Guys, looking for your feedback on what apps/packages are safe to remove/freeze/disable on the stock AT&T ROM. There are going to be plenty of people who want to root but not go custom ROM, including me for probably a few weeks/month for things to shake out.
I'll update this post with items which are known to be safe to disable, but looking for feedback from you guys. I'm a Samsung newb, my previous phone is a Nexus One. Thanks!
Please provide as much info as possible so people can disable in their favorite way.. Some use TiBu, some remove/rename in /system/app, some pm disable.
Tethering Manager (enable wifi tether)
TetheringManager2.apk
pm disable com.tecace.tetheringmanager

I read a few guides regarding rooting and I'm still sort confused by some aspects of it which still eludes me.
I have a UK T-mobile S2 which is brand new and while I adored this phone and happy I got this over the 4S. The one aspect I'm not too keen on was the amount of bloatware which this devices comes with.
So using this guide here:
http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/mobile-phones/how-to-root-your-samsung-galaxy-s2-50004972/
1. However, what kernel do I need for it? So many to choose from?
2.I like Touchwiz and I want to keep it however, is there a rom to get rid of all the bloatware that I don't need like T-mobile recommend apps. I'm not sure what rom I need or do I need something else?
3.Unrooting is possible since I may need to send it back to Samsung since there's a screen problem which isn't major but I don't want to send it straight back at the moment.
Thank you for your patience, and help.
just install the right one from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
then use cwm app to make a back up of your current branded rom. Then either download titanium backup form market and use it to uninstall any apps you dont want on there or flash the non branded rom for t-mobile from here

Been trying to find the most recent Stock Rom for the Galaxy tab 10.1.
Had rooted mine and tried a few Custom ROMS which three kept rebooting and the 4th one by TASK (latest one) was great then kept slowing down to the point apps just crash. Did a restore to my backup that I did right after applying root, and didnt keep any of the original stock roms apps like task manager and weather widget.
Not thrilled about how when you save a ROM it doesnt save the apps too, or at least when you put another ROM on it removes the other apps. Either way.
Looking for the download for Stock Rom.
*Note, I will root the Tab again, is there a way to install stock ROM and still keep root so I dont have to do it all over again?
There are LOADS of stock roms, my friend. Take a look over the forum.
Or samfirmware.com
Can hardly help you more since you provide no info at all on what model you have;
7500, 7510.. wifi or 3G.. country.. languages you need...
Okay... So can anyone else provide me a link for a wifi only version, forum perusing in this massive site will be a huge pain.

Hey guys,
i am having a little bit of an issue here.
I want to put a custom rom on my SGS2, but I want to obtain the Samsung Dive capabilities.
I googled it and found out that it is not possible to use it without a custom rom based on Samsung firmware or at least including the samsung framework and using a lot other samsung apps.
Since I was going to use CyanoGenMod this is not an option.
So... the data and access I am giving to those apps or services I do not want to use just anything.
Can you recommend any serivces?
Self-Hosted would be great, but i doubt such thing is out there.
Greetings

I wanted to start a new thread an accidently answered to this topic...
Hello everyone,
I am a new Galaxy S4 owner. I would like to root my phone and install a custom rom on it.
Could you recommend a rom? I know there are many developers who have created roms already but I would like some personal advise from people who have flashed various roms already and tried them out.
My preferences are:
1. I want the phone to be stable. I don't want to continually flash different roms. I want one that is free of bugs (mostly, at least), polished and able to be run long term without significant problems or limitations.
2. Personally, I am not a huge fan of TouchWiz and a rom based on the "Google Edition", with a straight and clean Android OS would be preferred. But I would like to retain as many features of the S4 as possible, from the Camera features to the touted (in commercials) S4 apps, at least the ones that would have any value and are not just junk.
3. I don't know much about Kernals, modems and different apps that I could potentially use. If you could recommend some of these I would appreciate it as well.
I did recently update the software on the phone. I asked this in another thread, but does this limit my ability to root? Is there a workaround?
Thanks for the help.

If you took the OTA update then you are stuck for the time being. You can get root, but no custom recoveries or ROMS.
That said, there is at least one GE ROM running around, but I've not really looked at them as I'm trying TW out for a change.

1) READ. Pick some roms that seem interesting to you and test drive them. Your basic "pick a rom for me" query is strongly frowned upon and will result in a thread lock. Don't expect to be spoonfed- It's a subjective query that only you can answer for yourself. I suspect that the reason it wasn't locked is that you lack the ability to flash any roms, thus rendering your query moot.
2) See 1.
3) Also see 1.
Of course, all this is moot, as you apparently didn't read the multitude of posts regarding the ME7 update that you took. You no longer have the ability to flash custom roms, recoveries, or kernels. Perhaps you missed the very prominent thread in General offering a $3,000 bounty for root and recovery? All you can do is a basic root, a few mods, and use some apps that require root access.
yes unfortunately if you took the dreaded over the air update you can no longer install a custom recovery which is needed for installing any custom rom, There really is a lot you can do with a stock rooted phone like remove the annoying bloatware and back up your apps with titanium!!

Hello Guys,
I am new To XDA and recently registered. So I am not sure that I am writing this thread in right place or not. So, please tell me the right place if i am wrong.
Ok, I have Samsung Galaxy A5 (2014)/(2015) (SM-A500G). It came with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.
As most of you know that few months earlier samsung rolled out the marshmallow upgrade (6.0.1).
I upgraded but my device performance considerably reduces. Even some daily used to tasks start giving too much load to the device. In small words, Device started to hang too many times than earlier.
And some of you may suggest the reasons like:- Nearly complete storage, Power Saving, Too much apps, Virus and malware etc.
(Samsung Help Center Suggested it). But i can assure you this is not the reason. My storage is almost 70% free. etc etc.
The real reason is MARSHMALLOW UPGRADE.
So, I think the best way to solve it is Rooting.
But I am an newbie to the world of rooting. I don't know what is custom recovery, TWRP, Odin, CF-Autoroot etc.
I only heard there names but nothing else.
This doesn't mean that I know nothing about how android works and what is custom ROMs. I can manage these things; but not the above mentioned.
So please anyone of you can tell a detailed guide how to root galaxy A5 (2014) on marshmallow 6.0.1 with all the steps mentioned
and what each steps do. It will be very helpful.
And few things more, 1] I am thinking that after rooting I reinstall the official Marshmallow ROM; as earlier I updated my phone by OTA update and so might it cannot get to it's full potential. I am not sure that this method will work or not, so please clarify this point also.
2] My only source of Internet Connection is the device itself by making hotspot. So please please guys, give me a fully tested crash proof way to do rooting. I don't want to brick my device ( No one wants but in this case if it happens I can't find some way on the internet to reverse it). And you can also suggest any before hand precautions like full Backup of current system image etc etc. that will help if something goes wrong.
3] I already read a few threads on XDA about this issue but I cannot understand properly, so please don't provide links to these threads.
4] Also please provide a list of official and unofficial ROMs for A5
Thanks in advance
I have to read some pages to find a good tutorial but I'll find one. I root Samsung phones all the time. Its not going to brick your device. Asking here was smart, don't trust any website you find off google without fully understanding. Also, you can not install stock ROMs from custom recovery, only from a computer. That process is easy. Download the firmware and flash it. The other choice is custom ROM and recovery. Let me know what option you want to go with and I'll explain more. There are good custom ROMs, ressurection remix. Lineage os. Ice, tipsy is a good one. I use RR on my S5 and s7

Thanks for reply. I really appreciate it.
I read your reply but can't understand it fully. The reason is simple- I currently don't know what is Custom recovery and Flashing. Please explain these terms first and then I will tell what way I want.
Thanks.
A custom recovery allows you to flash zip files and operating systems from your phone directly, but only custom operating systems, not the official Samsung firmware. It is safe to use. Flashing stock firmware is the operating system as Samsung released it with nothing changed. You can gain root access to your device on stock or custom. Usually custom removes the carrier and Samsung stuff that takes up phone memory. It depends on what you want to use your phone for.
OK I go for samsung stock (official) ROM
Flashing is installing the contents of the package to your phone with a special tool like Odin or a custom recovery. And recovery is the menu on your phone from which you can restore backups or flash files.

Create an account on this site, it is free. Locate firmware 5.1.1 for your device, and make sure it is the same as your cellular service provider. So if you are on AT&T download a5 5.1.1 AT&T firmware file. It will be a large file. Once you have the file you will need a computer application named Odin. I will post a link for it shortly.
Hey wait a second. there's 6.0.1 or 5.0.2 files present. no 5.1.1.
Sorry, I replied too late. Actually caught in busy work.
Ok, I googled to know more about rooting etc. etc.
And I got a few uderstanding.
Then I re-read your replies and fully understood them.
Then something came to my mind:-
I am currently on 6.0.1 and Want to re-install it. So I currently downloaded 6.0.1 firmware from sammobile.
So, I don't know Odin can reinstall firmwares or not.
Just for your knowledge. See If we are going right or not.
Thanks
Hey, Anyone out there, please help me.
