Hi,
I've looked around but I can't find a relevant thread for this, sorry if I've missed it and this is a duplicate thread.
Is it possible to root the S2 using a onetouch app such as Z4root or Androot?
I've read that neither of the two work on my current firmware vesion (gingerbread 2.3.5) so wondered if there were any recommended alternatives?
I would just go ahead and try the other two regardless but I did this with an older phone (Galaxy Portal) and the root failed and the phone just played up after that.
I'd rather not be flashing different ROMs on it at this stage as I'm awaiting the proper release of ICS before I play around with custom ROMs. Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Yes read the Z4root post.
jje
Odin is your easiest and best bet to get root.
after that I personally use CWM manager on the link provided above. DO NOT download ROM manager from market and use it to manage updates. In the past the ROM Manager installed a CWM which cannot read internal or external SD.
Once CWM Manager is installed simply download the custom kernel from Android Dev section (in zip format) then go into CWM Manager and select "Update" and bingo, it will do everything for you automatically
Thanks a lot for your replies

Hi,
I have a problem with upgrading and wondered if anyone could help, please. I have searched the forum and couldn't find an exact answer to my problem.
In November my wife broke the usb on her X10i and hasn't been able to upgrade to 2.1 because of Sony's lack of OTA updates.
Is it possible to root and flash 2.1 on the X10i using the SDcard only instead of connecting the phone to the PC through usb?
What is the best way to root and the best 2.1 rom to use when flashing a pay monthly O2 X10?
Thanks for any help in advance.
The model is an X10i
Firmware 1.6 (obviously)
baseband 1.0.16
Kernel 1.6.29
Build R1FA016
1. Search & download Z4 root to your sd card (use google, can't miss it)
2. Download BUSYBOX from the market
3. Follow the instructions on this link to install XRECOVERY:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
After these your phone should be ready to be flashed, it's just a matter of what you want to flash it to.
Hope these help.
Thank you, I'll try your suggestions.
A standard 2.1 rom that works on an O2 x10i is fine to flash to, doesn't have to be customised or fancy. Any suggestions on the best and most stable rom to go for?
Cheers.
I think you will be fine with the Generic 2.0.2.A.0.24 build. (Thought I had the link to the zip file but I must have deleted it, I used the flashtool exclusively for 2.1 and I used xrecovery when I started to use froyo.) I've only had my x10 for a little over 2 months, flashed it to 2.1 after a few days of getting it then I switched to 2.2 betas since the new year but I was happy with that 2.1 version the short time I had it.
Thank you very much
A couple more annoying newbie question though.
I rooted the phone but couldnt install busybox from the market, does Z4 root install it when it roots the phone?
I can't move the three xrecovery files from my sdcard into the system/bin folder on the phone. Do I need to install Root Explorer from the Market to access and write the 3 files onto the phone system folder?
Thanks.

No problem I have a few things I still need to learn myself so no worries.
First, when you run z4 root does it say that its rooted?
Did you get an error when installing busybox or are you saying you can't find it in the market?
No, z4 doesn't install busybox.
Yes, you'll need to install root explorer before you can push any file to the system/bin folder/ on the phone.
Z4root worked, i chose permanant root, when I try to install busybox I get the message
Your Phone is rooted.
Busybox was not found.
The app failed either because your device is not nand unlocked or we were unable to remount.
I installed Titanium backup to check the phone is rooted and it says it could not require root priviliges either.

Sounds like z4 root didn't work since 2 different apps does not see your phone as being rooted. Uninstall z4 then search and download for Universal Androot 1.6, that's the other root app I've used in the past.
Thanks.
Phone rooted, busybox and root explorer installed.
Xrecovery files moved.
Can't get into the xrecovery menu at startup
My rooted Orange San Francisco is looking like a good buy now. I'll give up on messing with the phone. Thanks for all your help and time, my wife gets a new phone in year and it will probably take me that long to get it working and for SE to release 2.2

hi there, dont give up now, you are getting so close!
you dont really need to use xrecovery menu at all. the idea for you would be the following:
1. root the 1.6 phone - done
2. install titanium backup/my backup pro and backup your data - done (i think)
3. download the 2.1 flashtool from the following thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683793 (choose the appropriate ROM - if unsure ask questions! i would recommend the latest X10a_2_1_A_0_435_GLOBAL)
4. run the flash tool and update phone to 2.1
5. reroot phone with z4root and reinstall backup software
6. recover all backups and you are now done!
i should clarify also.....the reason i have recommended you NOT to use the xRecovery menu is fairly simple. If you are not planning on constantly flashing new ROMs and booting into other ROMS, then its simply not necessary for you.
The benefits of xRec are that you can take a complete backup of your phone, flash it with something else and then recover the backup when you are done. Its a simple way to flash new roms quickly, but as i said, not really necessary for you.
Flashtool is very easy to use, all the instructions are provided on the screen, and it is done in 5 minutes also, there are lots and lots of tutorials posted around the place too.
good luck!

You are on point MRTIM, I can't argue with what you said. But like he mentioned on his first post, his wife broke the USB on the phone that's why he is doing it the long way.
@Scribbling Are you pressing the back button on the phone as soon as you see the white SE screen?
If you are still having trouble there is another way. One thing I failed to mention is the new version of xrecovery 0.3 is an actual APK file. That means you can just download it to your PC, transfer to your SD card, browse to the location on your phone then tap to install it. If you need a browser you can use ASTRO FILE MANAGER from the Market which is free.
PLEASE NOTE AND I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. If you are going to try and reinstall the xrecovery APK package, make sure to uninstall BUSYBOX then pull any xrecovery files that you already pushed to the phone prior to installing the v0.3 APK.
Let us know if you have any other questions. I agree with MRTIM, why stop now? You are almost there.
Thanks.
Broken Usb is the annoying bit
I'll try installing Xrecovery as an apk.
Ugh..... Xrecovery could not be installed to this device. I'll try Xrec 0.2 later, if I can find the will.
I am having some serious issues....
I am new to the streak, and am absolutely loving it so far. I am coming over from the Samsung Captivate where I had installed CM7 and then MIUI, with no issues. But I find the streak to be a totally different animal.
I was able to find and install the official at&t 2.2 rom by renaming the package to update.pkg and placing on the external SD card. After running it from recovery I had a working 2.2 rom unrooted.
But, I want to root it. Super 1-click and androot doesn't work. And I can't even get z4root on my phone, whenever I try to DL it to my streak I get an unknown error and the phone says it can't support the file type. I want to start installing custom roms and everything, but this is so different from the samsung way to do things that I am completely lost.
Please help, and thanks. And as an fyi, I have been scouring the internet for all the necessary info, but nothing I have found helps.
you dont need to root to install a custom rom, there are multiple huge threads in the general section on rooting stock
It is probably best to read up before you do such things with you phone.
Try the beginners manual first.
Can be downloaded here
Good luck.
And if you have difficulties on installing apps outside the market, you could try these steps:
A. Setting -> Applications -> Unknown Sources. (check it)
B. Mail the APK file to the gmail-account you are using in your streak.
You can install it from you mailbox.

Moving to Q&A
hello,
I rooted my SGS2 using the noob friendly method involving chainfire's method. I got the super user permission and cwm app alright.
to verify its working i bought and installed the triangle away app to remove the yellow exclamation symbol at the start. Its a super app and you should buy it as a token of appreciation for the hard work those guys have done
all my data and apps were intact though i had backed them up using mybackup pro.
Then i noticed 3 apps were missing -
xda deevelopers app
merriam websters dictionary
one more i am unable to find because the icon is not showing and i cannot pinpoint what it was ??
I tried to reinstall the 2 apps and after downloading it says - "couldn't install on USB storage or SD card"
to make sure i went ahead and installed a game springshoot and played for a few minutes and it worked fine.
so what went wrong and how do i set it right again ?
---------------------------------------------------------
I also had another doubt.. it was mentioned in the chainfire's thread somewhere that it is closet to the stock kernal and that it is not compatible to the rom manager and we should use cwm to manage app and everything. So what is the difference between the two and should i flash another kernal or rom to make it compatible ?
Also after using the cf method can i install cyanogenmod stable version on my phone now ? is rom manager necessary for installing new roms ?
thanks..
i am sorry but after searching everywhere i still cant find any answers... amybe not searching the right places
can anyone help me with the lost apps.. i still cant install the ones that got uninstalled upon rooting though i did installed titanium backup and did a successful backup and also connectbot and root checker to verify if root access is provided properly...
should i simply do a backup and go for a new custom rom and then install those apps ? i will try cynogenmod now and see if i can reinstall everything back including the lost apps.
will keep posted on how it goes...
Some cf root kernels have issues with external storage. They are flagged with stars. You can
- flash a valid cf root again
- flash your stock kernel then root with the guide method 1 (link in my signature) : proper and no yellow triangle

Hi. I want to make you some questions about root.
01. Now i have the jelly bean nordic 4.1.2 "I9100XXMS2 / I9100XWLSS" with sales code nee and "PhilZ-cwm6-XWLSS-OXX-5.00.4-signed" installed to my phone.
02. Does the root affect the stability of any mobile phone?
03. If we install root to any mobile phone(Like samsung galaxy s2 i9100) can we un-root it WITHOUT loosing any data/options/settings?
04. How we can find out which root file it is better for our phones? What exactly we must look?
05. Does ALL rom versions has root files?
06. What exactly change the root files?
A LOT OF THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND YOUR ANSWERS.

1. Depends on what you do with root.
2. As far as I know. NO. ( have not tried )
3. Don't understand what your asking.
4. Whenever you flash a ROM it will. ( your phone must be unlocked it's not the same as root.
5. Nothing???

05. I don't thing it doesn't change anything at all to the mobiles with root files.
I believe it change importand files so we have admin access to the mobiles phones and not simple user access.
i believe if an root file don't create it well then we have unstability problems to any phone.
1) Read.
2) Read.
3) Read.
4) Read.
5) Read.
It's all there.
Now, root is to gain access to our devices, we can do this in various ways, depends on the ROM.
The only root that works ON EVERY ROM is Chainfire's EverRoot featured in Mobile Odin Pro app. Why? Because it roots the ROM during the flash.
Stability? Of course, as long as you don't use the rooted status to temper with the device (certain apps like Setcpu) in a dangerous way.
As this is a "state", it can be undone (unroot). Data, no harm.
I can see that you were thinking CF- root, stop it, CF-root stopped being THE root method on ICS. Since ICS you've got ExynosAbuse, custom kernels and CWM + BusyBox + SU recovery flash.

Read what and where?
And i DON'T have ics but jelly bean.
Is there any SAFE ROOT file for any jelly bean release?
And no i don't use the root from overclock the phone the only use of root is to make a complete backup WITH SETTINGS from the programs i want like wifi stored passwords and i CAN'T do that to a NO ROOT phone so the root files is one way road.
Do you have any to suggest any other program that DOESN'T NEED root to make a complete backup of programs with their settings?
Read the Stickies. Near the top of the General section. Like everyone else here.
Backup without root ? Search Google Play.
You're obviously in a tizz that rooting your phone is somehow harmful to the phone despite what people have told you to the contrary (I.E it isn't), so do yourself a favour & leave your phone as it is, you'll probably end up 'breaking' it.
Already have install the nordic 4.1.2 even it doesn't come in my country to unbranded mobiles galaxy s2 and already do root and i believe the reason for these restarts is the root file.
And another thing is if from any GENUINE 4.1.2 ROM when the mobile starts if it run the music app and it is running at the active app.
I ask that because at 4.0.3 it doesn't run any app with the power on mobile or at least doesn't appear at active apps widget.
No, no and no. Just factory reset.
And use comas man.
Sent from the little guy
To your 4.1.2 doesn't run any app when you power on the phone?
With original NOT CUSTOM 4.1.2 Nordic nee?
When I tell run app that has it at the widget active apps.
I have multiple questions pertaining to root and ROMs, any advice on any one of them would be appreciated. My questions surround a Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and a Nexus 7 (2012).
Samsung Galaxy S
ROM Manager
The SGS4G XDA forums have coined it as the "ROM Mangler", my model of Galaxy S is not a compatible device. However, every ROM I've flashed so far has included Clockworkmod5 or Clockworkmod6 (which are only accessible through Recovery). I naturally want to use this app to manage my ROMs on this device, but am wondering if I should or if I will be able to?
Nexus 7, and other Google/Nexus devices
OTA (over-the-air) software updates
I read a comment from a guy on Youtube that said he rooted his Nexus 7, but eventually received a software update from Google. He said he had to re-root his device after this. I am assuming the notification never went away, and he decided to install the update. How would I prevent something like this from happening? Should I install a ROM immediately after rooting??
Internal Storage
My Nexus 7 doesn't have an SD card, but has 32GB of internal storage space. My file explorer shows that the device has an 'sdcard' folder, but wouldn't that folder be wiped if I decided to root and flash a ROM on this device?? How would I prevent this scenario from happening?
General
Busybox
What is Busybox, and should it be installed? I watched a Youtube video suggesting to install it anyway, but I highly doubt I will ever use or need it. After rooting my Galaxy, I noticed Busybox was automatically installed. However after flashing several ROMs, I notice that some of them don't come with Busybox pre-installed.
Cyanogenmod
I currently have an unofficial Cyanogenmod 10.1 (w/Android 4.2.2) ROM installed on my Galaxy. But what is Cyanogenmod exactly, and why is it a big name in the ROM community? I've heard a lot about AOKP too.
SuperUser
My current ROM is missing a Superuser app. Should I install a Superuser app, and does it matter which one I choose?
If a Superuser app has already been pre-installed with a ROM, is updating to the Play Store version a good idea? Are there any consequences to installing a different superuser like Super SU or SuperUser from Clockworkmod? Is uninstalling one Superuser for another a good idea?

To answer your questions:
Samsung Galaxy S
ROM Manager
ROM Manger has been buggy for a while now and can cause a lot of problems on certain devices, I would personally avoid it for the time being. That being said the best way to manage your ROM's (And any other Kernel, or MOD's you may want to flash) is too boot your device into recovery mode by using the key combination described in this post, or by running the following command from ADB on your computer:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Once in recovery, you can flash any ROM that you pushed to your phones sdcard. Make sure to always perform a NANDROID backup of your current setup in recovery mode, before installing a new ROM, Kernel, or other MOD (Such as editing your build.prop file). Also before flashing anything in recovery make sure it is intended for your device and that you read and re-read, and re-read again the instructions on how to properly flash the file.
Nexus 7, and other Google/Nexus devices
OTA (over-the-air) software updates
It is always assumed that any OTA update you apply will break root and that you will have to re-gain root access by re-rooting your device. You can disable OTA updates a couple of different ways. One method is to use an app such as FOTAkill to prevent OTA updates from happening. Another method is to use an app such as Titanium Backup to freeze and disable certain system apps that control OTA updates from being sent and received. Lastly, you can install a custom ROM to prevent OTA updates from being pushed to your device.
Internal Storage
This is a great question. The way the Nexus 7 and other devices that don't have an actual physical sdcard slot handle this is the sdcard folder you see in the file explorer acts as an emulated sdcard. So this way when you go to install a custom ROM in recovery mode when the ROM installation requires you to wipe everything the contents of the emulated sdcard will be untouched and remain as if it were a actual physical sdcard.
General
Busybox
Busybox is a series of stripped down GNU utilities and command line applets, you can find more about Busybox and what it is here. As far as needing it in the beginning you might not need it but as you get more familiar with modifying devices is comes in very handy for performing certain operations and tasks and is worth installing just to have for it's functionality. A lot of root programs push the su binary, a Superuser.apk, and often times the busybox binary. Not all ROM's choose to include busybox but it's handy to have like I mentioned for it's functionality.
Cyanogenmod
Cyanogenmod is an aftermarket firmware distribution you can find more about it here. As for why is it famous it was one of the first well know custom ROM's and soon grew to include support for a vast amount of devices you can find more about the history of Cyanogenmod here. AOKP is another well know ROM that stands for Android Open Kang Project, it first came about when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was released you can learn more about AOKP here.
SuperUser
If your current ROM is missing a Superuser app you may install one from the Play Store, it does not matter which one you choose it is personnel preference but I would use either Chainfire's SuperSU app or Koush's Superuser app. Updating a pre-installed Superuser app to the latest Play Store version is fine. There are no consequences to installing one Superuser app and uninstalling another one it's a matter of personnel preference which one you want to use. Keep in mind if you uninstall one Superuser app and then install a different one it may ask you to update the su binary (Which it should ask you if you want to do that once you launch the app for the first time) before it will function properly.
If you have any other questions let me know I'll be happy to answer them or elaborate on anything that may still be unclear to you.
