New - TouchPad General

Hi all just got a 32 gb touchpad. My question is which android build had full hardware working? EG: camera mic 3d.

None of them.
The best you will get is hardware acceleration, no camera or mic.

Not even cm7
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk

Not even CM7. If you want microphone and camera, for now its best to stick with webOS.

and hardware acc is a pretty recent addition to the TP. You could always dual boot to Web OS to get those functionalities.

CM7 has microphone and the camera sorta works, but it really isn't worth it. The CM9 experience is much nicer overall if you can live without camera and mic. You can always reboot into WebOS for video calling, which I think is the only thing you'd ever want to use the camera for anyway, it's not really a great picture-taking camera.

Hero v. G1...

I have been dual booting my Kaiser as of the last couple weeks, and have fallen in love with Android. When it works, which it does about 90% of the time, it is 100x better than WM. All I find myself longing for is the stabilty of an actual Android specific phone.
I have a couple questions for those of you that have experience with the Hero, as well the G1...
Hero questions (And please forgive me if search would answer some of these, my google search didn't net any direct comparisons of the Hero and G1 in a true personal use sense, just passing in reviews, and I didn't find much on XDA other than hardware comparisons):
1. How well does the onscreen keyboard work? Are there apps out there that give a bigger better keyboard, or is the pre-installed already as good as it gets? I do a decent amount of typing, from couple paragraph work emails to IM with the lady.
2. How would you rate the screen image quality in person? I am not a snob when it comes to 'spec' numbers, what I care about is how it actually looks, ie clear and crisp.
3. How is the video playback?
If you have owned/ used a G1, could you compare the Hero directly with the G1 as well.
Basically, I am trying to decide between the two, or possibly the Samsung Galaxy. I do like a physical keyboard, so i have been leaning towards the G1 because of that, but the spec sheets on the Hero are far superior. So if the onscreen keyboard flies well, I will likely take that route then.
strange that you totally don't care about/aware of the voice quality of a phone.

Pretty much every review out there already covers call quality, and it isn't at the top of my list, to say the least. I type much more than I actually talk on my phone. The only time I make phone calls is to my dad to let him know I am on my way, and to my manager for imediete approval of an exception for a customer. And I have to use my BB at work (I sell cell phones, and they gave us one for free, but we have to use them at work).
This is mostly a treat for myself, and will be used mainly for web browsing, IM with the lady, video playback, and messing around with android in general.
The on screen keyboard is actually good and its so forgiving , also I think you can install other keyboard from the android market , the screen is ok ( I had an iphone before and the iphone's one is better ) also the samsung has a better screen ( samsung!! ) , the hero is my first android phone so really I can't compare it for you , but I will say go for the better hardware (magic ,hero) so you make sure if there are updates you will get them .
The keyboard is superb! By far the best on screen keyboard I have ever used.
It fixes most typos or mis-presses. very impressive.
The screen quality isn't groundbreaking, but is very nice. Personally I don't need anything better.
The Oleophobic coating (anti fingerprint) on the screen works as advertised.
I barely have the need to wipe the screen. It's actually very cool.
I haven't tried video playback yet, but I heard that it's not that good.
All I can tell you is the Hero plays the Intro video that it comes with perfectly.
All in all a very good/impressive phone.
The user experience is very good.
HTC have earned some extra credit points with me.

Stable Rom for tp

Can anyone recomend stable Rom for tp which is pretty stable and has everything working (gapps , WiFi)...
Wrong section. And none are stable fully yet.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
As Leo said there are no stable roms out, currently there are only 2 roms as it stands, Cyanogen's CM7 who's running Alpha 3 and XRON's CM7 build.
Personally I've been running CM7 Alpha 3 with no huge issues. The screen will freeze here and there, but a reboot fixes it with no problem, everything seems to work, gapps, wifi, my apps are smooth as butter and my movies and music sound amazing. If your looking for something stable stick with WebOS until Cyanogen puts out a stable rom, perhaps it'll include an easy install, as the current install is a bit tricky and even the 'detailed' tutorial posts on installation leave some parts out.
there is that other "no credit" ROM in the general forum (where this thread should belong) and actually that's working better for me than alpha 3 and xron
although that said it is a bit difficult at 1st cuz it's in chinese and you have to reset it to english....etc etc...then the keyboard....then a reboot

you also excluded MIUI on purpose?
As XRON is build from CM7, and so the rest are I believe.. there is by means only 1 ROM with different mods around.. well.. they're all based on CM7..that's what I'm trying to say.. not that they have the same flaws and equal each other.. but the base is the same?

To answer op, CM7 for the Touchpad is actually pretty stable. I'm running 3.5 Alpha from the CM team and it is smooth as butter. Unlike webOS for the TP, I can even use my blutooth keyboard + mouse on Android.
To whoever said it was difficult, I gotta say that's bs. It's definitely no more difficult than installing Preware on your TP, and it's worth it for added functionality. The most annoying problem was how long downloading everything took. Having all the apps Android has alone makes it worth installing.
I ran the N64 emulator on Android and it ran perfectly. Haven't tested other games yet, but I don't play many games anyway. Is it as smooth as my SGS II I777? Nah. But it IS smoother than many other Android tablets and phones that are dualcore.
Finally, a heads up for the only program I saw stutter: Netflix doesn't play as smoothly as I'd like, and but it plays good enough to not ragequit. I'm not sure if all video playback is like that, but again, it's not so bad that you couldn't watch your videos - just don't expect them to play as smoothly as a native android phone or tablet. The next thing that might bother you on 3.5 Alpha is the lack of useful headphone jack. When you plug your headphones in, the audio still comes out the speaker, but honestly, I don't see myself or anyone reasonably using their TP as a media player while in a gym or other public settings.

actually my rom is based on CM 3.5 and the headphone jack is just fine. But agree with how you put all else.

Is the atrix right for me?

Hi,
I'm using a LG Optimus One right now and I'm looking to upgrade to the atrix.
I'm temporarily in the US and have found a really good deal on a used Atrix so I'm really tempted, however I've still got some questions:
1. Is the atrix able to run all games (even the dual-core ones) when it's running on stock rom?
2. Do you think it's worth for me to spend about 100 $ more to get a newer phone like the HTC Sensation? (I mean I'm not sure how big the difference between this two would be, and the atrix even has more ram)
3. How good does the fingerprint sensor work? It sounds really cool in theory but how good is it really?
4. Do you think in terms of overall experience (speed, smoothness of scrolling) the atrix is comparable to the iPhone 4?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I want to be able to ocassionally do stuff on my phone with one hand? This is possible on smaller screens like my Optimus One but is it possible on the atrix?
I haven't had a lot of gaming experience (at least on the phone), but all the games I've tried that are compatible from the Market runs pretty smoothly on the Atrix.
To answer your question about the fingerprint sensor, it works quite well as an unlock safety mechanism, for me at least. Especially with the volume button unlock mod, and if you are willing, on custom roms that greatly reduced the lag that stock rom has for unlocking with finger swipe.
Other people also have luck in utilizing the sensor as a trackball during navigation or text selection.
As for one hand usage, I use the phone mostly with just one hand, and I'm even using swype exclusively to type. To me it's perfectly comfortable and I feel like it wouldn't be so if the phone was any bigger.
Here's what I think:
Q. Is the atrix able to run all games (even the dual-core ones) when it's running on stock rom?
A: So far I've been able to play everything I've thrown at it (stock or not), even the latest and greatest games. And if you mean dual-core games as Tegra games, of course it can play them, the Atrix is a Tegra 2 phone.
Q. Do you think it's worth for me to spend about 100 $ more to get a newer phone like the HTC Sensation? (I mean I'm not sure how big the difference between this two would be, and the atrix even has more ram)
A: You preatty much have it sorted out, I personally wouldn't go for the Sensation (or any other dual-core at the moment), in that case I would wait a bit longer to get a Tegra 3 phone.
Q. How good does the fingerprint sensor work? It sounds really cool in theory but how good is it really?
A: For me it's been a really great and useful feature since I track my car and control many of it's features (locks, alarm, etc) and also control several video survelliance cameras right from the Atrix, so the FP is a must for me.
Q. Do you think in terms of overall experience (speed, smoothness of scrolling) the atrix is comparable to the iPhone 4?
A: I consider the Atrix far superior than the iPhone 4 (this has been discussed over and over). I can list the features but it will get very lenghty. I will just mention a few:
1. Atrix is a 1 Ghz (overclockable) Dual-Core nVidia powered device. IPhone 4 is an 800 single core.
2. Removable (longer lasting) battery. The iphone's battery doesn't perform very well at all.
3. Android OS, subjective I know, but I rather have complete control of the OS since it's MY phone.
4. More RAM. Very important for performance.
5. Webtop and real HDMI output
Q: I want to be able to ocassionally do stuff on my phone with one hand? This is possible on smaller screens like my Optimus One but is it possible on the atrix?
A: Of course, I always install two different Keyboard layouts, Swift X Pro for two thumb typing, and Swype for one hand typing.

Video Camcorder Xperia S

I made this using my 3D printer and CNC machine. I wonder if there is any real demand for these kits. Check out my pics...

I was using the LG Camera Pro for shooting video and it is really good with many camcorder features including locked focus.
Swish! Nicely done. Would love one of those. H'much to mock another up and send it to Ireland?
Also, thats something that strikes me, there are hundreds if not thousands of camera apps, but like no video ones.

Yeah, mostly camera apps for still pictures and almost nothing for video recording. As I have tested, lgcamerapro is really good and that is only the only one worth using. The rest of them are either camera shortcuts or worse than the built in camera app.
Will pm you regarding the camcorder kit. Don't want to get banned.

OaTs light n tasty: alternative or upgrade please?

I am still on this ROM and I want to switch but I can't find anything that gets the kind of battery life this ROMs gets even fat n creamy doesn't really compare I wish oat was back because I always have to do a recharge after browsing the internet for a while with most ROMs this one I recharge every other day.
CM9 with working camera... I enjoy being able to skype

Try SGA's AOKPandCM9remix it was started by SGA when oats pulled his Rom.
If you like OaT's ROM, why change?

I am currently happy with the SGA Fat 'n Creamy but intend to try is AOKP/CM9 re-mix soon. But if you want to try an alternative ROM that was very stable, very smooth, and had great battery life, you might like to try RandomROM's Falcon 1.3. AOKP-based and pretty cool. Note: he hasn't integrated the camera into the ROM yet (whereas SGA has in his ROMs), so if camera is important you are better off with SGA's ROMs or the CM9 nightly with camera.

I really enjoyed O.A.T's LnT BA - great battery life, fast and smooth, and good and loud audio! I am currently running CM9 nightly on one TP and CM10 Preview on the other. Would really enjoy to see a LnT BA based on current CM10!
OaT's new JB Rom
OaT has posted a new JB-based LnT Rom.
Only running it for a few hours, but so far, so good. No random reboots.
No BA in new OAT LnT JB
There is no BA feature in the new rom unfortunately

I think it means Beats Audio which was an optional feature on his CM9 Rom . How much difference it makes I'm not sure ,some wanted it and others didn't /couldn't tell the difference .

Ahh, I see, thanks. I thought it was something important, perhaps related to battery (eg. "battery advancement"). I know the original TP with webOS had Beats built in, so I am guessing OaT figured a way to integrate that into his ROM, but without a Beats headset I wouldn't really know, and to be honest, the times I have used even the most expensive Beats headphones at stores I have found them too bass heavy and prefer other brands like Sennheiser.
If audio performance is really a major factor, there are lots of other ways to change the sound, including DSP Manager (which may be already included... I have it),, WinAmp, I happen to already like the sound through my TouchPad, but to me the what you are listing through make way more difference than any app or frequency modifications. I use a Monster Clarity mini speaker via bluetooth or a really cheap set of Sennheiser headphones (love to get a pair of Sennheiser HD280s... they kill Beats headphones IMO for less than $100).
I have spent a day with OaTs new ROM and haven't had a problem at all. The ROM is super smooth and fast in transitions, all apps I have tried seem to work (Netflix, Skype, camera, audio). I switched back to the stock Browser (had been using Boat and Maxthon on previous ICS ROMs) but the stock browsers seems faster and shows Flash on JB. My one app challenge (Spashtop) seems an issue on the Spashtop side since I am also having a prob with my GB phone (appears the people at Splashtop are trying to raise additional subscription revenues... may need to drop them). I did pay $2 for the JB+ camera I believe you are using... works fine, and especially like that the zoom features works for both still and camcorder.
Amazes me that so much work has happened recently on the TouchPad, a now outdated and abandoned hardware platform designed to run webOS, where dedicated consumer/developers have back-engineered a working camera and the latest Android operating system (in comparison, my HTC Android cell phone (at one time considered HTC's LTE leader), is running two versions old Android (Gingerbread) and HTC/Verizon have missed their targeted release of ICS by months and will likely never offer ICS on the phone. Folks here should feel especially fortunate for the work the devs have and continue to do.

I have partial hearing loss and when I travel by plane, I like to watch movies on my touchpad. I could actually hear the movies in WebOS, but I had to convert to a crappy format to get them to play. In most android builds I can't get the volume up high enough to hear the speech, but I could with his BA builds. I hope he reads these since I don't have enough posts to comment on his actual thread.

What "crappy" format did you convert to/why? Did you know that for WebOS there are several volume enhancers /boosters available from Preware .
I am using the new oats and MX player and if you use the built-in DSPManager you should be able to adjust the various frequency ranges.
I have done this for my daughter who suffers from a hearing problem .
I hope this helps with whatever you choose to watch your movies through either WebOS or Android . Happy flying .
Not sure what the BA option is, I have been running this from for a few days now and it has really breathed new life in my touchpad!
One thing of note, after installing it you need to flash his O&T gapps, YouTube will need to be installed over Google play along with Google play services (which you will be prompted to install when trying to install YouTube)
Google Chrome does not work well, but the stock browser is beauty.
