I think this question has been asked before, but I still want to see if someone can answer me. I tried to hook up my 500gb external hard drive to my TP, with OTG cable and a isound portable charger. My hard drive turns on but have no sign say it's connected and can't find under folder explorer. Is it not possible for a hard drive? Also if I buy a Y-cable for usb thumb drive, can I watch movie directly from it? Thank you.
Have you tried StickMount?

Also, are you sure the power source is outputting enough juice to fully power the drive?
im using usb host controller (found it somewhere here on xda) and root explorer, works perfectly!
but your hdd must be formated in FAT32, NTFS is not working correct me if im wrong or anything has released wich provides this feature
A bit related these software/methods can work with a camera too?

just ordered one on ebay (only an adapter from normal usb to micro-usb) for 1$.
Along with the otg cable u also need a usb Wye cable...the need is to provide power (plugged into the wall) for the usb hub (which u will also need ). Not Neuf power and the drives will not mount. Getting a solar powered usb hub cuts away the cables and detached u from the wall...I got mine on Amazon for bout 20 $. Totally worth it.

As some of you know, I could get USB host to work on the release candidate of HoneyComb but not on the final release (3.55.405).
This morning I thought I would try again, my flyer was turned off (completely shut down) when I plugged in my portable hard drive (Seagate 120 gig using the Y cable one to a power supply the other to a USB micro USB adaptor).
I then booted up the Flyer … low and behold there it was. Shows up as USB in Astro but, does not show in Root Explorer.
I was able to watch my movies and play my music from the hard drive.
It seems like the flyer with latest HoneyComb will only see USB peripherals at boot time.
Great news!
If you care to try some other configurations, I'd love to get your results when using a usb keyboard or mouse?

Will do … just keep in mind that any device well need to be self powered (because the Flyers port does not provide power) I’ll try with a powered hub.

It works perfectly fine without rebooting. The only thing is that you have to umnount before unplugging. It worked for me even with one 1TB Harddisc.

What Rom are you using? Most of us have been unable to get Usb host working on the latest HoneyComb release.
Edit: just tried again and won’t work for me unless I boot with it plugged in. Also, booting takes a longer than normal time.

I don´t use a custom rom I use the HC stock rom. You have to have the "/mnt/sdcard/usb/" folder. If you don´t have it, create it. I use only as I mentioned a 1 TB Harddisk and I used also two different kind of 8GB USB Flashdrives with a Y-Cable with external powersupply and a Nokia OTG Cable.
They work all perfectly fine. Only I had to unmount the devices before I unplugged otherwise I needed to reboot as well for a another usb device.
I didn´t try any other peripherals.
I am not a "tecfreak", just an average user who likes to tinker and mess around with his gadgets. If you have any further question I can help you with, Please ask.
P.S.: before I used the Nokia Cable, I used another Micro USB Male to USB A Female Cable and that didn´t work, so If it doesn´t work for you than it might be caused by the wrong cable. ????

Been doing some more testing … I noticed (when using the Y cable on my drive) that when I power up the hard drive the charging light on the Flyer comes on.
So, somehow power is back feeding to the OTG cable.
This leads me to believe that it may work better (like Elfuente stated) with a different cable.
Perhaps the Nokia cable does not have the charging pins
Ps: I noticed that on my Y cable … one is labeled Power+Data the other is labeled Power
I had a rather long message typed about this but the browser crashed, I'll possibly retype most of that later, but for now suffice to say that cables are singnificant in these setups.

Ahhh there you are I was hoping you would show up. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be you. Do I smell another hardware hack?
Keeping in mind my abilities in this field are very limited but, I was thinking … if I could come up with a battery pack for a portable hard drive I could (with the proper cables) then just plug it in and have the ability to read and write to it.
Maybe another hack for an adapter to provide power from a battery with usb connector or mains usb charger but it should actually be fairly trivial to implement, so maybe a schematic also for anyone who is remotely comfortable with soldering.
The big difference between OTG and other usb modes is that pin 5 is electrically significant. When grounded it indicates to an otg capable device that it should go to OTG-A mode (OTG equivalent of host mode), when floating it's ignored and the device will not detect a connected device.

I ordered one of the Nokia cables and if it works for me.
I’ll then take both apart (drive and battery) and mill up a case to mount both of them in.
This only works with honey comb right?
and by the way, the disc has to be formated wit fat32.
... and yes I formated a 1TB harddisc with fat32, look here; http://www.thetfp.com/tfp/tilted-te...-formatting-large-hard-drives-32gb-fat32.html
Today, a friend asked if I had an extra laptop. He needed one for his 10 year old son.
While rummaging through my closet (you know, the one with all the old computers, shotguns, and half empty Jack Daniels bottles) when I found one of these.
Two Pics … http://db.tt/GY4wfof6 and http://db.tt/rzkodoMi
Now, I have no idea as to how, where or when I got this. I had to search the net to even know what it was.
Ebay link … http://www.ebay.com/itm/230328510631?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2648
Continuing my search of the closet I also found a 2.5 inch 160 gig IDE hard drive. Assembled the two and I now have a portable battery powered drive that works great with my Flyer.
That looks kinda old school. =)
So you connect to the flyer via bluetooth or microUSB?
It connects with microUSB.
Now that I’ve had a chance to use it a while I’ve found I can set its switch to PC or DC.
When set to PC I just plug it in to my Flyer and can copy files both ways.
When set to DC it will function as a standalone unit (because it has its own battery power). I can plug thumb drives and USB sdcard adaptors into it to move files both ways.
It will even plug into my camera and copy the pictures.
Kind of handy as the Flyer doesn’t supply power at its microUSB port to spin a hard drive.
It’s not what I call well built but seems to work.
At least it does the job! I didn't know we could use OTG harddrive for the flyer...
That's very cool. Vastly increases the number of movies I could take with me on a long trip!

Yes using a standard micro usb cable
Try this ... Shut down your Flyer (make sure Fast Boot is unchecked in settings) then turn on your drive in DC mode and restart your Flyer.
Your Flyer should find it then and will work from then on.
Using your file explorer of choice you should see a new folder called USB
Hi, tried this but still no go. Ran a USB host and USB OGB diganostics app which still fail to detect the device. The drive works with my camera/Samsung phone and brothers PSP. May have to fork out for WIFI drive.
Still no go with the OTG device. Tried with a friends Flyer and same results. I am going to try this device, is fairly cheap.

I have an OTG cable from my samsung but this did not work. what OTG cable are you using? I gather you are connecting the USB device into the OTG cable via a powered hub?
Got it working but it's a hackjob, was going to root but having to downgrade then upgrade again was a pain and was not guaranteed to work. Tried running the OTG cable into a powered hub but for what ever reason would always come up USB device not recognised when plugging in any memory device. Tried 3 USB hubs with the same result. Ended up cutting up an OTG cable and a few other USB cables so I could provide power to the device and then power to the tablet as well. For whatever reason i need to provide power to he memory stick before plugging into tablet. I have tested 4 different memory pens and 1 external harddrive and they all work.
I just bought a generic OTG cable, its about 6 inches long. I think it may have come from HP. I have used both a powered hub and a y-usb hard drive cable and both worked for me.
You have to have power on the device before you plug it onto the FLyer so that on connect the Flyer software knows what type of device it is and can load the driver. Otherwise the Flyer will label it unknown and disable the device.
Managed to get USB on the go to work on my Jetstream. See the following post. as the flyer very similar, should work for flyer too.

*This is only a reference/information thread for those who want to use OTG feature on our 2011 xperia phones, for your convenience.
(For that Sony Ericsson didn't tell you how to use that feature.)
Information for xperia mini, mini pro, LWW and Active.(since they share similar chipsets)
TESTED ON GB 2.3 Stock rom with wt19i.
1. USB OTG support is native on stock roms.
2. Almost every USB keyboard and mouse can be used with OTG.
3. Some special keys on the keyboard may NOT work(such as volume up/down buttons).
4. Key bindings may NOT work. e.g. Ctrl + C won't work in terminal apps such as connectbot or terminal emulator. Consider twice if you want to use keyboard for terminal.
5. To use USB flash drives, you have to use OTG helper from shardul_seth from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1588979
6. (with OTG helper) USB drives will be mounted @ /sdcard/usb_stick_1/ (or something similar)
7. USB hubs CAN be used.
8. Portable hard-drives can be used although it needs external power source.
9. Using these USB devices with your phone can DEPLETE YOUR BATTERY rather quickly.
10. Pen tablets won't work. (Tested device: Wacom Banboo)
11. USB card readers might NOT work. (Some do, some don't. I tested a card reader with multiple slots(MS Pro, microSD, SD) and my wt19i failed to recognize it.)
12. USB flash drives larger than 16GB might NOT work. (As reported from Taiwanese forums.)
13. Some USB joysticks will work, some won't. (No drivers for Android
I will keep testing USB devices though. Thread will be updated in the future.
Attachment is my own wt19i with an USB keyboard.
Preserved for future use.

Also I tried wireless (RF) mouse/keyboard branded acktec and worked great.

@x.x.x.Peria The reason why Playstation 3 controller fails to work is that the phone cannot provide sufficient power supply. With proper programming and enough power, it is supposed to work. It can be used on the phone with bluetooth, however.

If I use an USB HUB with external power, it will work? My target is use an USB HUB with external power to supply energy for a mouse, a keyboard, a pen drive and my phone. Or just to reduce the battery consumption. I know HUB powered by USB works fine.
PS: with OTG cable, my homemade one: kingston pendrive 8GB works, lenovo mouse and keyboard works, leadership mouse and keyboard (with a nice number of special keys) works, Bright wireless mouse with usb adapter works, bluetooth usb dongle don't works (needs driver), and with a USB OTG cable you can recharge another phone haha. * I'm using ICS at St15i.

Interesting.
With powered hub, I connected a PS3 controller and reading the kernel log with dmesg, seems to be recognized and installed but don't works and starts to charge, without my phone at hub the controller don't charge. Other devices work normal, and the phone is not in charge mode :silly:.

Thanks aznrogerazn, I have the Sixaxis app working good, is a nice app is it?
But, check this out, I have a nice news hahaha. I managed to work the PS3 controller by USB. So: I have a 7 ports powered hub, and it can be powered by usb also. I plugged my otg cable in Android and the cable at the HUB, then I plugged the power cable, after this, I connected the PS3 controller at HUB, the lights at the controller will blink if in charge mode or blink only once if the battery is full, and unintentionally, I hit the button with the PlayStation logo, and voilà: the controller works! I noticed what the touchscreen gets a strange behavior... I saw this same behavior when a friend used an non oficial usb cable to charge the xperia x8, an ordinary cable... like if the touchscreen got messy. But the controller and the rest works. So give a try, with a powered HUB and plug all, then hit the PS logo. I noticed also what the usb host mode can be disabled sometimes, is just restart the phone or plug a mouse or something to get work again.
I will make a video maybe or take some photos in another thread.
EDIT: The strange behavior of the touchscreen is caused by the power, I mean, when I connect the power cable. I think this happens because there is no filter of energy in the circuit. Maybe a high quality HUB solve the issue. The touch screen become normal again when the ordinary power cable got disconnected.
EDIT 2: About the crazy touch see this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10206146&postcount=8. The power cable of the USB HUB is an ordinary 5V 1000mA, thats is the problem.
EDIT 3: I made a video but I won't open a new thread xP

Hello All, I also confirm that the Drives are supported I also use 1TB Hard drive connected but to achive that I have the Tab2 7" the original samsung usb adapter for OTG then I connect a USB hub with double USB cable one to connect to a usb charger and the another end to the samsung adapter, the I connect the Drive to one of the USB inputs of the hub and you can use the drive ( I have it formatted as FAT32) and I think I can access the hole drive. I have like 500Gb used and at least I can see all the folders I have. I think I also was able to connect other devices at the same time without problems. (Usb mouse and keyboard).
I am not sure if the trick is the USB hub as in my Playstation if I connect the 1TB drive it is not detected but if I connect the hub with the drive then it is detected and had no issue to access it. Probably it is the same for android devices. =S
If someone need to use the hard drive in windows and in the tablet I suggest to prefer NTFS file system..
With PARAGON exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ we can mount hard drive without format it and we can use use as same as a flash drive
For an external hard drive 3,5" we need the wall plug, so we only need to connect the USB through the USB otg adaptor and here to the tablet
If we have a 2,5" hard drive without wall plug there are a few methods:
Use a USB hub with a wall plug and connect it with a Y cable (with this method we can connect other devices like mouse or keyboard)
Use a small USB wall plug and connect it with a Y cable
This two method are the easier but we need a wall plug, I'm trying right now to make small USB battery charger so we can go out and use the hard drive for some hours.
Another solution is to buy an SSD and connect it through a hard disk bay for data to usb interface
With his small amount of current I think it doesn't require a wall plug, but it costs so much for now..
Hello everyone, Im not sure if this topic has been discuss in detail or not, but I have managed to connect a spare 500gb hard drive to my note 3. Here is everything I used.
I upgraded my laptop to a Samsung 250gb SSD, which provided me with a spare HDD:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MZ-7T...=1387366438&sr=8-2&keywords=samsung+250gb+ssd
It comes with a cable already in it (USB 2.0) so this next item is optional, A Apricorn USB 3.0 Transger cable:
http://www.amazon.com/Apricorn-Note...qid=1387366498&sr=8-1&keywords=apricorn+clone
And lastly, it needs to connect to the phone, so I picked up this USB 3.0 OTG cable:
http://www.amazon.com/White-Color-M...7366411&sr=8-3&keywords=galaxy+note+3+usb+otg
Now here is the steps I took.
Since my HDD still had stuff on it, and it was partitioned, I had to wipe it clean. I formatted the HDD on my computer first. I formatted it to exfat. Maybe another way will work but I'm not testing it. I then hooked up all the wires accordingly and plugged it into my phone. The N3 did not recognize the file format of the HDD so I re-formatted it to the N3 standard. After that, it is as simple as plug and play. I was even able to use the stock My Files app.
Note*** obviously the SSD is not a requirement, unfortunately, I am unable to test it as it has been in my computer for several months and I dont want to risk corrupting anything. It may work with the SSD as well, although I doubt it will reach the speeds it can on a computer.
I am not rooted and did not have to download anything extra for it.

This. We were using a variant setup, pushing the content via DLNA to our Xbox 360 (connected to a good ole 'dumb' tube TV). Quite enjoyable.
Damn I didnt even know you could do this
Has anyone found a way to pass through power with a splitter or something so while connecting the USB OTG cable you could still run the phone off of power without depleting the battery? I asked this same question in the Note 8 forum but no one found a way.

I'm sure it can be done. That would be ideal. I have the 10,000mah zero Lemmon battery set to notify me when it's available again. I'll look around for a spilter

what format was the hdd in exFAT or NTFS ?
I use the OTG dongle to hook up my 1TB drive and play movies and TV shows directly from the drive.
(Also works with the tablet)
I formatted it to exfat. I have a 1tb external also. But it's already formatted to ntfs. And it's full so I'm not going to risk losing a thing on it.

This is awesome! I have an otg on order from Amazon. I was hoping to use a Logitech wireless receiver for my mouse, and a large 3.0 usb when needed.

Do not remember where, maybe mono price, but have seen micro USB 2.0 to USB 'A' female splitters.

Because it's not supposed to work that way... The OTG cable puts your device in "host" mode... so it will use the phones power to run your HDD and kill the ability to charge... there are ways to get power to the HDD so you don't drain your device battery as much but the charging thing is a native function of OTG switching.
This is what i've been using... it has HDMI out ... microUSB 5v input to run the HDD... USB port for HDD or any other USB device... (using a wireless keyboard on it right now)... and card reader ports...
You can fake this thing into trying to charge the phone by plugging in the micro USB connection first and THEN plugging the hub into the phone with the microUSB power already on... then you see the charge notification in the status bar but it still doesn't charge the device... even with the samsung 2amp charger as a power supply... the battery still drains
What about wireless charging? I Don't have a wireless charger or battery cover to test this. But this may work

That actually is a good idea to try. I'm less optimistic about that as my previous experience with wireless charging has shown that it is less efficient t getting current to the phone as a wired connection and there are some things done on your phone that even when plugged to a 2A wired connection will still drain the battery.
What about the Smart dock? With 2 USB ports an HDMI and power in?

That's the problem I'm running into... I'm running the HDMI/MHL/OTG hub... I got the HDMI out to my flat screen... OTG to a wireless keyboard... bluetooth mouse... When it all hooks up properly (you have to plug everything in the right order) the Note 3 screen shuts off and it runs as a proper CPU with output to the flat screen...but even with the samsung 2 amp charger plugged in I still lose about 1% battery every 5 minutes... better than running without the charger but that s$#t can't be good for the battery running that hard and charging at the same time AND losing the battle.
