Android devices. Thanks...

You can move the slider, and it does indeed seem to specify the "average" brightness.

Thanks for your review. I agree about the speaker, it's stupid on the back and I usually hate that many manufacturers place it there, but the only other devices I've seen with speaker not on the back is Blackberrys and LG Optimus 2X (not sure if others LGs too).
The soon to be released Xperia P has the speaker on the right side and that's one of the features (along with Aluminum unibody) that makes me doubt if getting the Xperia S or the Xperia P (or simply wait for other options...)

Video size will depend on compression and also video length. Which are you referring to? A long video which pushes past 1GB or a well encoded one?
Personally, I've just watched a Bluray rip of Watchmen on the S and it worked great. I connected it to my home LCD TV as well and it was smooth.
Not quite sure which lags you are talking about, but it's fast. For SMS I use ChompSMS anyway.

I'm on MiniCM7 v.2.2.1 nAa kernel 13.
I have installed UB v.1.4 and set "Auto Brigtness" on Settings-->Display.
When I'm on street, ok...display bright well, but when I'm at home, the brightness is too low ... and I can not see it well.
How do I fix this? What should I set? I have set
CyanogenMod settings -> Display -> Automatic Backlight -->"filter sensor" active (first entry) and nothing else ...
Where do I change the light level at least?

If the screen has little brightness in low light and have installed KeyBoard Fix, uninstall KeyBoard Fix, and you can use the automatic brightness without any problem.
i just installed it on my x10 mini (miniCM7 2.2.1) and it's not working for me, i open the app and it says it's on, but nothing happens, the light stays the same, what could it be?

I'm using this rom now and it works perfectly. Follow the steps and if you want to see if it works properly activate it and go to the street and check it, then disable it and see the change.
When activated if the program does not need ultra brightness did not use.
NOTE: I am not the developer of this app, I just share it for the users who have problems with the brightness on Xperia P.

Lux - The Original Android Auto-Brightness App
FREE OR FULL
- Since I bought the Xperia P I noticed that the battery life is a bit worse than Xperia X10 (my previous phone) and the screen was too bright for me (thats due the White Magic technology), even on 0%. So I started searching for some apps that can control the brightness very well but none of them worked as I expected to. One day I found this good app, installed it and the battery life got better also the screen got darker. I recommend this app to every Xperia P user. Here is some info about this app:
Lux isn't your ordinary brightness app. It intelligently adjusts the brightness of your display based on the environment you're in. If, for example, you step into a dimly lit room, Lux will automatically lower the brightness of your display to make it not only comfortable to read, but to also preserve battery power.
Lux provides the option to automatically adjust the backlight at fixed intervals (periodic mode), when a change in environment is detected (dynamic mode), or when the phone wakes from sleep. It's also possible to adjust the backlight manually. Simply disable automatic mode and you can use it like a traditional brightness tool!
Perhaps the best thing about Lux is that you can teach it how to behave. If the backlight is too bright or dim for your liking, simply open the provided Dashboard, adjust the brightness slider to the level you desire, then hold the link button. Lux will use this new 'link' as a reference in future.
Give it a go! I want you to test Lux for more than the 15 minute refund period offered by Google. I understand that some devices may not have the best quality light sensor, and that you may need more time to play around with settings. If you find that Lux doesn't suit you after the 15 minutes is up, you can request a refund at any time via e-mail - no questions asked.

Description:
With Active Display your device can turn on when new notifications arrive and display that information to you on the screen. There is no need to turn your device on every time you hear that distinctive notification sound. Your notifications are right where you need them without all the clutter and free from other distractions. If your device has a proximity sensor, which most touch screen phones have, you are in luck. Active Display will not turn on if it detects something close to this sensor. So if you have your phone stashed away in your pocket or bag, don't worry, it won't turn the display on and waste your battery. And as an added bonus we've included an option to turn on pocket mode. When this is enabled active display will turn on your screen and display your current notifications instantly, provided you have any pending notifications.
Instantly turns the device screen on and displays notifications as they arrive
Up to 8 notifications displayed in a horizontal strip that can be viewed by touching the notification icon
Short notification description can be displayed around the outside of the center ring
Touch the center ring notification to view the full notification
Unlock the device, open the app for the current notification or dismiss the current notification
Set a re-display time to have active display remind you of your pending notifications
Adjustable brightness level for when active display turns the screen on
Pocket mode which allows active display to turn on once you remove the device from your pocket or bag

would be amazing if we can make this the default lock screen? so even with no notifications active display is still our lock screen?

ChaOS already has...
Should be able to pick it for PAC pretty easily. I use it, the only "annoying" part is the screen turns on whenever there is light changes - so it might turn on more than expected. But waving your hand over the phone and having it wake to show the date/time is pretty sweet
Would there be any way to use this with a notification blacklist? Like if I don't want all of my BBM notifications constantly lighting up my phone...
How battery consuming this feature is??
Any one who is using this feature??

Adds a configurable Energy Ring around the camera lens indicating current Battery level. Dive into the various configuration options, not only you can quickly glance and get the battery info but, Energy Ring adds an accent to your phone's camera lens.
Got a full charge? The Ring will be a 360 degree wrap around the front camera lens.
Battery depleting? So will the arc of Energy Ring.
Out of the box features:-
✓ Energy Ring can be configured from a width of 1 pixel to a donut thick ring
✓ Energy Ring puts almost 0% load on CPU, as it wakes up only to reflect any change in battery level
✓ Energy Ring's direction can be configured as clockwise/bidirectional/anti-clockwise
✓ Energy Ring can hide on fullscreen content (apps, videos, images, games etc)
✓ Energy Ring can be configured to change colors automatically depending on the live battery level
✓ Energy Ring could have a mono color/multiple color segments/gradient (pro)
✓ You can literally assign any color in the world for your favorite configuration
✓ Energy Ring has a number of cool animations whenever a power source is plugged into your device
All that is cool! But what about Energy Ring consuming Battery?!
This is one of the most exciting question for me to answer. Energy Ring more than anything understands that you need to utilize your battery efficiently (after all, that's why you installed the App, right? .) Energy Ring sits on the screen silently putting almost 0% load on CPU, if battery level changes, Android wakes up Energy Ring. Once awake, Energy Ring quickly updates itself and goes back to sleep. And to be that extra efficient, the Ring goes on deep sleep when you turn off the screen, meaning it doesn't even read changes in battery level when the screen is off.
Notification Access requirement:
Energy Ring does not read any Notification whatsoever, it merely relies on it to be alive. Be assured that the App does NOT access anything.

I have just installed it and I did not encounter that issue. I had Google Play Store open, moved the phone to landscape and back and the ring moved with the whole app but bounced back to the camera punchhole.
My question is, what about the display burning in? I know that it only works when the screen is on but this question might fall from other and this is why I have asked.

Since, the phone's screen is likely to be off the majority of time, would like to avoid any potential unforeseeable issue with screen burn-ins. So yes, wouldn't like to add such a feature for now.

Hi! Please refer to the notes added to the bottom of App's listing on Play Store in specific.
Another suggestion - can you make little 12 6 3 9 ticks on the Ring Origin so its easier to get the 12 position. It's minor but might be a nice touch to have these ticks for reference.
Is it possible it only make it show up when charging and not all the time?? Thank you.
