I need help with this Firmware pls - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all sorry here to be a pain, anyhow I started KIES hooked up my Galaxy SII to the PC and when I started KIES I got the following message:
Current Firmware Version: PDA:KF3/PHONE:KE7/CSC:KE3 (XSA)
Latest Firmware Version: PDAKK2/PHONE:K14/CSCKK1 (XSA)
Just like to know if anyone knows much about this firmware update and what it has to offer etc, is it worth to update to?
Also my Galaxy SII is an unbranded this means no carrier bloatware etc.
Thanks

Where is your location?
Go ahead....
This is an update of your firmware 2.3.3 released in June 2011 to 2.3.6 released Nov 2011, are you in Netherlands?

Samsung don't release changelogs.

Sorry I am in Perth Australia.

Changelogs ??
I got this from samsung KIES and thats what exactly that came up when I opened up KIES and connected the phone
So its a update direct from Samsung.

U cant get changelog unless some developers put in their thread for for their custom ROM based on the same firmwares...
go to sammobile.com and make a study of the all sam released firmwares...date of relese PDA, CSC etc..

ok so this firmware update I mentioned above should be listed in sammobile.com as exactly the way I have listed it.
All i want to know is what it offers.

It is exactly the same, check it in Ocaania, started release in Dec 2011,
for the changelog you have to google.....ofcourse there are much much improvements in the firmware from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6

Sorry whats Occania ?

Ok here is the reason I have ask and posted this thread.
My GSIi for the past 2 months has been nothing but probs and I am having no end of data disconnections from it, this means 3G data. For eg when I am on the internet on the top of the screen I will have a 3G and two small arrows (orange and green ) data in and out arrows, after 5 mins or so I would get cut off, wait for 1 minute or so and it will re connect, use it for another 3 mins and it will again cut off, wait again for say 5 mins and it will come back on. It fluctuates on and off.
At one time in a span of 15 mins I got cut off about 5 times just on and off.
this has become very annoying for me and I dont know if this is caused by the Vodafone network or there is a fault with my mobile, I just hope that my phone is not faulty at all.

Hopefully the firmware update should resolve your issue,
I dont know it might be a Hardware issue also....cos one of the best Modem is running in your current firmware KE7....which controlls the 3g and all, along with My latest firmware also running the same modem
Is your phone rooted?

No not rooted just normal.

dammm this is getting confusing, I looked at the sammmobile link you sent, on the top under Oceania one says Australia Optus and the other says Australia, I am now assuming mine is the Australia one as my phone is not a Optus one but juts a unbranded galaxy sII hasnt got any carrier stuff on it.
This one
I9100XWKK2 ## 2.3.6 2011 December I9100XSAKK1 Australia
But my model is under Baseband version is I9100XXKE7

Just try changing the area of reception, in your town...may be the service providers problem...
Are you willing to root your phone and try custom roms?

Yes the Baseband KE7 is older which will be replaced by KI4 which also one of very nice basebands...

1. How do I change the area of reception ?
2. No not ready to root the phone as yet
But am very annoyed about this prob, I miight even call my service provider and discuss this with them.
Like I said I dont know if this is a fault with my phone or the network.
And also does the Firmware update fix this issue.

K14 nice as in what sense ?
Do you know what it offers etc

That suggests a network problem .
That may be the network itself or a dodgy sim card or even the phone did not originate in the area of operation and is using a different areas modem or CSC .
Personal choice would be to first contact the network
Second to back up data and factory reset .
jje

Ok now my other Q here is, how easy is it to use KIES.
Do I just click the Update button and let it do the update firmware by itself and how will I know when the update is finished etc.
I just dont want to ruin my mobile thats all.
Now the other thing is will the screen time out affect this update or the update, this means after 1 minute the screen times out.

are you talking about the problem that the galaxy s2 cannot connect to HSDPA?

Good reading skills bro.
Just thought I would share my experience with the KE2, so here goes. Apart from the obvious com.android.phone force close error when I upgraded from KE1 to KE2, which didn't really bother me at all as it only comes up when starting the phone up, I was also having some issues with bluetooth, I couldn't send or receive calls on my JVC head unit but I could stream music from my SG2 to my JVC. I also noticed a significant increase in battery usage. As soon as I went back to KE1 all issues were resolved and now I'm happy. Whether these bluetooth issues were relating to com.android.phone force close error or if theres some issues with the firmware itself I don't know. Anyone with a working KE2 able to test?

[Q] Anyone else with problems using TMobile Orange in the UK using a T - Mobile Sim?

Hi I am currently a T - Mobile customer and when I originally bought my Samsung Galaxy S2 with the company, I thought I could take advantage of using both the T - Mobile network and 2G services of the T - Mobile Orange Network.
However after successfully using it for the first 2 weeks, after my KE7 firmware update, I have an unbranded phone, it did not connect to the network anymore, stating, even if I manually select T - Mobile Orange in GSM mode only, Cannot registor with network, Unable to connect, then it states it is registered and yet I have emergency calls only stated and not either T - Mobile or even T - Mobile Orange. Then it will not connect to either network manually until I restart the phone.
I have since flashed my phone with various other firmwares, am currently on cognition s2 1.13, it's a great Rom, and still the same thing occurs.
I have contacted T - Mobile, they can't fix it, I have took the phone to a Samsung Repairer and they couldn't see anything wrong, stating it was a fault with Orange, as the guy in the shop's T - Mobile branded Galaxy s2 did the same.
Anyone solved the mystery, or is able to explain the issue to me?
It's doing my nut in, I have had phones like these for years, flashed them and enjoyed them, and usually work things out for myself, my last phone was an Samsung I8910, which was great with custom firmware support and I must say the Galaxy s2 is by far my favourite ever phone, but even my Samsung Omnia I8910 works properly on T - Mobile and Orange, and the latest and greatest phone won't!!
Have you tried flashing a different modem? Seeing as the cognition rom is based on I9100XXKG1, I know of a couple of forum members that have had trouble with the KG1 modem, and had to revert to the KF2 modem.
Worth a try? It won't wipe you phone of anything daft either.
List of official modems: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131950
Before you do anything, can you dial*#1234# and just check what phone software is installed?
Thanks for the option Unfortunately I have tried the KE2, KE7, KF2 and KG1 Modems now, none of them have worked. It is really bizaar as the bloody thing works really well on T - Mobile, when there is coverage, plus the 3 and H is great speeds when they are in coverage, it just won't switch to Orange

one moment, I'm on t-mobile aswell.
text YES to 2121.
Homer moment: Doh, you cant text can you?
Just for reference, I'm with Orange and in my network list I have both "Orange" and "Orange and T-Mobile". I can connect to the Orange one fine, but not to the other one. It does switch to T-Mobile sometimes though. I've seen it do it.
Hi again, I have text yes to 2121, and it was working on my phone before. So yours has no issues then?

Unfortunately if I let mine automatically switch network, it switches to emergency calls only if I am out of a t mobile network range, not orange, and it used to switch to orange no problem
Then when it is in emergency calls only, I have to turn it on and off to get it to work at all, as it will not register back to T mobile
My last attempt......when you go into wireless/mobile network settings, is data roaming ticked?

Yes it is, cheers for all your help. It's very frustrating and I can't fathom it out, so cheers for trying yourself
You don't need data roaming ticked in order to use Orange. T-mobile and Orange are both considered 'home' networks.
I'm on T-Mobile without data roaming ticked and it switches automatically to Orange without any issues. Might be worth phoning t-mobile up and seeing if there's some sort of issue with your account.
I installed Lite'ning Rom and found that I couldn't connect to Orange on my unlocked tmobile sim. Turned out that I had the "com.orange.authentication.simcard.permission" apk missing.
Downloaded it here:- http://www.contentsd.nl/apk/SimServicePermission.apk
and installed it with titanium and registered ok on orange.
Hope this helps.

Hiya guys. Sorry to jump on this thread but I am having the same issue as OP. I'd just like to give you an update on what I know so far. It is a nightmare trying to speak to someone at T-Mobile who actually knows whats going on, but I was persistent and got through to an engineer who said that they are having transmitter problems in east anglia and surrounding areas...not sure if you are in that area or not. Unfortunately all the engineer said is that they are working hard to a. figure out what the problem is ang b. fix it! He also could not give me an ETA and said that the only way to get back onto the network is to reboot the phone a couple of times. Not ideal, but I though it was something to do with the VillainRom that I flashed...so here's stupid me flashing stock, bricking/unbricking the phone etc etc only to find out later that its not the phone...on the plus side I have amazing battery life now haha who would have thought ey!
Anyways, hope this information is useful to you all.
Steph
It is not a ROM issue - it is a T-Mobile/Orange fault

Absolutely right Steph, it is not ROM related.
T-Mobile have acknowledged that there is a problem with registering T-Mobile customers on T'Orange cell towers.
I've been having this issue for a couple of weeks now (also in East Anglia), and after a lot of perseverance I got transferred to Level 2 support (Technical Support - not Customer Support) last Monday. They said there was a 'rectifier problem' on a mast in Henny Street, near Sudbury, Suffolk at the end of June and it has had a knock-on effect on other masts in the area. It was/is a level 2 priority for fix.
I wasn't happy with that explanation as it happens all over Suffolk!
Still with the issue on Thursday, I called them again and got straight through to Level 2 as they had marked my account as an on-going problem which Customer Support (in the Philippines) couldn't handle.
While explaining in detail the 'Your SIM does not allow you to connect to this network' problem the Guy I was talking to received an internal notification that they were aware of issues registering on T'Orange cells, that they'd known about it for 72 hours, have no idea what is causing it, and no eta to fix.
I've been using a forced connection to T'Orange for the last couple of days (poor T-Mo signal in house which always caused it to hunt for T'Orange anyway). Downside of course is that it won't get a 3G signal when forced into T'Orange mode.
Still happening today so need to give them another prod...
Oh, and I found this thread searching for answers - I don't have a Galaxy S, I have a Desire. Further proof that it isn't ROM related.
I'll update when I find out more from them.
Aaron
Just spoken to them again, problem is still on-going, they are still investigating and looking for more samples of the problem to try and isolate the issue. In light of that I would suggest anyone else having this to phone them and ask for Technical Support and register the fault - the more samples they have, the better chance of getting it resolved.
In other words, they still don't know what's causing it or when they'll fix it.

[Q]

I have searched Google but this problem seems to be unique to my sgs2.
I got my sgs2 from UK a week back. Its O2 branded with latest official firmware (2.3.3 and XXKE7), that's what see from phone info. I am using it on 2g network in Pakistan. The mobile works fine and connected to mobile network quickly after 1st boot. But after sometime, when i woke it up from sleep mode, it had lost mobile network connection and went to emergency calls only. This is continuing to happen everyday. I have noticed that it usually happens when the phone is turned on from prolonged sleep, esp in the morning when i wake it up. The network signals show full strength and it also searches all networks available but when i select my network it says , unable to connect try later. The only resolution is that i have to reboot the phone and it automatically selects the network. however that too doesn't work always and i have to reboot several time. Somebody suggested to kill Dialer and reconnect but it didn't help either.
Please help!!!

First update phone to newer version.
Second it might be a sim card problem. Especially if it is a very old card. Try with a newer card.

JJE/Mario: Guys I have come back after a while since It took me longer to flash the ROM. I have updated it with XXKG5 ROM that I found on Intertech post, but to my astonishment, my problem remains the same. Phone stays on "emergency call only" after wake up or when I move few miles from my place. Sometimes it stays on this mode throughout the day. Strangely, GPRS/Edge works, however I do not see the 2 arrows radio symbol in notification area.
Is my phone damned or there is any hope?

I am not sure, but its funny my friend has the BLUE i9300 bought 3 weeks after mine, and he was not getting a notification of the update via kies either, but it did give it to me and my phone the exact day it was out (uk firmware).
about changing the modem, will I need to root for that? i prefer to run stock for now..
that's bizarre but it probably has something to do with the phone being an internation model with a uk csc, but i've used my S1 from the uk several times in the u.s. with t-mobile and never had that problem .....can only assume it is a bug

Yea becuase when the phone arrived it worked great (even had a minor firmware upgrade the day i opened which was like june 15th ish or a few days later) and still worked great, no Roaming at all, then with last weeks update now it roams
It's worth pointing out that changing the modem will not work as a valid solution in this case. If one uses a non-LFB modem with the LFB ROM, the mic doesn't get used. One would have to also go to an older rom in addition to a different modem.
I'm having the same exact issue.
Need a solution.
Tried a factory reset. No dice.
Hi guys,
Didn`t find answer for my questions, so decided to link myself to similar topic.
Since the SW update I have done today my phone doesn`t lock to a network
When I go to settings to find a carrier manually, It takes about 2 minutes to find 4-5 networks available around, I am picking o2 UK (as I have a contract with them) and it says : Registering to o2 UK which takes about 4 minutes. After this it says : Emergency calls only and there is no status bars at all.
Master reset didn`t help.
What steps should I take ?
For you reference :
- Phone took from CPW in UK as sim free
- SIM Card used is from o2 UK (contract)
- I don`t want to flash anything, I would like to stay to stock ROM (if possible)
UPDATE : Chosen `Select Automaticly` allowed the phone to find signal, could make a call etc, but after 30 minutes lost signal again....
Kris
on AT&T / same firmware, no roaming issues.

U Using it in india? Which network u using?
Any updates?
I did find out that the CSC that was applied by default was KOR. I went in and changed this to BTU using *#272*imei#, but still did not solve the issue.
Wondering if a repartition would help?

Hi guys,
Didn`t find answer for my questions, so decided to link myself to similar topic.

If u do not wish to root then your only option is to take it back to the store, so they can fix, u bought the best smart phone available on the market and u can't make phone calls or browse internet(without wifi).
To my understanding, still no resolution on this..
My friends phone after being updated (he just got his first update after having the phone a month) is now roaming as well.. So this is definately something either with our network (t-mobile) or the recent updates.
I've just started living with it, but it sucks becuase it does silly things like makes me click 'download image' when someone sends me a picture message in text...
with the few bugs could be ironed out of this phone kinda frustrating.
I do have similar problems since I installed an update 2 weeks ago. at home the phone says it is roaming at work approx 6 miles away and with a different station I am connecting to it is fine.

Thats interesting, no matter where I go i get roaming. Though a few times I have gotten the 'roaming' warning popped up, so maybe i went out of roaming and didnt know it? I'll keep a closer eye on it.
It is very frustrating and annoying. I've called T-Mobile and they said they would open a case with Samsung. If you guys could call too, we might get a fix.
I really suspect it is something in the CSC. Maybe if we could get the T Mobile SIII CSC and apply it?

My suspicion is wrong. I pulled the TMB CSC from a T999 ROM and manually copied it to /system/csc/TMB, then used the CSC Selector App to change to TMB.
No dice. Still in Roaming.

If you want help you must provide relevant info - and also be able to think a little for yourself!
Have you done anything special to the phone before that? Like programming a ROM in Odin?
Is the IMEI in place?
im new to the s3 and dont have a clue about what anything is. ive never done anything to it.....

Hi I think this may be an issue in some parts of the world, but not all. I have regular signal cuts like this in South Africa, but generally only when I'm in an area with weak cell signal. My wife also has a S3 LTE and gets the same signal cuts. When it happens I reboot my phone and it's fine again. I even went back to stock to test and it still happens on stock, just as it did when I first got the phone in November 2012.
I've been on AOSP roms the last few months and then it was fine, no signal cuts. Same with my wife's phone. Now I'm back on stock and the signal cuts are back, albeit not so often anymore, maybe one or two a week. I'm going to run stock for a few weeks and see if the issue persists.
What modem are you using? Have you changed it or is it the same modem that came with your phone?

a MODEM IS A MODULATOR DEMODULATOR . basically the bit that connects to the network .
Modem = Baseband .
\Suggest one factory reset two if that fails service centre and three read the basic faqs and guides .

you need to search before you post. also, answer my question for further troubleshooting
