and am wondering what method to use for rooting? Let me start by saying Im am not new to rooting as I have an EVO 4G OG that has been rooted since day 1. With that said I figured this may be a little different. I have a P7510 wifi only. Can someone point me in the right direction for rooting this bad boy. I found this thread:here...seems right just wanted to make sure.
Also what other than kernels and roms can you do with this when its rooted?
Can you run V6 supercharger on this?
What is the best ROM/Kernel combo?(everything working!)
Thanks for the help in advance! I am excited to be apart of this dev community albeit a little behind but here non the less!
Copy SU.zip to your tab's storage. Use Odin to flash the custom recovery then boot into recovery and flash SU.zip. Now you're stock rooted. I personally use CM9 on mine but the cameras currently don't work.

Thanks! Can I ask why? In the OP i pointed to another root method and thats why I asked where the SU.zip file was.
I guess the confusion is for the file name, "SU.zip".
SU = super user = root
So, in the first thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474971, the root file is "Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_10.1_root.zip"
In the second thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239185, the root file is "Root.zip"
But, if you are going to put a custom ROM, most of them are rooted already, so no need to flash the root.zip (or whatever the root file is named).

Thanks for cleaning me up. We are on the same page.
I'm pretty sure the rooting method for most GTab's are the same, then again flashing a CWM would be more than enough to save your woe's with SU. Best bet would be Task/Kang/Overcome since those are all pre-rooted and root for the stock is well...not so grand.
I strongly recommend Overcome, wonderful ROM!
They have a great guide for installation, and getting your tab back to stock as well.

Ok, here's official clockworkmod and ROM Manager support
For a full/better How To, click here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788099
This thread is a quick rundown, as well as a primer on how to create a proper clockwork compatible kernel.
First, use odin or redbend_ua to flash this kernel:
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//samsung/fascinate/zImage (you will need to package it accordingly for odin, I am lazy and did not do so, see the other thread)
Then, open up ROM Manager and flash recovery (choose Fascinate!).
All done!
Note, using reboot recovery or adb reboot recovery will take you to a "stock" recovery. Simply apply the update.zip on your SD card and clockworkmod will start up. (This method is better known as fakeflash)
Starting up recovery through ROM Manager will take you directly into clockworkmod.
How this works for those that want to develop on this further and create kernels that are ALSO clockworkmod compatible:
I extracted a initramfs from a stock recovery. I modified recovery.rc and fota.rc to allow adbd (and other small fixups). I modified default.prop to enable adbd and root shell. I replaced /res/keys with a test signed version to allow applying update.zip files.
Here is my fascinate initramfs:
http://github.com/koush/fascinate_initramfs
One can build clockwork directly into the kernel if they so choose. Simply take the update.zip on your SD card and pack those files into the initramfs as well. I chose not to do this because I am lazy.

So you're saying you downloaded this specific zImage2 file, then tar'd it, then flashed it over your kernel and it worked? Did you use odin, or redbend?
Or did you just post for help on the bottom of this thread?

Yes, there's a difference. When I posted asking if anyone had gotten this to work, I meant the kernel Koush specifically provided above, in this post. I know in general CWM recovery works.
I would try posting in the thread where you obtained your files for help. That way there are people who are using the same kernel that might help.

Alright...so I am confused now and I am not an Android noob....I see all the threads with how to flash the recovery and then this one....but I think we should have ONE thread that walks thru Rooting, flashing recovery etc....AND, in the first post, the instructions tell people how to pack files and etc., but a lot of people have no clue what that means...therefore, we need to have a "packed-ready" files for noobs. There are just a few too many botched phones.
As a noob myself, I think that sounds like a great plan.

Da_G Has an odin root available in the DEV section for the stock GB. As far as I know there are only 2 types of recovery for the Note Braway's CWM and the TWRP 2.1.2 ( I use CWM.) As far as the UCL*** those are all ICS leak builds. UCLE2 being the most recent. Personally I have pretty much stuck with Team Perfections builds but depending on what you want another ROM may suite your needs. If you install one of the new roms they keep root access and install either SU or superuser and are all flashable via CWM, however I assume you need to be rooted prior to installing which is where Da_G root comes in.

So I guess 4ext doesnt work on the note? Also, its easy to brick this device?
I didn't see any flash able zips for it in the dev section so I don't think its supported. Rom manager for the most part is unsupported also except for fixing permissions after flashing new stuff. This is my first experience with android (iPhone convert haha) I haven't had any bad experiences flashing yet but general rule of thumb is read and re read instructions for specific roms and make sure its specifically for the i717 not n7000 or anything else because that will hard brick. Also use only approved ics kernel because of the super brick bug out there

Nope, you can just flash cwm with Odin and then flash a ROM without rooting first. The ROM is rooted.
The only reason to root first is if you want to run titanium backup to nip any apps you may have installed prior to deciding to ROM.
Also that "super brick bug" is only on exynos processor equipped phones, I717 has a Qualcomm. So if you stick to just kernels MADE FOR THIS DEVICE then you can't ever encounter it.
Ah was never 100% clear on that cuz I rooted prior to running saurom rom. As for the kernel thing that's what I meant about not using the n7000 stuff prolly should of been more specific didn't want ya to make a mistake on that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
Yup.
And now that you've made the glorious switch to Android, when you upgrade to the next beast that catches your eye, you can take the titanium backup folder from your note, drop it in the sdcard of your new phone, install cwm, flash a ROM, then restore your backed up apps.
Easy peasy
So I need to verify, I can completely install a rom that gets rid of touchwiz? Also would this same rom improve battery charging time?
If I could just flash cm7 on this baby I'd be fine with that.
Cm7 is not supported on this device
There are a couple aosp roms floating around, but they are still in early development, alpha stage.

Exactly. No need to root stock ROM if your going to flash a rooted ROM anyway. Make sure you do a backup of your stocker before doing anything else. The only reason to root your stock ROM would be to backup all your apps and data. If you don't do that, you have to start from scratch. What's the issue you're having with the superuser zip?

If you're not going to flash ROMs why you even messing around with rom manager and CWM? Anyways go to development section and find the CWM thread. There you'll find a link for the stock recovery that you have to flash via terminal emulator.

I used CWM and RM on my OG EVO all the time so after rooting the LTE I kind of started doing it out of habit.
I've changed my mind on the LTE and want to stay rooted but stock.
I found the stock recovery image and tried installing it with fastboot but I can't without unlocking the bootloader through HTCDev.
Is there another way to install it?
Use terminal emulator
And do what with it?
flash ruu im pretty sure that gives u a stock recovery back?? correct me if im wrong
I'd like to avoid wiping the phone unless I absolutely have to. I just _finally_ got it how I want it.
Okay, I got it.
I found instructions on flashing recovery using flash_image. Though I couldn't install flash_image as described. I used ES File Explorer to copy flash_image from my sdcard to /system/bin and then changed the permissions to rwx r-x r-x.
Next I used Terminal Emulator and ran: flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
That worked.
FYI I just reinstalled the stock recovery myself but used the image and the process documented in the OP of the Clockwork Recovery thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675430
Doing it that way, I didn't need to download an additional program other than Terminal Emulator which I already had, and then the stock recovery image which is linked at the bottom of the OP. Easy peasy!

1. Wrong section. Please post things like this in the general or q&a sections, not flaming, just telling you for future references.
2. If your device has an unlocked bootloader, flash amon ra recovery or twrp and go to the dev menu and it will say something like give Su permissions or root or whatever, just click that.
3. Profit.
4. You're welcome.
To root you should download the latest version of SuperSU zip file, and flash it with anon RA recovery.

You do not need to root your phone to get rid of the bloatware, you can keep your phone stock unrooted and debloat it yourself and not have to worry about flashing anything. To disable go to menu>apps and after clicking an app you see the choice of disabling.
SuperSU not working
I don't know why i cant get this to work. I have flashed the amon recovery to my phone. Followed these steps:
1)Flash AmonRa Recovery.
2) Boot into AmonRa Recovery.
3) Scroll to and enter the Developer menu.
4) Scroll to install Su. DO NOT INSTALL THE ENG (Unguarded) one. Use the other one.
5) Confirm this, when it is finished, go ahead and reboot. You should be rooted.
Downloaded the SuperSU from google play and select install. after a few minutes it comes back and says the SU binert needs updated, I select continue. then after about a minute it says installation failed.

Flash in recovery. If you have already flashed a custom recovery(amon ra) then pull your battery, hold out for 3 seconds, insert battery, hold vol down and power at same time til bootloader boots, select recovery, select flash zip menu, select sdcard(assuming you placed flashed zip on external sdcard), select file, press power to confirm, reboot when done. Now you should be rooted.

All of you rock i will go through and hit thank you to each of you.
this thread also helped me access root.
thank you guys. really.
I'm dev-unlocked and have TWRP installed, no root yet.
what's the consensus on the better/stable/happier su package, supersu vs superuser?
ALSO and almost more importantly, where can i find a flashable zip for either. i know everyone says just flash a rooted ROM, but that's not what i want to do. just looking for a file i can flash in recovery or push via adb. been searching and can't find any options that don't redo everything at once (ie. dev unlock and install recovery)
already been through all of that, just want to add root. thoughts? links? non-sequiturs?

yeah, that's where i'm at. the tutorial/everything page has everything you could ever want if you were starting from zilch; but no "here's just the su binaries and app" zip that i can find. there's every variety of "one click" solution but it doesn't seem like anyone publicizes the step-by-step pieces.
i did dev-unlock and then flashed twrp via fastboot because i wanted a nandroid backup of my "virgin" setup. now if i could just push su to it i would have my setup/ROM with root and not have to wipe my phone and start with somebody else's. not that i'm knocking those efforts because at some point i'm going to start flashing ROMs on this thing, but i'm not ready to blow away all my data just to get root. of course there's always the remote possibility that i could flash the stock 2.13 rooted rom and restore my own data partition and it would work without being flaky, but i never had success doing that on my transform.
i guess i could always download one of the one-clicks and tear it apart and see if i can't figure something out on my own, but i have no experience doing that whatsoever

I know there is a superuser.apk floating around on xda I'm on my phone now so can't link to it just search all forums and you should find it

You can't flash root to a phone with a zip. You need to look up the specific instructions for your phone, and most likely will factory reset your device.

Seems like it would be easier to just bite the bullet and flash the stock rooted rom.

if it can't be flashed then how do the one-clicks do it? those just do a dev unlock and flash recovery and what not, they're not full roms.
I used supersu and found it via a search here.

not yet. my wife was getting made at me for not being fully engaged in her prattling so i had to shut the laptop for the night.
i was looking at the update script and it does some goofy stuff with the maps.apk and youtube.apk that seems to (at least from other comments in the thread) cause some unwanted aggravation with those apps. i asked the question what/why and the answer i got was an assumption that they were being moved temporarily to make sure there was room in /system for the su binaries and then moved back.
i don't know if that's necessary or not, but i kind of doubt it. just like to know what's happening in the background and not monkey with things that don't need monkeyin'.
i've got a working zip for SuperSU v0.96 that i've stripped the stuff out of it that moves around the maps and youtube apks, doesn't seem to be necessary on our devices. sent a pm to chainfire about posting it but haven't heard back yet. or maybe i just can't send pms

You might need to check your settings for PM by default they are set to accept pm's from admin and mods only if I remember correctly

thought you probably had something there but doesn't seem to be the case. but I'm just a no name dude with less than 50 posts and i imagine he gets a lot of messages. no biggie though, got mine working which was my goal in the first place. just wanted to take the opportunity to share another option with others.
truthfully though I'm not an Android dev by any stretch and it only took me about ten minutes to figure out how to re-sign the zip after updating the file once i committed myself to the idea i was going to try it
