well, i have an GS2 rooted (android 2.3.4) and sim unlocked with Galaxy S Unlocker.
if i upgrade to ICS when its released, do i loose root?
if I loose root, SuperOneClick will still work if my GS2 is ICS or do i need to wait to an update of SUperOneClick (to supor GS2 with ICS) to root my device again?
well, those are my questions.
thanks in advance.

1) Of course you'll lose root if you go back to stock.
2) Ask whomever developed SuperOneClick if it will work with ICS.

Or you can wait for an ICS custom ROM ...
Hi,
I've rooted my S2 with CF-Root 4.1 and I'm using a 2.3.5 SamFirmware ROM.
Can I just update over KIES when ICS comes out? Will the Kernel be replaced and what Files will be erased?

If you have a rooted rom, if I remember well, Kies won't update your firmware... You have to use ODIN...
ok so just to make this 100% clear (i am a complete noob and i always make stupid questions, so flaming is accepted )
I have a Galaxy S2 with just rooted firmware (XWKJ1). I used an insecure version of this firmware to root the phone following the Odin/CF Root guide. Also I am not using any custom made rom like CM for example... If I upgrade my phone through Kies when the ICS update rolls out will I be able to complete the process succesfully?
Also from what I understand if the update procedure is completed succesfully I will lose root and will have to do the whole process all over again... Is there an insecure firmware matching the ICS firmware that will replace my old one?
Thanks in advance for your help...

You may get offered the ICS update via KIES only time will tell .

Unless the ICS firmware you upgrade to is already rooted, then yes. You will lose root.
Just try Resurrectio Remix v9.6 by westcrip. Its the best ics rom right now.

It was never guaranteed to be released worldwide on a single day anyways. Can you imagine the millions of I9100 users all trying to download the official ICS update via Kies at the same time? Their servers would have an aneurysm.
It would surely have been reposted for download though. Also, it was posted in various languages including English speaking Samsung sites.
I know that it is what it is and there's little point now, but I haven't had my ***** about it yet, except to my wife who is fairly confused about why this is such a disappointment for me.
Now I've had my little ***** attack about it not happening and will maintain it to this.
I dont understand why its such a big deal to get the update. Why not just flash a custom rom?

I've been squeamish after many GB ones had serious issues, for example we'd forgotten our camera when my second kid was born by cesarian and I had a sleep of death on the phone - was doing a Nandroid restore of stock 10 minutes prior to entering the operating room. It saved the day.
That said, I flashed a custom ROM right after that last post and it's been really impressive. I haven't yet found an issue with it. Everything seems to be working really well and the battery life might even be a little better than the GB ROM I was using though it's still to early to say.
I get annoyed with all the banners and the immediate back patting when there's a new RoM that hasn't even been tested, but just to answer the question some people might be asking about which one I was impressed with, it was Resurection Remix. It also happens, thogh, to be the first one I flashed that was a Samsung based ROM opposed to AOSP.
It is still annoying though. I suspect Samsung is merely manufacturing their own hype about this, intentionally, and that is irritating.

Hello,
3 weeks ago,I got a GT-19100G galaxy s2.Pretty happy with it,everything is great except for TW of course So I need advice at whether I should get the official ICS update when its released in march(also thinking about giving the LB leak a try) which will use TW as far as I know or root my phone and flash the CM9 and get andy's costum ICS.Andy's ICS looks pretty nice but I don't wanna root my phone specially that I never rooted any device before(my previous device was nokia n81 8gb LOL).Or maybe I should just wait for the official release and get some sort of ICS themes or something.I'm currently running Android 2.3.6 baseband I9100GDZKK1 and Kernel 2.6.35.7.So what ya think ?
root..flash CM9..after ICS offiaclly released..flash back stock rom and get OTA..easy right??
Would be easy if I knew what the hell is OTA
Edit:Oh,I googled it.Its over the air.Well, why would I root it if I will flash back stock ROM again in 2 weeks ?
Personal view would be wait for ICS then wait for the modders to mod the official release .

I was thinking about that too...I think I'll just do that But just to be on the safe side,is it completely safe to root my phone and install CM9 ? Bcuz my phone is new and if anything happened to it,I'll kill myself.
FYI, the i9100G is not the i9100, therefore ICS leaks and CM9 will not work in your phone. If you do flash CM9 or one of the leaks your phone will be damaged. The i9100G is sort of crippled ROM developement wise from the start due to it's lack of Exynos in favour of some old TI-OMAP. Your only choice is to wait for Samsung to released ICS for your phone.

IIRC, there is only one ROM available for your phone and that is SuperROM (Android 2.0.3). All other ROMs will brick your phone.
That's right. You can only install custom roms that are specifically written for the I9100G. And there aren't many of them. Someone on here said a couple of weeks ago that there are two (don't quote me on it tho).
If you flash a rom meant for any other SGS2 variant, as Xethor said, you run the risk of bricking your phone.

Damn...I had to get it since its the only S2 version available here. Why samsung ? Why would u make different versions of galaxy s2 ??!!! :/ Well I guess I'll just have to depend on launchers.I got Go launcher EX,launcher7 and ADWLauncher. If you by any chance know a nice ICS theme, can u give me the market link ?
At first I also didn't knew the difference between I9100 and I9100G. I bricked my phone by flashing one of the I9100 ROM. Then I figured it out, unbricked it again. And now i'm running SuperROM with ICS Domination v2.0 theme.
I9100G sucks big time, both in hardware and software.
Only four ROM's are available for 'G' variant:
SuperROM
Juffo ROM
Galaxyrom rc4
Darky ROM
Can't believe it took 6 replies for someone to point out to the OP that the G version is different to the International model. Lucky he didn't brick it. So glad the T version is the same except it requires its own modem.

Will AT&T GNotes running stock I717UCLA1 rooted by RoloRacer's method (no tripping of flash counter) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518962 get the official AT&T OTA ICS update when available? Or will these phones need to be unrooted to get the update?

generally, rooted phones do NOT get OTA updates, but since this hasn't been released yet, no one can answer your question.

Certainly!
I keep checking for an update daily, hoping that it will be available sometime this month. But, if it isn't here by the end of the month, I think that I will flash one of the custom ICS ROMs that are available.
If I decide to install a custom ICS ROM, will I need to first, unroot the device and then flash this new ROM? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664980

No. You will need to be rooted to get into CWM and load a ROM...if You dont have CWM installed, install it via Odin. Be aware though that this will trip the flash counter, but there are ways to remove that notification
na, just root your phone, and start flashing custom roms..
the dev's here will incorporate any changes/improvements from the official release into their base roms once it ACTUALLY comes out
there won't be anything unique in the "official" release that the dev's here won't be able to use, if its an improvement over what they are doing now..
I already have the phone rooted using the mashi root method listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518962 Being a NOOB in the Android world, I'm not sure what needs to be done next to be able to intall the ICS ROM.

ps sorry for the bad english im excited xD thanks in advance! im afraid i would brick it haha since it has ics and gb as baseband
If it already has ICS on it when you get it, then you just flash CM7 straight onto it. You won't need to go to GB.

well if its on ICS, best way to be safe is to use the Universal Rooting method,
then flash the CWMod.

then flash a base ROM.

Hallo everyone!
So since a week ago i'm a proud owner of Samsung Galaxy S2 (yay!).
It had Android 2.3.5 at the beginning so 2 days ago i've updated it to ICS (4.0.3). I've updated it via ODIN (since it couldn't find updates via KIES or by air) with a official ROM (if that's what it's called) from samfirmware.
Since then my phone heats up a lot more compared to 2.3.5 , i don't know how's that possible but i haven't installed any new apps or used the phone differently since the update. I know it's normal to heat up when playing games but even if i'm browsing the web it heats up a lot. I haven't this problem with 2.3.5
Any suggestions?
Go back to 2.3.5 and wait for JB.Or try custom rom.

So it's a common issue?
Hmm.. This is weird.. I'm having the same issue, but I'm having it with JellyBean ROMs.
For ICS the combination that works for me best is Cyanogenmod 9.1 and Siyah Kernel. If that still heats up, you might want to try some different modem and check out if any of them works for you. I think the stock XXKH3 modem helps.

As you might red above i'm a total newb to Android world atm , i just learned how to flash few days ago, i'm not going to mess with new modems etc. (for now). Do you guys think that if i upgrade to that leaked 4.1.2 , that might fix the problem? Also i didn't do factory reset after the upgrade to 4.0.3 because some other user from other forum told me that if i install the official 4.0.3 rom from Samsung - there's no need to do factory reset.
I would have done a factory reset, but thats just me.ICS was overheating my wifes phone, but it was the 4.0.4 thats worst.
If you are flashing modems, you should root first and backup your efs folder......and make a nand backup.

As i mentioned i won't be flashing modems and such. What would you suggest me to do from that point (aside from downgrading)?
You can only downgrade to GB.I detest ICS(rootbox was ok),so I went back to GB.
But now I use vanilla rootbox(JB) with dorimanx kernel.
Only problem Ive seen with this so far is the bloody volumes far too loud when I press keys(had to switch it off).
Anyway, whatever you do make sure you get rooted and backup your efs folder.
So i just upgraded to JB and we'll see how's it going.

I work in software; I differentiate between a leak and a release. "Released to testers" is not a release. We send many builds to testers before we have a release candidate.

Not sure why you're directing this question to me; is it because I said I work in software? That doesn't mean I work in developing software specifically for this device, or even for Samsung devices in general...
But if you're having issue with a leaked firmware, doesn't it make sense to go back to a released firmware?

yes, u can do So ma8
but why we prefer GB > ICS > JB is that ur installation goes smooth without any issue and also rooting ICS is much easier (since lot of option's to do so) rather with GB.
but the choice is urs
PS- regarding EMMC bug it comes only with the stock kernel of ICS 4.0.4, while ICS 4.0.3 is safe from the same(EMMC bug)

There's no STOCK FW at the moment. Just a leak for testing only. Just be patient.

Hi
First of all you need to root the phone. The best way to do that would be to flash cf-root compatible with your rom version. You can find exactly what your build is by checking settings > about phone
Find compatible cf-root kernel and put it in PDA in odin and flash... there are lot's of guides out there - won't be hard to find
Second, before you go further you need yoo updete your bootloader. So either flash ICS stock through odin (not recommended cause will unroot again) or flash bootloader through odin. Again there are proper guides for that...
Then you can upgrade to whatever you want...
Keep in mind that emmc cap bug does not exist in GB kernels. so you can use the CWM recovery in cf-root kernels for GB rather safely.
If you update to stock ICS then you need to keep an eye what kernel you're using to wipe data. Siyah and dorimanx are safe and I always use them.
Loads of roms out there, pure aosp, cm based, aokp based and the leaked sammy rom. Personally checked alot of each first three and also several versions of the leaked one... All good.
Word of edvice - do read more on those things. No matter how much expirience people who answer threads like that have, you'll never substitute your own knowledge and expirience.
Go on and root and enjoy the android world, mate. Best of luck
