Why didn't you ask this question in the Villian ROM thread? I keep seeing these very personalized one liner threads that just clutter up the forums when they could be easily asked in an existing thread...
You will not be able to update via Kies in the future but need the Odin /custom route .

New users aren't allowed in the Development section.
When you've installed VR, you won't get KIES updates.
Given the unreliability of KIES, I would never use it to update personally...
You can install future VR updates via ODIN, just like normal. Perhaps I'll even make a way to update OTA? All depends on if I ever actually get this blasted SGS2...
no, the rom works well so far

i want to use cf-root in my Phone, but before i do it, I need to now if this will erase my personal data...
Thanks for the help.

No it won't

dr.m0x is right. it won't erase any personal data ... The only thing it does is (as far as i know) install a different kernel and install a different recovery program.
PS And btw it also installs the programs SuperSU and CWM
One question about this: is it true that I can't get ota updates after applying cf root? Instead I have to flash them with odin?

There may be a problem with OTA updates, if they work your device will probably be unrooted though so you just have to root it again

Well if you having this problem with OTA, you can always update via Kies which was working fine for me. I was in XXALF6 and rooted and managed to update to XXBLFB via Kies, but all modification, root and custom kernel gone.
Thanks for the help...
I had installed the old version of ClockworkMod Touch. Now, I'm trying to update by Odin and is not working. This has happened with some of you? Thanks!
Hi
Try this, even I managed it and I'm a noob to flashing and rooting.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719744
Hope it helps
I already tried that. But ClockworkMod continues in the old version. Although saying that Odin was successfully completed, the ClockworkMod not change.
Flash the firmware after reading the instructions.

May I know why you are not able to use Odin?
That is a very simple way to root.
It depends on your current firmware/kernel. I was able to flash and never used Odin I've rooted the phone using exynos abuse as I had really vulnerable kernel, then I installed Recovery by rom manager and flashed stuff from the open recovery. But make sure that exynos abuse works for your firmware before using it and make sure you know what you are doing and don't touch anything else then root option in this program
I install samsung kies. But still when i connect my S3 to my PC nothing happen. Sorry for my bad english

The date of purchase means nothing. I know that you have stock firmware, but there are many stock firmware versions (even if all are 4.1.2) and they have different vulnerabilities. I was at XXELL4 kernel at stock, which is old and vulnerable, but you may be on one of the newest kernel which can't be abused without ODIN. Please take more time to read guides and get more familiar with the phone, as your next post might start by "I've bricked my phone, please help" You will survive few days at stock rom and it seems that you don't know the basics

KIES & Odin do not play well together, hence you should deinstall KIES in case you want to use Odin, will save you a lot of time solving connection issues.
Otherwise as mentioned.

Do not use Kies!
All you need to do is install the drivers of your phone and once that is
done and Kies is opened infront of you open, go to
Task Manager > Processes > Remove All Kies Related Applications
and then use Odin to root your phone.
1. Provide us with kernel version.
2. Are you on ICS/JB?
3. Are you on OS X? If you are use Heimdall; Mac alternative to Odin. Otherwise there is no reason why you should use anything other than Odin/Heimdall, just flash CF Root.
what do you need root for? if you don't know the difference between Kies and Odin, don't root it, you'll brick it
So my S2 died the other day and I went to buy a i9300. Now I've been searching about S3 rooting and I've found conflicting info on this.
So when I first rooted my old S2 I did it with a temporary CWM that disapeared ofter reboot stayed in stock with stock kernel and kies was able to update my firmwsre without deleting root. I actualy updated from 2.3.5 to ICS via kies without removing root or loosing it after.
I was wondering if the same could be done with the i9300 I want to remain stock for now and don't want to replace stock recovery with CWM. Is there a temporary CWM for S3 so I can push the SU binary to system part without flashing anything over stock?

I did try the search button. The only thing i found was someone talking about the new recovery in S3 only flashing signed packages from samsung or something like that.
Thats why i opened a new thread to see if someone had some new info on it.

CF-AUTO ROOT. Installs only the SuperSU app. Does not install custom recovery. Dunno about updates, though. I think it supports OTA.

Use CF Auto Root from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273 Download Odin and the CF auto root for your phone all instructions are on this thread
You can still update via Kies as long as everything is kept stock even though its rooted but you wont get any OTA updates that wont work

Yes the update will remove root but after update simply flash root with odin again, only takes a few minutes
