Question About Firmware Before ICS - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What firmware will be upgraded from to go to ICS for Open Europe? Does anyone know by chance? I am on a custom rom, and want to go back to stock and be prepared for the firmware thats going to be updated to ICS. Does anyone have an Idea which version of the firmware it might be?

Not sure I understand your question.
You just want to use stock kernel with stock ROM, isn't it ?
So you'll just have to download all files from a thread on XDA. Indeed, there's a thread with all stock Roms, and you'll just take one for "Open Europe".
You'll still be able to root it with tools like those from ChainFire.
Sorry if it does not answer your question...

The question is, I want to go back to stock, but what is the stock rom that the new ICS is going to upgrade from? Without Odin. Does anyone know?

Sorry, my crystal ball is broken. XD
Seriously though, your best bet is any "open Europe" one. We can't know for sure which one will get the upgrade first.

Accord to the rumors it could be an Isareli operator to get update first. My bet is wait for our skillful ROM makers to have it ported to custom ROM

Upgrade will be from whatever the firmware version is on the phone providing its the original firmware .or a stock rom with the correct codes for your phone that match firmware on the server .
Simplest is to wipe phone and flash your saved original firmware .
Or any saved firmware that was able to upgrade in the past .

[Q] phone is rooted, am i still able to get updates?

I picked up a used i9100m today and was playing with it and realized i'm still on 2.3.3
the phone is rooted and unlocked, does this mean i can't update it officially? if not, i guess i have no choice but to install custom firmware? if this is the case can someone point me in the right direction? the only mod i know of is cyanogen. also is there a glossary of some sort around somewhere? i have no idea what "flash" "odin" "root" mean...

Ofc u have a choice, U can allways revert back to Pre-Root and update officially, but im not sure if u can do that rooted, and u can install custom firmware if u want, you really dont have to, if u want custom roms (android OS) i would recommed watching inside the SGS2 Android Dev. and if u want stock back u need to flash the stock firmwares: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
But if there is anything ur unsure about or somethings u did not understand about my english please send me an PM
Official updates suck! It takes a long long time before you will see there's an update available via Kies.... So I wouldn't bother. Best way to get latest firmware is Odin (or CWM)
Yep. Use Checkfus & you can flash the official firmware you get from it with Odin.

[Q] Flashing back to stock

Hey guys
Sorry for the noob question but I want to double check something before I accidentally brick my phone.
I rooted my phone and flashed the Resurrection Remix ICS 9.7 rom and have had a play with it for a few days and want to go back to stock.
It's using a custom kernel and obviously custom rom.
To flash it back to stock using Odin, how do I get a stock official ICS kernel for an official ICS rom (such as one that you download directly from the Samsung server using CheckFus)? Also does anyone know of a guide that specifies exactly how to do this?
Thanks
You can extract the kernel (zImage) from the rom tarball you download via Checkfus with any program that allows you to work with tars (IZarc, 7Zip, WinRar, etc). No guide necessary, easy as. Open the tar file with said program, find the zImage, extract it. Done.

Need ROM to roll back to
Just got a i9100 with 2.3.4:
PDA:I9100XWKH4
Phone/Baseband (modem): I9100XXKH3
CSC: I9100OXXKH2
I don't find this rom on the roms page, and I understand I need it to be on my PC ready to flash with Odin, in case by flash to 2.3.6 doesn't work out (that's the only way to roll back, right?)
Where can I find this rom?
Thanks!

Re-flash stock firmware

hello everyone.
I'm using andyx firmware v15 and taking my attention that battery dies too fast and phone feels lagging at times.
So i want to go back to the stock firmware and use a rooted stock firmware. but i have a couple of questions:
1) i dont really know which pda or country's firmware i have to use.bought my phone from poland and living in turkey now. can i find out which version the phone originally came with from the box or anywhere else?
if using any firmware wont matter, is there any particular one i should use? maybe getting the newest updates before the ones?
2) is the version 4.0.4 safe to use? my friend suggested me to use that one but i'm a little pissed off after reading the brick stories about it.
3) also someone else told me to flash stock firmware then go for the siyah kernel. whats the benefit for that?

1) there are no particular firmwares. Try out different firmwares on whatever suits you best. I suggest you go up for Gingerbread because of its stability and battery life. But if you want to be updated on the trending things, go for ICS.
2) i suggest you go for custom roms with 4.0.4 as a basis.
3) siyah kernel MAY be a suitable kernel for you, but then again, it could be different. Try out different kernels that best suits you
-Try the search button for further info so you could get a variety of comments from users. Happy flashing

Use CheckFus to find the latest firmware for your phone and flash it with ODIN.
To root your phone just do some reading. There are quite a few methods described here, some are easy, some are more complicated. In the end choose one that corresponds to your needs and skills.
Ive just done what you were asking for similar reasons. I went on to samfirmware site and picked latest and safest ROM. Then on to chainfires thread for the insecure kernel to root my S2. (thanks to chainfire) No a difficult task just read before flasing and make necessary back ups. All tbe best.

I'm rooted... How do I flash the latest OFFICIAL Samsung Jelly Bean ROM?

Hi,
I have my GS3 rooted, and its currently running a Custom ROM (FoxHound 0.7). What I want to do is move away from this and head back to the official Samsung stock ROM for extra stability.
I wasn't sure on:
a) Where to get the latest Jelly Bean releases for the UK i9300
b) How to go about flashing an official Stock ROM... Is it the same as flashing a Custom ROM, like through CWM??
c) Whether I will still be able to update OTA when new official update releases come out from Samsung?
Sorry for the questions but I've searched through a few threads and I can't seem to gather a definitive answer.
TIA

Can i know why did u root your GS3 in the first place if you planning to run stock rom.
Maybe try some custom roms which might gives you more benefit than stock rom.
Anyhow, if you still want to install stock rom, try finding it here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
Thanks. I'm downloading that now.
I rooted to try out different custom ROMS and also so that I could do things like hook up my PS3 control pad via Bluetooth but I've found the Custom ROMS I've tried (Foxhound, CM10, Omega, Paranoid Android, Resurrection Remix) all to be a bit flakey in different areas
This is the reason I want to go back to a Samsung Stock ROM, at least then I'll be on a completely stable platform and can still customise with a different launcher.
So do I flash this Samsung firmware in the normal way I would flash a Custom ROM?? Through ClockWorkMod recovery?? And will the official OTA updates still be available?

I found the easiest method to flash a stock ROM is MobildOdin till now as you directly can inject root (super user) and do not have to root later on again. Otherwise download your rom, and flash via Odin, after that flash again CF Root to get root.

After that, you can receive ota updates as usual...
OK thanks guys. I'm not too fussed about Root again right away, so I presume I'm heading into ODIN to flash the official Samsung Firmware then?
I've downloaded the latest JB Leak for the International variant (i9300), however I've just been reading that you can flash/install the OFFICIAL POLAND JB FIRMWARE to the phone and just change the language settings? Don't suppose you know how true this is do you?

Don't get the leak, get the officially released version DLIB. The languages are built in and you can CSC change if you so wish.
Can I ask what CSC Change is?!
Also, presumably I'm just installing through ODIN?

What I meant was... "What is CSC"
Is it some kind of Kernel/Radio??
CSC some specific settings in your country for network I think. You can change CSC for your country by this app but remember your device will be wiped.

yes, as said beforehand, CSC includes region specific settings whereas you can run the rom also without CSC (did this with CSC unknown for quite some time, to not get CSC unknown just flash the rom twice, to change the CSC you can use an app from the market designed to change CSCs easily).
Kernel/Radio is not included in the CSC, here you can flash, if you wish, any kernel suitable to your region of that gives you best reception.
Thanks all, looks like I'm up and running again with Stock.
Only thing in my SETTINGS then ABOUT PHONE then STATUS, my device status just says 'scanning'

[Q] Samsung galaxy s2 firmware problem

Hi there,
I have the galaxy s2 from about a year ago, bought it form Dubai. Anyways till now I still didn't get the jelly beans update 4.1.2 and I'm stuck with the 4.0.3. I'm starting to face some problems with my device and I think this is because bugs in the 4.0.3, the device over heats while charging or when I have my wifi or 3G on. I downloaded the "AOKP MR1 Milestone 1 ROM for Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 (Exynos)" along with "Gapps" but didn't install them yet:
The only problem is that in order to install the new rom I have to flash my device and root it and I'm not really happy with that. Is there a safe way to get the jelly beans update 4.1.2 without rooting my device. I tried the over the air update but it said no updates found, I also tried kies and still no luck. What can I do to get the new update without having to erase everything on my device.
Also can I take a backup copy of my ROM in case I format "flash" my device for any reason. I want to take a complete backup of everything on my phone including the unrooted original firmware 4.0.3 that it came with so that even if I install any other rom I can flash it and get back with my original one, is this possible.
Please help, looking forward for your repiles

I'm actually very new to xda, I've been searching for about 4 days now and currently I'm reading other similar threats on xda. But I don't really know where or what to search for. All I want to do is update my phone without flashing it, also if it's possible to take a backup copy of my original firmware please reference me where to start. Didn't mean to bother or bug anyone here, it's just that I'm very new to this
No hard feelings
You need to root to bk up what you have now mate. 4.0.4 is the brick bug firmware not 4.0.3 . Do you want to root your phone.? Do you want to put a custom rom or Samsung rom on your phone?
Just go to sammobile.com firmware page.

Thanks I'll check it out, what do I look for so I can make sure that it's compatible with my GT-I9100 device, or are they all compatible depending on which region I choose. Currently I'm in Egypt So whats the best firmware to download
Get whatever ROM you want.
Worst case, flash a new modem.
Sent from the little guy
Lsw is the new one. Uk base but as gastonw said it dont matter just download your modem you have now so you can restore it later "apriliam3 for them". To root get a dori ics kernel and flash that either with odin "tar" or in recovery "zip with sig" put on ext sd and update in stock recovery and that will give you root and cwm recovery when you have done that go back into recovery and do a nandroid bk up there. Get titanium back up in playstore and bk up your apps with. I link my contact's with google so they restore easily.
Just see chow to flash ROM's witch odin and choose ROM from Samsung development sub forum.
Thank you all for your replies,
I managed to root my device and advised by all of you, and I made backup using the cwm that was installed automatically after I successfully rooted it. In the backup folder that was created I noticed a file called "system.ext4.tar" is this the original android version that came with the phone because as I mentioned above I want to be on the safe side and have a backup of my original OS that came with the phone in case of anything went wrong then I can restore everything including the original current android version. Second step that I want to do is to flash my phone and install the jellybeans. I found two version version 4.1.2 which I know is compatible with the phone and version 4.2.2 but I'm not really sure if it's compatible or not. So what do you guys suggest I should install on my device
looking forward for your replies
