I tried to upgrade to froyo using the odin method from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853950. After everything was successfully done my phone shut off and now it won't turn on. I don't get a battery charge screen or anything. The phone's just blank.....
First, Get the Shipping rom (pit and tar files) so you can ODIN back to stock
Be sure you have the newest version of ODIN
Then remove the battery, plug the USB to the PC.
Now put the battery back.
Press both vol keys (up and down) and hold.
That should get you in Download Mode.
If it does not work, take battery out, unmplug USB.
Put battery back and try again to go into download mode.
Now you put the wrong version of froyo, if your keys maps are changed you may be screwed
If so, good luck! You are gonna need a lot of research to see if you can save it
i think i'm screwed.....nothing is working
If anyone else could help me with this, it would be great. I'm in between a rock and a wall right now with my phone.
you flashed the wrong rom. You didn't know that, did you?

No I didn't know that sadly. Is there anyway I can save my phone?
Hehehehe...I bricked mine yesterday. I disabled voodoo via Voodoo Toggle and waited for Linda to convert. I loaded up Odin and put in my pit & tar for JFD, which I always use, and hit start. I was on Nero v3 going to flash Nero v4 when it came out. I got a Fail part of the way through. The phone won't power on at all.....A popup says Windows can't recognize the device plugged into usb...
I think people are confusing things here and there...if your phone won't power on at all, you can't get help...you can't get into download mode to odin or recover it.
Like mine, for instance, there is no amount of times taking the battery out or doing this or that is gonna fix it..We need to read the post before we try to offer help...IF IT WON'T POWER ON how can people post ways to ODIN or RECOVER...
I'm just sayin....

Well right now I'm simply trying to get the phone to turn on which it won't, I was not asking for help to odin or recover. I was trying to ask if anyone else had this problem and if my phone is totally killed or if there's a possibility that i can save it. But thanks for your 2 cents.
Me too
I had ordered Samsung Vibrant Unlocked from T-Mobile USA around a month back. I am well past the 30 day replacement now.
I Rooted it updated to Axura 2.2.5.9
After all the procedure got completed, I rebooted the phone and now it just won't start at all.
My piece is Hardware Locked wherein I can't get into the Recovery Mode, but can get into the Download Mode. But I am not even able to get into the Download mode now.
It just won't freaking turn on.
If I send it over for repair, as the phone is a rooted one, will I void the warranty ?
Please reply quickly. I am starting to freak out.
OK... I want to be the first to eat my words here!!!!!
I tried one last time...just now
I took everything out and only held the volume keys. I plugged in the USB cable to the PC and then to the phone & put the battery in and BAM!!!!! it came on in Download mode
This way has NEVER worked for me without holding the power button. This phone was in all senses of the word "DEAD". I figured I would give it a try with just the volume keys.

I got the same issue and this isn't working for me.
are there any other ideas?
it is completely dead. I am using a new battery and a known good usb cable to the computer.
I have tried holding all three buttons...just the vol up and down...vol up and power...etc... and nothing.
I even created that little JTAG thingy that I found on YouTube...that did nothing also
Different Situation
I have a similar problem with my Vibrant.
I reset my battery stats and also disabled VooDoo lagfix, and after i tried to reboot the phone, it froze on the vibrant screen.
I tried using soome of the methods that you guys posted before me, but then after i turn it on it shows an icon that there is a connection problem between the phone and PC.
I CAN turn on the phone, is there a way to just like reset everything? and if so how?
Thanks!

If your phone powers on at all, you should be able to get into DL mode. Follow the instructions on how to revert to stock via ODIN.
In reply to the OP, if you tried the download mode method:
connect phone to usb
pull out battery
hold both volume sticks
put in batttery
and the phone still does not turn on even after multiple tries , well you're a bit screwed. But, Samsung cannot detect if the phone has been rooted if it cannot even turn on. Just tell them the Kies Mini update bricked the phone.
omg leave ur phone on charger for 10 min, pull battery out when hooked up to charger put battery back in , let sit for few min pull battery out hook up phone to computer hold vol up vol down pop battery in , helped ? np this has been answered gazilion times in other threads
btw it takes few try this way to get it back up running so dont stop on first , hey .
If you have the phone!pc problem..connect to odin & see if your showing a COM port .... just flash pit & tar if you do. Without download mode

You're talking about a DIY Jig. A JTAG is completely different. They cost $150-300. You can pay to have a local repair shop jtag it for around $50 or send it to Samsung to repair/replace. I'm still trying to find out how much Samsung would charge for the repair if it's deemed out of warranty.
If your phone refuses to turn on no matter what you do and it gets warm or hot if you leave the battery in it, read on:
I hope my suggestion is not too late. I was in the situation before. I tried everything everyone said here and somewhere else. None of them works.
The reason that those methods don't work because you cannot get to download or recovery mode or even the pc-phone screen since your phone won't turn on. The reason that your phone doesn't turn on because the bootloader has been messed up. A jig will work only if your phone can be turned on somehow.
Three possible solutions:
1. Repair or replace it with T-mobile, or
2. Get someone to repair it with a riff box or other similar tool, or
3. Get the box and fix it yourself (not recommended if you are not familiar with electronic stuff.)
This is the link for the same problem you have; this guy bought the box and has his phone fixed himself. If you live in US, he may do it for you if you have no place to go. It does hurt to ask.

So I was flashing my phone with odin and I really messed up and accidentally flashed it with the captivate software not the fascinate software the phone would try to turn on and would show the att loading screen and just kept looping to that screen. I tried to put it back in download mode and it wouldnt work so I read that I should let the battery completely die and try again. I did that and now the phone will not power on at all the screen stays black no matter what key combination I press. I tried holding vol+, vol-, and power; I tried vol- and power, i tried both with the cable plugged in before and after a battery pull, and tried them both without it being plugged in before and after a battery pull. the phone is generating some sort of heat so i know the charger is plugged in properly, (i tested the charger with a samsung infuse and it charges fine so i know the charging cable is working properly). So my question is how do i get it back into download mode so I can flash the proper stock software with odin? all help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! thank you in advance!

thank you! im willing to do the work and research and figure it out!! i use a mac so i am familiar with Heimdall! Ill try what it says, Ill post my results. thanks again for your direction and willing to help a newbie
So I carefully read that post, I'm using a fully charged battery from my friends epic phone, I can't get the phone into download mode and what is ever more strange is that when I press the power button when the phone is NOT plugged into a usb port the phone will show the "att world phone" splash screen, and it will loop boot that image over and over. However, whenever I plug it into a usb cable hooked up to a laptop the phone will go back to a blank black screen and stay that way. Then I will push any key seuqence and I can't get the phone into download mode for the life of me anyone know another way to get into download mode on a samsung fascinate accidentally flashed with a samsung captivate firmware? Once again all help is greatly appreciated
Actually I realized the microusb cable I was using didnt come with the fascinate and the port on the fascinate is oddly shaped so the cable I was using wasnt truly connected, so what happens now with a solid connection to a microusb cable the phone goes to the black screen and will stay that way regardless of what key combinations I hold down. I can even pull the battery and put it back in all while being plugged into the computer and the screen stays black however, when I unplug the phone from the microusb cable the phone will immediately show the "att world phone" splash screen, and continue to loop boot back to that splash screen. Its very strange, someone please help
The usb pinouts are fascinate specific, are you using the stock samsung cable?
Find the download mode jig. Normal download mode methods won't work for you anymore that you're on att firmware. If you're lucky, you can fix it.
Well, let's review........so far you flashed captivate software onto your fascinate, then you thought putting the battery from the epic in your phone might help......I think the next step is definitely to see if putting a hard shell case for the vibrant on your phone will help. May as well cover the entire galaxy s line.
On a serious note, listen to imnuts' advice. It's your only chance.

That's for putting the phone into download mode, not usage of the Micro USB cable. Yes, the port on the phone side has a specific pinout, but the cable itself doesn't.
Love this site, info abounds... Just saw a thread about manually jumping the pins w/a series of resistors. Common sense, but I'd trust the soldering better than my fingers lol. On a lighter note, I think it was only 3 bad ideas... w/ imnuts and shark, he is in good hands.
hey landshark68, i used the battery from my friends epic because the battery from my fascinate would not charge in my fascinate no matter what, so I had to use another battery to even get the phone to do anything, I'm sure you make a lot of friends assuming that everyone is less intelligent than you

It was a joke about piecing things together from all the different galaxy s phones.
lol sorry man, its just frustrating that i havent been able to use my phone and it makes me sad sorry to take it out on you
Did you try this to get in download mode: " If you can't get into download mode with your phone plugged into your PC, unplug usb from PC and plug it into the wall outlet, and try to put it into download mode there. When It goes into download mode, unplug usb from adapter, plug it into PC and put it into download mode, This does work."
it doesnt go into download mode no matter what ive tried all different key combinations used for any galaxy phone and it just loops the "att world phone" splash screen, has anyone else ever accidentally flashed a phone with the wrong model's software before? or am i the only one that is that silly lol
Imnuts is right. And Landshark, while sarcastic, is both right AND funny. Google captivate download jig, (evidently this works for all galaxy s models) read some, go to radio shack, get a (or some more likely) resistor(s), make sure they add up to 301 kohm (again, verify w/ xda post on building a jig, going on what I read last night) and hope you didn't flash yourself a mini att billboard.
or buy one on amazon. 9.99 search galaxy dongle jig. Good luck, since you get some boot activity, it looks like there is some hope.
There is a good chance the download mode jig will work for you based on what you have said. However, it is your ONLY option and last resort at this point if the other download mode methods have failed.
Alrighty, so I've been reading and searching for the last few days, so I'm hoping I avoid asking anything that's been covered ad nauseum, but I haven't been able to find anything that quite fits my situation.
So I've acquired a Verizon Samsung Fascinate from Craigslist that the owner apparently screwed up terribly flashing ROMs to it. I got it for cheap, and was aware of the issues when I got it; just hoping to fix it now. So from what I can gather, he's installed SuperClean 2.9, and it seems to still be on the stock kernel (default recovery is still there). I've been able to flash CWM 3.0.0.8 through ROM Manager, but have learned that v3+ is pretty much useless for the Fascinate due to the different scripting used in the ROMs. I can't, however, seem to find a working flashable version of a prior CWM. If I try to download an older version through ROM Manager, it tells me there was an error downloading the recovery image.
____________
The problems:
____________
Okay, so with that background information, the problem is that when I attempt to turn the phone on, I'm presented with the empty battery icon. If I leaved it plugged in by USB long enough, it will eventually bring up download mode. If I leave it for much longer, I'm then able to power up the phone and use it as normal. I can let the battery fully charge, but as soon as I power off the phone, it again believes the battery is dead. Lather, rinse, repeat. Strangely enough, if I plug it into a wall charger, it flashes back and forth rapidly between Charging and Not Charging. From a USB, it will do the same sometimes, but with enough plugging and unplugging, it will eventually charge. I've also tried a new battery and different cables to no avail.
Also, from download mode, my computer (and consequently, Odin) cannot see the device. Windows doesn't even recognize that a device is connected (Windows 7 64-bit, and have tried on another Windows 7 32-bit with both the Samsung drivers, and those installed through the Kies suite). The phone is recognized just fine if I boot into Android and connect it, so it's not cable issue, it's just something particular with download mode. I've been able to acquire a few different ROMs, but they all require CWM 2.6 or earlier due to the scripting. If I can just get perhaps an update.zip for this, to flash through the stock recovery, or another suggestion on how I might revert it back to a usable state?
Thanks!
TLDR: Fascinate running stock kernel and SuperClean 2.9. PC doesn't recognize device in download mode, the only recovery I can get is CWM 3.0.0.8 which I can't use due to scripting issues, and it's not recognizing the battery's charge level. Help getting CWM 2.6 or prior, or other suggestions?

That's a possibility, I guess. I just suspect something else due to the fact that once it DOES finish charging (and it will eventually), it then immediately registers as dead as soon as I cut the power.
So I should be going into download mode without the battery in? Gotcha. I'd read a few different methods, and some had mentioned plugging in with the battery, and some without. So it should be without. Interesting, yeah, nothing happens holding the volume down and plugging it in sans battery.

Try removing the battery, and holding the vol down button when plugging in to the pc..if you can get the phone into download mode, fire up odin and see if you get "com" and a number next to it...if you do you can flash away...my suggestion... odin eb01 and the atlas 2.2 pit just to be safe...you say you can only get to stock recovery but you think its running ef rom...unless your sure that's what its running...voodoo or not?? Yeah, I just can't get to download mode without the battery installed. With the battery installed and the phone in download mode, the PC won't recognize the device is even attached (hence, no Odin). Odin DOES see it if I boot up the phone into Android, but I can't flash it from there.
I know it's running SC 2.9, but I have no idea how to check if it has Voodoo installed as well. I don't THINK so.

I'm not trying to be a jerk so don't take this the wrong way...but you said you can only get to download with the battery installed?...I think your confusing recovery with download mode. If you can get to download mode it shouldn't matter if the battery is in it or not...you can get to download mode by only 3 methods that I'm aware of...
1: selecting download mode from they power button menu ( if your current rom supports that feature.)
2: removing the battery and holding the down volume button. ...or just removing the battery, plugging into usb in a pc, and then pushing the volume down button.
3: a usb jig that can be made or purchased that will trick the phone into download mode.
there may be another way but those are the methods that I'm aware of. the point is if you can get to the download screen (big yellow triangle with the construction android guy) you should be able to flash with odin...

Not taken the wrong way, it's always good to double check to make sure we're on the same page.
If you're not supposed to be able to enter download mode with the battery installed, then that might mean that something is more seriously wrong with the device, because I can certainly enter download mode (yellow triangle -- downloading... do not turn off target) with the battery installed, and only with the battery installed. I'm definitely aware of the difference in recovery and download, don't worry, though I am new to SGS modification (had a Droid previously).
So yes, right now, my phone is plugged into my PC via USB, with the battery installed, and showing download mode. The computer recognizes nothing, though. I might have to disassemble this thing and just see if anything looks amiss with the battery connectors inside.
Heh, just noticed, looks like this thing has water damage after all. Pretty sure the attached image shows the water indicators, right?
Getting into download with the battery in is not strange or mean something is broken, also I did not know that those little stickers were water markers...mine however look the same as yours?? Have you tried putting the phone and battery separately into a container of white rice for a day or 2?? its supposed to remove all extra water that may be present.
As a side note
When I'm on cm7 my pc doesn't see my phone but odin will still work...I'm using vista home edition using the samsung drivers...but I know some folks have had to use the generic samsung drivers or the ones used for the nexus s...but that's more for people on an mtd build...at this point I'm really just thinking out loud...maybe it will spark something to try..?

those water mark indicators look normal. I believe they turn blue when wet.
I didn't see anyone mention this, if I missed it I'm sorry, but I've heard that Odin does not play well with any usb cable other than the stock one that came with the phone. I don't know how to tell the difference, but that may be something to look into.
I have used a Blackberry Usb cable and Odin saw my phone....
I have 7 64bit and the Samsung drivers work fine.
You said that when you connect the usb as a drive in the rom it works?
Also a trick that once worked for me is take a small peice of paper and fold it a few times to clean out the GUNK in the usb port on the phone.
it will come out looking black!
then pop the battery
plug the phone in to the usb
and hold volume down button until
then see if odin shows it.
Silly question i also thought while typing: Are you using a usb 2.0? I know that is a silly question but maybe try a different port, or a powered usb hub....Just some ideas good luck!

Yes, when plugged in through the ROM, it's recognized as a drive, Odin even pops up the yellow box. Download mode, not so much. I'll give the USB cleaning thing a try; I might have some alcohol tips or something around here.
And yeah, I've been sure to use USB 2.0 on both computers I tried it on.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, they're all very much appreciated.

I'm almost positive you need to use the samsung brand cable..at least I've seen warnings of it and never dared to try odin with my old blackberry cable although I still use it for car charging, but that's all...I would venture to say the cable is more than likely the culprit, or possibly a dirty usb connection like a previous post mentioned

Alright, so I managed to get it booted up again (it's been getting more and more difficult to get it to boot), and I've found an app called "SGS kernel flasher". Any insight as to what kernel I could install that would allow me to flash a permanent custom recovery? My phone info is below:
Hardware Version:
I500.04
Firmware Version
2.2.1
Baseband Version:
S:i500.04 V.EB01
Kernel version:
2.6.32.9
Build number:
SCH-I500.EB01
Hello,
Don't know if this has been asked but I have been looking for it for a while. Cant seem to fine a solution.
I flashed my phone wrong with hemdall now my phone wont turn on. Screen completely black i reboot pulled out the battery everything I can think of can you give me a suggestion. I was thinking about buying a USB Jig.
I'm in the same boat and I bought the Jig. However I think Josh just acts as a middle man on this one and shipping is actually from overseas. But you can find it here. http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-download-mode-jig/ I suggest a little extra shipping cost.
However the other suggestion if that is not working (I think I killed my phone) is to have Josh do a Jtag on the phone. You can find that at http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-vibrant-jtag-brick-repair/
Can you get into download mode? Remove battery, plug usb, press up+down vol buttons and insert battery.
hey i having same problem but i could see the vibrant samsung screen but my phone won't pass that and like you say about the usb cable and then plugging the battery i can do that as well but how can i get my phone back and running another rom!!!

If you can see the Vibrant Samsung screen just use Odin to flash back to stock

The real solution here i doing a JTAG to your phone or make the Unbrickable MOD (It's very dangerous, a person with Welding and electronic skills must do this).
Another thing you can do is buy a broken Screen phone from Ebay (it more cheaply) and change the motherboard!!
My suggestion would be to continue to try to get into Download mode on the phone. My phone was DEAD no life at all plugged into the wall or PC. I kept trying to get it into download mode and magically after hours of failures, ODIN recognized the device! The phone was still DEAD no life at all on the screen but ODIN had recognized that my device WAS indeed connected. So I continued to flash back to stock and as always with a little patience ODIN was there to save me. The phone automatically rebooted after ODIN was done and BOOM! Good2Go
Goodluck!
^^I'm gonna try that and hopefully with some patience it will work. Otherwise I'm also gonna be ordering a jig, they're not that expensive. My problem is the same as the OP's. My vibrant will just not give any signs of life. I was trying to odin to stock from one cosmics ics RC3.1. Wanted to start on a fresh install for AOKP build 25. But then odin decided to fail on modem.bin. then it just hung and phone turned off, haven't been able to turn it on since. I've spent the last two hours trying to put in different combinations and keys and usb attachments to bring any hints of life, but so far nothing. Bootloader update was not checked on odin so I'm pretty confident that its not due to bootloader mismatch but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Sending it back to samsung or tmobile is very far of an option since I've modified the phone to add FFC. If anyone has any advice or hints it would be greatly appreciated. I'm kind of hating myself and flashing now since I was very happy with the rom that I had and how everything was setup. I just wanted to try something new for fun and this went and blew everything up.
^^I literally held down the buttons > plugged in the cord > put in the battery > and counted in my head the amount of seconds it took the phone to "normally" boot to where I would "normally" let go of the power button to get into Download mode, lol I know it sounds ridiculous but that's how I did it. It helped that I had my sisters working Vibrant right there, I used her phone to get into download mode and timed the process and used that as a baseline for the timing of trying to get the "DEAD" Vibrant into download mode.
If all else fails a JTAG as mentioned should fix your problem fosho!
Goodluck!
Ye I fixed it. One day I did what I had been doing the whole time and it just decided to work. Got into download mode then went back to stock. Our phone is so freaking weird yet I love the damn thing. It really is unbrickable. To anyone in this situation just never give up.

Update; Rangercaptain and 440bro suggested the power switch or the usb port may be the problem.
I dismantled the phone and got my ohm-meter, the power button's circuit is opening and closing as it should between pressed and depressed.
Furthermore I tested the usb port for conductivity at each pin, from the side of the usb cable that would normally connect to the pc all the way through the 'charging flex ribbon' to the phones PCB. all connections are good.
Editing this post as I try new things i find or the things i try that people suggest.
Currently my Note will not boot into recovery or it's ROM, I was running a version of Slimbean.
I can get it to go into download mode via the volume down + power key but I can not for life of me get any pc to recognize it via usb.
I have tried Odin, Adb, and Heimdall with five or six different versions of Samsung USB drivers, Version #'s 1.5.14.0, 1.4.6.0, as well as the drivers listed in the Note 'Super thread' ATT I717 v1_3_2200_0 and two other sets of drivers that did not have version numbers listed, but came from other XDA USB problem posts. I have also tried the Google drivers from the Android SDK.
I have done all this on two different pc's and different usb cables. I've read other problem threads about this and tried most of those suggestions I.E. Uninstall old drivers, reboot, install new ones, reboot, turn off internet, plug in phone. Nada, no sign of the device being recognized at all.
I've tried the 'adb devices' command while the device was in download mode, the command returns nothing.
the USB port still works so far as i can tell, if you plug it in to a charger or the pc the phone will try to boot like it usually does if it's powered off and you plug it in and the phone had been charging fine before this issue, so i've no reason to suspect a bad port.
I have however encountered this USB problem before even while the note was stock and functioning with it not being recognizable over USB, I eventually gave up and it's what caused me to install a ROM on it in the first place because i couldn't get the official android updates with Kies (they require a usb connection).
Would a USB jig be of any benefit in this situation? After searching through XDA forums and the like that's the only thing that seems like it may work but i haven't tried. I'm unclear if it will be of any benefit because the device can already access the ODIN downloading screen.
All in all I've been working on this for about 12 hours so far, so it's possible i may have forgotten something I've tried but i'll update if i remember anything significant.
Finally I'm aware there are two similar threads currently running on the XDA note troubleshooting forums,"Is my note bricked?" and "can't enter download mode" I am also watching them and trying anything that looks relevant but elected to make a new post as my problem is slightly different in that I can access the download screen. If you posted anything there that you think may have applied here, you don't have to re-post. I'll have tried it.

Thanks, I should clarify that the reboot cycle is not indefinite though. it'll give the boot vibration 6-8 times with a few seconds in between each vibration and then stop trying to boot. It also doesn't cycle every time, just occasionally. The other times it will give the vibration only once and then do nothing till you hold the power button down again as if you were trying to turn it on.
It will also stay in the downloading mode until i manually hold the power button down, so the power button is functioning correctly.

If you say so.
Take out the sim and sd card.
I have tried removing the SD card and SIM card as well. Makes no noticeable difference.
I can also add that the USB port still works so far as i can tell, if you plug it in to a charger or the pc the phone will try to boot like it usually does if it's powered off and you plug it in.
I can dismantle the phone and check the power button if you're fairly convinced that's what it is but it really responds exactly like you would expect. The press and return feels fine and the way the device responds to it also feels fine.
Yeah I'm pretty sure it's a stuck power button. If the phone is off and you plug in usb, or charger it should NOT startup by itself. If it does it's most definitely a stuck power button. So I'm guessing your phone is no longer covered by warranty?
Before you go tearing apart the phone try this first. Take off the battery cover and where the power button is you'll see a lil outline. Flick this area with your finger a few times. Flick it hard enough to mildly hurt your finger but not the phone. I had to do this for a while till I got a new note. If that doesn't help take it apart at your own risk.

It has always started up on its own when you plug it in, at least if it's out of charge. Of that I'm certain. I've had the phone a year and a half or so now. It may not boot up on it's own if you just manually shut it off and plug in a charger though. I don't recall ever trying that scenario directly. It could also be a functionality Slimbean added if stock phones don't do it.
I did just try your flick trick though, thanks. No change.
Just as another example on the power button, I can take the battery out and put it back in and the phone will do nothing until i hold the power button down a few seconds, only then does it do the the "i'm trying to boot" vibration.
Damn I was really hoping the flick trick worked for you like it did me. If you decide to take the back of the phone off, try flicking again anyways before you completely disassemble it. Once you disassemble it, there really isn't much you can do power button wise other than replace it. I'll attach a pic of the power button area for ya. I have one already torn down.
If it's not your power button, I wonder if it's your usb charger port on the phone.... That's an easier part to replace if it is.
I do feel like the USB port is a possibility, even despite my saying it appears to work. is it possible for the port to be damaged in such a way that it still allows the phone to be charged but not establish a data connection? When the phone went brick yesterday It had pretty much just finished fully charging. I had disconnected it from the charger used it a little bit, set it down when it still at about 98% battery life. Around 10 minutes later I got a text message, it made the god awful slimbean text tone (i hate that tone) I went to check it, turned on the display it then repeated the incoming text message tone about five more times in quick succession, locked up, and then died never to return.
I have had the phone apart before because i'm a curious cat, and didn't really mind voiding a warranty.
The only things that would make me skeptical of it being a usb port problem is. 1: It was charging fine and 2: the symptoms at least of the reboot problem itself are leaning towards a software issue the Slimbean install has never really worked great, and would crash and reboot probably twice a day.
Just because the button works doesn't mean it isn't stuck. I've only saved about ten phones by helping the owner to understand the cause of the reboots.
The fact that you already opened the phone increases the chance its the button. Because you said it rebooted on stock or custom ROMs eliminated software. Because your phone charges normally and is recognized by a pc shows its not the usb port.
But hey, what do I know. . .

He has more than one problem. He can NOT get a pc to recognize it. I missed it first too and had to re-read it a few times. So it could be the port, or the power button.
I think your options are....
-Find a repair center nearby
-Send it in for repair
-Find out which part is cheaper and replace that yourself first.
Sounds good. The usb port is cheap and easy and while the bezel is off you can verify the power button isn't stuck in its hole in the bezel.
Because he flashed a custom ROM from a stock ROM I took that to mean he had to connect to a pc through the usb port, either to Odin flash a recovery or Odin flash Slimbean. And he can still charge it. And data cables go bad, removing drivers doesn't take them out of memory, etc. So usb port isn't 100% bad for sure, but you're right, its a cheap, easy repair.

If the button is 'stuck' it implies that the it's either stuck engaged or disengaged correct?
If that were true and lets say it were stuck engaged, the power button should be acting as if it is pressed. Which at first would make sense when i say it reboot cycles. It however does not make sense that i can get into download mode and the phone never shuts off until I hit the power button.
It also does not make sense that if i pull the battery out and put it back in the phone does nothing. until i hit the power button. If it were stuck engaged the phone would immediately try to boot when i put the battery back in.
The rom has also been on it for awhile now, 6 months? So i don't exactly remember the processes i went through but i know i never got kies or odin to recognize it. And Yeah, pc wont recognize it now even tryin two different pcs, one of which has never had a samsung device connected to it.
That said I wont rule the power button out either, Is there a good way to check the power button with a multimeter?
I should also say I have the phone apart now so i could at least do external checks of the power button since you both thought it was a possibility, externally it looks fine the actual button inside the case (the little white button the big silver one hits) acts fine but the circuit inside could still be screwed i suppose, which is why i ask about a meter test.
Ultimately I think you're both right though, I'm just going to have order a replacement button and port. Start with the port since it's easier, and if that doesn't enable me to connect it to the pc to flash it try the button too.
Since you mention the ROM, it is possible to have a bad download, flash the ROM, and get into a bootloop. The usual cure for that is a re-download of the ROM, wipe caches, wipe system, and flash fresh ROM.
The sticking power button is a common fault of Samsung phones. Its not broken, but it just gets a little out of alignment in its hole in the bezel. If you already wiggled and snapped, you would have noticed a difference in the phone's behavior, unless there's lint under it.
I think you have your plan -- replace the usb port, and check the button while the phone is without the bezel.
The usb port is on ebay and there is a Youtube video for the process. Everything is here:

Good luck.
Thanks for the Help Ranger and 440.

I'm going to try the phone tonight on a friends PC. Who doesn't have another note but at least has a Samsung Gs2 and 3 that connect to Kies and see if i can get it to establish a connection.
If anybody else has any ideas on troubleshooting the connection between the device and a PC i'm all ears.
Good luck!

Well interestingly, when i hooked it up to the friends pc (using one of the same usb cables i already had) not only did his pc recognize it, the phone also booted up immediately. with 15% battery life remaining.
Strange strange.
