Good phone? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi, I want to know what YOU like with this phone. Gaming, HDMI, Design? Tell me.
Sent from my R800i using xda premium

My likes:
Gaming (I'm not a hardcore mobile gamer, but i play the addictive ones ) : Just...amazing everything is soo smooth, and I get no skipping or slugishness
Sound quality: I think its absolutely fantastic for a phone
Design: I'm a sucker for a nice looking phone...and this phone ticks all the boxes for me. It's sleek, modern, and it feels good in your hand.
Also...
The phone is blazing fast in general and the screen is beautiful, just beautiful to me. I came from an X10 and the colors when comparing the two...well, it just doesn't compare.
This is my second day with the phone, so I haven't tested all of the bells and whistles yet, but this is just the few things that won me over.
For my needs and expectations: It's my perfect phone . Sure the reviews can say some bad things, but yea, for me, it's just perfect

Battery life?
Sent from my R800i using xda premium

I can't quite comment on the battery life yet, I have been connecting and disconnecting it from my PC quite a bit since I got it (trying to get old apps back etc etc..), so I can't really make a fair judgement unfortunately :/.

First day 16 hours and have done recharge so will see today
First impression best phone in years love it
Sent from my Sony Xperia S (LT26i)

Ordered mine today woohoo!
Will be here on Monday.. maybe Tuesday but i hope monday.
I used to have a Arc, then the Xperia Mini Pro and now this xD
Cant wait

Came from a SGS 2 to this.
Speed: Fast and stable.
Battery: will get back and post in a week.
Design: I personally like it, feels solid in the hand.
Selling points: beautiful screen it's not Amoled but excellent effort by Sony, The NXT interface feels light and nice LWP and the themes look really polished You can delete Timescape and Friends widgets. Video playback, Bravia Engine makes the colors more natural.
Mine is a White xs. All Retail XS come pre-install with Screen protector. Spare one is also provided.
Sound is superb in my ears but I am not audiophile.
Storage: Phone Memory 1.7 GB but I have a few apps installed. Internal memory is 25.80GB
Question to OP what phone you moving from? Also is storage a major factor for you?

Amazing phone.
For now the battery life is not great though.

I love this phone!
the design is just great, sound is also pretty good and the camera in this phone really good (look at some pictures someone posted). I came from a LG Optimus 2x and this phone is way faster so that's a plus.
The battery life on the moment is well so so, it could be better, but i have a feeling it will take a while to settle down

Screen is gorgeous
It makes the sgs2 look like a toy.
There seems to be a few sw kinks. Browser is a little laggy, but it is a great phone.

Both me and my house mate got ours from the Carphone Warehouse. Mine is on Vodafone and my house mate's Xperia S is on Three.
Both are unlocked and bootloader unlocking is allowed

My favorite aspect of this device is the screen . Beautiful video reproduction. I thought the Arc S was nice and this is better.

[Q] Is it too late for me to get X10?

I got it for $400 after tax.
I didn't have intention to buy until I heard 2.3 is coming in 2-3 months, so I decide to jump in and get the phone.
I am just wondering is it too late to get it while it has 465MB for storage and 256MB RAM (but I don't see much problem even I open few applications at a time).
Bottom line is: it's a decent phone if it's not better than G2x.
If all you're going to do is use the media player, surf the web, and play some simple games, it'll be just fine. I'm hopeful that 2.3 will make it smoother, but that remains to be seen.
But if I had to get a phone today that worked on t-zones, I'd get the Incredible S, which I got for my gf. And man, that phone is snappy as hell with a Very good screen even though I'm not a huge fan of Sense. Not to say that I'm not happy with my x10, I love the fact that it has actual buttons and wouldn't consider trading it for anything at the moment.

I've had the phone since launch
And thanks XDA devs my phone is now better than most other stock new android phones
If you can get it relatively cheapish I would recommend it
The only thing I think that spoils it is the dual touch isn't too great for multitouch gaming,
Other than that once the 2.3.3 update is out it will last me till April 2012 when 2.4 is out and dual core is at its best
Hope this has helped
EDIT: X10 has 384mb ram

Dude, i love my X10 but for that price i would have just saved another 150 and got a sgs2 or arc. $400 is kinda expensive today for a X10. Just my opinion tho. If your happy, thats all that really matters.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
$400 is a bit high for a x10. But since you got it already, enjoy it
I wanted to get Incredible S, but difficulty to root is a concern.
X10 is pretty easy to root with SOC, but I have no plan to load custom ROM because I have to find more "workable" 2.2 ROM, but again, as 2.3 is on the way, it should be worth to wait.
Tip: nokia (N8) stereo headset works with mic, and I got a special plug adapter so I can use iphone headset with it.

Really? If you're interested in rooting the x10 just to get a better ROM, you should've just gotten the Incredible S. Especially since the Incredible S is getting 2.3 tomorrow and it's a generation ahead of the x10. Hell, if you wanted 2.3, you could've gotten the HD2 for $80 and throw it on there.
Not to say you made a bad decision or anything. The x10 can be a good phone instead of just ok as it is right now.
400? Jesus you could get a phone ten times better for that :S
I like it, but mine was only 200, and not on a contract
Wow 400.. Im considering selling my x10 for 150 lol (locked to Rogers though)
once the 2.3 update hits the X10, it will be a much more respectable phone, but $400 is a bit much, I mean, I have AT&T and got mine from Bestbuy for free, so go figure.
I think you must go for the ARC, the reason is the Multi Touch and more Free Ram, and about the same price, and you will get a lot of future updates, a pretty phone. I don't know, is what i think.(Not in my country yet, because that i have a x10 but uber modded of course)

Arc is crap? I mean sure, sgs2 is a better buy but cmon... if you've ever used Samsung/TouchWiz you'll know their idea of a UI is either:
1.Ripoff iOS UI in many different ways and get sued for it
2.Bright colourful icons with a font that appeals to a 5 year old
Hardware wise (except for the camera), clearly, it blows everything else out of the water. Software, not so much. Same goes for design
Also I've read a lot of reviews that say the SGS2 has a horrible battery life.. but then again, I've read a lot saying the Arc's is crap too

easily changed with a diff launcher, and 4.0 blows 3.0 out of the water.
I think it is better than the arc in every way, reviews tend to agree.
The arc is another se fail imo... too little too late

I don't think the ARC is a fail, though there are better phones you can buy with just a bit more money.

Anyone else a bit disappointed with the Xperia S ?

Well I have to say I bought the Xperia S with high hopes it would live up to my past experiences of the Sony brand and the spec list on the Xperia S, however it hasnt really.
I have found it laggy and under-whelming even in normal use and dont get me started on those bottom buttons.
Looking at the spec, I would expect it to be a hell of alot quicker and less laggy than it is. Are these things that will be fixed with an update or is this the best we can expect the device to ever be.
Camera, not that impressed. It is capable of very good shots, but doesnt deal well with light, with areas of a image being washed out due to normal light from sky.
Anyone else considering sending it back / selling it, and buying something else?
I just sold it and decided to wait for a Sony model designed for ICS or with better bottom buttons. I thought the phone had too much Bezel area and length for the screen size. I hope Xperia P buttons are more sensitive. I didn't have long enough to see any performance issues. I seem to love my Arc even more now
Sent from my LT15a using xda premium
I'm thinking of selling mine purely down to the fact ICS is now planned for a late Q2 release which I think is shocking considering this is Sony's flagship device.

I gotta be honest I'm really not sure. I also dunno if i want such a big screen. Stuck the Xperia s back in the box this morning and been using my trusty old iPhone 4 and I kinda prefer the size...but everything high spec at the moment seems to be going the 4 inches route.
I do agree btw what you said about ICS on the XS...it seems to be last in line..though I'm not really sure if it would make an improvement. You happy with yours aside from that?
Im happy with mine xperia s. Im only disappointed with built-in battery ;/
Very happy with the device, no disappointment.
I believe delaying the ICS is the correct decision, rather than rush out a flawed upgrade.
Had mine since release date I have no regrets. I like the build and NXT iface. battery I get just around 30hrs but I am not really a heavy user. Just waiting for the firmware update ICS right now is not a biggie for me. those wanting gs2 good luck to you just remember GS3 ain't that far away. Good luck to the HTC one guys personally I cannot stand sense or TW. Each to their own
XPS still is one of the most beautiful looking Android phone out there. HTC One X looks ugly to my eyes but I just pulled the trigger on it. Should have it next week. I just don't like how HTC phones have that curved edges at four corners of the screen. Decided to give it a chance till I find more details on Xperia P and the capacitive buttons.

I completely agree. This is the best gingerbread device on the market currently and one of the best smart phones currently available.
While lack of ICS for the time being is disappointing. The design, hardware and features more than makes up for that.
People are constantly praising my phone how amazing it looks and feels.
I've even had Nexus owners compliment my phone.
We also have the best screen and camera on the market currently.
You'd have to be crazy to give this phone up.

There's an easy trick to the capacitive buttons.
Instead of pressing the buttons, slide your finger over the area.
Garanteed 100% accuracy everytime.

Touch sensitive buttons never a problem for me, I don't understand how anyone can have problems with them. When I first got the phone it was a bit hit and miss but got used to where I needed to press very quickly. If you have big fingers maybe but otherwise you shouldn't have a problem.
I had the hd2 for two years prior to owning this phone, and I loved it especially as it was easy to root and there are loads of custom roms and tweaks,it was like having a new phone every week.
Xperia S took a bit of getting used to coz I liked sense, still do, but after all the changing of roms it's nice to have everything working out of the box and I wanted a decent camera and video recorder and the one on the xperia is first class.
I'm not totally happy with everything but I haven't been with any phone I've had, the perfect phone doesn't exist, and never will.
I specifically got this for the camera capabilities, any other positives where a bonus.
So overall I'm very happy, but as someone already mentioned, each to there own.

Thanks button everyone for the input. Interesting to see all the different viewpoints.
I am still selling mine, though not sure what to replace it with quite yet.
Does anyone know a reliable unlocker for the Xperia S?
Also, are we allowed to post ebay links on xda?
The phone in itself is fantastic im not denying that. What I am [email protected]&:#/ off with is the fact this device is the flagship but is getting ICS after the 2011 devices and im afraid that is inexcusable on Sony's part.

[Q] Is it xperia s worth the buy?

Hello,
I just want to get the opinions of all xperia users who would like to take the time to answer my question.
I currently have a samsung galaxy note and i stumbled across the xperia s via the smartwatcha and smart wireless headset pro (i have this ocd-ish problem where all of my gadgets need to have one brand primarily) and i was wondering what are the community's take on the phone?
I'll primarily be using it as a secondary phone if not become primarily as soon as i get tired of lugging my big ass Galaxy Note around.
There is just something alluring about its sharp minimalistic style not to mention having a hd bravia tv in the palm of my hand.
Anyways, back to my question: what are your general opinions of the phone? Good or bad i'd like to hear them all.
Its a good phone, I love the screen and the processor seems fast enough. My gripes with it are, I am not sure about the button placement. Also I am not a fan of the usb flap cover. The light bar is awesomeness though.
It's awesome. That's all.

It would be a great phone if it wasnt for that damn yellow tint!!

There's a few more threads about people on the fence with this phone around here somewhere. I imagine it may feel tiny though after lugging around a note .

i had sgs2
now i have XS
worth it ? yep
I came from a note as well although mine died
I love this phone, my only gripe is the lack of developers here on xda, most devs seem to goto Samsung or HTC. I actually don't know if that's a good or bad thing because Sony's UI is fantastic and so is the whole experience so rooting the phone isn't really worth it at this stage for me, whereas with the note I was flashing every other day and that wasn't necessarily a good thing.
I miss the big screen of the note but I sure don't miss the SAMOLED display and the bad placement of those capacitive buttons and also the power button. The other real bad thing I noticed when I came to the xperia was how badly the note handled itself under sunlight I could never make out what was displayed and had to use my other hand as shade which didn't improve it much and also adding to the already difficult handling. With the Sony there is zero problems under sunlight I was amazed. I've held the Sony directly in sunlight and still can see the screen at around 80% vision comparing to the notes 10% vision.
I paid 800AUD for the note in November and I just paid 420AUD for the xperia s just after they got released and personally it outperforms it in software and hardware.
Sony feels expensive in the hands yet its cheap, Samsung feels cheap yet its expensive.
Oh yeh one other thing I really hate is the flap covers for the USB I could understand if the phone lasted a week without charge but when you charge everyday its pointless and frustrating.

but in my case i a little bit disapointed because i can't root it (yet, i hope) and i can't unlock the bootloader

The Xperia S is a new phone, just give it some time and more devs will come to make roms and add-ons Most of them are just waiting for the ICS update I think
But the phone is really great Also love the fact Sony will give us 4.0.4 probably instead of 4.0.3 like most devices
Considering XperiaS to be my first dual core smartphone, it does its job pretty well. Superfast processing, loads of RAM,great camera on a phone.. Unlocked Bootloader on mine.. And ICS not that far away.. What more would you want?

It works just as any auto-adjust, it just isn't as drastic when it adjusts ( more adjusts in phases than the 'low light > omg my eyes!'). It adjusts how it should at night, and outside (even in the sun) it is the most visible and clear I have ever seen in a touchscreen phone, the clarity is really impressive.
I don't know why, but I guess since most people use the auto setting, they removed it? I dunno, but you can still disable it with a widget anyways, so it doesn't really matter

I have a One X+, if i would be in your place i will wait for next year. I am convinced that by february they will launch a new model.
I am very satisified with my HOX+ until now, but just have it about 10 days or so... Very fast, battery life is fine (can last for 3 days or 6 hours, depends on operations...) and I except it to get better after a few more cycles -> similar to the S3 of colleagues of me... It get's warm on the backside (about 40°C according to battery app) on heavy operation, but never hot in any way (I am no hardcore gamer). In normal operation battery temp is about 23° C to 28° C... Camera/Video in good light very well. 64 GB is amazing, love that! Sound is very good especially with third party player and EQ...
I come from XperiaS and HOX+ is better in every way, except maybe camera (but not really sure about that until now)... Had to decide between this and S3 and I am very happy I took the HOX+ :good: Looks better and feels much much better! Last but not least I like the look&feel of Sense more than the ones on Sony or Samsung phones (installed CM10 on my 10.1 Tablet to get rid of the Samsung stuff)...
I don't think you can do anything bad buying this phone. Compare it to the competition right now and it's very good. Sure, in half a year or so there will be newer stuff out there, but that's the way it is...

I'm at my upgrade time on Orange UK but they don't stock the HOX+ at all and don't appear to be going to either!
Looks like I'll have to go sim only and buy it but want an honest review as I can't find a store that had it in to play with #frustrating
There are a few on YouTube but they are the generic unboxing & start up reviews. I'm after a what's it like to use, battery life, speed etc...
Thanks in anticipation

you can buy it without any toughts... in my opinion is the best android device out there!
it is fast , it has 60 gig rom and that is huge, more than enough.
great design! the bat is great, one day without problems, with wifi all day and moderat usage i still have at 22:00 H at least 30-40 %.
all in all is a great device, and i tell you from all my hearth you can buy it !!!:good:

How is ZU (opinions apreciated)

So im thinking of buying a ZU
Id like to know how it is, any lag, landscape lag, bugs etc
And also id like to know some bootloader info
How easy to unlock
Is kernel layout and workings simular to other devices?
-Side note, im a noob dev, im learning how to modify kernels and such, also some learning on the side with roms
C#/+/++
Java
Blah blah
Would you reccomend it instead of a Z1 or Z
Thank you

- No lag that is worth mentioning
- Sony has its own bootloader unlocker, or you can use Flashtool
I can't give you any answers regarding kernel stuff and things like that, since i'm not a dev. Would i recommend the Ultra over the Z1? It really depends. Do you want a big or a "small" device? They are identical hardware wise - except for the camera and screen - where the Ultra has the superior screen (AH-IPS on the Ultra vs VA TFT on the Z1), while the Z1 has a much better camera (The Ultra's camera is really bad). Rooting is a b**** at the moment since the latest firmware fixed an exploit, so it's not that straight forward to root it if you're on the latest firmware (you can always downgrade, though). Am i happy with the Ultra? Very. There are no serious bugs (in the latest fw), the battery is good, screen is good etc.
It's a business/geek device.
That's it for now i guess. For the more technical kernel questions and stuff like that, i'll have to give my stick to someone else.
@LordManhattan
Thank you, been looking into upgrading from my Xperia S
I dont like that with Z1 unlocking your bootloader breaks the camera
ZU may be my choice

I recommend you to check it out in a store before buying/ordering it if you have the chance. It's really big, but it grows on you after about a week and it won't be so intimidating, but again; it's big

it is definitely big, and also heavy with my 4500 mah battery case, but it is SO growing on me, hehe. the display is awesome, and the stock rom runs great, and i have plenty of battery life even without my battery case.
the funny thing is, the device actually felt small to me at first. the reason being that it reminded me of a Nexus 7 2013, but it's small for an N7

I haven't really played any CPU/GPU intensive games, except for Riptide GP 2, and I've had no issues with overheating at all. It may - as all devices, give off some heat but it won't melt your hands or burn down your house.
GTA might heat it up a bit if you play for awhile and especially if you're charging it at the same time, though. We don't really know until you try it.

The phone is amazing, after 1-2 days its not actually as big as you first think. The speed, is incredible, the screen is Godly. The battery life isnt great but its ok, at 5-5.5 hours of screen time. I love it... but i think i will be returning it now.
why?
Because the Camera quality is beyond bad. If you intend to take any pictures at all, dont get this phone.
Saying the camera is bad makes it sound good, its really really really reallyyyy bad. Like in perfect lighting conditions itl take a photo about the quality of a phone 2-3 years ago.
If the conditions are anything but perfect... WOW i mean, a pastel painting may be more accurate at displaying what you took a photo of.
Im not some photographer or photo snob, I just like to occasionally take out my phone and snap a photo which i have done with my last 4 phones with pleasure. But not this one.
so dont be disappointed when every single photo that you take looks like complete utter trash.

I play games on it, real racing 3, asphalt 8, deadtrigger, GTA 3. No overheating problems at all, I think due to the glass on the back heat is quickly transferred to the air.
Simply amazing phone, in fact the best Phablet on the market for someone like me who switched from Samsung's Galaxy Note series. Yes the Camera low light performance is useless but you need to consider how important imaging is to you or the lack of flash. I really don't mind as long as they improve the internal camera app. It is let down by poor software optimizations.
To get the best out of XZU, you need to install the Paranoid Android ROMs and let the magic happen. I have not done it yet but will wait for a stable rooting option before I go through all this as all the current solutions require too much effort and risk and I cannot afford it with this beauty.
Welcome to the world of - Ultra!
You will be happy to have this device. I love it. I've had other phablets, and this has proven to be the best so far.
- Build quality is amazing!
- UI is super smooth
- Battery is ok. You'll get a day out of it at least.
- Sony updates and dev support is great... best I've had so far.
- Gaming is great. I've had no stutters, and all games have been on Max.
- Connectivity is good. wifi sometimes lacks range and will disconnect when I'm 8-10m away from router. That's strange.
- Camera is ok. Its 5 / 10 so average.. From what you say its probably only slightly better than the 'S'
** maybe you can make a kernel for my rom?? Be good to have more than base tweaks **
