Did you read something to make you think Sony would leave the android tablet market?
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using Tapatalk

They will probably do a new tablet either late summer or before Xmas. I just hope they stick with Android and don't do anything stupid like use their own OS or even worse Windows 8.

non-concerned
I don't see this as a big concern.
The new IPad HD is simply an updating, and not a huge change. It is getting a better processor and HD screen. Stuff the IPad 2 should have had in the first place.
While I absolutely love my Sony "S" it has a few quirks I would like straightened out. It will be interesting to see what the next generation looks like and hopefully it will be more successful.

I was just wondering if the tablet s was Sony dipping their toes in the market, and if they consider it to be worthwhile continuing to develop a successor, or if they didn't sell that many and so will give tablets up as a bad job. I have no idea either way. As far as I can see, the problem Android tablets have is that there are so many different ones by different manufacturers, whereas the Ipad is made by only one company and seems to be the better integrated product overall. I don't know of any Android tablets with comparable specs that the new Ipad has?... And it seems that some developers have given up on Android altogether - Sky, for example have said that they aren't developing Sky Go for Android tablets, and the same with their Sky Sports Ipad App. If this is how major companies are thinking, then it's going to be tough to convince companies like Sony to carry on with trying to make a rival tablet.

Well that's the problem with all android products. Way too much choice, occasionally makes me wish I had an iPhone so I knew my phone wouldn't turn old in a month lol. But back to the main point I can't say whether Sony will or will not make a new tablet this year, however what with them releasing (IMO) some really nice phones it seems like they are trying to reassert themselves in the market, so its very possible they will. Better question is what will they upgrade/change ignoring processor and screen resolution

I think they're going to have to look closely at the form of the thing - I really like the way that the Tablet S looks and feels with it's wedge shape, but it was like they designed it and then struggled to think of how to design a case for it. Whereas the Ipad has the clip on cases where you open it and the thing turns itself on. The whole thing is integrated better somehow. It's little details like this that Sony has to get right if it's going to compete. And it may have to swallow it's pride and lower the price too. I'm sure the mindset of a lot of people will be "Why pay £399 for this Sony when I can have a proper Ipad for the same money?".

This article should provide some answers.
Looking forward to seeing what Sony has up their sleeves in the future.

Sounds positive.
But they do need to get companies like Sky on board, or what's the point? A tablet really is only as good as the apps that are available for it.
I just hope this is not some kind of VHS/Betamax (or blu-ray/hd-dvd to be more modern...) face-off where there will only be one winner. Because if that's the way it goes, then it will be Apple.

Im sure by the fact that they say they hit their sales expectations they understand just where they are in terms tablets. Really though just gonna have to give it time android is still evolving. And I kinda disagree that a tablet is only as good as the apps you can get. But I mostly use mine to read news, watch YouTube and listen to music so I can't say I know what every user does.

[DISCUSSION] Why did the Touchpad fail?

well, my order of 4 from cpw came today, and I was going to get rid of spares and keep one if I thought they were no good (compared to all the tablets I have (Ipads, galaxy tabs, transformer, wierd brands etc) for dev purposes btw). But, omg, webOs so far is quite nice, the device aint too bad either. So going to give 3 to friends and family and keep 1 to play with. Downloading SDK as I type and had a quick read.
So, after not minding the hardware at all, and thinking that as a 1st pass young tablet webos is probably better than androids attempt, add to the fact that the SDK from reading (not use) looks to be even better than android......
Some1 remind me again, why did this thing fail? Just price? if thats the case, £299 would have made this and ensuing development a killer? Or am I missing some big point here?
Cheers
Cost, immature software, lack of features, small developer ecosphere, late to market, tons of competition...

baring the last two, that true of any os that has just come to market
Shame me thinks
It fails because it is one of the most expensive, heaviest, thickest, and has the least features (no back camera, not way to connect USB/SD memory card...) and least tablet apps. Coming late in the game HP should have done a better job...no excuse. HP designed the tablet poorly...consumers are not stupid like them...very disappointed in in HP. Whoever design/engineer/market the Touchpad should be fired....such a waste of resources. Guess it's worth $99, at least they priced it correctly now.

It the nail right on the head, but I think it's mainly because of the price. Apple has some one figured out a way of brain washing people to buy everything they put out at any price. Other companies haven't figured it out so until they do they need to figure out how to get the cost down on tablets. Could imagine the frenzy over the Galaxy 10.1 if it would have been priced 199 or 299?
The HP tab fire sale proves there is a market for the Tab but just not at the price they are bouncing around.

Granted, but webOS didn't come to market with the Touchpad - it's been out for several years. It was a very buggy platform from all the reading I've done, and there was still a fair number of issues even after the last patch was released (just go look at PreCentral).

Price was probably the biggest factor. It was more expensive than most any other tablet for less capability and less compatibility. For example, licking it down to print only to HP printers or tether to HP/Palm phones? Ridiculous.
It's sort of amazing the position Apple is in now given how bad off they were in the late 80s and 90s. Really sucked being a Mac user back then (haven't been a Mac user since then though).

well, I agree (Being a 3D artist myself) that the design is a little off, but I do like the form factor of these (and obviously my iPad) and that factor suits my development plans for tablets more than my transformer or indeed any of my 10inch tablets.
I would be in heaven even with the weight and cribb design if this was an android unit with the same UI features etc at a £250 price point.
I personally think this device and OS had great potential for a tablet, but like you say, if the palm devices showed lots of buggs, maybe hp could have never sorted it with the team they had. Still say shame though
Pretty much failed because the general populations definition of a tablet is the iPad. Like others said, price and too many competitors. After a couple of days with my Touchpad, and some tweaking, I like it. I am impressed with webOS.
But I feel bad for the poor souls who bought this thing from the get-go for 500 bucks because performance wise it has it's hiccups for no reason. Notice some lag sometimes for no reason and delays when trying to do simple things. I feel like the auto rotate is too sensitive as well.

so to say it just sucks is not what the op is looking for.
The unit itself is amazing. I have been a die hard android fan with my hd2 but the ui of this tablet is extremely functional. Having multiple frames for apps makes this an amazing item for me. The keyboard is very easy to use and the quality of the item is A+. Like many others I would like the android market but webOS. Two big things for me is the memory expansion and no hdmi out but I will live. If I were to release this product I would say 299 and 399 would be fair.
I think the price is the only reason it failed. From using the xoom and iPad I find this, minus the features listed above, to be the better unit. $99 is an amazing deal for this great piece of machinary.
Here's one reason:
"Rubinstein wasn't exactly thrilled about the timing of the TouchPad's release, saying CEO Leo Apotheker had failed to make good on a public promise to ship the tablet only when it was "perfect."
Source
I think a bigger issue deals with consumer education about a new OS. The transition from an android phone to an android tablet or an iphone to an iPad is seamless WebOS phones had a miniscule market share. WebOS came to market late in the game. It took an incredible price on the TP to get consumers to take the leap to a new platform. Now that they are here they may like what they see.
It failed for one simple reason. The OS and apps weren't ready and weren't polished. I think the hardware is amazing, save for the volume rocker and the super thin "home" button and maybe the screen which apparently generates its own fingerprints and smudges out of thin air. The OS on the other hand has so much potential but they completely screwed it. If I had purchased this at anything over 150, which is what I paid for the 32gb, I would return it or sell it.
Take this one example. The browser doesn't load pages in the background. If you load a new card like you would a tab and return to the original browser card, the new one just sits there and does . . . nothing. Doesn't load or render the webpage. It just sits there like a bookmark to the site you wanted to load. I mean seriously? This is like iPad1 crap, which was solved in like a couple weeks with third party browsers. With 4 times the ram, for some reason WebOS doesn't find it necessary even without a single other app loaded on a fresh boot to actually load the card in the background. The way I browse the web is to load a trillion tabs and then go through them and read. That would be absolutely excruciating on the Touchpad.

over 150 ? Bit harsh I think. From a development perspective, software is never finished, you just get to a point where you either HAVE to release or it's ACCEPTABLE to release.

I dont actually think thats a representation of the average user. I maybe open 7 tabs on a pc, I sure they would have put in background loading eventually.

name a tablet product other than ipad (ios) that at release was like what you wanted, smooth out of the box, cause I cant think of one?
Honestly I don't think it failed because of the OS the majority of people out there are absolutely clueless as to what the difference android/ios and web OS brings when I recommend android phones to people nearly all of them haven't got a clue what I'm on about there more interested in if it can download apps. I personally think its more to do with marketing and more important price(why pay 399 for a unknown hp tablet when you can pay 399 for a apple ipad) people have to understand that the majority of consumers are near clueless about tech, ive gad so many people pick up android tabs asking if this is the ipad lol
I think you have to go way back to the palm pre for the answer. Great OS. Not a bad spec phone for the time. But Sprint was the exclusive carrier and didn't do jack to promote it. So everyone was seeing iPhone this and Droid that. No one was hearing about webOS until it was in the news that they were broke and hp was buying them. That's my opinion anyway. I have a palm pre(in a desk) have an evo (daily driver) and I hands down would take webOS on the evo hardware any day.
Everyone thinks this tablet has failed, if that's the case then why did a million people buy it? I know it's cheap compared to the iPad but with over a millions users this tablet should take off and be a big competitor with Apple. Maybe that was the intention all along, think how much HP saved on marketing, plus all the revenue they could get from some many users.
Give it a few months, Webos will be rocking the tablet world!

SONY Tablet S vs. Apple iPad 2

It's really hard to decide for me, which tablet i'm going to buy. What are your opinions?
Well if you're using it primarily for web browsing then it's the Sony all the way for me, as the apple doesn't support flash. If that's not important to you, well the apple has more apps and the iOS is nice and easy to use.
Depends entirely on what you plan to do. Both are top notch tablets, both are great for media consumption. The biggest advantage for Ipad is obviously sheer volume of apps, the biggest S Tabl advantage is the remote control and Playstation ability. Biggest negative for Ipad is no ability to expand it, limited ports etc.
I, like most/all people in the S forum will say the Sony.
The design is just brilliant. I was amazed at the volume of films available in Video Unlimited. And for £399 its pretty darn cheap.
Sent from my GT-I9100
If you own an android phone I would go for Sony.
I think it's also the design and the way you hold the tablet is just great.
They both have positive and negative points.
I only miss HDMI on this tablet. But streaming your media with DLNA works great and easy. It's awesome to really throw your video to your PC, PS3 even XBOX 360 and all other devices that work with it.
Currently Own:
IPad 2
Jetstream
HTC Flyer
Previously Owned:
Tablet S
I think that Sums it up ^^
The Ipad 2 is superior in almost every aspect. The only reason I could think of why u would grab the Tablet S over the Ipad 2 is if money is a concern or if you just plain hate Apple...
I believe that the Tablet S is an excellent tablet for those who have never owned a tablet.
Many of my friends who used it loved it (none of them have owned a tablet before).
However, when compared to the Jetstream it just lacks so much... The jetstream is smoother, faster, screen is nicer (imo). The Pen functionality is a huge bonus.
Compared to the Ipad2... Ipad2 has zero lag whereas the Tablet S has occasional lag, Tablet S has various other issues (read up on this forum) that the Ipad simply does not have. I have found absolutely nothing that the Tablet S does better then the Ipad2, whereas the Ipad2 does soooo many things better then the Tablet S.
Ofc... your in the Tablet S section so expect every1 to call me a troll, but this is my honest opinion; if you have used other tablets before, stay away from the Tablet S & go for the Ipad2.
TBH... I have currently ditched the Jetstream and the Ipad2 and instead use the Flyer simply because it is so portable!
Anyways GL with your purchase and I hope your happy with whatever you pick!
then tell them that I'm new and I had the iphone 2 with jailbrek and believe me you do not miss anything by that same flash that is not one.
the second is that if you stick a need to control it and believe me the jailbrek some applications can conger n the store besides Android also if you want free networks ipad 2 equal jailbrek need to part you can not do in the new that the only ipads vercion is, is the least 4.3.3 and can not lower the vercion I can not tell me that ode to the sony tablet but proven and if it was a good thing to stop me delivered on 15 November and believe me that what people say here is the same iPad tablet 2 and the sounds are not the iphone 2 has 512 of ram that is not nothing right and sony tablet has a gigue part has integrates a dual core but with nvidia ram it into pieces
I believe the iPad has better apps, but the Sony tablet offers a better overall experience.

Yes, I agree. Sony Tablet rear camera is 5MP with Exmor R, resolurion of screen is higher and better than ipad 2, it also offers more functions than any ipad out there.
Lets see
1. Ipad has more apps.
and thats all
Sony Tablet S
Better screen resolution .
DLNA. You can throw medi from your tablet directly to your laptop, desktop or any TV with dlna without cables.
Remote control for anything in your house.
Playstation games.
Way better design
Flash!!!!!
Ability to use a sd card, hell you can even use a usb flash disk.
I can go on but i think you got the idea.
Oh, one more thing... i have yet to find an app on ipad that is not on android. at least for my use.

Sky Go isn't on Android yet, although it is apparently coming "this winter".
The deciding factor for me though, as I said earlier, is the lack of Flash on the ipad. I think the ipad is briliiant, but I couldn't bring myself to spend £400 on something that won't give me the full internet, especially seeing as I use youtube and BBC F1 sites alot, which both need flash to work properly. So, Sony S for me!
Watch out for the fanboys. Do your homework and get what suits your needs. No tablet is the right fit for everyone. Don't believe for a moment that the iPad 2 its superior in every way to the tablet s. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. look at the tradeoffs and decide what features are more important to you and make your choice based on that.
Have both in the house and yeah the UI from the iPad is nicer but for allround possibilities the tablet s is much better.Have both sitting on the table side by side every morning but I always pick up the Sony first to do my internet stuff cause the ipad is just so weak in that area.Like it's been stated here they both have their advantages and weaknesses but I still prefer the Tablet S,but that's only my opinion.
BTW I got the ipad as a present cause there was no way I was going to buy one
You really need to decide for your self. Most of the popular iPad apps are available on Android too. I haven't had too much problem in that area.
Android tablets are still young and have fairly small market share. You need to consider if you want to be an early adopter and go throughs some of the growing pains. Many of the people here are developers and want to support the platform and help increase marketshare, so yeah, we want you to buy an android tablet. Sony is my current recommendation.
While Android tablet *can* offer a better browsing experience, it can also hinder it. Many sites see 'android' and assume you are on a phone and send you to a mobile site without asking or giving you the option for desktop. Switching browsers can fix this and more sites are checking for android tablets, but its still a bit of a nuisance for now.

Well, to be honest, that sounds like the reviewer is a total Android fanboy in that case. Prime does not beat 'ipad in all ways'. Even the biggest fanboys in this forum would not say that Prime is better than an iPad is in every way.
It's actually more like a preview
So what do you think of Benny Feilhaber?
I would. Only people who haven't owned or owned for very long would say that. ios is crazy locked down. There isn't much to do other than play games. Its like a prison rec yard with razor wire and little Steve jobs guards with whistles..

Android vs. iOS is like religion and politics - you just don't go there. I'd never buy an Apple product because I can't stand their Orwellian control over both the h/w and s/w. But, for people who like things simple and thought out for them, iOS is a safe bet. Also, look at the price of a used TF1 vs. an iPad1. Apple sells more iPads in a week than Asus is projecting for all of 2012. Whether you like Apple or not they've built up quite a little empire of loyal fans. I just bought my niece a 32GB iPad2 because Garage Band doesn't exist for Windows or Android. So there are examples of things you can do on iOS that you can't on other platforms.

All of this might/ should change with tegra 3 and ICS coming out, but we dont know what ipad3 will bring either.

iOS is essentially a glorified app launcher. Which fine as far as it goes, because iOS has lots of good apps. But I like being able to use my tablet without needing to launch apps, and there's quite a bit I can do with my Transformer right from the home screen (see recent emails, Tweets, Facebook updates, calendar events, tasks, etc., create Evernote notes, etc.).

Not so sure about the gaming verdict there. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the iPad supports game controllers. Also it seems that I'm able to get a lot of the iTunes paid apps free in the Android Market.

Funny how every thread here turns into an android vs ios discussion I think that just shows that both systems are very good and really competing. Best situation for us the users. They race each other with new features and lower prices and we profit!
Anyways it all comes down to personal preference. For me the Prime beats the iPad in all ways. But there are so many reasons why people get tablets and everyone is looking for something slightly different...
-There is the "i buy every apple product" guy
-There is the "i have all other products from apple so i buy my tablet from them as well" guy
-There's the "everything must be shiny and sparkling" guy (that obviously buys apple products)
-There's the "i would never buy an apple product" guy
-There's the "omg i love the keyboard dock idea on the prime" guy (me)
-There's the "i wont buy a tablet without full sized USB port somewhere" guy (me)
-There's the "i want to use my tablet for more than media consumption" guy (me)
-There's the "i dont want to jailbreak my device to be able to use it properly" guy (me)
and so on and on... I think in the end Apple will have about the same spot they have in the PC market now. Why? They've put those great ideas out there with the iphone and the ipad and no one else had any comparable products at the time. This situation is called "Monopoly". You get huge sales by that. Imagine there would be only one car manufactor...
But while other companies like ASUS improve this idea by adding new stuff, Apple somehow keeps to the original idea. So many gamers are screaming for a hardware control method. Apple says you have touchscreen its awesome. Having a keyboard dock and full sized ports is awesome but Apple says you have touchscreen and cloud thing - thats better. Etc.
i find that old people, women, and kids are more suited for ios. While its a "glorified shortcut screen" its all they really need. Oh yea, and non nerdy guys too.

I guess anyone who does not like/ want to spend time on customizing the OS would love the iOS experience. Similar to what happens with Mac vs. PC. You want to customize and be able to change everything that you could possibly think of but with the possibility of messing up your system, get a PC/Android. You want an out of box experience which is pretty much smooth while only safely letting you stay within the virtual walls the engineers developed, get an Apple.
Android tablets slowly chopping away iPad marketshare
Not sure if this is a correct place to post it, but I saw this article this morning

According to numbers, Android is slowly eroding Apple's hold on tablet market. And I believe numbers do not show Transformer Prime yet. Wonder how long until we see the same thing here that happened with phone market, when Android overtook iPhone.

iPhone hit back strongly last quarter though, impressive for one company to out-perform every other company out there put together. But yeah it is inevitable, Android will chip more of that market share away in upcoming years as long as companies produce great phones and tablets.
I cannot resist pointing out that quality control plays a huge role in it though. If Android phones and tablets become known for quality hardware and build wise as much as Android itself has become a very solid and stable operating system, this will happen quickly. But if the 'best Android tablet' launch, like that of TF201, is continuously full of problems in the future, then it's basically Android shooting itself in the foot.

Excellent points. I totally agree.

Not sure what to do

I know this question has come up before, but still looking for some opinions. I just returned a transformer prime that I purchased due to some dead pixels on the display and have been questioning what I should do.
With the time I had with the prime, I was impressed overall with the experience. The wireless was on the weak side, but I didn't have an issue using it anywhere in my house I needed to. With the upcoming 1080p displays, I am thinking I will wait to get another tablet as I would like to use it to read and I'm sure the higher resolution will make a big difference. I also know that other manufacturers will be releasing competitive devices, so I may not stick with ASUS depending on what else is out there, although I do like that it seems like they are on top of updates and bugfixes unlike some of the other companies.
I have also been considering looking at the next ipad when it is released. I am definitely an android fan, and haven't used ios much other than playing a bit on other people's iphones. I know that there isn't as much OS customization available for the device, but I am not sure if that should be a deciding factor. I know the ipad defninitely has more tablet specific apps and even though android does handle scaling any app up to tablet size, some of the games and apps aren't that great. It also seems like if a company is going to release an app or a game that it will definitely be available for ios and may or may not be for android. I don't really haven't figured out what my overall use of the tablet will be, but I would hate to limit myself because an app I want isn't available.
I'm not sure what everybody's thought is on this. I know that this is an android specific forum, but I'm also sure that a lot of people probably own or have used an ipad and know it's strengths and weaknesses.
I am in the same boat with you. I have been holding off for a while before getting a prime. I was planning on picking one up tomorrow. I do not support apple products, nor do they stick out to me. they make great stuff. But sense all the new UI with android devices is improving daily, its awesome. Both Acer and Levono are coming out with a Tegra 3 quad core powered tablet in the near future. I have been lurking these forums for a while doing my research and checking reveiws and watching issues. While i really want the transformer prime aside from any other tablet out. I feel that some of these issues weigh heavy in my decision..
In short. if you like the tablet alot, give it another shot. If you do not. Wait and see what happens soon.
I would say that if you don't need a tablet right now, and you don't need a tablet with a keyboard dock then wait until there is more selection before making a new purchase. There is no sense in buying something you are unsure about, or keeping something that you aren't completely happy with.
As for the iPad, I have used them and while they are very smooth I just wasn't impressed with the OS itself. It ran fine (better than Android in a lot of ways) and there are a lot of apps available for it that I wish were on Android but the overall experience just never got me all that excited about the device. All in all the iPad is great, though. It just wasn't for me.
One thing to consider if you are moving from Android to iOS is that you will have to buy or find replacements for any apps that you have come to rely on. For most Android apps you will be able to find a direct replacement in iOS, but it would be an added expense on top of the cost of the new hardware. Also you would lose out on most Google services, so if you have come to rely on those the transition might be a little rough. Google makes apps for iOS but they are no where near as nice as they are on Android.
Getting new apps will be a bit of a pain, but I would assume there is an equivalent ios app for everything that I rely on with my phone. The google apps may be a problem. I will have to take a look to see how they work and if they will suit my needs.
My UK Prime is due for delivery this weekend, but I'm still 50/50 whether to cancel or not.
However, when I'm on the 50% side to persue the purchase it's because I realise there are unlikely to be any other competing tablets out for at least 6 months. If competing tablets are announced in mid to late Feb, stock won't be here until June or July.
I plan on keeping my Prime for 12 months. By xmas time, the tablet market should have matured nicely with the next wave of technology in them, and I'll look to sell my Prime and upgrade.
But I'm not willing to wait 6 months for something similar or better to come out.
I want one now and the only two tablets I'd consider are the iPad 2.5 (due in March) and the Prime.

WSJ: Google to sell ASUS, Samsung tablets from its own online store

http://online.wsj.com/article_email...12043639469540-lMyQjAxMTAyMDIwOTEyNDkyWj.html
good find. I can only see this as being positive for Android. plus Google store will likely be stocked up. some tablets won't be hard to find anymore. I'm sure Google would keep their online supplies stocked up. then this will also tie into Google wallet accounts. purchases made easy on Google online store through Google wallet.
Assuming this comes true, it confirms the obvious, that the laissez faire vendor adoption method has failed. Google needed to be more hands-on. Hopefully it'll be the first step in a process, as by itself, it isn't enough to win market share.
Much as I would like to get a decent $199 tab, selling widgets at a loss (or break-even) is not a winning strategy. Goog will have to cook up some magic jelly beans, then grow a beanstalk and climb out of the low-rent district. Apple the Jolly Giant is waiting at the top.
Exciting times!

How can you say it's not a winning strategy? Razor blade manufacturers have been doing it for years--sell the razor at a loss, make it back big-time with the razors. Amazon is doing it with the Kindle, and I think Google could benefit significantly from doing it as well. They want to sell ads on mobile devices, and I'm sure they recognize that Apple would like to take this business away from them on iOS devices. And that's not to mention selling content via Google Play.
I think a subsidized tablet could help kick-start the Android tablet market in general. At the very least, it could convince developers that they should be investing in tablet-optimized apps, which is the one thing that's missing from the equation.
While this is good news and all, Google REALLY need to start trying to get developers into making good Android Tablet apps, we are getting close to an even keel on phone apps, but Android Tablet apps lag so far behind iPad it isnt even funny!

Google bought Motorola Mobility and would NEVER rely or use Asus to throw it's own name on their tablets. Google knows Asus tablets aren't up to par with quality and could never compete with Apple on quality. I'll buy a Google branded Moto tablet instantly cause it will be of high quality and defect free. I've used 3 ipad3's already and not one had ANY light bleed at all. Strangely every Asus tablet I've touched or used had some kind of light bleed. People do see the inferior products being used.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/29/nvidia-ceo-suggests-199-tegra-3-tablets-in-the-summer/
He's been saying that since last year... however, I also find it to be annoying.
Anyways, if Tegra 3 devices do hit $199 price, I can only imagine how crippled other aspects in the system specifications will look like.
Btw, this notion that if more "android tablets" are in the wild.. you will see more 3rd parties developing dedicated tablet apps due to the increased potential in profit/revenue.
However, if you look into smartphone market, it's not exactly true. You certainly see growth compared to when Android Market started, but if you compared to iOS app store... it's nothing to boast about considering that Android Smartphone (as a whole) leads the share in smartphone market over iPhone.
Simply put, Android users do not spend money on apps as much as iOS users. Until this TREND changes... you won't see 3rd parties developing unique tablets apps for Android. Btw, Google's approach with unified "app" between tablet & smartphone doesn't help either.

>How can you say it's not a winning strategy? Razor blade manufacturers have been doing it for years...Amazon is doing it with the Kindle, and I think Google could benefit significantly from doing it as well. They want to sell ads on mobile devices
It's not a winning strategy because the razor-blade model is not yet proven on tablets. I haven't seen Amazon break out the champagne for the loads of profit from selling things through the Fire. Amazon is in a much better position to monetize from its tablet because a) it has more stuff to sell, not just ads, and b) the Fire is intentionally limited to get all its contents exclusively from Amazon. A Goog tablet won't have the same luxury, not if it were to be "open" as prior Nexus devices.
Fundamentally, it's not a winning strategy because you can't base a platform around the idea of pushing ads/wares into the user's face. Amazon is selling a portable kiosk. Google is trying to sell an entire mobile platform, and the platform has to succeed on its own merit, ie have an intrinsic worth. The rumored $199 tablet can only be a barebone, stripped down unit. It cannot compete with the incumbent iPad, nor with the more functional Win8 tablets when those appear.
I'd agree that it's a necessary stop-gap action. Goog needs to get enough devices out there so devs would develop for it. It's the same as what RIM is doing with Playbook. A $199 tab is also needed not to compete with Amazon, but prevent it from hijacking the Android platform.
The only winning strategy has to be based on the user experience, which in turn depends on the OS. Simply put, HC wasn't good enough. Based on what I've seen here of the Prime's update travails, ICS is still a beta. Fully 5 months after launch, the main improvements in 4.0.4 changelog still have the words "faster" and "more stable" and "fixes" in them. Fine for enthusiasts, not so fine for Joe Blow.
You can make it good, or you can make it cheap. Android failed on the first, so it needed to resort to the second. But the long-term solution is still to make it good.
The more tablets they spew out, the more work it takes for devs to port/update apps for that specific tablet. When the TFP came out a bunch of games didn't work (Dead Space, Gameloft, etc) and they had to take time to port it. How big of the market share do you think the TFP represents 1%? Then tmw some ABCD tablet is gonna come out and they will have to port for that again. I read somewhere that interest for Android tab delopment is actually declining unlike the smartphone market. They better get their stuff together before W8 hits.

Same thing goes for accessories...

What Google could hopefully do is to subsidize them a bit. While we pay our 400-700€ for a tablet most of the "normal" consumer won't and most people I also won't recommend such an expensive device for the few things they would do with it.
Tablet market in general is still very small and even Apple has just a little tiny piece of it. To get it attractive for the "normal" users they have to be around 200€/$ max and Google hopefully can do that.

I dont think pricing them cheaper is gonna do a whole lot anymore. You have the iPad 2 setting the upper bar at 400 and the iPad 3 setting the absolute highest at 500 then you have the Fire setting the low bar at 200. All other tablets are stuck in the 300 area or is forced to compete with the iPad head on. And you bet 99% of consumers are gonna ask why they would want to pay more for an Android tab when they can get an iPad for cheaper.
The problem is that they need more devs on Android. How many times do we have to wait for iOS apps to hopefully be ported over. When does it ever happen the other way around?
Well there are great Android Apps who are not available for iOS. I'm always wondering why people look at iOS apps and want the exact same instead of looking what Android has to get the same job done. It's about getting the things done people want to do on their tablet - doesn't matter if the app is called a or b. Especially since ICS more and more Apps also have a native Tablet UI - thanks to the fragments. On the other side iOS still is like a stretched phone OS with it's 4x4(5) grid - even on a big tablet.
The new iPad doesn't sell well too. The sells of it are much worser than Apple seems to have expected and the workers in Foxconn got already "just" 4 day weeks and holiday because of the reduced iPad production. They also switched some production lines to other products because of the less demand in new iPads. Even the chinese sellers in blackmarket are sitting on their new iPads and can barely sell them.

And while maybe about 50% of people have a SmartPhone it's maybe less than 10% or 5% for tablets. We're still far away from a bit tablet boom. For most usecases the current ones were just too expensive - those are tablets for us...the geeks. Kindle Fire is just available in the US and not all want a tablet where you barely can see and feel the Android underneath it.
I still believe in a big success of a good 199$ Tablet from Google/ASUS. It's also the perfect price range for birthday gifts.

Good anecdotal piece. It's a bit too soon to determine iPad sales, but there are caution flags out (also anecdote-based).

>I still believe in a big success of a good 199$ Tablet from Google/ASUS.
Assuming a bit better specs than Fire, it should be a best-seller. By itself, it may well jump-start Android tab adoption/development, especially as iPad & Win8 won't be in this price range. Then again, Apple may well release the rumored $300 miniPad in 2H to put a choke hold on Android.
In that same vein, Acer & Co, masters of the cheap netbooks, may want to repeat their fortune with cheap Win8 tabs. The sticking point here is Win8's 1366x768 min res, which would preclude Win8 from cheap 7" units.
Going down the line, I can't imagine Amazon will sit still for Google to eat its lunch. We may well see a $149 Fire yet.
How low can they go?

Thanks for the shocking revelation, to me, on current Ipad sales. I love it..lol. seems like all the current issues with it and not really being an upgrade from ipad2 is hurting sales dramatically. Steve is rolling over in his grave over this latest Ipad. I hope this is the beginning of the downfall of apple. All that national
ITS LIKE THEY SAY, WHAT GOES UP, MUST COME DOWN. Apple has no where else to go but down. Seems like people realizing there are more choices in tablets other than Ipad.

If the iPad 3 isn't selling well then Android is selling at all. Because Apple sold 25% of the tablets Android ever sold in just 3 days. The lower workload and blackmarket sellers not being able to resell iPads could just be because Apple was better prepared compared to their iPad 2 launch (ie having preorders for the 3). Apple learned unlike ASUS did going from OG TF to the TFP.
You know news sites love to make controversies and because people will read anything related to Apple. Take the heat problem for example, there was all the controversy but then they found out that its not even that much hotter to other tablets.

so the tens of thousands of ipads throwing up Shutting down due to overheating is controversy? especially since its well documented on apple forums and ipadforums.net, which is the largest Ipad forums. it wasn't controversies, that's a real issue with the new Ipad which got national television coverage on it in less than a week of its launch. that's one of the main reasons Ipad sales have halted. along with ipad2 users seeing no real benefits into upgrading. everyone totes it not as a real upgrade. more comparable to b.s. iPhone in-between builds. next Ipad to release will be the true upgrade to ipad2. current latest release is more like the ipad2S.

I did not see where tens of thousands of iPads shutting down due to overheating happen. Look on the iPad 3 section on the iPadForums right now. How many threads do you see with people complaining about heat? I looked through 4 pages and the only thread I saw about heat was someone asking if there was indeed a heat problem and people replying that it does get a little warmer but nothing crazy. It is an electronic, it gets warm. My TFP got hot when I played an hour of Dungeon Defender. Does the iPad get hotter? Probably. Do I notice it? No.
And Apple is set to release once a year. It is their schedule that they will stick to. People can't expect Apple to make a major breakthrough like the iPhone and iPad every year. They will make huge breakthroughs but just not every year. A lot of Android devices get crappy upgrades between versions and no one cries about it. Maybe for once there could be a huge breakthrough from Android and Apple will follow that. Why must it always be the other way around?
Interesting article on Why the Google store selling tablets online would succeed.
