[Q] The new Opera Mini Next browser on Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.opera.mini.next.android
This new beta seems to have
1. Much lower memory footprint
2. Is much faster
3. Beautiful transitions!
3. Seems to work like a GPU accelerated app on Gingerbread!
which brings me to the question, is there any way a particular app can use GPU ui in Gingerbread. Not an NDK app, just a normal Dalvik-VM app.
Tested on GT-P1000

I was a fan of Dofin HD, then switched to Opera, a favorite, then switched back to the Fin HD since it seems to be lighter and faster.
I might give Opera another try and see how good it is.
But I definitely using stock WebBrowser when ICS released
Thanks OP

Give Opera Mini Next a try. It does have hardware acceleration says their press release though I don't understand how, on gingerbread.

Are there any hacks for it yet, like free 2g/3g internet?

does it have flash support this time? I loved it, but because of not supporting flash kinda bad...but i loved turbo mode =) saved like 60% internet

You can get Opera Mobile which has the same UI as Opera Mini only the download is larger since it can download and render pages locally, and also includes flash compatibility. Opera Mobile also allows you to toggle turbo mode, I have mine set to be on turbo when on 3G and use the local presto engine when on wifi.

Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 - SUPER FAST

This is an OLD Thread and for this reason decide to edit the topic and everything to be up to date.
New OPERA MINI 5 beta 2 is out, like a single cab and is native for WM devices.
All i can say for this...
ITS SUPERB FAST AND SMOOTH BROWSER i just love it.
For more info just visit www.opera.com
Check JZ SmartMort. Search for it at this forum.
Is there a signed version?
Yeah is there a signed version? Also, does it have a full download manager built in? And how is it better than Opera 10 beta?
http://www.opera.com/mini/next/
it says
Download manager
Manage downloads right from the browser. Pause and resume downloads to suit your needs.

so I guess there is a download manager
Just ran some tests on it. Its as fast as opera mobile 4.2 so I can gladly ditch that browswer. Opera 10 beta 2 is no were near as fast as mini 5 b2. Not really happy with the direction that one is going.
I have done some searching but there is nothing right now as far as shortcuts or default browser cabs. Must be to soon, so if anyone find anything post it here or a link to the thread.
Signed Opera 5 Beta 2 you can find here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592551

Thank you!! Exactly what I was looking for Now I gonna compare it to Mobile 10 beta 2... My guess is that mini is better as always... At least when running jbed...
awesome !!
Just create a cab... If someone want to test try it.
Is there a way to get this get a shortcut, and set it as default browser?

owilsky already answered that up above.
At the moment JZ SmartMort needs to be updated for Mini 5 Beta 2, but the author said he'll probably have that ready tonight.
So what are the differences between 10 for mobile and 5 mini?
Opera 5 is very similar but lighter on ram, also it uses the proxy server only... Opera Mobile can render the pages locally on the device.

Thanks working fine for me
I have installed opera mini 4 and i want to use it after installing opera mini 5 via cab? is this possible? with other cab installers of opera mini 5 opera mini 4 is not listed in java any longer!
thx for help
Just tried, much improved from beta 1 especially on the scrolling.
However kinda sluggish on TP2 using JBED. OM4.2 is *much* faster, so I'll stick to OM4.2 for now till OM5 can catch up with the speed.
I wouldn't recommend using your own SIP rather than the default one in Mini.... it becomes unstable if you use a regular SIP. You will still get freezes and sometimes you cannot exit the text entry window. If you use the crappy one provided by Opera then it works fine.

What's the best browser for this device (mini pro?)

My brother just got this phone, and he's loving it! We've got CM6 up and running. Is the default browser the best one? Or is there another browser he should look at? I ask specific to this device, and not to android in general, due to the relatively small screen size.

I personally like Opera Mobile a lot, it works very well on my Mini and it has support for HTML5 videos, you should also get Skyfire for general flash video support.
I've found opera not to support multi-touch on my mini pro, dolphin mini or dolphin hd do though. +1 for skyfire

Skyfire 4 FTW, Dolphin Mini is not that bad either.
Skyfire is not compatible with X10 Mini Pro?
Skyfire is fully compatible, just using it. When you can't play videos on Skyfire4, uninstall it, download Skyfire 3, run Skyfire 3, uninstall Skyfire 3 and than install Skyfire 4 and you will get licence for watching videos

But don`t appears in market to download....
You will need to use the hacked market from the development forum as the market will not show skyfire due to our screen resolution, despite this skyfire runs beautifully.
You can download .apk file and install it manualy, just search for it.
i suggest you use skyfire too, works like a charm on the phone
Opera Mini 6 on my Xperia mini pro works great and supports dualtouch...
If you are on slow GPRS or EDGE connections than Opera Mini is the fastest among all the browsers that I have tried.
Miren browser comes close to opera mini in terms of performance on slow connections and has an option of clearing the cache and exiting so that the RAM memory can be reclaimed by the operating system.
So what exactly has to be done, to find Skyfire in the market?
I already tried "Market Enabler", but that one didn't do the job, and although I searched for it, I could not find the .apk to install it manually. I looked through the dev forum, but could not find a "hacked" market.
I am running MiniCM7-2.1.8 btw.

Works for me too!
I am using Dolphin Mini Browser now, as it seems to be the best option for such "low end" mobile.
From what I read Opera is closed source and the traffic is "optimized" using their proxy servers, which means they can track & analyze all your steps in the web, which is nothing I would trust (as if one isn't already sharing enough data in the net). But to be honest, I don't really know the situation concerning the Dolphin company as well, so both may be in the same ship?
I haven't used the browser on the mobile much by now, so I can not really tell if it is the best option, but it will have to do for now.
Can anybody recommend a good open source browser for Android? On my PC I only use Firefox and Midori, but unfortunately those are not an option on the phone.
you should try uc browser works perft on my psp go
and on my iphone 3gs so it should work fine on xperia
by the way , whats that market called blackmarket ??
Ok opera it is fast and nice looking. But many pages not showing good. Thay are smashed. I lot travell in my country with buses. And when i need to open the page with timetravel table it is all smashed, evan id i unchack text warp. Also page of my university had view proble, with opera.
Because of that i use mini boat. Simple lookung but works nice.

Am I the only one for whom Opera Mobile is way slower than the stock Android Browser?

Hi guys
Sorry to post another browser thread, but i searched and all i could find were threads full of people saying how bleedingly fast Opera Mobile is for them, so i had to post this.
I've been trying it out in comparison to the stock Android Browser (i'm using a Galaxy SII on 2.3.4). To test, i was loading up the full desktop version of the Engadget site, as it has lots of graphics and seems like a good test.
Well, the stock browser finished loading (i.e the little green bar) in about 20 or so seconds (didn't time it exactly as the difference between the two browsers is so massive). On Opera Mobile it loads for, and i'm not joking here, about 2 whole minutes! The site is readable long before then in fairness, but it should not be taking this long surely. I was using 3G for both tests so i cannot see why there is such a huge difference. I tried out a few other sites, and they too were much slower, so it wasn't a one-off.
The thing is i really like the Opera browser and would love to use it, but not with these kind of load times.
Can people share their experiences, and let me know if i'm not alone in this regard, or if i'm missing something?
Cheers guys.

Opera Turbo usually introduces such 'infinite' loadings for me. Have you tried turning it off?
Yes
I had a bunch of problems with Opera as well......Sticking with Dolphin for now as stock is not playing well with CM7
No.

Thanks for the replies guys. I turned off Turbo and it made a big difference I have to say. The jury's out though as to whether our not it's actually any faster.
Something else is bugging me now though
The font in Opera Mobile is just horrible. I've changed my system font in Display Settings to Helvetica S. With it webpages look so much nicer, but Opera mobile uses it's own horrible font. Is there any way I can make it use the same font as the rest of my device?
opera mini is the fast one... though fairly buggy

Depending on your device Chrome works flawless (On Nexus 4 is impressive, whereas on S3 was a bit slugglish, so pretty much device dependant). You can also try to search in here for AOSP Browser which is the default browser for AOSP ROM's and behaves pretty well too ^^

Dolphin works great, even though i don't like the fact it used to reset my openened tabs after reboot (I usually stack over 20 tab to read later or similar, and that nerfed a bit my experience even it works great, definitely worth a try!). Maxthon used to be a nice browser back in my Sensation times, it's been a while since I used it but some dev's even include them on their builds, so worth a try as well.
As nearly everything in android world you should just try it, usually worth the experience because it hardly depends on device and use (for example, my "special" use and Dolphin browser).
Best regards,

Chrome Permanent Desktop

Hi guys,
Not sure if anyone is interested in this but I've always used it on my N7 as I am a chrome user .
This tweak does exactly as it says on the tin .
This is the original article Droidnerds
I actually just followed the instruction from the xda thread Here scroll to post number 5 for instructions and download :good:
Thanks go to Logan Graham for the original article and to PurpleRob for bringing it to my attention
All the best Rich
For the life of me, I can not figure out why this is not a native setting by now. With high res screens and quad core power, there is no time I ever want the mobile site. The G-Pad eats web pages as fast as any PC I own.
This script is the main reason I root, well almost....... Been using this for quite awhile on all my Android devices.
