Hi all! The rooting guide of Intratech given here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 DOES NOT WORK! I have an SGS II Kernel version of KE8 (India) and I tried to follow the steps given in the guide, but when I open ODIN and connect my phone in Download mode with my laptop via USB Cable, ODIN is not connecting to the phone. The box meant to turn yellow does NOT change color. Nothing happens at all. Why is this so? I cannot post in the relevant thread because I am a newbie in the forun
Have you installed kies first to get the drivers?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Yes, of course, I have the latest version of Kies installed on my laptop and I use it regularly to connect with my SGS II. I kept Kies closed when trying the rooting procedure as mentioned in Intratech's guide. Started phone in download mode. Opened Odin on laptop, then connected phone via USB........the box which is supposed to turn yellow on connection, doesn't light up. Nothing happens at all.

I suggest to you that the overwhelming majority of the people who use the guide will disagree with you and provide evidence to the fact that it does, indeed, work. The fact that it does not work for you suggest that you are doing something wrong or have a problem with your computer.
I would suggest that you ensure that KIES is also closed in the system tray of your computer before opening Odin and connecting the phone. Also ensure that your computer has an internet connection and is able to connect to windows update to download and install drivers. If that doesn't work then change USB port or computer.
By all means, if you find a way that works then feel free to write your own guide. More information is good and maybe others might find your method, if you discover one, easier to follow.
@Intratech: Hi. Thanks for your reply. Ok, so it is not working for me. Can you help?
My laptop is working on Windows 7 Home Premium which is upto date in all respects. My USB port is working fine as I am able to connect my SGS II to Kies through that. Kies was closed when I tried to connect to Odin. Odin version is 1.85. While the phone (in download mode) is connected to the laptop, and Odin is Open, nothing happens. Nothing.

Is kies closed in the system tray as well?
Yes, Kies is closed in system tray also. Fully closed. Odin opens, and I see the Odin screen as per your screen shots, but the box which is supposed to light up yellow, does not.
Are you using the Samsung USB cable or a HTC one?
Samsung USB cable which came with the phone box pack. I can see the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time boxes checked. Nothing else is checked, not even the PDA button. The box saying ID:COM (which is supposed to light up) is blank.
u need to check pda and load the file u want to flash it
then click on start
Look in your program and features list, found in control panel, and see if you have a listing for Samsung USB driver for mobile phones there. If you do then uninstall it and uninstall KIES. Download a new copy of KIES from Samsung and install it. After installing it, make sure you don't have USB debug ticked, connect the phone and leave it until all the drivers install. After that remove the device and lose KIES. Put the tick in USB debugging and connect the phone and leave it so that any needed drivers install. After this put the phone in download mode and connect it, without opening KIES or ODIN, and leave it to download any drivers needed. If it downloads and install any drivers wait for it to finish, once it does then you can go ahead and use Odin normally.
If this doesn't work your PC is at fault, fix it.

How you going to flash without connecting to the device?
Turn USB debugging off on phone .USB connection should be to a motherboard port .
Reboot phone set phone to connect in USB mass storage mode .
Connect cable wait for Windows to load drivers . You should be able to browse phone via Windows explorer if USB drivers are correct .If so remove cable and reboot phone to download mode . Open Odin select files to load connect cable .
That fails then
Rooting guide of intratech does not work! for you your PC or your phone but for everyone else so give up .

@cyberwarfare: Yes, I tried that. The file loaded, I pressed start. Yet nothing happened. I just saw one line notification in the left hand side column of Odin, which read something like "successes: 0/failures: 0". I am speaking from memory here. Nothing really happened even after loading PDA and pressing the Start button.
@Intratech: Yes, both Kies and Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones are there in my program list. I downloaded Kies from their India support site : http://www.samsung.com/in/support/d...1&prd_mdl_cd=GT-I9100LKAINU&srchword=GT-I9100
Worth mentioning here that the USB debug check box was ticked when I tried to Root with Odin.
So basically, you're asking me to uninstall & reinstall Kies and its drivers. Ok, will do. It will take time so will do it when I have a little more time on my hands. Thanks for your help & your time. I appreciate. If you have time, then look at my other post here which says, "7 major issues with SGS II" ...... and help with solving my other issues like that of bluetooth not connecting and phone ringer's erratic behaviour. Thanks a ton.
Mate I haven't used the Indian firmware so I'm not too sure about troubleshooting it. There is an Indian thread in the general forum where you may be able to get more help with the issues you have.
@JJEgan: Thanks for replying. All my USB Ports are on the motherboard itself, worth mentioning that the same USB port works fine when I connect the phone to the laptop. Am able to transfer files to and fro via the same USB port.
"set phone to connect in USB mass storage mode".....how do I do that? Where to find that in phone settings?
I am able to browse the contents/files on the phone very well...so this proves my drivers are fine. So which basically means, that Intratech's rooting guide does not work FOR ME! Happy? This may be a problem specific to the India specific phones....Kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE8-CL214845

@Intratech: Thanks mate. I've posted my problem in the India specific thread also.....lets see if someone replies. But the problem is not with the rooting procedure, the problem is that I can't even seem to get started with the procedure as there is no connection between Odin and the phone.
Nah, it's not with the firmware. The other Indians who use it have no issue following the guide.
Please try and reinstall everything as I've stated and see if that work. Also, when you go into download mode what do you see on the screen?
In download mode I see a static warning on the screen which tells me of the risk and tells me I have to press the VOL down button to cancel this, and there is a yellow triangle at the bottom. The screen stays there as I connect the USB cable to the laptop.

The screen message you are not reading is the sentence above the one you posted .
To install custom rom press Vol Up key .

Right this is your problem, you have not put the phone in download mode as yet. Press volume up at this screen to enter download mode and now you will connect.
I might have accidentally bricked my SGS 2. I get a screen saying:
"firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again"
with a mobile phone and a computer logo with a Yellow triangle in between.
I know abt Rooting and ROM flashing etc and has been doing it for the last couple or years.
I flashed Franklin's XXKG3 Kernels, and before I could flash Chainfire's XXKG3 kernel, the USB ports refused to recognize my handset. I can still go into download mode but the Odin or Samsung Kies etc. won't do nothing.
Keeps saying "USB Device not recognized"
Please help!!!!

Uninstall the Samsung USB Driver from Control Panel
START/Control Panel/Programs and Features
Select "SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones" and then uninstall
reboot your PC and then re-install the Samsung USB Driver from:-
C:\Program Files\Samsung\Kies\USB Driver
and run "SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe"
Doing that will make sure there is no USB driver corruption.

I had the same problem on my SGS4g after updating to a leaked 2.3.4 rom, which would not make phone calls. Tried to use heidmall to downgrade by loading a new rom. After installing the usb driver as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14798367&postcount=1 . After reboot I get the error screen <phone..!..Computer> "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again". I then took the following steps.
I came across this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S_Series#Bricked_Screen Under the bricked section it mentions a couple things to try. I the reboot cycle with a couple of times and kept on getting the same screen. Still no go.
I took Odia's advice an did a complete removal of all usb drivers as mentioned and reinstalled kies. This was key in getting odin to recognize the phone again.
My solution:
I try Odin again to try to get it to recognize my phone. I open odin with the usb connected in this state and it is not recognized. I pull battery, it boots to error screen. I restart odin and then plug in the usb and it is recognized. I was then able to load my pit, pda, phone, csc back onto the phone with odin. The first time it tried to load the data it failed, the second time it worked!
Interestingly I never got the "Download Screen". I was still on the mentioned error screen, yet odin was able to still see the phone. The status bar still showed up on the error screen as the fresh rom was being loaded.
I thought I was totally bricked, but this method worked in my case. Hope something similar might work for you.
I still don't know I would get this error screen and have to go through this after loading the required usb driver for heimdall? Any ideas?
OMG! It's WORKING!
Thanks a lot to you all guys for the co-operation....
So, what did I do???? I uninstalled Kies and re-installed a couple of times but it won't access it. Tried Odin in all possible ways, No success. While playing and after ordering a "Jig" from some1 in USA,
I thought of something else and while the phone still being connected with the pc, I ran SuperOneClick, but it went on saying waiting for the device,.... I accidentally or in frustration hit the "HOME" button and it started doing something, USB drivers and Modem drivers installed on PC. Then I started Odin and the port went "Yellow". And I flashed it with the XXKG3.....
OMG! I'm so much relieved!!!!!!!! thanks God
thank you all too
Love your SGS2 and love God! Bless you all!

I love you man! You saved my phone and me!
So what have we learnt today? Don't go screaming "brick!" everytime you encounter a problem
I had a same issue yellow triangle between Phone and PC symbol...
followed this step .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337
just did like this on very first step to get into odin mode hold vol down and power for longer then usual to get into odin mode and by pass that yellow triangle between Phone and PC screen and then follow rest of it same and easy as right clicking on desktop LOL!
From my experience, only true brick I encountered was when I messed with boot loaders. If the screen shows anything at all, Odin will recognize it. Glad to hear it's fixed

I´d tried to upgrade my Infuse SGH-i997 (AT&T) but I did something wrong and now the cell phone no work.
When it turn on says:
"firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again"
The computer recognize the cell phone but I don´t know what else I can do.
Any suggestion?
Can you get into download mode? If yes then reflash stock firmware using Odin
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
A bricked phone is a phone which will not respond. It maybe a soft brick or hard.
If you can get into download or recovery all you have to do is reflash. Wipe data & Cache. You will be up and running. If your phone is not recognised by your computer then reinstall kies.

Well, I got this same Firmware upgrade error. I can't get the computer to see it at all. It's almost like the USB port doesn't work anymore. I can get into the download mode but then it ends there. I cannot get into the bootloader at all. If I try, it goes to the error screen and if I boot normally, it goes to the error screen.

I can't tell if you're asking for help or just letting people know, but anyway, considering all your previous posts were in the Epic 4G Touch forums, you've probably trashed your device flashing something meant for the I9100.

Thanks a lot. My teenage son thought he had bricked his S3 mini but I was able to fix it after reading this thread. Thanks.
I just bought a new S3 GT-I9300 running ICS. And I'm a noob in this.
The problem is I can't root my phone. I followed the steps from here - AndroidNZ and then I stuck on step 8 and above. I also already tried the Chainfire method but still stuck when I want to put my phone in Download Mode.
Whenever I press the 3 button (VolumeDown + Home + Power), I ended up in the android system recovery <3e> screen (with the little green android guy and exclamation mark on it). Then, when I connect the usb cable, it said 'usb not recognized'. And, nothing was detected on Odin.
I don't know what to do anymore. Please help.
p/s: And I already installed Kies in my comp with USB debugging enabled in my S3.

Make sure you have KIES NOT running as it does not run well with Odin, also look into the task manager and close all KIES processes!
Also make sure you installed the USB drivers (should have been installed with KIES but you never know), you can get them again in the stickes in General section.
Go into the Download mode as instructed, connect the phone via USB and Odin should find it. After that follow the instructions.
btw: there are also easy guides on YouTube that will show you each step.

Yeah. I already stop all Kies process in the Task Manager. Hmm.
Hi all,
Yes, i know there might be another topic on this, but trust me, ive looked, ive been looking for a solution for a full week now, and i know someone here can help me..
SO PLEASE HELP!!
I was running AOKP build6 on my SGS3 GT-I9300 International version, which performed excellent for more than a year, suddenly it became unstable, my phone would freeze completely and i had to reboot 10 times a day, it got worse, it just started rebooting out of nowhere
SO, i thought it a good idea to look for another ROM, and to be safe i tried flashing the stock ROM from the CMW recovery mode..
That did not work for some reason, it said Fail - so i went to try the PDA file option in Odin (newest version)
In Odin, i use the PDA button to load a md5/tar file, (Odin says 0COM/ connected, it can see my phone is connected) but when i start, it says Fail
-Phone will not start in recovery mode, it DOES go into Download mode, but any other way of trying to start in Download mode, it gives the following message:
"firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies"
I have updated (reinstalled) the latest version of Kies, but Kies cannot connect to my phone (while Odin does)
It just keeps "Connecting" but does not connect, i tried all options in Kies "connection problems" (mine is in dutch) but it just will not connect
I am almost sure i unticked the box for USB Debugging, / so USB Debugging mode is OFF (im pretty sure)
Can this be the reason why Kies does not connect?
Am i completely scr*wed now?
I tried the firmware on another topic here, but in Odin it just says FAIL
I think you would call this HARD BRICKED??
i can still boot into Download mode, but is that enough? cause USB Debugging is OFF and Kies does not find my phone
Is it neccesary to replace my mainboard perhaps? I feel i have no luck trying to push firmware whatsoever...\
This hurts (since my backup phone is a slow unrooted S1
PLEASE PLEASE some help ?? ?
Sounds like either partial sds (product name blank in download mode) or a hard brick.
Lots of other identical threads, if you've read them then you already know there is no easy solution.
Use "firmware update and initialization" option in kies, under tools.
Hello All,
I've been reading posts from here for a long time but this is my first post.
I'm coming here as a last resort to save my Galaxy s2 (SGH-T989) which has a stock ROM.
Here's what happened.
I dropped my phone and then it got stuck in bootloop (it only boots until I see the "SAMSUNG" word animation and stops there).
At that point, ODIN 'sees' that there's a connected device; KIES keeps "connecting...." but can't actually connect; ADB does not show any connected device.
So, what I wanted to do was to factory "reset" the phone. The problem is I can't get the phone into Recovery mode. I believe it's because my volume down button was acting up when the phone was working. However, I can get to "Download Mode" using a USB Jig.
So, the next thing to do is to flash a new stock ROM. However, whenever I connect my phone when it's in "Download Mode", ODIN does not see it.
Yes, I've installed, re-installed, removed, re-installed all drivers and Kies and I've done that so many times you can't even believe it.
The problem is that the device driver "SAMSUNG Mobile USB CDC Composite Device" gives the following error "This device cannot start. (Code 10)", and I don't know why or how I can get rid of that. As mentioned above, I've tried all the device driver installation fixes but none has worked.
I mean, when the phone is not in Download Mode and I connect it to my PC, all device drivers are working fine with no error, but when it's in Download Mode, I get the error mentioned above "This Device cannot start.".
So, my questions:
1) Is there a way to get to Recovery Mode without using the button combinations? (The phone is in bootloop)
2) How can I fix the device driver error mentioned above to get ODIN to see my device?
3) Is there anything else I need to be doing?
This problem is really frustrating and I've been on it for more than 2 weeks and nothing has worked so far. Any help is greatly appreciated.
1. I think you have flashed an bad kernel if you cant get into recovery mode and i dont get it why your volume down acts like up?.
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104 try to maybe also disable kies and try again.
3. Kies is on, adb doesnt work at samsung/download screen, try to reinstall samsung usb drivers again :/ yes I know but to be sure, disable driver signature or something like that if you are on windows 8.x, try another usb cable.
2weeks dont sound good. I hope these tips could help a bit but I still wonder why your phone got in bootloop when you dropped it !?!? What were you doing at that time and did the battery go out?

Thanks for the quick reply, wulsic.
1. No, I did not flash any kernel on this phone, everything on it is stock and was working just fine before it was dropped. I meant that the volume down was not working properly, not that it was acting like up.
2. I tried that but did not work
3. The drivers are working fine when the phone is not in Download Mode, it's only when it's in Download Mode that I get the error and I've tried re-installing drivers and everything, I think the problem is with the device itself not a driver problem.
