Messaging Problem - HTC EVO 3D

I've looked around for an answer, but I can't find it anywhere.
First of all, I have an HTC EVO 3D GSM.
I've had it for a few months now and noticed that the messaging app takes longer and longer to open messages.
The more texts there are, the longer it takes.
However, today the phone wouldn't open any threads, it would just get stuck on the "loading..." screen.
It's driving me insane cause I can't reply to any texts.
After that, all my contacts got wiped, no idea why. So I restored a v-card, however the contacts pictures didn't come back.
I'm considering doing a hard reset, but I really don't want to, because I've done it so many times with this phone. It's actually been causing me too many problems.
Does anybody know a fix to this texting problem? I'm willing to try anything, however I don't want to use a third party app for texting.
Should I just do a hard reset or will the problem come back after another month?
Thanks in advance.
TLDR. - I can't open messaging threads on the phone, it gets stuck on "Loading..."

How many messages were in your app before it started doing this? I find any time you get more than 1000 texts, it starts to run slow. At that point you should delete all your threads.
However, since you cant even get into it now, you may need to clear the data from the app in settings-apps-manage-messaging-clear data.

I would honestly do a factory reset. Or you could possibly have a malicious app on your phone that is causing those issues.
Evo3D.

Hate to bump this, but some people may find it useful.
The problem was that there were too many messages, so I used the app "SMS Backup and Restore."
If there's more than 500 messages, the app gets slow.
I had about 15000.. which explains why it kept freezing.
Thanks for the help.

[Q] Fix for gallery freeze?

I just recently got the vibrant and got the OTA the same day, the gallery freezes about half the time, and about half of the time that it freezes i have to pull the battery, i cant get to task manager or put the phone to sleep and wake it up.
I searched google and there are alot of links regarding it but i didnt find any that gave any ideas to fix it.
I searched this forum and nothing came up. Anyway, I have a class 6 card, the gallery on my nexus is very quick and has never frozen, so it is definitely the phone.
In my experience with the g1, MT3g, N1 and now this vibrant, any time ive received an OTA it has come with costs, it always brings fixes and features but also causes new problems, large and small. So I dont doubt what I found while searching, that the gallery issue is a result of the recent OTA for the GPS fix. Anyway, its kind of silly that this awesome, technologically advanced device freezes when you open up one of the native apps. But can we do anything about it? And if not, is it likely that Samsung will address it in another OTA? thanks
edit: ive also just recently had my phone just turn off every day or so, and it wont power back on until i pull the battery. Maybe these 2 issues mean i have a defective device? Or is this par for the course with the tmobile galaxy s?
Overclock your phone to only run at 800-1000MHz. It completely solved this for me, 400-1000MHz still hiccups.
thank you, yet another reason to root i suppose...
So no way to fix that with stock phone? =(

That is odd, I've never had my gallery freeze or my phone reboot... Are you sure you don't have some rogue app? Perhaps you should factory reset and start fresh? Do you have any "junk" apps on your phone (stupid apps)?
I had a freeze on opening gallery right after the JI6 was released. I think it was trying to recreate the thumbnails from scratch and download pics from my Picasa acct.
Happened one time only and I actually had to pull the battery since it went unresponsive. Never had a problem after that.
~SB
perhaps unmount and remount the INTERNAL memory card. I've done this before just because I saw it as a suggestion and it recreated my gallery.
I having the same issue. I am ready to delete it and use a different app. Is that possible?

If you're rooted you can probably remove it.
I have tried factory reset so I don't think its a rogue app. I got the ota the day I got the phone so I can't compare before and after. If some people aren't having the issue period maybe a warranty replacement would resolve it. Of course, if we do end up getting froyo maybe that's something that will improve. Love the phone either way, I just get fed up with stuff like gallery freeze, random reboot, GPS issues, etc... stuff that i would think shouldn't get past product testing.
OP, this is discussed at the thread below. (use the search next time)
You are not the only one having this issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805784
Quick Summary:
- Even with the removable card blank, the Gallery still have the same issues.
- I did a complete wipe and still have the same issues.
- I cleared data through System Settings which recreated thumbnails and other data, still have the same issues.

Wow i am so sick of reading some loser tell somebody to "search next time". You'll be so very relieved to know that I actually did search, and all i found out is that you dont have any friends. But honestly I did find your thread, however it didnt seem to me to be on point with what i wanted to ask specifically. Your post says that "watchdog" told you your gallery is a "resource hog" and that you have to kill it. I dont know what watchdog is, nothing told me anything i just cant get into my gallery app very often, so that didnt seem applicable. Also, i got ji6 the day i got my phone so putting the gallery issue in the context you did ("since ji6 update") didnt mean anything to me, i dont anything about this phone pre-ji6 update. All I know is that my gallery app sucks, your thread was a bit technical for me to be able to apply to my particular issue
Anyway, now my gallery freezes every single time i initially try to open it, i have had to pull the battery 6 times in a row, it works after the pull. This has been my favorite android phone (of 4) but now i just want to set it on fire and run over it with my car. I guess Samsung and Android arent interested in making their $600 products work, does anybody know how i can fix my phone so that it does what it is supposed to? Also im not rooted which i assume probably makes it impossible for me to fix? thanks for any help.

Speeding up your phone

My phone was starting to get extremely laggy at times. I had thousands of text messages, so I deleted them all (it took hours). And now my phone is fast as hell. Not sure if this has been said before, but it might as well be repeated because I was getting really frustrated and didn't realize storing texts could slow my phone down that much.

And call logs too.
BTW, there is a free market app for deleting text messages in groups called "Delete Old Messages" - snappy name, eh? You can tell it to "delete everything older than 60 days", 30 days, etc. It works pretty well, even on stock Sense phones that are choked with text messages. If you have thousands and thousands of them it will go slowly, but in an unattended fashion - that's way better than deleting them thread-by-thread. It also has a progress bar so you can tell whether it is making any headway.

automatically resend failed SMS?

A family member has an android phone, and bad signal where they live, so a lot of outgoing SMS messages end up failing.
To my dismay I find out, basic functionality like, continuing to retry, like my old motorola did 10 years ago, isn't included in Android!
I searched and searched for an app to correct this, but I could only find ONE and it was paid and only had a handful of reviews so I don't really want to recommend it.
Surely other people have this problem, there should be more choices, shouldn't there?
Can anyone point out some apps to get around this?
thanks
I also live in a poor signal area and suffer this problem. It's annoying having to go back to the message, click on it etc to re-send. Like you I can't believe there isn't a simple app to do this, or rather it should be built-in. I have a HTC Legend. It's my first Android, and the first phone I've ever had that doesn't re-send failed messages.
Are there any apps that let you manually resent an SMS that failed?
Edit: I found that Go SMS Pro did.
I also saw a couple that claimed to automatically resend but I can't remember the names. You should search the market again.
I've found an app that does this:
CrowdSMS
That proves it can be done, but the app is mostly useless: it doesn't replace your stock SMS app because it doesn't display or show replies. All it does it send texts, then you have to go back to your standard app to read any replies. It sucks. The amount of timewasting and frustration I've experienced because android wont do this automatically is bonkers.
Galaxy S8/Others -Resend Messages - Frustratingly..... EASY !
It's so ridiculously simple, yet so frustratingly difficult to figure out ! ! !
Instead of holding your finger on the MESSAGE that failed, hold your finger on the EXCLAMATION MARK ! ! !
Then the "Resend" option magically appears.
Pulled my hair out for several hours until figuring it out !!!

Have fun, everybody!

[Q] X2 freezing of apps/text problem

Ok guys I finally got around to rooting and freezing some apps last night on my X2. However, now I'm having texting problems. They seem to go out fine but they rarely come in. Also, I sometimes get a FC error saying the application Text Messaging ( process com.motorola.conversations has stopped unexpectedly.
Also, when texts do come in about 75% of the time I get two of the same text. This may be a chompsms thing since it was doing this before I rooted.
The list I used can found by googling "X2 freeze app list" and it's on androidcentral. (i can't post links, sorry)
Can you guys help sort this out? Thanks!
I've looked at the list and its sound. None of those apps should have caused the issue you are experiencing. You mentioned a 3rd party messaging app? Do you still have the stock messaging app?
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
Yes I sure do. I haven't removed anything, I've only frozen apps. I went halfway through the list and just froze a few at a time but stillgot the random FC's. I'm not sure what to do now..
I would unfreeze everything and see if you still get fcs. If you do it might be your third party app. If not then freeze just Verizon apps and freeze the rest one at a time, that way you can discover the problem by process of elimination. I personally think the third party app is causing the problem but hey I could be wrong.
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
If I don't freeze anything then I don't get any fc's or problems to speak of. But that kind of defeats the purpose of buying Titanium Pro and the phone is much quicker when I had a bunch of the bloat frozen. I'll spend some more time freezing apps slowly but the problem is that the fc's don't happen happen every time even with the same list of frozen apps so that makes narrowing it down very difficult. If you have any great ideas in the meantime let me know, thanks!
Sure thing I will keep it in mind
Sent from my DROID X2 using xda premium
My frozen list without FCs in any stock apps:
Amazon MP3
Amazon Kindle
All other preloaded apps (NFS Shift, Let's Golf, etc.)
android-syncservice-app (related to Backup Assistant)
BackupAssistanceClient.apk
blur_flickr.apk
blur_lastfm.apk
blur_linkedin.apk
blur_myspace.apk
blur_orkut.apk
blur_photobucket.apk
blur_skyrock.apk
blur_twitter.apk
BookmarksWidget.apk
BooksPhone.apk (Google Books)
BuaContactAdapter.apk (Backup Assistant Contact page)
Cardock2.apk (do not freeze if you use a car dock)
DeviceStatistics.apk (polls various systems and stores statistical data)
Dock.apk*
DockService.apk*
* These apps are also required for HDMI mirroring; keep ro.hdmi.mirror.enable=false in the build.prop as it is enabled via hotplugging
HelpCenter.apk
IMPresence.apk
MessagesWidget.apk
MyVerizon.apk
PerformanceManager.apk (this will cause persistent FCs until battery pull; on restart, the system will remove data related to this app)
Preloaded.apk (preloaded contacts)
Protips.apk
QuickContactWidget.apk
Quickoffice.apk
QuickSMS.apk
RichLocation.apk
Skype_mobile_live.apk (use Market version instead)
Slackerradio.apk
SpellingCheckService.apk (I'm a good speller and hate this crap)
SuggestionsProvider.apk
SuggestionsRuleCheckerCore.apk
SuggestionsServiceScheduler.apk
-- Freezing these will alleviate a lot of the lag experienced with the stock ROM; adding build.prop optimizations will complement this
ToggleWidgets.apk
Vcast.apk
VcastMusic.apk
VcastVideo.apk
vnav_DROIDX2... (VZ Navigator)
Vsuiteapp.apk
VVM.apk
VZWIM.apk
VZWInstaller.apk
WeatherWidget.apk
You can freeze the datacollection APKs, but just know that you won't have any battery statistics and some data push features won't work either. If you freeze datacollection without freezing the 3 Suggestions APKs, you'll get a force close on the RuleChecker at startup.
I kept the social stuff mainly because the stock ROM doesn't integrate the Facebook app like stock Android, so in order to have your Facebook contacts sync'd with your phone contacts, you need the blur_facebook.apk authenticator, and to keep the status updates intact when receiving a phone call from a contact with Facebook data, you need some of the social apps (mainly friendfeed.apk). I disable the social messaging notifications from the Messaging app in the launcher, as the official Facebook app provides notifications, and I don't need two.
If you don't care about that stuff, just remember that the stock ROM expects many of the authenticators to be there, mainly Facebook since stock Android also links with Facebook. You may get force closes when trying to open or edit a contact, or when text messaging contacts.
Here are the APKs that will cause FCs in the contacts area (opening or editing a contact):
blur_activesync.apk
blur_email.apk
blur_facebook.apk
blur_yahoo.apk
I kept blur_picasa and blur_youtube as I wanted these sync'd in my gallery.
blur_xxx are authenticators (used in the Accounts page)
Blurxxx are actual programs
Sorry about the length, but some things need to be explained so everyone can understand these things.
Thanks for the very long and detailed post Jason. I'm also trying to get my extended battery calibrated but the Battery Calibrator app doesn't seem to be working.
I will definitely get to work on that app list but with just those few that I had listed I wasn't able to get into my contacts without a fc. I don't see how everyone else is doing all these things so easily but I'm struggling. Is it possible to have a bad root or something?
I didn't read all of Jason's post, so forgive me if I repeat something, but I use Chomp and have run into something like this, but only if I freeze the default messaging application. If I freeze it, I can send text from Chomp, but not receive them. Unfrozen, I can send and receive fine. As much as I'd enjoy freezing the default app, I've just disabled the notifications from it and hidden it from view. I know I was able to freeze it without issue when I first got the phone (back on FroYo), but, since updating to GB, it causes issues.
I've seen problems when my mother sends me a text where it doubles the text, we are both in VZW and the text itself is doubled on her end, so could it be VZW?

Forgive me if mentioned or answered I didn't read...just saw this while at work
did u happen to freeze email engine or authentication?
That will mess up texts
I can't remember now for sure but I think I froze Corporate Sync Authenticator. Would that affect texts? I need to get some more time to play around with this but it's so darn frustrating, I thought this would be pretty straight forward. I also still can't get my extended battery calibrated. I get the blinking red-light after about four hours off the charger

Our phone will NEVER read an extended battery correctly
no matter how many times u "calibrate" it.
You gonna want to use a battery widget and keep an eye on the voltage left.
I believe around 3700 is pretty much dead and u should recharge.
Corporate email may have had something to do with that text issue.
It sounds more likely that it is the third.party message app giving u issues.
I know when I used go sms and I froze stock message app I entered the APN and SMSC #'s or something like that manually ((I forget exactly what I entered...but I had found what needed to be entered by digging around in root explorer somewhere)) for it to pull messages and send correctly....
good luck...
If I have time later ill browse around and see if I can locate what I did before...

Yeah I have had mine go lower than 3700
I meant that when it starts to go under 3700 it seems to drop faster also
so its a good idea to charge up when u get under 3700 since its a BAD idea to let a Li-on battery drain completely....they work better and last longer if u start charging when it gets to around 15%...
Thanks for clarification motcher
Thanks for the input guys. Unfortunately I just can't seem to freeze anything without getting force closes. So I guess my root was all for not :/ boo.
Is there a specific battery widget that you would recommend? Or will any do?
When i first got my X2 I had a problem with sending double texts and not being able to open a thread once it had 100+ mesages in it. I would have to delete the thread for it to be corrected. I rooted the phone and tried freezing and unfreezing a bunch of apps and it still gave me problems. Both when i was stock with very few apps and rooted. But when i flashed minimal x it seemed to quit. Ive been running Eclipse and now CM7 and havent had anymore issues. Btw the problem with the text wasnt just one phone. This is my second X2 and both had it till I put a rom on it. Im sure there was something simple I missed but I still dont know what.

take a stroll thru booked's sticky in development section to see what's available
Yeah I saw a lot of people raving about Eclipse. I was going to install that but for some reason while I was reading up on how do it I got scared off. Convince me it's easy
How long until the new rom comes out? Is it ICS?

[Q] Slow Droid.

I'm new to this forum so I really have no idea what I'm doing. And I'm not crazy smart with my phone. I have a Droid Eris and it's super slow. Everything runs slow even when no applications are open. I dont have a lot of apps open because I have the task killer. I got rid of all my texts too and deleted a few apps. When I go to call someone, it's delayed for about two minutes and finally calls. I also have problems with text messages, sometimes when I go to text back I'll type but nothing will show up in the box where I'm typing. I was reading about roots and such, but I have no idea how to go about doing this or changing everything so it can be faster. I need some serious step by step information as I'm not familiar with all the terms and what everything means. I've seen a few posts about this but don't understand it at all. Please help!
These phones are not fast period lol my fiance uses one and i rooted and flashed many roms to it and it still has a lag....shes running cm7 and its better than the stock rom but still laggy....even on froyo its laggy but guess that what we get using a 3+ year old phone

Is your phone rooted or unrooted? If rooted what ROM are you running?
Either way, when's the last time you deleted a bunch of old text messages? I think I've read that when you have a buildup of a lot of old text (and especially MMS) messages, it can slow your phone down.
If all else fails and you're running the stock (unrooted) ROM, you could try a Factory Reset. The phone will be just like when it was new, so you should back up your apps that you have installed, and their data, if you feel you must, then after the Factory Reset only add things back a little at a time. I find that once your phone has less than 40MB of RAM left on a regular basis, that it really causes it to slow down tremendously.
