Hi all,
Was just wondering if it's worth me swapping my iPad 2 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1?
I've had a quick (really quick) play around on the 10.1, but the screen doesn't seem very responsive and smooth compared to the iPad 2.
I'm in no way at all an Apple fan boy, I much prefer Android as an operating system which is why I have an HTC Sensation, but I'm in 2 minds what to do.
Can the 10.1 be tweaked to actually respond to the stylus I use with my iPad 2?

Yes, you should swap the iPad for the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I have been enjoying mine since I got and have had no issues it is really smooth, in fact it feel smoother than the iPad. It is a great devices and with android and not being locked up like iOS it makes it even better!

From a truly non-biased point of view, I think the best answer is "it's up to you alone to decide".
What do you currently use your tablet for? What would you like to use it for in the future? Considering you're active here, I'm guessing there's a chance you'll want to root and ROM your Tab, are you waiting on the iPad2 jailbreak? Is that critical to you?
When I got my Tab I knew I was going to root and ROM from the start, I already had a jailbroken iPhone and wanted to see what all the fuss was about with Android. I consider myself a power user and I enjoyed exploring the nooks and crannies of the iPhone on my own, with my Tab most of it was documented somewhere.
I mainly use my Tab for reading techincal ebooks during my commute, and for reading my RSS and browsing when I'm too lazy to get out of bed. I didn't like the iPad's portrait interface which just looked like a blown up iPhone's. I was doing research on one at work and the more I used it, the more niggles I found I had with the way it treated me like a basic user. The fact I wasn't planning to game too much (if at all) was another reason I leaned towards my Tab.
As my sig shows, I liked Android so much I stuck around and got the GNex too.
P.S. My Tab has the oil slick problem. It's annoying to know my gear is technically faulty, but I can honestly not see the issue while the backlight is on.
The screen size really suited my and so did the weight for the tab 10.1
It really is up to you, but to be honest, you don't know the tab's full capabilities yet as it's not got an official ICS build yet!
i dont want to hijack this thread but i have a very small question so creating a new thread would be totally waste.
1)can any one tell me about availability of games on galaxy tab 10.1 compared to ipad2??
2) will Cm9 officially support Tab10.1??
3) can i play 720p mkv videos with softsubs without any problem?? My MKVs are generally H.264+AC3/AAC. I dont care if i have to buy a player to do it.
I am really confused between ipad2 and galaxy tab 10.1. HAve to buy any one of two.

Yes, indeed I was waiting for the iPad 2 jailbreak, but it looks like they've hit another hurdle,so I'm not holding my breath no more!
I do like the games on the iPad 2, some of them are fantastic, but Android seem to be lacking in the game department area.
They only have the following tablet apps listed on the android website:-

The camera on the iPad 2 is shocking, it's not even worth having one on there,not in low light conditions anyway.
Still in 2 minds what to do. I have android on my HTC Sensation, so do I need it on a tablet too.....

1) Games exist and run on both devices, sometimes the same game is on both iOS and Android, sometimes they are device specific. Don't really know what you're asking?
2) Yes, and there's a preview version available on the Tab 10.1 Dev forum right now, I have it installed.
3) Yes, I think so. Although I'm not entirely certain as I don't watch videos too much on mine, unless they're Youtube embedded in a webpage/RSS. There's something for the GNex out now though, that I have a memory someone saying they were running it on their SGT10.1 too. And I'm not 100% sure about subs tbh.

(Note how I say optimised, not compatiable - if you're on Android 3.2 or later, there's a difference as they included a feature to expand phone apps to take up the whole screen).
The link you provided is the "Featured Tablet Apps" list, but I do feel there is less tablet-specific apps available for Android compared to iOS. However, the ones I need for my daily use exist, so that fact isn't such an issue to me. And it's hopefully only going to get better as devs move to the GNex and develop on a SDK that encourages phone and tablet interfaces to be designed and used in a single app download.
I don't use my camera on my Tab, so can't help you there...sorry.

I am in the market for a new 7" android tablet. My motivation for getting one is so that I can read PDFs on the go. I am a student and being able to read stuff on the go is a huge plus to me and my phone's 4.3 inch screen, be that it is huge real estate for a phone, is just too small for reading.
Why specifically 7 inch? Well, when I discussed with friends, I learned that 7 inch tablets are much lighter and easier to carry around. Plus they are easier to pull out off your bag and read on a cramped bus, and given that I go to college the university shuttle is *very* cramped. Plus they are cheaper. So, there it is. I am hunting for a good 7 inch tablet.
I have two options in mind right now. (A) Amazon kindle fire. It is dirt cheap and does the job, i.e. read PDFs. Cons, it is a very basic tablet and is very underpowered. It has other drawbacks, such as no SD card slot, no out of the box market support and it runs Gingerbread. Eww. (B) Samsung galaxy tab 7.0 plus. It is great, nice and everything and it is Honeycomb and is well powered.
I want to choose a Tablet that has an unlocked bootloader, has the least hardware/software issues and glitches and that has a vibrant dev community. So, people please suggest a tablet in this vein!

I read about the Galaxy Tab 7.7 inch. Man, I hate to buy a Galaxy Tab 7.0 at the cusp of the release of the 7.7... It is such a ***** to buy a piece of tech, just to see it get outdated in a week or a month!
I hate all these companies releasing gadgets soo quickly!

Does anyone know the purported price of the 7.7" one? If it is too costly, I'll close my eyes and pick the 7.0". Else, I may have to wait!

Guys, I just learned that the Galaxy Tab 7.0 plus has some issues:
1. Something called SOD (sleep of Death) 2. Some WiFi troubles.
I tried asking the people in the Galaxy Tab 8.9 forum about issues it has. I didn't get a reply yet.
I have a few queries though. Compared to a 7 inch tablet, how less portable is a 8.9 inch one? Is it just as portable that I should be able to pull it out in a crowded bus and read a PDF file on it just fine?
Secondly, the 8.9 does NOT have a SD card slot. Now, that is a downer. No way to freely expand memory.
BUT: The Galaxy 8.9 has ICS/CM9 ROMs!!! That alone can sway me towards Galaxy Tab 8.9. Granted the 7.0 plus may get ICS too, but looks like it hardly has any ROMs at all. And there was one thread there asking whether devs are looking into coding for it and the reply was the devs may wait till official ICS is out, since it is a PITA to dev without proper drivers available. Hmm...

Well, I am not planning at Transformer prime level monies! As I said in the OP, I am planning to get a 7-8 inch tablet for the portability.

Well, I don't have a lot of experience with any of them except the xoom. I've owned one for almost a year now. It's a bit larger than what you're looking for but when it comes to custom roms, mods, or what have you, there's plenty to choose from. The bootloader can be unlocked so there's already a bunch of ICS roms available for it (CM9 included). Plus a pretty good selection of custom kernels to choose from. I'm not sure about the Xyboard. Is it un-lockable? Don't know. Whatever you buy, do your homework. If you can't unlock it, I'd pass. Unless you don't care about changing things.
Custom roms will get you things like support for external USB drives, keyboards, mice and what have you. Perhaps they are coming with support for those things built in now. I don't know. They are things worth having though. IMHO.

Do you find your Xoom portable? I.e. is it easy to take out in the bus to read? Seems like this is my standard portability test!
Is it too heavy or can you easily hold it in your hand and read stuff on it?
EDIT: So, now I have the choice of the Xoom, Tab 7.0 plus and 8.9!!! Damn it. I started with 7.0 plus and now the list has grown to 3!
I'll just go to Best buy and try all three of them and see which I like best. Plus the best bang for the buck factor too...
Well, I have a friend who has a Kindle Fire and, well, to tell you the truth, I don't see mine being any harder to get out of the bag than that thing. It's something though that I can't really say is right for you or not. For me, if the money isn't an issue, I'd go for more screen real-estate any time. They aren't THAT big. Just my thoughts on it. You might feel differently.
What about the Acer tablets?
I know the Acer Iconia 100 is on the way out but I'm sure there will be something to replace its 7" form factor. I've been looking at the Acer Iconia 200 - WiFi only, SD card slot, 8 or 16GB memory. good prices (sub $400 for the 200). Micro USB and full size USB host. Most of the reviews have been pretty positive that I have seen. And the 200 has ICS now.

Money range from you in OP is NOT stated...sooooo I will assume the best.
Size I'm sure is an issue, and you want more portability...sooooo just go buy one dude, they alp have return policies, and who knows...usually gut feeling is wrong, and the other choice is right.
Right now the GT looks and operates bad ass, you are asking for opinions don't forget.

I was going to tell you about the galaxy tab before I even see your choices. I had the 10.1 before, and I have to say that Samsung have the best devices ever. Go for the Tab definetly
Hello everyone!
I will soon (well, not really that soon, but in the future i guess) need to develop an Android app for a university class i will be attending. I'm really interesting in the mobile world and Android looks like a great platform/OS, pretty open and customizable.
Since i do not own any Android device i think i will buy one soon, not only because of the class but also because i want to learn and explore Google's mobile OS. I know i can develop and try the app using the emulator but since the app will be using wireless features i'd like to test it on a physical device.
Keep in mind that i know nearly nothing about Android development; here's the question: what are the hardware limits of installing and testing apps?
I'll explain it a bit better. Since i don't want to spend too much money on the Android phone i'll buy, i was thinking to buy a chinese phone running Gingerbread (2.3.6 or later to be more precise). So my question is: can i test my developed apps potentially on any type of Android phone, with any type of hardware specs, (let's say mid-range device) even if it is not from a famous brand?
P.S. : i'm perfectly aware that very cheap (and also good, why not) phones are available even from famous brands (like Samsung, LG maybe HTC too and so on), but my question is the above and i kindly ask you not to point out the thing i mentioned in this P.S.. Many Thanks to all!
There might be some issues using chinese phones, that might or might not happen on other devices. (Some apps just don't want to work on my Ainol Novo7 Elf for example)
My best bet for you would be to buy an "old" phone from Samsung or HTC.
If you would give us an aproximate price range, we may be able to help you better-ish

This is exactly what i want to understand. If we forget about the chinese phone for a moment; how is app compatibility determined? Are there requirements or something else?
In other words, why shouldn't an app (i'm not talking about heavy 3D games, of course) run on a random Android device (which have all working features and stuff, like for example a random Android-based Samsung phone has)?

now I am currently in front of a big decision (its big for me yeah), but I think there are many people thinking about this.. Let's get to the point. I want to buy a new phone (I am deciding between latest devices on the market). Personally I don't think it is all about purchasing the best phone for you and that is it. Therefore I think the question should be something like: 'What brand I want to buy?' rather then what phone I want to buy. What do you think about this? Is it like that?
Here I am referring to things like smart TV mirroring, branded accessories, NFC accessories etc.
Android brands are becoming more conservative.
Personally I think the Nexus 4 is the best phone on the market, but then when i think about their accessories and things you can connect it to I am quite conscious. I know Samsung probably has the largest basis but its not android anymore, I love stock android. I hate rooting.
So what would be a possibility to eg. mirror a screen on N4 to some smart or normal LCD TV?
Is it the platform that makes a market now?
Does it make a sense to buy a nexus device?

Ok so the reason for my post... i am looking to purchase a tablet & a new cellphone this week. I love to 'tinker' with things... always have, started with computers (windows) and got decent at developing windows desktop applications in visual studio, learned basic php, web design etc. Now i want to get a basic understanding of the inner-workings of tablets/cellphones running android... eventually start developing apps to go along with my websites i build online (social network type stuff) & eventually im hoping to actually get into custom rom development/feature hacks etc way down the line...if i end up having a knack for it
Alright...main question....if you had a fairly small budget (see paragraph below) and wanted to purchase both a tablet & a cellphone... for the sole purpose of "messing with them"... testing out lot's of different rom's.. figuring out how they work internally... testing out your own custom apps (i dont play mobile games at all...so dont factor that in the specs), and ill be using the tablet to login my pc from work with teamviewer etc. With all that said...which ones would you buy? Obviously I guess i am looking for the tablets and phones that have the most amount of "options" available.. easiest to take apart, find things, hack etc. as in (software/function wise). And preferrably the ones that have the most amount of "actual people/developers" working on them..involved with them... aka "fans of the phones/tablets". You know the ones that have active communities of people i can interact with... along my journey of non-desktop disovery...aka... figuring out this mobile/tablet/wifi/cellphone/android thaang
Oh ya, my budget...super weak... i can't spend more than like $200 or less per-device... i do have a cell contract with verizon (my samsung stratosphere just died, also it had 'hella-limited' dev support) so i might be able to 'upgrade' to a more expensive cellphone possibly....but the tablet i am probably going to have to pay for out-of-pocket. Hopefully my budget won't leave me out of the game entirely...i know that all the 'new devices' i see out there are like 500+ minimum.. Anyways I work 2 jobs.. no fam to help...im just trying to work with what i got. :angel: So thats why i signed up here first thing....I figured if i had any hope of being pointed in the right direction, it would probably happen here.. seems like a lot of intelligence combined into one lil place @ xda

I was reading an article the other night @ work about the 'best developer phones/tabs' and it mentioned the nexus series of devices. There are just so many different models/types...wifi/3g/4g, wifi only, different cpu speeds, ram sizes etc. It's all very confusing to a mobile/tablet device #noob. When i research android stuff..every article gives a different opinion leading to yet another article.. all of which just seem to be advertisements for selling apps/new cellphones.. almost nothing seems to be 'user-generated' just people with agenda's. I can't afford to make a mistake and end up with a tab/cell that's anything other than "perfect" for me.. i only save enough $ for new hardware like once every 3 years...so i am just really trying hard and putting this time/effort into making sure i talk to people like you who really know what's up.

I just feel stupid...cuz im so good with windows/desktop computers...i got it "down"...i mean just built a #killa #box running a i7-3770k, liquid cooled, ssd's with raptor backups..16gb of DDR3, a R.A.T. mouse for precise graphic design, logitech backlit led flat keyboard.. smoothly running on my own custom windows 7 build/all non-essential services removed..all wrapped up in a stormtrooper looking stryker box. Visual studio and my own apps/services run like water flowing down from a waterfall...i just have like an instinct almost for desktop stuff. When it comes to this mobile/tab stuff.. its like im 15 again learning windows xp..starting over.. but i will figure it out...hopefully with a lil help from you guys!

How easy is it to 'custom yourself' into some sense of anonymity with mobile devices. I know making myself have some semblance of privacy in the world of "google play" will be the very first things im going to sort out/figure out. Things like that (privacy apps etc.) are what fueled the interests of an entire generation windows developers ya know? If 10 years ago someone said that webpages would get access to your full name, phone #, all of your emails...access to your harddrive......it would have been the death of the internet/pc as we know it. Somehow people just decided recently that any time-killing game is worth handing their family history/life over for. IMO it's kinda pathetic... so those things are first on my list!

with a rooted nexus u control which app has control to what
I would suggest you to buy a Nexus 7 2012 as a tablet as it's much much cheaper nowadays when the new version of Nexus 7 was released, but if you have a higher budget than that I would gladly suggest you to purchase the Nexus 7 2013 version.
For phone, I would also suggest a Nexus device, maybe the Nexus 4 as it has dropped alot in price due to the release of Nexus 5 but it's still a great and rapid device which runs very smooth and is really well optimized.
All of those devices are made for development in mind, and there is a huge variety of custom roms for those devices.
I hope that my advices helps you to chose a device which you will like!

I went to t-mobile yesterday afternoon after posting this..... first of all they are offering to pay off my contract @ verizon. Then they have the new Nexus 7 tablet (with the snapdragon 1500) & nexus 5 phones. After detailing the plan for (both) to me... it looks like $16/mo for each device per month (assuming my credit is good enough).
Overall $100 a month for unlimited service + the 2 devices... (assuming i paid for the mobile hotspot option) which im guessing i won't need since I'm going to root the nexus 5 and use something like opengarden etc. So without the mobile hotspot option [data] it might be about $80/mo total...does that seem like a good way to go...or should i really just look into purchasing the Nexus 7 (2012) and Nexus 4 in cash?
Either way I'm glad i looked into this...my current bill monthly at verzion is $102...for 405 anytime minutes on a crappy samsung stratosphere, which is literally incapable of running instagram for more than 20 minutes...it got lagged out/and heated up to about 120 degrees, and started dropping it's 4g connection in that time 20min time frame.

That seem's like a good way to go, actually I would suggest you to go that way as those phones and tablets are wayy better than the ones I suggested you. But they are bit more expensive, that's the only downpart which I can find.
So I would suggest you to grab that deal

Thanks for the suggestions everyone...I ended up taking your advice.
Went today & picked up my nexus 5.... the nexus 7 (2013) wasn't "in-stock"...supposedly I'll have it in 4-6 days though.
Omg..the difference between my old stratosphere & this nex-5 are like...1990's nintendo to 2013 PS4. In for quite a shock though when I went to install instagram/twitter, took a detailed look at the "rights" I would be giving up...laughed my butt off..then clicked each one to read each part in its entirety.. I can't believe people are willing to grant app's access which would essentially make their "tiny computer" with 3-6ghz of processing power & 10mbps average connection become 100% remote controllable by an app developer!! The only applications made for windows that gather this much information + can turn on your webcam without notification + can intercept your raw communications + create raw sockets (and run custom network protocols)...would be black market trojan's which are encrypting their data with custom protocols...the types used by script kiddies you read about in google tech news. I'm sure you guys are all used to this by now...but you can just imagine my lil geeky jaw dropping when I realized the full scope of the corporate information grab taking place right now in the mobile market. It's like my geek ex-boyfriend once told me..."If it's possible and not technically illegal.. you better believe every company that matters is already doing it"
So my first step will be figuring out how to get a custom rom on this phone... selectively choose what information/or b.s. information I'll be providing any app's I pick to take a look at. Any suggestions on where to get started? I would really love to learn mobile technology (android o.s.) from the ground up...the same way i learned how to use a p.c... in such a way that i have the "most" amount of control of my system as possible

Yes it can... i did some research on it. I'm lucky enough to have gotten Android 4.4 KitKat (KRT16M) so App Ops is enabled on my phone. Thank god I didn't upgrade to the latest 4.4.2 etc. Because apparently in that operating system... App Ops is no longer enabled.
