I did this on my HTC, would love to change the opening boot image. Can we do it?
Sure can. Head on over to tge photon 4g apps and themes forum. There's a couple threads over tgere about it and one or two of theme have "how-to's" in them.

Are you referring to boot animations? See my sig. I'm talking about the first image displayed when the phone boots.

Yes you can change the first splash screen that comes on before the boot animation. There is a thread on it. I'm on my phone so no link right now.

You're probably looking at a post in this thread:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16634732
Reading through the entire thread reveals that many folks ran into errors based on incompatibility between the *.ZIP file and different versions of CWM.
You've got to create the *.BIN file to put into the *.ZIP to flash via CWM, so you might as well go ahead and flash it via fastboot.
Like anything else; Flash via CWM or via Fastboot only after you have read and are very confidant in what you are doing.
Best regards,
-boggsie
I've tried using the cwm flashable zips when I first did mine and they never worked. Fast boot is the only way I have gotten it to work. It only takes like 2 seconds to do.

When you select the first 70 digits and then hit delete the next screen should pop up and you should select the second buble option delete actual number of digits then the same exact thing for the last two digits of your pic delete actual count. Now when you open your headerlogo.bin select all of it and hit copy, when the next window pops open leave it as is " dont select actual count" now go to your picture bin file and paste it to the very begining of your numbers when the screen pops up leave everything as is " dont select actual count". You should know the rest of the steps with the help of those links provided however i say this shpill because its not said in those links specifically how to choose the copy and pasting. There is a difference, for me when i tried selecting actual count for every pop up windows my image wouldnt flash over. So good luck.

i've done this mod that exact same way on my aria with 4 different roms with no issues at all every time.
you really just need to save the qwerty.kl file and push it to the phone. reboot into recovery, go to the partitions menu, mount the system partition, push the file via adb, reboot your phone and voila.

I've done that. The qwerty.kl method just simply isn't working for some people.
This worked for me
Couldn't figure out how to add attachments to this post, and it won't let me add an external link since it's a new forum account. google ojwake-signed.zip or something.
Steps: Load file to SD card, boot in to recovery mode, install zip, locate this zip on flash card, reboot.

Just to make it even easier on you
EDIT-Short Version...Download file from link above
-:Have Clockwork Recovery Installed and know how to use ADB:-
-DOWNLOAD ATTACHED to linked post qwerty.kl (may need 7zip to extract file from archive...)
-BOOT into CLOCKWORK recovery with NO USB PLUGGED INto phone!!!
-PARTITIONS>MOUNT /SYSTEM
-adb push qwerty.kl /system/usr/keylayout|adb reboot
As far as I know, this ridiculously simply method of pushing qwerty.kl has worked for everyone except the few that didn't boot into clockwork correctly, once they booted into clockwork correctly it then worked for them.
I updated the instructions to be crystal clear for all you noobs. If pushing a file to your android device is too painfully complicated for you, I suggest you read/search more and figure out what you are actually doing.
Neverwhere10's steps are just as painfully complicated, but at least he is providing some constructive input.
Thanks!

Here is a link to a thread from January-February time frame...has some info for creating the .img file used in the PG06IMG.zip out of a .bmp file.
We used to do this in adb, but this method appears to be slicker and has the advantage of being able to change between any number of splash screens on a whim...without needing a computer.

Edit: an even better link to the program nbimg.exe for converting bitmaps to .img is here:

(I reread the OP again and still can't find any info regarding the conversion .bmp >> .img...or is that not necessary with this method?)

I knew this thread looked really familiar.. Here's a thread that was started about 4 or 5 months ago Throw your Splash Screens here!. There's several nice splash screens throughout the thread, also the stock splash is in the op.
I have a strange feeling PhotoShop didn't save it as that resolution but I'll find out in a few when I go to flash.
Hey, everyone. I know this is probably the last thing you want to read, but I could really use some prompt help.
I tried the method posted in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686551
I got to step 3, but it didn't let me choose recovery. It just started installing the update. However, when it rebooted, it never got past the white HTC boot screen. I pulled the battery, pulled the MicroSD card, went back into the bootloader and tried running Factory Reset. Same result - stuck at white HTC boot screen.
Some more information:
1. Device is completely stock - no customer bootloader, stock Gingerbread OS. (2.3.4. That's why I wanted to try this in the first place. According to HTC, my IMEI number block hasn't been updated for ICS, yet.)
2. I renamed the file "update" as per the thread.
I'm hoping that the devs and contributors here will have mercy on a lowly noob who's having problems. I'm hoping to either return to stock and wait for the ICS update, or get to the point where I can install a custom ROM found here. (I was thinking SpeedROM). But, as my device has Gingerbread (or, potentially nothing at this point), I'm not sure where to go from here.
Thanks so much for any suggestions. You guys are the best, and I love this site.
Not sure if you've tried this yet, just name your file as PH85IMG.zip and place it on your microSD. Boot into bootloader and let it run the update. If this is what you did, then I have no clue what happened.
Just out of curiosity, why didn't you get the official OTA the official way if you're completely stock?
PS - This question belongs in the Q&A subforum. Remember that next time if you don't want to get flamed =)

The official update just never showed up. I literally lost count of the number of times I went into Settings > About phone > HTC software updates > Check now.
I've been on probably 4 chats and 4-5 calls between T-Mobile customer service and HTC tech support. The general consensus is that my phone's IMEI number is in a block that hasn't been authorized for the ICS update, yet. But, I really wanted to upgrade, and I think it's ridiculous that it's been 2 months since the update and my phone can't.
Ok, so I'm first going to apologize, since I've heard that double-posting is very much not accepted by forum communities.
I've tried several times to fix this. I renamed the file as was suggested, and went back into the bootloader. It (apparently) scans the MicroSD card for files, and says "Loading...[PH85IMG.zip]" (It attempts to load PH85DIAG.zip, says no image, and PH85IMG.nbh, and again says no image)
After this, it says "Checking..[PH85IMG.zip]" (That is the only thing it says)
Then, I get the options:
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
FACTORY RESET
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC
If I go into FASTBOOT, it doesn't really help - just reboots either the bootloader (repeating this process, obviously) or the phone, which goes back to the white HTC boot screen it's hanging on.
If I go into RECOVERY, there's not option to install the .zip like the other page suggests, but if I try "Install update from SD card" it gives me "Illegal operation" and reboots.
If I go to FACTORY RESET, it acts like it's reinstalling, but leads to the same problem.
I'm thinking that I just nuked the phone's internal storage, and completely deleted the original OS. Any ideas on how to resolve that?
Or, if that's not the problem, where should I go from here?
It's funny....I troubleshoot computers for a living....but I'm lost right now on this phone.
Thank you for the continued help, gents! I'd really like to not have to throw away a $350, brand new phone....

Hm....well, it's not the third. I doubt the first, unless the wrong file was linked in the thread I mentioned. I'll try downloading the file again.
So, if this still doesn't work for me, let's attack this from a different angle. Are there any other options? Could I change the bootloader, install the leaked ICS ROM, then install another one after that? Like I said, I had been considering trying out Project Butter Speed ROM. I know that the instructions for all that are in the Amaze Bible thread, but there's such a large volume of data there, it's hard to sift through.
Edit: Re-downloaded the file; no change. Any more suggestions?
I've been away a while, but if my memory serves me correct, to install it using ph85img, you must first relock your bootloader. are you locked or unlocked right now?

I think you need to reconsider the name of your file. If it shows up as PH85IMG.zip, more likely than not, it is actually named PH85IMG.zip.zip
This is due to how Windows reads files. If the file is of a known file type, it will not show up the extension (even though it IS there).
Try renaming it to PH85IMG and then put it in the root directory of the SD card and then boot into bootloader. It *should* read it.

I'm a computer support tech. Trust me, I did not add an extra file extension, lol. Windows does indeed recognize it as a zip file, so I know the extension is properly set. Name is just set to "PH85IMG"
Not trying to sound like a jerk; just making sure people know where I'm coming from.

I understand that, but if you read through the Q&A section, you'll know why I imperatively make that statement. Can you link me to which file you're trying to flash? I'm thinking it might be a wrong file you're trying to flash.
When you flash or update via a stock ruu, it may seem stuck but it isn't, first boot always takes time, read through this thread properly when I get home, the guys seems to be here, so I'm not needed anyways.

Also she is coming from froyo..
You can root it in froyo but the question is what do you want to do. If you are going to flash a custom ROM then you need to go back to stock (eclair). Either way, short fuse super one click is best way to get root. Google how to root vibrant with super one click, you should find files and directions. The update zip you referred to is directions to get CWM recovery.

You can download the Superuser.zip and/or the CWR zip from my signature.
If you are just going to root it and leave Eclair on there, then pull the Superuser zip from my signature.
If you are going to flash a custom ROM on there, then pull the CWR zip from my signature (but make sure you have already downloaded a ROM.zip to flash with this).
For Root. Put Supersuser.zip in your Internal_SD card and make sure it is named Update.zip and the only thing on there named that. Boot into recovery using the key combo (Volume +/- and Power, when you see Vibrant come up, release the Power button but keep ahold of the Vol+/-) It will boot into "stock" recovery. Scroll down to Reinstall Packages and hit it. Might have to hit it twice, then reboot. You should have Root.
For CWR/Custom ROM. Same as above only no need for the Root.zip. Find a ROM that you want to flash (make sure to read OPs) and download it and put it on a folder where you know it will be in the phone. Just put the CWR on your Internal_SD and again make sure it is named Update.zip. Boot into recovery, scroll down to Reinstall Packages, hit it. It will cycle through and the stock (blue) recovery will turn to CWR (green) and you can then scroll down to Install From SD card and find the ROM that you downloaded beforehand.
Some things. Booting into recovery isn't easy and can take you a few times to get it. Also you can root using Z4 app, but you'll have to find that on your own.

You made your mistake by not looking at all.
If you want a guide to run you through these things look at droidstyles sticky in the Development section. It explains everything you need to know.
Short of it is you need to check the MD5sum of the radio once you have downloaded it to your phone, you can use apps like AFV from the Play Store to check the MD5. Then boot to recovery (from a powered off state Vol Up, Home, Power), hit install, find the Radio wherever you put/downloaded it and swipe to install, and reboot. Thats it.

Actually shangrila500, I did do some searching as I stated in my OP. I believe the reason I missed was I was searching for the term "radio" not "modem" . My last phone's (Thunderbolt) forums used the term radio instead.
First we had to:
- rename the .zip file: "PG05IMG.zip"
- then we had to put the .zip file in the root directory of our sd card
- reboot
- accept the update
- lastly you had to erase the "PG05IMG.zip" file from the root of the card otherwise you could go into bootloops.
Yeah, it was a bit of hoop jumping to flash radios, thats why I asked if there is a procedure for my new Note2,
Thanks for your walk through, it helps me out greatly (and others) !!! :good::good::good:
