[Q] CF-root "over" superoneclick - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yo.
A friend of mine rooted his sgs2 with superoneclick. He now wants to flash a custom rom but he can't since he is running stock recovery 3e. Question is if he can flash a correct cf-root via Odin on the already rooted device. A cf-root kernel includes a custom recovery, cwm, and this should then let him flash custom roms.
Am I on the right track here?

That's correct
Sent from my sgs2 running cm9 using xda app

Is it possible to install the custom recovery, CWM once you have already obtained root via Super One Click (On a SGS2)
I have the same issue as above, however someone has posted these instructions, wondering if it will work:
1. Use super one click (zergRush) to gain root
(now to get CWM without using Odin3)
At this point we are still using 3e recovery (can't get a backup)
The plan:
2. Download InitialCFRootFlasher (care of Chainfire) which is from His initial SGS2 root thread
3. Get the correct CF-Root kernel for my SGS2 from the above thread (NB I couldn't find my correct firmware)
I couldn't find a v5.0 for mine
Which is 2.6.35.7-I9100TDOKH1
PDA:KH1 PHONE:KG2 CSC:KH1
The closest I could find was this CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH1-v4.1-CWM4.zip from Another Chainfire thread
4. Extract the downloaded CF-Root kernel till you get a zIMAGE file.
5. Place the zImage file from the CF-Root kernel in the zImage folder from InitialRootFlasher
- Start "already-rooted.bat" and follow the instructions
From now I should have CWM Recovery and Manager now just like you would have if you used Odin3 with the same CF-Root from above?

Or shall I just CF-root it using the above KH1 file?
My only concern was the ability to 'unroot' my phone if required using the same procedure I used to root it (Super One Click).
My main objective right now is get a current backup of my phone as it is. Then try out the latest CM9 custom ROM
EDIT: Will this be the better CF-root for my phone?
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEU_KH4-v5.0-CWM5.zip
I was going to use
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH1-v4.1-CWM4.zip

I think if you want to unroot your kernel, just flash it with the stock kernel.

My main goal is to get a current backup of my existing ROM so I can restore to factory if I break anything.
So I take it I should use KH1 CF-Root ontop of what I have now?
Considering I can't even get a backup like it is now (e3 recovery)

If you want to get a backup of your setup as close as possible to stock, yeah, CFRoot it. From there, before you do anything else (install a custom rom, other apps, etc), do a Nandroid backup.
This will give you a backup which is basically stock save for the rooted kernel.

Cheers Mistah,
Using the KH1 above, or KH4? (Much difference between CWM4 and CWM5?)
What is the best app to backup my EFS before I attempt the CF-root of one of the above kernels?

No worries
Use Hellcat's kTool (search on here/Play Store) to backup your EFS. Keep a copy on your external SD card (if you have one), a copy on your PC and a copy on an external HD or CD/DVD if you're really paranoid

Yes very paranoid.. I noted your sig that's why I'll start with EFS, then I'll use CF-root and hope for the best
My model is the I9100T so apparently I need to flash the phone (modem?) back to support my 850MHz carrier here in NZ after applying the KH1
(I will only apply the PDA option in Odin3 so it shouldn't effect my KG2 phone setting right?)

You noted the EFS thing in my sig ? Good man
Yeah I've got an I9100T/850mhz carrier as well and the "T specific" modems tend to give the best performance, though you can certainly try out/use I9100 modems if you ever find the T modem you're using isn't working well. Yep that's right, if you only flash a kernel it won't affect anything else. Same with flashing *most* roms, your existing modem should remain.
Great to see you're planning this out well before you do it. Good job Post here again if you have any dramas.

Yeah, I've spent half the day reading various articles.. haha
Thought I was ok until I read about corrupting IMEI, and then the special modem differences we have down under. So that meant even more reading
I can apply CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH1-v4.1-CWM4.zip via Odin3 (PDA only) without changing anything else? This will enable CWM only (I already have root so that won't be anything new)

Kabayan,
Can you help me where I can download stock from for s2,,
I bought it here in taiwan.

Really ? Good Too many people on here don't do the research/prep you've done/are doing & end up with borked phones. Then wonder why.
Yep, if the KH1 kernel matches your existing one, use that. And yes, that will give you a rooted phone with nothing else changed (rom, modem) & you'll have CWM.

[Q] Big problem with ROMS

Hey,
Ive been searching for 6 hours now and i still haven't found the solution to my problem.
My problem:
Today i got my Samsung Galaxy S2, so i wanted to put a custom ROM on it using this guide: http://www.redmondpie.com/install-cm7-on-galaxy-s2-using-rom-manager-how-to-tutorial/.
Firstly i rooter my phone without a problem. After that i followed the guide. This was no problem untill i had to: 'Launch ROM Manager and tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and pick Samsung Galaxy S II from the list of compatible smartphones.' There was an error in recovery mode about verification.
After this i flashed my phone with clockworkMod-Recover to be able to put of verification. When i toggled it off i tried to update my phone to CM7 wich was on my sd card.
When i tried rebooting now it was stuck on loading screen with the well-known yelolow triangle.
I tried everything (including: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499 -> did everything perfectly). I tried to flash other stuff. But still same problem i wiped it a lot, still nothing.
I can acces download and recovery mode without any problems. i even flashed the phone to the stock kernel (Kernel_I9100XWKI4). so now i dont have a yellow triangle but still stuck at boot screen.
I am desperate and depressed that my expensive phone wont boot up. Can anyone please help me out i'm even willing to pay the one who helps me out.
Thanks in advance!
try flashing stock ROM from here

Tried this a lot, doesnt fix it.
1) Get the right CF Kernel from the Chainfire kernel thread in the Android Original Development Thread. Extract the zip to get a TAR and extract the TAR to get a z-image file. Also download the corresponding original stock kernel from the Intratech thread in the same section.
2) Flash the TAR in PDA using Odin. Do not click repartition. This lets you boot with with functional Root and CWM.
3) If you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, then load the z-image file into /sdcard. Reboot into download mode and use Odin to flash the stock kernel (again in the PDA without repartition). After that, go to the CWM app, choose flash kernel and locate the zimage and proceed.
NB: You can read Chainfire and Intratechs threads in case I was vague somewhere.
Installing CM
1) After all this, put the latest nightly into /sdcard
2) Boot into recovery.
3) Clear Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache (in advanced). Go to install Zip-->Choose Zip from SD card--> Choose the CM7 nightyl file.
4) Flash is twice i.e consecutively. The first time, it just takes like a second to flash, the second time will be the complete install. No idea why this happens or whether its been fixed now.
5) Reboot.
The next time, dont google for this type of Info. The XDA forums has everything you need and a good search engine too.
Let me know if you still have issues.
Cheers.
EDIT: RomManager works best on CM7 only. I suggest that you keep it that way. It does not work with the basic stock rooted CF Kernels as is mentioned on his thread.

I allready get stuck on the first thing, i flashed the CF kernel with Odin and after this he wont boot so i cant procede. This is my problem he just doesnt wanna boot.
I dont want any custom ROM's anymore i just want the default phone back. This is a disaster.
Did you choose the right CF Kernel. It has to be chosen to be inline with the Kernel version that came with your phone. As you've not managed to flash a modded kernel, you will still be on the same kernel that came along with you phone. You cant choose any CF Kernel that you like.
You've mentioned Kernel_I9100XWKI4. Is this the same that came with the phone or did you pick some random kernel?
Another option is to try that android recovery, but Im not familiar with it and its options.
I had the same issue as you when I was playing around with cutom kernels and CWM

Yes that is the original one (I9100XWKI4). I am also not familiar with android recovery.
Ok, if its KI4, then theres a Ki4 for Gingerbread 2.3.4 and another for 2.3.5. You have to choose the right one

I tried both, none worked :s
Then I think its best that you head over to Intratechs thread, a new firmware itself and flash it over. As you say KI4, download XWKI4 2.3.4, both the OXX multi CSC and the stock kernel and reflash your whole firmware as per the instructions in the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Also make sure that Samsung Kies is not running anywhere. Kill it in processes and do not let it boot in msconfig.

None required mate. If you are still interested in rooting, follow the instructions Id mentioned in my first post using the CF KI4 Kernel for 2.3.4 and you should be fine.
As an alternative custom rom to CM7, check out GingerMod, I can vouch for it.

[Q] How to Root BUKJ3 2.3.5

Hello guys,
Ive updated via kies to the latest firmwares from my provider - vodafone, i9100BUKJ3 2.3.5 and i've lost my root, how can i reroot the phone?
Thank you!
By using one of the methods you used before? [30/OCT][ROOTING/UNROOTING] Xperia 2011 Easy Rooting Toolkit [v1.0](zergRush Exploit) or [07.11.2011][CF-Root 5.0] KE*, KF*, KG*, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8, KJ1/2/3 - su+bb+CWM4/5 or another custom, pre-rooted kernel, or an insecure kernel to use with SuperOneClick.

Yes, you can use CF-Root kernel for XW_KJ3.
Or one of the other rooting methods.
P.S.: Have you ever read Intratech's official firmwares thread?

By the way is there a method to get rid of the yellow triangle and to reset the couter?

Yellow triangle --> flash a stock kernel.
Reset counter --> use a USB jig, assuming you have the "old" bootloader.

Just be sure you stick to I9100 ROMs. That includes avoiding I9100G ROMs. The I9100G is a variant that has completely different chipset, so firmwares are incompatible.
Roms are soo extensive. I have no idea where to start with the rights ones for my device/kernel. Is there like an app store thing for roms, i have seen one is it the kitchen. However its not available for the way i have rooted. Last thing i want to do on my first night is brick my phone and put it in the bin lol.

If by "the right ones for your device", you mean ones that work without bricking it, just make sure you use a firmware appropriate for your device. If you have an I9100, use any I9100 firmware - BUT make sure to AVOID I9100G firmwares. The G variant has a different chipset, so firmwares are NOT compatible between I9100 and I9100G.
But before you get started: you're rooted, right? How did you root? Do you have CWM recovery? If so, just take a back up of your phone. If you DON'T have CWM recovery, this is the first thing you should get before installing ANY ROM. CWM recovery will allow you to essentially take a backup of your entire phone in its current state, and give you a point to roll back to if something goes wrong.
Once backed up, just flash whatever firmware you want to try. (again, remembering what I said in the first paragraph) If it doesn't work out for you, or you don't like the ROM, then restore your backup. Simple as that.
Also, kernels are separate. Most (if not all) ROMs come with kernels, but you can flash a custom kernel after flashing a ROM. You just have to make sure the kernel supports the ROM type you have.

If it doesnt work out then my backup will just revert me back?
I want to root in order to change fonts, themes, just more control of my device to which i paid for.

Your instructions are ok. The fact you have a bootloop is because you need another ROM, checkROM v.4 for example wich works very good with ICS 1.9 from Vertumus. Always UNTHEME a ROM before flash a theme.

[Q] Need help with choosing the right method for root (etc)

Hey everyone!
So I have done just about all I can with the SGSII and have decided it is time to do some upgrades, ie root and eventually a custom ROM. The reason behind this is to remove bloat and customize to exactly how I want
I have updated the firmware once via Kies to v2.3.5 and here is a screenshot of the infos.
I am also using a UK 3 (Three) branded handset with the 3 bootscreen and a few unsavory apps that was preinstalled that I would rather not have there
I would like to use SpeedMod kernel which I believe is compatible with my phone and is available from here.
Now for the questions and I'm very sorry if you have heard all this before. It's just that this forum is HUGE and I have tried to gather the info required but I just need a steer in the right direction.
1) Do I flash the SpeedMod kernel via Odin in the same manner as described here in Chainfires thread under long instructions?
2) Is the linked page above for SpeedMod the correct version for my phone?
3) If so, great! If not, then what is the best method to flash and which is the correct kernel?
4) Also I'm under the impression that this is what will give me root, is that right?
5) This one is probably more down to personal opinion, but in your opinion, which is the best and most stable ROM with everything working? (If such a thing exists atm of course)
Many thanks for reading this post and once again I am sorry for the noob Q's, but I guess that is what defines me as a noob in this area

As for the ROM, hyperdroid. It's very very smooth, no bugs, amazing battery life.

Thanks for your reply! I think those videos are a bit dated now and there is better techniques out now. I have definitely noted down Hyperdroid, I also recall it being quite popular too
Thanks again!

Hey everyone!
5) This one is probably more down to personal opinion, but in your opinion, which is the best and most stable ROM with everything working? (If such a thing exists atm of course)
No such animal ever if their was then it would be a one rom forum .Plus devs change the rom all the time .Having tried every rom going the major difference is not speed or better battery life just theme .
Root and CWM gives you backup so you backup the custom rom you are using flash another dont like it clicky click back to old rom .
First rule backup EFS
Second rule backup
Third rule read and dont flash until you are comfortable with what you are doing .

Yes this the first Rule backup the EFS, you can use the HK-Tool its on the Market
Thanks for your replies guys but am I correct on how I install the speedmod kernel to get root? Or should I go with the full chainfire method?
Yes I agree that when it comes to roms and personal opinions its more theme orientated but I was trying to get at people's faves. Take a good curry for example, they come in many flavours but my fave is a hot madras, and which may be too hot for some or maybe not as flavoursome as some would like, I believe the same for roms , crap analogy but I tried ;-)
Thanks everyone.

You want to install speedmod so you follow the instructions in that post .

There is unfortunately (as far as I can see) no instructions for installation in that post
I think I may just go for CF, seems like the most popular.
Now to make some backups etc and read MOAR
Any more info that anyone can chip in is very appreciated.

With even more thanks to you jje, I have found this which was only a couple of links deep hehe
I have backed up my 300+ photos (the only personal stuff I'm really that bothered about because it contains pics of my son who is now 5 weeks old ) but all I can find to back up the EFS is for after root. I tried HC-KTool but that needs root access. Am I right in thinking that the first step is to root via the kernel and THEN make a backup?
Yes CWM and root .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Or if Speedmod kernel installs root just follow his instructions via ODIN .
Then backup EFS folder
Then In CWM app backup phone .

Thanks mate, I went ahead and flashed SpeedMod and I followed the guide to the letter and read up on so much, I'm now rooted
I have also made a backup of the EFS, here's the screenshot's 1 & 2 of backed up data and my kernel version. I used the KTool to do the backup.
Is there anything else I should consider before proceeding with flashing a ROM?
Many thanks, Rizur.
PS you da man JJEgan
EDIT: Oh and I need to do a backup with CWM I believe.
EDIT 2: backup successful via CWM

You are pretty much set, pick a rom and flash away, copy the EFS backup to your computer as well to be safe.
When you flash a new rom you will need to wipe /data aka app data (not sd card eg pics etc) So you may want to backup any game saves etc with titanium backup.
You shouldnt backup/restore system apps with titanium as it may/will cause problems.
As far as choosing a rom, I find hyperdroid to be good, villanrom to be good as long as you dont "need" the newest base, but you can try a few and see what you like.
Thanks mate
Having a big problem now I decided to go for CheckROM as my ROM of choice, I followed the instructions to wipe the device and to put the tar file on sdcard and flash via CWM. This went ok but the flashing took all of about a minute and half, prompted to reboot and now I'm stuck at the screen with the yellow triangle.
I had to pull the battery after about 45mins as this was the only way to turn the phone off. I did backup via CWM and I did backup the EFS with KTool but CWM is finding nothing to backup from
Please some kind soul, help me out with some advice
Flash back stock firmware should do the trick.

This happened with me once and I was a total noob back then. When you're stuck at that triangle, press the power button. If nothing happens, keep pressing it. Worked for me. Felt like such a prat waiting 30 mins for it to boot
The yellow triangle turns up when you root the phone and it wont effect your phone at all, will work just the same.
Hope I helped
I have now downloaded stock firmware from here, do I put that folder on sdcard or remove the .mdf file onto sdcard?
EDIT now I realise i need to perhaps install via Odin, in which field does this md5 go in?

Yeap you'll have to do it via Odin. Goes under PDA.

[Q] A noob needs some help.

Thanks for the easy rooting guide, I was able to successfully root my device. But upon reading about how to remove the pesky yellow triangle, I hit a dead end. It says I need an official firmware. I couldn't figure out what firmware I needed. The more I read, the more I got confused.
This is where I am at so far:
I have successfully rooted the phone, confirmed by Titanium Backup, by following this guide to the exact word, I have done nothing extra (besides a backup with CWM and freezing some bloatware with MyToolbox).
I am just trying to find the original firmware to get rid of the pesky yellow triangle, also preferably one I can use to get back to a 'vanilla' version of the phone if I ever have to take it back to the shop.
My phone details are:
Model Number: GT-I9100T
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband I9100TDVKF2
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I9100ZSKF4-CL280225 [email protected] #22
Build GINGERBREAD.DVKF4
I just want to get rid of the pesky yellow triangle and then update the Android to 2.3.6 or whatever is the latest and greatest version.
Thanks in advance for the help!
sallad08.
I gave you the answer to the secure/non-secure kernel question in the AU SGS2 thread :-|
To download stock firmware, either search Samfirmware.com or find/use a PC app called Checkfus which will enable you to download the latest firmware available for your phone/carrier/country. I've just had a look with Checkfus & KF4 is the latest available firmware for I9100T/Telstra, released 22/6/2011. To save mucking around on Samfirmware, you might as well use Checkfus. This will enable you to download a tarball/package you can flash in Odin following the instructions here should you ever need to go back to stock for whatever reason.
Edit to add - You can also flash non-carrier specific/'unbranded stock firmware rather than flash Telstra firmware. This won't have the Telstra 'bloatware'. Search Samfirmware for generic AU stock firmware.

Thanks, I didn't really understand what you meant in the previous reply but now I do, somewhat. I did find Check Fus about half an hour ago and I have downloaded the latest firmware (which is already on my phone). Now after rereading your post I understand this is what I have been looking for incase I need to reflash to go back to stock. Awesome.
How I am choosing a non-carrier specific/unbranded stock firmware on Samfirmware? Do I just look for my phone model (gt-i9100t)? Or am I looking for the same number I used when selecting CF-Root (KF4)?
For generic AU firmware, there isn't one specifically for I9100T, you'd simply look for I9100 & Australia. Makes no difference tho, the I9100T/I9100 are the same animal apart from differences in radio power output. This is why modems specifically for the I9100T tend to work best with it & I9100 modems don't seem to work so well. No difference in the firmware/kernel tho.

Could this method be tried for GT-I9100T Models ?
flash Chainfires CF-Root
http://download.chainfire.eu/23/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KF4-v4.0-CWM4.zip
and follow his instruction, which worked like a charm for me :
Getting rid of that pesky warning triangle during boot
It is definitely possible to remove that pesky warning triangle during boot when running a custom kernel, though you should be well aware that this method does NOT reset the custom kernel flash counter. The steps are not complicated, but they aren't easy either, so read well.
(1) Make sure you have CF-Root flashed (see the first post). You must have the "CWM Manager" app available.
(2) Make sure you have the same version of CF-Root extracted until you have the zImage file. (ZIP --> extract --> TAR --> extract --> zImage).
(3) Push the zImage file to /sdcard . It must still be called zImage !
(4) Find an original Samsung signed stock kernel (preferably from the same stock firmware you have, but it's not terribly important)
(5) Reboot into download mode (adb reboot download, or boot the device with home and volume-down pressed)
(6) Fire up ODIN, and flash the Samsung kernel
(7) Boot the device with the stock kernel. CWM Manager will still be available.
(8) Start CWM Manager, select Flash Kernel, and select the zImage from CF-Root you previously put on your SD-card. The kernel will flash and the device will reboot.
(9) You will now notice you no longer have the warning triangle during boot, but you are actually running CF-Root with all it's goodies!
(10) In the future, if you only use the Flash Kernel option inside CWM Manager instead of ODIN, the triangle will not return, neither will your flash counter increase. But keep in mind, that CWM Manager can only handle a direct "zImage" if you are NOT running a kernel with full busybox support (this is currently needed for flashing kernels out of .TAR and .ZIP files)
Yes. That's exactly the method. The OP was asking where he could get the secure kernel from in order to use this method to get rid of the warning triangle. Which I gave him the answer to in another thread.
Or he could use a jig (which is what I did because I couldn't be arsed fiddling around) as the poster above you suggested.

Is there any other way to decrypt the file from Fus Check? After I downloaded it, it fails to decrypt. The download stopped about 3 times before it finished failing a CRC check. I tried googling the file name and had no hits, and using Fus Check website just gives you a file name, not an option to download, or none that I could see?
Are you using the PC version or the phone app ?

I was using the PC version. I just tried redownloading it then and it worked without crashing with a CRC error during download, it decrypted fine. I have flashed it back on and got rid of the triangle, so it works thankfully! My super user icon is there but the privledges are gone too and I can't see CWM anywhere. If I was going to flash to the unbranded version without CWM I would get the triangle back wouldn't I? It isn't THAT big a deal just annoying really.
Flashing anything via CWM shouldn't add to your flash counter or make the boot triangle reappear.

Ahh because I did it with ODIN it removed it. Cool I think I am starting to understand what is happening now! I did just flash the unbranded/non carrier 2.3.6 onto my phone and that worked fine, but I still don't have CWM but if I flash the CF ROOT I will again, as I will have the triangle (hehe)!
So now I just need one of those jigs to reset my counter and remove the triangle and then I will be where I wanted to be at the beginning of all of this. Thank you again so much for all of your help, I was really nervous about doing this at first and it was all very confusing too. But I guess we all have to start somewhere...
Cheers.

Yeah if you flash a CFRoot kernel you'll get CWM/Recovery back. And yeah, a jig is the simplest way to get rid of the triangle. Messing around with flashing stock kernels then zImages of the CFRoot kernel is a pain in the arse.
Yep we do all have to start somewhere It gets easier once you've done it a few times and to be honest, having a 'difficult' experience at the beginning (I stuffed my first flashing attempt up big time/took me 2 days to fix) gives you that motivation to learn how to fix stuff for yourself. It certainly did for me.
Happy to help As you've seen, there's almost always someone around on here who can/will help provided you've done the groundwork & explain your problem clearly.

[Q] Need some assistance please - Rooting

Hi guys,
Firstly apologises in advance, I'm using my phone to browse so trying to navigate what I need to know.
I be using this guide to root, I read it several times and it makes sense for me.
Before I root though and this is a huge factor, is there anyway I can save all my current apps and restore them after flashing a new rom?. I know titantium backup does this but you need to be rooted to achieve this and before you root I understand you need to have a clean wipe for the phone which I haven't done yet since I'm hesistant reinstalling the apps all again 1 by 1.
Thanks

You can use that guide, sure. But I find CF-root to be even easier, as you don't need to use an outside application. Just flash the CF-root kernel for your build of android. Done.

Thanks, I'm still new to this trying to understand everything before rooting.
So backup efs?, what is it and does exactly.
I was under the impression that once I should pick the kernel closest in the about section?.
you will only be able to backup EFS after the rooting...
first Root with Cf-root then the first thing you do EFS back using Ktool (search on google play)
You'll be amazed how easy it is once you've done it (I did it a couple of weeks ago). It's all available right here.
Pay particular attention to this when choosing the kernel:
Listen closely, for I will say zis only once!
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:

Thanks UK, so CF root it shall be:
Instructions - ODIN (short)
- Flash CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar (from the attached zip) as PDA in ODIN, without repartition. Done.
Correct?
Then how does one flash a rom?.
Yes, you flash the TAR file in Odin.
Flashing ROMs comes after you have rooted. First, you put your desired ROM zip in the root of your internal sdcard. Then once you have installed a CF-Root kernel, your device will have ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery. You access this by holding Power+Home+Volume (Up) until your phone reboots into recovery mode. Then you simply follow the instructions to flash the ROM (read instructions from the developer and always backup).
^Well that's for custom ROMs. If you're talking stock Samsung ROMs, there are many guides around for installing those.

Ok makes sense.
So flash tar file with Odin giving me Root Access.
Grab the desired Rom, so for example MIUI then can you elaborate on the kernel. Because this is the one things that bothers me the most because I can't get my head around it.
From reading I need to get the kernel closest to the one on my about phone info correct?.
Yes that's right. As in the example, where the kernel version says I9100XXKG1, you find a similar one based on the KG1 kernel.
Ok all makes sense, thanks for all the help.

You should read the guides and faqs everything is posted .
EFS is a backup that allows you to restore your phones EFS folder that contains the IMEI for your phone . Its rare but possible that flashing may break IMEI leading to no network connection .

It's always a good idea to backup - search on the market for some of the best solutions. But honestly, I just winged it the first time I rooted with CF-Root, and went without backup. It's up to you.
But after you have rooted get kTool off the market and back up EFS, put it in the cloud or on your computer so you don't lose it.
Custom ROMs normally require a full data wipe first time flashing, so get titanium backup pro and backup all your apps from there.
