I've tried it with Chomp SMS, yahoo mail, k9 mail, Handcent SMS, the default cm7 SMS app and the stock email app.
Supposedly it doesnt work with the latest Gmail, but it is in fact it only things its ever worked with. Odd huh?
Can anyone give me a hand?
Many thanks!

I used to use these for ADW andGO launcher, but it's another service/process that runs all the time so I normally don't use. They show notification icons over dialer/SMS when used with the correct launcher

Does anyone know how to get the number of messages to show next to the contact's name in the stock SMS/MMS app? Thanks in advance.

I do not see an option for it, which leads me to believe that you will have to use a 3rd party SMS app if you want that feature.
Hey! try usin go sms or handcent sms from the market!

I would defiantly give handcent a go its got some pretty good extras also like multicoloured notification LED light depending on event and also you can show a SMS when the screen is locked for quick reply.
Well that's the thing, I meant without a third-party app, like it is on stock Android. I've had Go SMS, but I prefer to have notification icons that actually match with the app, I guess.

I finally got around to uninstalling the stock messaging app and I noticed I wasn't getting MMS messages anymore even with Handcent installed. I wasn't even getting the text that came with the pic. After reinstalling the stock app the MMS messages worked again. Oh yeah, and this only prevented receiving MMS, not sending. Is this true for everyone or just me? lol
Its not a huge deal that I have to leave the stock messaging app installed but its redundant and takes up space.
I uninstalled mms.apk with no problems
I'm pretty sure the only third party text app that works well without stock is gosms pro.
Might want to talk with the miui developers they have mms working ob the evo4g. I was also having that trouble with aosp roms.

I was thinking of uninstalling the stock texting app as I use GO SMS Pro. You can actually input the settings into GO SMS, just rip them out of the stock app.
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to test Go SMS Pro. How does it compare to Handcent?

ChompSMS works well
So I have gone through go SMS. Handcent. chomp. The original messaging app. I like messanger 7. But I couldn't figure out how to send pics. I know u can get a theme to make go SMS pro look like it but. It's not as good. Is there something I could look at that could help me out? Thanks

The apps you listed are pretty much the most known and most used SMS apps. You might just be stuck with those. You can try an app called Pansi SMS. It's supposed to be very fast and light. But unfortunately that's about it in terms of SMS.
I tried most of the SMS apps available and settled on GO SMS. It has a ton tweaks and settings you can play with to make it your liking.
i see...................
,,,,,,,,,,,,,, go sms or iphone styled sms or messenger app sms or xms pro use one of these ................... if u r not comfortable with it try differnt launcher like 360 or adw they have in built sms app or exlauncher /go launcher

I gave Pansi a try and it was pretty lightweight and fast, but I remember switching back to stock for some reason. I think I had MMS problems with it before or something, can't really remember. But I hope it works good for you.
Hey guys.
I'm on nocturnal something or other running ics and sense 3.6. Everything works well except that my contact pictures don't show up on my contacts widget (i use golauncher) or on handcent.
I have my contacts synced with Facebook. In the contacts app the pictures show. On the contacts widget they don't. Same thing with messaging, in the stock messaging app the pictures show but not in Handcent.
Any ideas why? Thanks.

thanks. i had tried everything I could think of but not knowing the name of the problem i didnt know what to search for. that's an easy fix :-D
Chomp SMS, Handcent, or GO?
I started with Handcent on my htc hero a long time ago, but then I tried GO and I really liked the theme options. Fast forward to now, GO takes up a lot of memory and it feels heavy. I haven't used chomp, but i heard that it doesnt support group messages?
Opinions?
None of the above... Go Apps have always had memory issues as well as privacy concerns and the other 2 arent all that great. Your better off staying stock. You can get popup notification apps if that's what your looking for.

Personally, I like handcent, the stock app might be a little lighter, but I like the feel of handcent more.

+1 for Handcent. I hate apps that use a white background, and all the inverted Messages apps I've tried break the ability to send/receive mms.

Stock + SMS Popup all day every day.
Yeah, handcent with the darkness them and a few customizations is the s***. Lol. Always treated me good.
Plus I like their dev team, they seem pretty on top of things.

I've tried Go, Handcent, Chomp and Pansy. None have been as responsive as the stock app for me. They all feel sluggish. And I really wanted them to be better, I hoped they would be. But stock is it for me.
If aesthetics are more important to you, then try Handcent. And if the stock app is slow for some reason, I'd check your General message settings and try enabling auto-deleting messages. Use SMSBackup+ and they'll be backed up to your Gmail account if you ever need them again.

Well said, I'd prefer aesthetics over performance(within reason of course).
There aren't that many reputable ones, I say the OP should go try them all!
