Has anyone noticed if you type in or even tap a link for a website that happens to have an app you are forced to the market for the app.
Type in http://www.speedtest.net in the default browser.
Even if I tap the link in a text message it goes to market.
Even if you click on the home page link in the market it sends you right back to market.
This only happens with the default browser. Using another browser doesn't redirect.
Has anyone figured out a way around this?

Wow, I hadn't seen that yet, but you're right. Goes right to the market, or play, or whatever you want to call it.
wow so annoying! i never use the stock browser so i hadn't noticed. i wonder what goes through marketbutt idiot's minds when they come up with this [email protected]?
Actually even if you tap the link in my post it redirects to the market regardless which browser you tell it.
Even more annoying.

It redirects you because you're user agent setting in the browser is set to Android. Set it to desktop and you'll get in. If you don't see user agent in your browser's settings, try typing about:debug in the address bar, then go into settings and see if it's there. I'm using a X2 right now and running cm7 so the setting is always there. Before cm7 though, typing that in the address bar would add another item in the settings. Debug maybe? I don't remember. Anyway, I'd find it in that extra entry in the settings.
Can't say for sure at the moment as I don't have a Razr right now. It's ordered and will be here tomorrow. Otherwise, I'd check it out myself. Only problem is the setting doesn't stick. Reboot your phone and the next time you use the browser, you have to do it again.
I pulled Opera Mobile from the market at set it as desktop and it works. But stuck with desktop versions all the time.
I realize that it only happens with very few sites but it's ridiculous that google would not pop up a choice instead of forcing me to market for an app that's already installed. Thanks for the advice.

I tried Dolphin HD, set it to desktop and good to go.
That's one annoying feature I never saw on my OD Droid X.
Using dolphin browser hd, your link directed me to the intended website.

This worked for me. Thanks! I don't know if it will survive a reboot, though. It added a new set if options in the settings menu under "debug." I changed "set UAString" from Android to Desktop. There were options for iPhone and Froyo N-1 also.

Hey guys just wanted to share this with everyone in case no one knew this. You can change the default setting on your browser so it doesn't show the mobile sites all the time. To do this type in the browser address bar about: debug then press go. Nothing will happen but then go to settings and scroll all the way down til u see UAString. Click that and you will see ALL the options it gives you, like iphone, desktop, ipad, android ect. Hope this helps!!

Didn't work for me. I've done this for my tablet and that worked fine. Just to confirm, I should type "about: debug", correct?
Yes u it NO SPACE them click go. Dont get out of the browser and click settings and scroll allllll the way to the bottom

Confirming that it works in Maxtron browser as well.

This works, thanks for the post. One thing I notice is that if you reboot your phone, or if you end the Browser task, you need to re-do about:debug for it to load the custom UA again.

yes I can confirm that after you end the browser you have to redo it.
Is there a way to make the user agent string stick so we don't have to keep changing it back after a reboot or closing the browser completely? This browser is forcing mobile sites with no way to get the full site unles the website has a link for desktop version on their page. This and the fact there's no way to go directly to my home page using menu just sucks.
I seem to have messed up my settings in the default browser, I'm getting redirected to mobile versions of some websites. I can't seem to find a setting to make 'desktop' the default. I can do it fine with Dolphin though.
Can someone point me to the setting?
in the address bar type about:debug hit enter than go to settings and go to debug

If you re not rooted, UA string: desktop won't stick. Root and install Doc's modded framework is the only permanent solution at the moment. Or else one round about is to set the start page to "about:debug" and press enter twice before going ok to your favorite site. Once to activate UA string(but you dont need ro go into settings itself since bizarrely that sticks). And once more to deactivate debugvso you dont seethe wweird java notification on websites.
yes. Docs launcher is the way to go for browser desktop settings.
I upgraded to ICS yesterday and everything seems great. The only issue I have is that I can't find out how to put the stock browser into desktop mode. I found a menu option for "request desktop
site" but it seems to need to be checked everytime you visit the site. Any ideas how to get this turned on permanently?
There may be a way to do it in debug mode but luckily someone has made a version of the stock browser with just such an option easily available!

Had the same problem just ended up getting ics + browser from the market. Fixed my problem.
wish i had an answer...
probably why everyone uses other browsers like dolphin, or opera...
Ya its weird. The option to do it was in honeycomb but they seem to have forgotten to include it in ICS
You have to type in "about:debug" then go into settings, then into developer or something. Should be in there, under like UA String

I don't seem to have this problem with bookmarked sites. Once I set the drop menu option, add to bookmarks, it will work every time.
For non bookmarked sites it seems to be iffy. Most of the time it continues to work, but sometimes not.
ICS Stock Browser desktop option has something seriously wrong. I cant get pages to load after enabling it. I have to go into system settings and clear cache to make it load pages again. Anyone else having this problem?

I think that this is one of the biggest problems with the stock ICS browser, and its one that has made it unusable for me. I'm moving to Dolphin HD until Google release some kind of fix for this, preferably returning to the old way of setting the user string.
Download ICS browser in the market, the stock is total embarrassment to ICS.
or PC browser ported to Android tablets because I'm tired of getting redirected to mobile phone friendly pages of websites when my Transformer Prime has the same resolution as my 12.1" laptop and thus is capable of displaying websites at the same size.
Why does it look like there's nothing being done about this?
Why does this browser even give off the detail to websites as if the system it's operating on is a mobile phone. There should least be a way to turn this feature off. I'm annoyed by it.
Lots of browsers in the market allow you to disable the mobile version. E.g. ics+ browser.

+1 ICS browser+ is great desktop view option owns!
Problem solved. Downloaded the Dolphin browser from the Marketplace.
This browser looks amazing and is loaded with features. I've already set it to my default browser. The default ICS browser even makes Internet Explorer seem amazing.
HAHAHAHA
Maybe better then IE8. On par with IE9 i would say.
Boat Browser is the best one out there by far imo.
Once you try xScope you stop trying the other ones.
xScope is my favorite and I've tried them all

Desktop browsing with Stock Browser - no additional software needed
If you would prefer the Desktop view of websites, rather than the Mobile view, then there is an easy way to change it without using any third party app.
Open the standard browser and type about:debug into the browser's address bar. Then go to Menu > Settings. You should have a new option called Debug. Press Debug, then on the right side press UAstring and change the option to Desktop.
Websites should now be displayed as they would on a computer desktop browser.
Other options are: iphone, ipad, android (default), honeycomb.
Thanks..

Try this:
1) Make a new shortcut to a website (doesn't matter which one, this is just a workaround)
2) Edit that newly created shortcut, make the URL point to 'about:useragent' (without the quotes)
3) If you click on the shortcut nothing will happen. BUT if you now click on the addres bar of the browser the URL should be there. Just press enter.
4) Select the client you want your device to mimic
This doesn't save the client, so you will have to repeat steps 3 & 4 every time you restart the browser. But is a tiny bit more comfortable than editing a configration file I think
So, I`m having an issue with my stock thunderbolt on latest update, I've been wanting to use a more feature rich browser such as dolphin, but no matter what I do, such as clear default for stock browser or choose make dolphin default browser in dolphin settings the stock browser always returns to the default browser. Just to be clear what I am trying to do is if I click on a link to read more in rssdaemon I want it to open the article in the browser of my choice. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to manage apps & open the current default browser then tap clear default.
To set a new default tap on something that will need a browser (URL links),
when you get the pop up check "set as default" then tap on the browser app that you want to set as default.
This should work, always has for me, but I don't run stock roms.
If you're saying you've done this and it doesn't work, then I apologize and don't really have another suggestion.

Thanks I've tried this but I don't get the popup. Its weird because normally with any other app that can be set as default when I clear the default the button stays grayed out until I set it by the way you explained, but even after I clear the default if I go back to previous (all applications screen) then back into the app the clear default button can be pressed again like it already set itself as the default again.

You can thank Apple for suing HTC and HTC for not paying Apple to continue to use the features they had before.
The "App Associations" was removed due to the recent legal shenanigans.
So, either go back to the previous official build, or root and throw a custom rom on there.
Those are your choices for now it seems.
Possible workaround if you plan to keep the updated stock rom.

Yeah, the whole thing just stinks!
Here is something else you may try, but I do not know for sure if it will work or apply to the latest Thunderbolt stock rom or not.
in build.prop you will have this line
ro.da1.enable=true
change to
ro.da1.enable=false
then add just below that this line
ro.da1.method=false
This method restores the feature on some roms/devices
Download an app called Home Smack. It's a home switcher but also does browsers and a few others. Works well!

I don't have root so therefore I don't believe this is an option for me, thanks though.
I must say I am very disappointed with HTC's move in the current update, I didn't see any mention of this change, frankly it ticks me off this has been a native feature of android for quite sometime and for HTC to block it makes me loose respect for them and I do believe this will probably be my last device from them, I understand it is in response to Apple, but Android manufactures need to take a stand against all this nonsense from Apple, I know it goes both ways, but this hurting the customer in the end, but then again what company really truely cares, only thing that matters is the bottom line.
Edit: update: Just found out that HTC added option under Settings > Applications > App associations, which allows you to switch what app launched when you click on a url link or whatever else, so cheers!
All android devices had to remove this aspect of the browser. If you think you'll pick up a Samsung and it's going to work that way it won't. They sued Google. Not HTC. All the phone manufacturers were included because they run android.
