Is there anyway to unlock the bootloader to gain perm root without htc dev and keeping warrenty?? If not should I return this phone and get one that can be? And if so, which phone would be best?

You're worrying over nothing. If the device is defective due to manufacterer defect, and breaks down becaue of said default. They will honor warranty/exchanges since they are the ones at fault. Now if you fragged your phone because of an oc, bad flash, wrong software, that's your own bad and you're on your own. Unless you have insurance and the phone met its untimely end under your vehicle.

Ok.. I have had 3 phones that I rooted and never had a problem. I just didn't want htc to tell Verizon that I did it and if something did happen that they wouldn't give me another.

if you want to unlock the bootloader and gain perm root
and still keep warrenty, then you should go with galaxy nexus.

Keep your fingers crossed that HTCdev site adds the Thunderbolt in the future, you may want to hit up craigslist and look up Thunderbolt in or near where you live. I know here in Arizona you can pay someone around 20 to 30 bucks and have them root it for you. Make sure they use the long root since I have heard bad things about one click devices having to do with the Thunderbolt. Good luck.

If your talking about HTC adding the thunderbolt to the bootloader unlocking site, then you must realize that it doesn't root your phone. It only unlocks the bootloader, and in turn void your warranty (don't think they won't flag your device when you use their tool).
Sure you'll be able to download a rooted RUU and flash it via hboot, and this might open the doors for a one click root app if your bootloader is already unlocked, but is that worth your warranty?

Oh I am sure they will come up with someway to keep track of the phone that do unlock, that is why I will continue to use the unlock method through ADB and the great hackers of android. Then when the phone takes a dump, I wont know where I left it and file a lost phone claim and attempt to fix it with all my might to have parts or a spare phone.

Solid plan. Always good to do things manually so if something messes up, you might know where and why it messed up, and how to fix it.

I doubt anything is ever going to come with an unlocked bootloader. People could mess up their phones and say it happened during an OTA. They won't be able to tell if it was really during an OTA or they did it themselves since the person would have S-OFF either way. They would either have to cancel their warranty or not have phones with unlocked bootloaders.
I understand the wait, but at least some word from Rev; 'hey guys still working on the 1.50 hboot unlock...' .
Here is what pisses me off royally. See, HTC is requiring users to sign a electronic document that bypasses the Magnuson Moss Act; requires manufactures to prove that the alteration is what caused the warranty claim. Ie, car owner comes to the dealership because engine blew. Dealership notices that owner put on aftermarket exhaust, dealership will not warranty the engine. HTC is technically bypassing all that stating that rooting your phone, you are opting out of any factory or extended warranty. Ie, phone no turny on, HTC > You = po3ned . Sure they'll take a look at it, only to tell you that it is now going to cost you $xxx.xx to fix it.
Its odd that they say unlock the phone but all they do is unlock the mmc protection to the file system and still void parts of the warranty.
The boot partition where the kernel lives is still protected and unflashable without using the work around.
Seems to me they are benefiting from this "unlock" more than anyone.

You make a very good point, but I have one word for you; partnership. If you go back and read HTC and Sprint's Terms and Agreements it states that by agreeing to the T&A you are allowing the sharing of information. If Sprint says that by agreeing to the unlock you void the 'manufacture's' warranty, then you are doing just that by agreeing to the unlock.
But again, I applaud you for thinking outside the box. For once some people are beginning to see behind the facade.

I jus bought a brand new mobilicity HTC amaze (299$) and so far its great. It came with a one year warranty and I am still thinking about whether or not I am going to root and flash a Rom. I know rooting it will void the warranty however, is there any way to cover up the fact that you rooted the phone so I could use the warranty if needed? Anyone else notice this has a 2 megapixel frontcamera? That's pretty sweet I don't know any other phone that has more than 1.3 megapixels. I have noticed some dust in it though, and I have read the related threads with no solutions available. Does anyone have a simple solution to this? I have covered the earpiece with a screen protector, maybe that will help.

You will ONLY void your warranty if they see that it's rooted, but because you have to unlock the bootloader to root all HTC phones, they will see that if you have to bring it in for repair. However, they don't really go into the bootloader of the phone. To be safe, if you need to take your phone in for repair or something, RUU the phone back to stock, and relock the bootloader
Okay, from what I understand, I can root my phone a thousand times and just relock it and they won't know the difference, correct? Thanks for your reply.

That is incorrect... If you relock the bootloader it will say "relocked" ... For it to say locked you have to be s-off before flashing the ruu
But as long as the problem you are sending it in for is a hardware problem and not a software problem, then it will most likely still be covered under warranty.
Hope that helps

Just curious.... has anyone ever looked at the contract lately. I was looking to see where it said anything about rooting devices but no dice. Can someone clear that up maybe with a link? Thank you
I don't believe the contract says anything about it, but the warranty on the other hand is a different story.

I always wondered, if you told Verizon you are or were rooted, do they write it down? So even if you unroot they will know your warranty is void?

I don't think they coordinate with vzw on that ... I would be very surprised I'd they did. But as for warranty... how would it void that?

First of all, they probably won't check the bootloader to see if you've unlocked it. And if you really wanna be precautious, you can revert back to locked, although it is an extensive process
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Honestly i really understand why unlocking the bootloader voids your warranty since you cant really break your phone being S-ON, now if you were S-OFF that is a whole other story. And honestly someone who is unlocked and/or rooted is likely to have enough experience to be able to fix almost any software related issue(not always the case though). Being unlocked and/or rooted shouldnt hold you back from sending it in for warranty. Although i have heard some people say it goes through warranty just fine being rooted and unlocked.

I don't know legally what they can do, but I've had a few conversations with the local reps in my area. They don't care if you phone is rooted as most of them have rooted phones. I was in with my dad the one day back when he was getting the Tbolt, and the rep noticed that my bolt was rooted. He said honestly, he would never recommend the bolt to someone who wasn't going to root it anyway. I've been told that they are a lot more lax about rooting now than they were in the past.
At the Verizon store near me, the only person that cares is the manager. The rest of the employees don't care
Sent from my Rezound using xda app-developers app
As far as I know Verizon doesn't care at all if you root, (I've unlocked the bootloader, relocked and sent in many Rezounds and they never cared) and HTC just tells you they have the right to not honor your warranty when you unlock your bootloader, at their discretion, but they almost always honor it.
Another thing, unless you have the extended warranty with Verizon (I think), your Rezound's warranty is handled by HTC, Verizon is just the middle man.
Legally Verizon can't do anything as it is legal for any consumer to root and do whatever the hell they want with the software on their phones, but they can choose not to honor your warranty if they feel your modifications are the reason the phone became faulty. Link http://www.intomobile.com/2010/07/26/iphone-jailbreak-and-android-root-declared-legal-in-us-feds-exempt-smartphone-hacks-from-dmca/
So your safe, have fun rooting worry free !
Isn't there a way to trick your phone so that Verizon can't tell you did it?

have you sent them back for legit problems? and what were you problems? (even if you made them up )
I think the only risk you would have is if they somehow found out you were tethering. It does day in the Verizon contact that you can't tether without using (and paying for) their service.
But I've also heard from countless people that they would never know. Unless you returned a phone with the tether app and files still in there.

Not 100% true. If you are doing a WiFi tether, where the device is acting as a hotspot they can tell because they can see more than one private IP being routed through your devices' public IP. This combined with the fact that you don't have hotspot on your account can be considered a breach of contract.
I recently sent my HTC one to HTC for resetting issues, I was issued an out of warranty fee. How did they find out my device had been unlocked at one point? I agree an unlocked device is almost impossible to hard brick...with the RUU it's impossible. So yea so long as you don't s off..but flashing roms takes money out of the carriers pocket and they can't persuaid you to purchase a new device to get that fancy upgrade.

Apparently at this time without the RUU for tmobile, if you unroot and relock, the bootloader will show relocked. If there is a way to not show relocked on the bootloader, maybe you someone can share the info.
Will this happen to me if I'm sending my phone to T-Mobile? I'm complaining for the camera issue.
There is an official RUU for T-Mobile, it also removed the ability to revone. Ry how have a fix for that by dropping back to the .8 RUU. You remove the relocked message by having s-off, then using revone commands to change unlocked to locked. This is in the revone posts

As soon as you unlock the bootloader to use REVONE you voided any warranty that isn't cosmetic damage to hardware pretty much, and you do say I understand this voids my warranty when getting that code to unlock through HTCDEV.... I'm confused as to your confusion OP.
