Second Release
Right, you need to download the website and the application. Both of which i have now attached to this thread.
Follow the same process you did with the initial release, however, DO NOT edit the config file. There is now a tab in the app for this, please use this instead.
Also, there is now a log file if something goes wrong. It is called 2me2u_logfile.log and will be created in the same folder as the executable.

I don't know about you, but i'm tired of texting from my whone when i'm at my desk. It's a long process and makes it look like i'm not busy at my desk, especially if i'm having a bit of a discussion with friends.
So i decided to write an app that sits on the phone, waiting for SMS's to be sent. You login to a web portal (which the app also logs into) and create your SMS there (as many as you wish) and when the app checks (every 1s to 300s) it'll download the messages you want to send, then send them. With a delivery report if you so wish.
Also looking for more features to add in once released, for example, SMSing you where your phone is, if you've lost it. Using the GPS.
It's still early, but that app is nearly programmatically complete. It's not very pretty, nor is the website. Hoping to get time this week to tidy it all up and get a test release out.
Watch this space Not even sure if this sort of app will be popular!

Not sure if this app will be popular!! Who are you kidding?
They charge a lot for this kind of thing, so it isn't cheap. If you want free hosting, let me know - I am not sure what methods you will be using for this, but as long as you know how to create the site, I can host it.

Sounds good, but how will this differ from, say, mIQ? That allows you to send and receive SMSs via the web.
Huh... didn't actually see that on the web there.
Safe to say it's far more advanced that my application would be anytime soon. The only difference would be my remote GPS finder and that i had a plan to develop an app for Android.
Not much point now.

Well don't lose interest just yet. A dedicated solution just for that task, especially one I could host on say my own website would be a much preferred solution for me than yet another social site having access to all my information.
Its a cool idea, but I could see how people would be concerned with privacy. My text messages aren't always PG nor are the discussions always "legal". I personally don't concern myself with privacy anyhow.
Right now I just run MyMobiler and tether the phone to my PC and use the phone GUI with my keyboard. This app/service WOULD be very helpful for people with ridiculously strict IT departments and people who don't use Windows OS on their workstations. I'll definitely check it out when released. Sounds cool.

+1, a server that YOU choose would be fairly better than having to use a common service that would store our data...
The webserver could be our pc, or why not, getting a way to get it working throught a php script that could be hosted on any host we want to

Well, you guys are on the exact train i am.
Basically, i was going to host it on my site, and if people were interested, then open it up for registration etc. However, you're right, Privacy was a worry and i'm not sure i like my information being held by someone else, i only just allowe Facebook to.
So, i'll continue, get it polished up, then release a package that people can deploy wherever the hell they want
Hopefully this weekend some time, i would imagine? Busy all week

Because you need to be able to get to your phone, i.e. ActiveSync or via WiFi.
I don't know about you, but at my place of work, we don't have any drivers installed on the machines to allow us to use USB Devices, other than the keyboard and mouse. And we don't have WiFi that will get us onto the main network. So that option would be out.
Sounds really cool, I'd definitely use it. Right now I just use MyMobiler and just type with my pc keyboard on my phone under the keyboard on ABC. Works fine for me now, but my phone needs to be plugged in if I want to use it.

Sounds like a good idea, but not sure how many people know this, but as long as you know that format for a carrier you can actually send a message via e-mail to a person's phone as a text.
For Sprint it's <10 digit number>@messaging.sprintpcs.com
for AT&T it's <10 digit number>@txt.att.net and to send MMS to ATT it's @mms.att.net
I have a list of HUNDREDS of the formats somewhere I will post if you all want.

Hello to you all people of XDA, firstly I must state that I've scoured the forums far and wide and have yet to find some valuable info regarding my problem.
So what we're doing is developing (or trying to, as is obvious from this post) a custom rom for the Galaxy S2 which would be used for a single medical application for sensor tracking and the processing and displaying of said data on the SGS2, while at the same time sending it to his/her doctor.
What we need to be able to achieve with this rom is to put it into the hands of the end-user (a chronical patient which will in turn be able to stay at home instead of being hospitalized) and be able to completely lock down the phone for his use (I know, it sounds terrible) so that he loses the phone/sms/games/youtube/internet functionality as we need the phone to run as stable and for as long as possible without any additional battery stress (the constant sending, processing and processing of data seems enough of a problem for now).
I've searched into some custom roms but we eventually came up with the need for a stock Samsung rom which could be modified as we want to.
See this is where the problem begins, we can't seem to get the phone rooted, the ROM customized and then unrooted again so that the phone can't be fiddled with anymore, except when it's completely dead and we need to fix it.
So to cap it all up:
It needs to allow for a custom load and bootscreen (I almost got this to work)
It needs to be completely locked down for the end user.
It has to have full BT, NFC and WiFi functionality
It has to be able to call out and reciev calls, but only to/from specific numbers (911, doctor, etc..)
It has to basically allow for 2-3 programs to be running, while the others simply don't exist on the phone.
I am terribly sorry if anything like this has been asked about before, I swear I put 2 days of me life into researching already.
Any help, any help at all, ideas and solutions, but mostly links are welcome.

Just a detail, but the SGS2 doesn't have the NFC functionality. Project seems to be possible, I would look into CyanogenMod sources if I was you.

Why are you afraid of leaving the phone rooted and in hands of the patient?
Is he so uncritical that he can search the web and find means of unrooting a mobile phone and then get around to actually doing it?

Block all internet access apart from ones you want or you can just setup iptables rules, shouldnt need root apart from when setting it up
As far as removing programs, just delete the apks from the zip, or before you remove root. My sig has a list of all apks in a upto date rom and what they do.
You can use gemini app manager to control autoruns (stop them etc) also to block (hide and disable apps)
As far removing root, your best bet is to once you are done, use adb (from the android sdk) to remove the superuser.apk then flash the stock kernel back, as far as I know without superuser apps cant grain root permisions.
OR
This app will allow you to block any app behind a password
This app will block incoming and outgoing sms and calls on white and blacklists
Custom boot logo (the first screen before the animation)
Custom boot animation need to go into system/media, I am not sure about the format but there are loads around, like this thread has loads, stock kernel should support them.

Most of that is easily possible.
If you listed the apps needing removed, the apk files just need deleted.
To control calls, you can use a third party app from market for that.
It's possible to have the custom rom unrooted, and easily flashed, regardless of how badly the phone gets rooted
Boot animation is easy anyway... If you can provide it in a zip like other ones (zip containing numbered png's) then it's a piece of cake.
A little bit of clever firewall stuff would prevent any web traffic, in or out, except to your defined server, which is obviously a concern when a phone is handling sensitive medical info.

The phones are going to be used by around 500.000 people in a year, it's not that we want to take anything away from the user, it's more about not having any problems with the firmware - like ever.

LucLucLuc, not sure where you live, but you're entering the patient confidentiality minefield with big, big boots.
Apart from the legal considerations, your question is definitely OS related and not device related.
I see what you want, but legally - where I live anyway - it's too much of a grey area to get involved with.
I use call recording a lot for referrals and info from other doctors, but I've always asked the other party if they're OK with it. I won't record patient conversations, and I won't accept any files whatsoever that have seen RIS or PACS first - not worth it.
Can't see it's worth your while, but I'd appreciate it if you keep me informed should you decide to work on it.

I'm actually just a student doing the research and some basic Android programming, thank god I wasn't let into the bigger of the projects
But yes, this project is a colaboration of several european firms and you can read more about it at chiron-project.eu - it's a very very interesting project afaic.
I don't think we'll be swimming with lawyer piranhas soon though, the project uses sensor data (which sorta is a privacy issue) which will be monitored on a tablet running Android (currently testing the Galaxy tab 10.1 - we were lucky to order one before Steve had another one of his fits), proccessed in real time and then stored on the central server, from where it will only be accessible by the patients doctor.
Patient consents are dealt with before we even start talking about mobile hospitalizations.

Please forgive me if this has been asked and answered but nothing that I saw in my search actually answered this. What I would like to do is to run 2 instances of an application or more. The issue is that I am using an RDP program that allows me to attach to a single connection, the kick is that I need the ability to toggle between those machines and the app does not do that natively. I can also see it being useful for a situation when you need to toggle between two documents that are both open with the same application.
I know that it is really not made to do this natively but if there is are ROMs that include that functionality or a way to alter android to do this, I would give many thanks and possibly donate to whoever can come up with a working solution. In addition, it would be great to be able to tell the system which applications can and can't function that way.
I currently have a nexus 7, transformer prime and transformer infinity to test this with.
Anyone? I really need some ideas.
Can anyone give me some advise at least? I have seen things in the android dev documentation that imply that there are ways to make this work. It seems like there are also controls that can be coded into the application itself to allow this.
I am not really a developer and am just looking for some input even if it is just to crap all over my desire to do this.

So, basically, I got the smart dock and, it's pretty damn awesome. But OMFGTHATFREAKINGMOUSECURSORTHATWON'TGOAWAY.
Anyway, I did some searching and found that there's no way to get it to disappear under stock. Grr. But some custom ROMs allow it. Unfortuantely, none of them seem to say whether they do or not, so I need your advice! BUT! There's other things I need too, which are even more important than being able to make the cursor disappear. So... I need:
1) NTFS support, read AND write. If the ROM isn't Android 4.2+, Paragon NTFS & exFAT can take care of that. So; I need a ROM that's either 4.1 based or has built-in NTFS support. (I don't need exFAT.)
2) Works with the smart dock. The one that has the audio out, HDMI, and 3 USB ports, and isn't officially compatible with the S3 but works anyway.
3) Can make the freaking mouse cursor disappear. Even better if this can be set on an app-by-app basis or toggled with a key shortcut on an external keyboard.
4) Decent battery life. Doesn't need to be better than stock, just not one of those ROMs that runs the thing flat in half an hour.
5) Being based on Samsung's rather than AOSP would be a bonus, but I'm not *overly* fussed on this.
(I heard some custom ROMs result in the FM Radio not working. I really couldn't care less about this, I never use it, so it's fine if that doesn't work.)
I don't need to be walked through how to install it etc, I've done all that several times before. Just need a reccomendation on which one to use, to save me trying every one of the millions out there. Even if you can only confirm some of those features and aren't sure about others, that'll at least narrow down the selection to try. Thanks in advance guys. =)
Recommend a ROM threads aren't allowed. You have to read the features in the rom thread.

2) Only Touchwiz support video out
3) The mouse cursor you turn on in developer options? Or you mean when you're using the mouse? Can't imagine using a mouse without a cursor
4) Again, mainly kernel related. But since you narrowed it down to only touchwiz roms in point 2, it's not really relevant anymore.
5) Not really got a choice.

Hullo.
Looking for a little advice from folks about sideloading apks to multiple android devices at once (like, 8 or 9 of em). Searched around the forums a bit and couldn't find anything directly relating to this issue, so I figured I'd ask. I dunno if this belongs more in App development, but its an Android specific issue so...
At present I'm using Test Flight App (I'd post the URL but I'm too much of a noob here) to manage builds and releases. Its really great for getting beta builds out to the studio team, and to various beta testers and potential partners.
However there are a few issues with it, which are particularly problematic for quick iterations etc.
1) Actually downloading the apks is a manual process per device. So if you've a small QA team (or are working solo) it takes alot of time to get the newest build onto everything.
2) Each build has to be uploaded via the Test Flight website, then distributed to users on a build by build basis. This is a difficult to automate process, so makes having any kind of continuous integration system for nightlies etc. difficult at best.
I've been looking into possibly doing something like installing a Dropbox on each device and automating CI builds to a dedicated folder, which is shared via Dropbox to everything, but its a bit of work up front to get it working and I may still have to actually manually install the things each time.
Any of you guys had any experience attempting to do something like this?
Figured I might as well come back and answer my own question incase anyone else was wondering.
Ended up using a USB hub to connect multiple devices then running a script that used ADB to get all attached devices, then passed that list one by one into the adb install function.
Still not ideal, as it requires a wired connection for each phone, but works for now.

How about Wireless ADB?
Check ADB Wireless on Play Store. (Unfortunately all phones must be rooted, because it requires ADB port to be set to 5555)
