[Q] What ROM should I choose for my Streak 5? - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an old streakdroid ROM atm and it sucks. Crashes all the time. I was looking at the wiki and a **** ton of ROM versions exist.
It seems from what I have read the the newer ROMs and versions of android actually run faster. Is this true?
What is the best ROM out now and what should I be concerned with? Will my device get banned from the Google Market? (Who cares I can update/install apps manually)
It has been a while since I have flashed. I downloaded the newest rom from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355878 but I do not see an update.pkg to update.
I know I should do a factory reset before reflashing but I have also heard that flashing from old versions causes problems.
Right now I am running 2.2.2 Android with the 2.6.32.9 DJ_Steve Kernel.
StreakDroid5 v1.9.4
I can put in the work but it seems some things have changed and I just want some direction before I spend the next week reading thread after thread to catch up to what is going on.
What ROM should I use with what mods?

You still have ALOT of reading to do, come back in a several days...
Most of us now are running a gingerbread variant but it has it bugs obviously so I'm begging with to not flash any of these until you have done a lot of reading so you won't be posting senseless threads on your problems... each ROM has it's issues very clearly in it's own threads by the devs so don't create a new thread with an old problem... I can't tell you which is the best because they are all pretty good, the best is up to you

I suggest [ROM] [INTL] [WIP] DSC v0.73
This is probably the best ROM out now. But you no longer update via an update.pkg - its been awhile You will need to install streakmod via fastboot then boot into streakmod to select your dsc.zip update. There are lots of details on how to do this on the DELL STREAK forum.
I wouldn't go with the just out cyogenmod ports - they are bugging and still a major work in progress.
Course this is my opinion but I have installed them all ...many times

cdzo72, i'm agree with you. really cannot tell which one is the best cause of all of them were in their own class and to compare among them is not a good thing to think of. As for the new user of streak like me, i think all of them were superb.. ...!!!

The Gingerbread ROM is not exactly stable, and should truly only be run by those more seasoned with tweaking their Streaks because of the several issues it has...
I would suggest you start out with something more stable like SimpleStreak or my personal favorite StreakDroid 1.9.0 (I had issues with SD 1.9.1). so you get the feel of a custom ROM.
BUT if you are serious about wanting Gingerbread, I STRONGLY suggest you dedicate the hours necessary to read through the ENTIRE thread, make note of it's issues and make note of how to solve them when you run across them, because you will run across them, learn the processes of using the terminal emulator, using fastboot commands, making sure your computer has the correct drivers installed for USB connections and fastboot flashing... you should be proficient in all that BEFORE even trying the stable ROMs because sooner or later you will have to flash something to your Streak

Thanks for the suggestions,
my streak now runs the latest official version 2.2... so i would like to upgrade it to 2.3.
I thought there was any easy and safe way to do so, as the official update...
i will wait for a more stable version and meanwhile i will read the posts and will try to learn something about this topic...
Thanks again!

Man no problem, I just wanted to make sure you didn't jump in there like a lot of people do and then come back having expected your Streak to be as stable as it is now... but as a note, there is no official kernel for Gingerbread for the Streak to my knowledge, and now that Dell has discontinued it there were probably never be. Maybe some superdev out there will be able to port IceCreamSandwich for us... we can be hopeful huh
Good luck with your Streak... and like I said, do LOTS and LOTS of reading, there are 3 or 4 amazing guides that explain how to do EVERYTHING, you just have to read them....
Also there are a couple youtube videos you can look at that show the process. one is custom rom installing and the other is flashing the dsp ..
I can't post live links so cut n paste...
Custom ROM
youtube.com/watch?v=3izgMselF-k&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
and DSP flashing..
youtube.com/watch?v=a5DEsHHNEp0
This will at least show you what is involved.
Its not hard but there are things that can go wrong so best to read around...

[Q] cm7 makes no sense

ok so here is my problem. i have been flashing roms on this phone for well over a year and this whoe cm7 thing makes no sense and not to mention everything is very vague.. i need clarification on a few things.
when i click the cm7 official thread and read the dl instructions it jsut says odin to stock and flash basically. Well last night i did that and and emmc doesnt mount or something... i dont know exactly except that i couldnt download all the google apps for failure of memory????/ and if i click music and pictures it doesnt show up but shows up fine when i go into files and play directly from emmc files.
so whats going on with that and did i mess somethign up?
second the cm7 direcrions for install or drastically different tahn than the wiki cm7 full update guide which tells me to be on uvkb5 firmware and instill overstock kernal and then do a bunch of stuff to get cm7 where as the official link here jsut says flash it ?
next if i have to full update guide using uvkb5... well i have got it rooted but its still 3e recovery... and i have yet to find a solid answer on how to get around that...
jsut basically i need clarification... THERE IS WAY TO MUCH UP IN THE AIR WITH THIS CM7...... is it really that damn complex to put on my phone?
u know what actualyl ill jsut update to miui since there is actually a freaking simpicated guide a few posts down
** this needs to be done with cm 7

Do you happen to be talking about my guide (which is a few posts down currently)? If so I'll be glad to help you with any steps on my guide, using the rom, or customizing MIUI to best suit your needs.
Furthermore, MIUI is a great rom and has brought life back into my Vibrant! MIUI is easily customizable, much more then CM7. And there are hundreds of themes for the custom firmware popping up everyday so I'm sure you'll be satisfied.
MIUI IS cm7.
Lol flashing cm7 is easy, just follow the xda thread guide... if your emmc is acting wierd, its probably because you have gb bootloaders whivh are not completely compatible with cm7.. if im right, youll have the same problem with miui... thats the best i can do

New Atrix, Need help to decide which Rom is the Best!

Hi, i just got my new AT&T Atrix 4G that i bought in amazon and i already unlocked it and rooted it using the method describe in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15930466
But now i cant decide which rom is the best. I'd like to try the official update from Motorola's site (cause i kind of like the motoblur thingy) which is a zip file and im use to update roms in other android phones from a zip file, but iv read some disturbing posts about ppl bricking their phones and id really don't want that happening to me
Questions:
1) Is it safe for me to download that update file from the Motorola site to use it and test it?
2) What is the best Stable and Fast rom ATM?
I really love cyanogen, my wife has a Motorola DEXT and i love how it looks and works, but iv also seen these other roms like the alien one and others in the forums, so far iv seen like 6 and i still dont know which one is the best.
Oh and i almost forgot, heres some relevant info about my phone:
System version: 4.1.83.MB860.ATT.en.US
Baseband version: N_01.77.15P
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-00007-g527fe10
Build number: OLYFR_U4_1.8.3
Great post bro

Oh that is a pretty damn nice post, but still remains one question. The post describe how to switch between different roms and official roms, but it doesn't say anything about switching from the official froyo 2.2.2 to the official Gingerbread 2.3.4
1) Don't install any official Motorola updates I'm not sure if this is a problem anymore but once you install the official 4.5.9.1 (Gingerbread) update from Motorola you can't downgrade without risking bricking your phone. Just skip any updates and install the rom of your choice.
2) If you like Motorola based gingerbread check out Aura or The Dark Side (Based off Aura + themed with some improvements). Alien and Homebase aren't being updated anymore so I wouldn't suggest them. Ninja is being updated soon so you might want to try that once it's updated as it's pretty out of date right now. There's also a lot of other roms out there but they aren't very popular.
If you like CM7 on your wife's phone then defiantly get it. I run it and I love it, so far the stable build doesn't have fingerprint support but the nightlies and past 2 weeklies have, they'll probably release a new stable release soon. Very fast, good battery life, lots of features, stable.
And as far as Kernels use faux123's or Clemsyn's (Based off faux123's with some/improvements). Whether you want overclocked or not is up to you, I use faux123's CM7 Kernel 0.2.2 1.0 Ghz as I don't notice a real world performance difference between 1.0 Ghz, and 1.3/1.45 Ghz and the battery life is better but it's all preference.
Also make sure you have Romracer's latest recovery.
Thank you very much a question tho, why Romracer's? i currently have CWM that got installed once i rooted my phone, and btw where do i find those nightlies?
oh and one more thing, i dont know if you notice but my Build number is OLYFR_U4_1.8.3 and the one in faux123's says [<{ ATT CyanogenMod 7 (ATT, INTL Unified) }>] for cyanogen, should i use that one regardless of my build number?

Rooting your phone does not install cwm.
Also the cyanogen kernel works only for the cyanogen rom

You find a thread a couple of posts down (if that's too difficult I can paste the link for you, we do not condone people getting tired by looking themselves..) about those nightlies.
A little advice (if I may): if your post doesn't include a modification to the phone's operating system / a Rom / a significant fix to something that a lot of people can apply on their phones AND /OR your post includes one or more questions then it should be in the Questions & Answers section of this forum.
Also check the noob guide in General, right at the top. All the good information you need is there.

If you want to play it safe or if you don't know much about flashing and don't want to brick your phone then stay stock or close to stock. Also if you want webtop and fingerprint scanner stay close to stock.....for me motoblur is very nice but it slows down the device alot and so I try to do without it.
I would recommend Home base ROM or CM7 beta2 but these might make you lose some features but if you can live without them you're going to like how smooth they are.
CM7 is available with working FP scanner -- install the latest weekly build! I've been on CM since the first beta back in September and I haven't looked back!
XDA doesn't allow "which ROM is best?" threads.

improved Rom

I just updated my vibrant from stock froyo to stock gb via kies factory upgrade.
Here are specifics as is: firmware 2.3.6 baseband t959VUVKJ6 kernel 2.6.35.7-t959VUVKJ6-CL694130 build GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
I went through hell today to root and unlock the sim of this phone as its my first day ever messing with android phones.
I was looking at the wiki for the t-959 roms, the "stable" one is barebones and the "cutting edge" one is CyanogenMod 7.2. Barebones pretty much hints you lose functionality and though the other is apparently great, it isn't "stable" and here and there you read a post here and there of someone having some kind of trouble with a feature that just might have worked with the factory rom.
I don't want to sacrifice factory functionality for a phone that looks good or is too modern for the vibrant to handle, I want a rom where I will have no issues whatsoever with things like mms, camera, ics, gps, wifi / 3g sip w & w/o bluetooth (w sipdroid), tethering, installing to sd, that has a promise of performing well for a good while and ideally for the rest of the life of the phone without having to possibly upgrade again.
It seems my best bet is to either just leave my phone as is or go with barebones and install apps as NEEDED, please help, you learn alot in the forum but also you run across soo many contradictions, alternatives and options that its too confusing and time consuming, really, I just want to do this once, quick and get it over with, bam bam bam, done and hopefully never have to mess with it again until it gets smashed or I loose it.
oh another thing, though this phone is rooted unless I insert an SD I can't browse ANY files, either via its ui or via usb... I have a captivate where I can see both sd internal and external via both ui and usb, I'm assuming its a rom issue that once I upgrade to any rom that will be solved.
Well cm7.2 is based on gingerbread which you said you have. It is pretty stable except for possible GPS and 911 issues. Cm9 is based on ICS, its also pretty stable but same possible issues. CM10 is based on jellybean, its in alpha build but considering its fairly stable except for same two issues. As far as looking at files, you need root browser or root explore. Just DL from market. I'm running Der Teufel's Hellybean cm10 ROM. Its really nice. But you said you want to set and forget....ICZen is a good ICS ROM. Its pretty stable and a lot more up to date than gingerbread.

Seeing that this is your first experience with Android, I would say that you need to make sure that you know what you are doing first before you start flashing anything. I am going to save you some serious heartache in just one minute.
First, Kies is notorious for HardBricking phones. Don't use it. You can use Odin or Heimdall to flash back to "stock" whenever you need to. Always good to do when flashing ROMs to have a clean base to start with. Google them and you will find what you need.
And now, here is where I am going to save you tons of trouble and the painstaking issues that WILL lie in your future. When I say that you need to know what you are doing before you start flashing, here is why. YOU DO NOT HAVE A VIBRANT, so don't flash any Vibrant ROMs to your phone. First we never got an official GB ROM, only Froyo. Second the builds that you put up there are to the SHG-T959V. That is the 4g version. Those ROMs won't work in the Vibrant and our ROMs won't work on theirs. Fortunately there is a forum for those and you will find whatever you need in there.
Good luck and be careful and above all read, read, read.
Hey wood, this is the second person I have seen stating they had stock GB on a vibrant. I thought it was weird. I figure if you are not sure what phone you have or what OS your running you shouldn't try to install custom ROM! Thanks for saving that guy!
drool on my chin from a mouth full of jellybeans
You survived kies. That is awesome. But hellybean is awesome.
Sent from my Jellied out Vibrant sandwich.

oh noes!

THe wiki for this with files neded seems to be mostly dead.
I took my tmo g s 4g and upated it with kies mini. it now has t959vuvkj6-cl694130 and I cannot find how to root but have been reading for daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays
Searching forums is cumbersome at best.
Does anyone know where accurate and fresh data is on how to root and use cm10 or any other help for non experts?
I guess I have to use a pc because there is crap info for mac

Thanks, unfortunately super one click is reported as a virus and also doesn't work on mac.
Personally, I would skip any ICS roms entirely. The risk of getting the EU bug (dead internal memory) isn't worth it. Go straight to JB.

No ROM would work properly on my Atrix

Hello there,
I tried almost every ROM out there, it flashes okay, when they start, I either have screen tearing, or keyboard ain't working or WIFI.
Even the ROM I used before which worked fine isn't working now.
The only ROM that worked is the leaked ICS ROM and the WIFI didn't work.
Tried another SD card still the same!
Help is very appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Why do you insist on running experimental ROMs?
Look for a stable ROM and use that.
Also next time read before you flash/ask.
Well, I've tried many ROMs and I still didn't get the result other people did!
And be sure I've tried everything and did reading for quite too long (I have this problem for over a week now) and now since I can't figure the solution out I'm running to those whose better at this stuff!
And the reason for going after 4.0+ is that ginger bread can't read Arabic properly!
I am not Ignorant nor dumb!
Thanks anyways

Thats was the main reason motorola gave up on updating atrix, too many differences across boards.
Have you tried the alternate kernels that people had posting all over the forums?
If so, and with no luck, then you fall into the worst minority, the one that simply can't run anything beyond leaked ICS.
Sorry, but it seems to be like that.

I've tried the one epinter posted for screen tearing! The latest! Didn't work for me!
I've looked for other one but no luck finding one :/
But why a ROM that worked before when I flash it the keyboard keeps crashing?! Its just weird!
Thank you my friend.
you probably arent wiping everything.
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe Dalvik cache (in advanced folder of CWM recovery, DO THIS)
flash epinter's rom. I use it as a daily driver and it is fantastic though im used to not having a working camera.
Flash is the only one that isn't working!
