Why is my app drawer laggy on most launchers? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Rooted, oc to 1.83, supercharger 1000hp..only launcher with zero lag is TW.. Currently using Go with occasionally bearable lag on app drawer and general usage.
On all other launchers though (esp LPP which I'd like to use), the app drawer is very laggy on open and close, but and changing opening speed doesn't help. Everything else seems perfectly smooth with LPP, but the app drawer itself is frustratingly laggy and prevents me from using it.. Any advice?

Bad optimization, abstraction layers, visual complexity, the number of objects.on the screen...among other things, can all cause the sputtering and stuttering we love so much.
People just care too much about visuals and they'll keep buying and using stuff even if it doesn't perform well.
Btw. SPB Shell 3d didn't lag when i used it...anywhere. But its so funky and limited that i found myself back at the stock launcher...and quick.

Have you tried SS launcher?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk

Haven't tried ss.. I'm worried because everybody is reporting that LPP is perfect on ATT note, I and my app drawer is very laggy.. Not sure why mine is unique.. Everything else about launcher pro is buttery.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk

for me, when i use horizontal scrolling (left/right) in my app drawer, there is lag. when i switch to vertical scrolling (up/down) it is lag-free.
i use Zeam launcher.

That's strange--with these other launchers, I have very smooth operation EXCEPT for when the app drawer is opened.
Can someone comment on why there is such variation between i717's? anything we can do to rectify?

I use adw ex launcher......make sure you turn off all animations off in system.....and in launcher......turn off anything that maes visual effects.....I have 0 lag... try spare parts app...they have a couple good edits in there for turning transitons fast and faster scrolling options...also there is a build prop I believe max events should be 200....helps as well

Thats crazy, Launcher pro has 0 lag, and on a high end phone like this, no launcher should have lag at ALL!!
TSF works well no lag, sometimes it will reboot upon unlocking the screen which takes about 4-5 seconds. However there is 0 lag, and lots of eye candy, with updates HOPEFULLY on the way. The customer support is terrible though, I emailed them a few times with no reply to date.
Mine is stock not rooted.

I had good luck with ADWex with vertical drawer and transparent background.
TSF launcher is a bit wonky but ultra smooth. Hoping it gets some updates to make it really killer.
Edit-completely stock GNote still. No root, etc.

I've used the stock launcher, SPB Mobile Shell, ADW Ex, GoLauncher and Launcher Pro on my Note I717. I HATE to say it because I've been ADW for a long time, but Launcher Pro has minimal lag compared to the others. I'd say SPB was a close 2nd but you can't customize that one much. Try and you'll see, promise.

My app drawer is very laggy as well, and its jittery switching between home screens.

Coming from an Epic Touch GSII it is a bit tough putting up with the slower speeds even though I have overclocked. I decided to rebuild the phone from scratch, NOT restoring from titaniumat all and limiting the number of programs I installed. It HAS helped but it is still not as responsive as my GSII. I noitce that the memory on this phone gets eaten up and I often only have 40-50MB for running programs. On my GSII I seemed to always have over 120MB free easy. Without getting into the discussion of using app killers, I do notice that if I kill the apps the phone (app tray, home button etc) start responding more quickly. Side by side I also notice that the amount of memory available on the GSII vs Note when all apps are killed via Advanced Task killer is about 100 to 300MB less for me on the Note vs my Wife's stock skyrocket. Once Killed I am lucky to get over 250MB available where her skyrocket gets 497MB available. Not sure if there is anything I can do about that or if it is even related to the lag on the Note, but it is a pain for sure!
Still in my 30 days and I am Loving most things about the Note. However the Lag is heavy on my mind when I considor if I want this phone for the next 2 years.

Are all atrixs laggy?

I have only had y atrix a few days and am starting to get really fed up with how laggy the device is.
I have installed the updates as advised by the handset and even trien using a 3rd party launcer (launcher pro and adw ex) but still have the same problems.
The biggest thing that frustrates me is when i am trying to type a email and it constantly laggs between typing words.
mine is a uk handset on orange network.
any advice how i get over this...do i need to root it and remove certain blootware or upgrade to android 2.3?/
please advise me with links etc to how i get over this
Try freezing the motorola bloatware through titanium backup. Do a search in the development forum to find the thread.
Could make the difference. Will certainly boost battery life!

Is it laggy over all or just when typing? my Atrix is not laggy at all but certain keyboards cannot keep up. IMO Swiftkey BETA in the market is pretty fast, try another keyboard out.
Use cache mate should kill alott of the lagg
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
No lag here. But yea another keyboard might help.
I noticed that it's app dependent. In some apps its fast, and other apps its laggy/sluggish. The native SMS/MMS texting client slugs behind in screen refresh on the keyboard. Other apps go smooth. I am using BETTER KEYBOARD 8 (paid version), instead of the native keyboard.

i also fin that it lags badly when typing.just dosent keep up and i am by no means the fastest typer.
phone is standard apart from the launcher, standard keyboard. has the latest over the air update on it.
Hard reset after an OTA update? Cures 99% of problems.. no lag here btw

My runs perfect with lp plus, you have to much running in the background probably! Better 8th & swift are great I have both, using swift now as I feel it's a little better for me.
I had to uninstall Launcher Pro Plus because it took like 3 seconds for a swipe on the screen (the first/second times) to move. It was unbearable.
The original launcher has a lower FPS but at least it works. It sucks in comparison to LPP but if it works, it beats just about anything.
With Blur, things are significantly laggy.
With Launcher Pro, the default animation times create a lot of useless lag, so, under LP preferences, I changed the animations times to instant (eg. zero) or near instant, and I have absolutely no lag anywhere anymore. This is on rooted stock 1.8.7.
its the stock apps. they arent optimized for our phones. if you ran the 2.3.4 you could tell. the keyboard or anything didnt lag on there. even though its buggy.
install better keyboard, that doesnt lag for me. i use swype and it doesnt lag. also install the TWlauncher in themes&apps. it doesnt really lag at all, smooth as butter.
thanks for the reply
i will give the suggested options a try
The new swype beta crashes my phone... it was great except for emails and passwords.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G on the network with the most backhaul, whatever that is. This post might have errors as I hate touchscreen keyboards.
Laggy?
Several issues to take into account:
The launcher that you use. I use None, so that takes the burden off my cpu a lot
The ROM. Stock 2.3.4 is sloww. but can try Ninja or others
The app killer. Try use one that does the job of getting rid of stray processes at least on an hourly basis. Android Assistant is the one I use.
Try and use Start Up auditor, and make sure you dont have unwanted code getting into the mess.
If you have apps in your ext SD that is also a problem.. mine are all in internal SD.
As one previous post mentioned try and freeze unwanted bloatware.
Believe it or not, if your battery is not in a good shape, that will put a burden on the CPU.
Use SetCPU and create profiles. Dont let the phone run out of memory.. that is also a killer. If u use LP, try ant leave it in memory. See if that improves things.
Use Elixir and see who is bugging you.
cheers !
my 2c (AT&T model but in Australia)
- stock froyo = laggy. Launcher pro or ADW helps.
- stock gingerbread = mostly fixed, would be fine for most IMO. Launcher pro flies. Blur is still there however sucking valuable juice and cycles
The ultimate solution? unlock BL and custom ROM. There is nothing wrong with this phone's hardware, its motorola's build that lets it down.

EVO 3D and ADW Launcher...

Anyone else notice that the app drawer within ADW is EXTREMELY laggy on the EVO 3D? I've tried messing with all of the settings and none of them seem to have an effect. I've even made the app drawer as small as possible (minimum amount of vertical and horizontal apps per screen) and it's still incredibly slow and laggy.
Tried uninstalling it and no change. Haven't tried using ADW Ex because I didn't want to have to pay for it if it isn't going to fix my issue, but I will if I have to.
Anyone else experience this?
I went ahead and just bought EX and the lag is completely gone LOL
I'd still like to know why the free version lags though, and I'm sure if others would too if they are having the same problem. I doubt the solution is simply "buy EX"
Wish I would've caught you before you wasted your money! GO Launcher EX is far and away the best launcher out of all of them. It takes the best bits of launcher pro, adw, and miui, rolls them all into 1 flawless experience and it's free... Check it out and tell me I'm wrong please! Lol

[Q] Smoothest Launcher for SGS II?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm still forced to use good old Launcher Pro on my SGS II. Reason being that it's the smoothest launcher I've tried - in a sense that it's the most responsive to swiping screens. Also, its calendar widget is very nice, same as in Go Launcher.
I admit I'm a bit over-sensitive to even slightest lag. Even a several millisecond delay when swiping screens or opening the app drawer pisses me off.
My personal experience:
Go Launcher Pro - best customization, worst response. Heavy and sluggish. After deep sleep, there's a huge delay when swiping screens, until screens are cached. Until they are, it feels slllllloooowwww. Same on my Nook Tablet - horrific delays after deep sleep.
TouchWiz launcher - pretty damn fast and responsive, but even TW 4.5 has very limited customization. Also, when using multiple widgets, I start noticing an FPS drop in swiping from widget-heavy screens. For example MIUI Clock (from market) - swiping to and from the screen with it will always have noticable frame-skip.
Zeam Launcher - very smooth, but same frame skip problem as TW launcher. Unfortunatelly, very little customization.
Launcher Pro - fastest, lag-free swiping. Sadly, an abandoned project and missing lots of customization that'd be nice for modern ROMs.
Nova Launcher for ICS - fast and smooth, but still FCs every once in a while, lack customization. It's in beta, obviously.
ADW Launcher - haven't tested it for a while, but I remember not-so-great swiping response and lacking customization that I wanted.
What's your experience like? What do you recommend?

Where do you get that LauncherPro is an abandoned project? Yeah, it hasn't been updated in quite some time (May 2011, I think), but the forums on their website looks active, and it's still available in the market? I'm just curious, as I use LP, and I'd hate to see development on it stop.

Development on it has stopped a long time ago. Last update was simply to add transition effects.
Francisco has moved on to music app and other things. His "representatives" (whatever that means) kept telling everyone on the forums that development is not dead, he simply hasn't touched the code for past, oh, year or so. So yeah. It's as dead as it gets.
Forums are active mostly because people are asking when development will continue, begging for updates.
I find ADW Launcher EX to be smooth, and its far better than normal ADW.

This, for some reason the Program monitor seems to do this whenever I use it, I can have the digital clock and accuweather widget running along with the google search bar and droidstats and its smooth. Use the program monitor widget and it starts to stutter

This. Been using GoEx for a couple of months now. Have tried other launchers (incl Touchwiz), but keep coming back to GoEx for the reasons Mariosraptor mentioned.
I flipflop between LPP and adw Ex. Given up GO, I found it sluggish and I hate the home icon on the dock.
adw>LPP for customisation, LPP>adw for speed. If LPP had more gesture actions and we could resize dock icons it'd be perfect for me, but development is deader than a dodo.
Haven't installed/used TW for 6 months.

I like ADW Launcher EX as well... But the thing I REALLY like about LPP over ADW is the scrollable dock, allowing for 10 more shortcuts. If ADW had that, I would move over in a heartbeat.
Was a launcher pro plus user but go launcher is what I prefer due to its widgets, the Facebook and twitter ones are useful for quick updates. Calendar widget is good as well.
I find the supported decant not as smooth as launcher pro but no big issue.
ADW ex is also good use it on my tablet and its fast and customisable.

In the dock you can have other five apps in go launche. How? Just make use of the gesture feature on every icon on dock. That is what i have done for a long time.

the only thing that annoys me with ADW EX is that you can not have folders in your app screens like go launcher. yes i know you can have them on your desktop but not really the point is it and makes the app screen full of apps...specially if you have over one hundred...or the feature is there and i do not know how to work it? any ideas from someone to correct me please

Fair enough - but then you have to remember what each of the icons' gestures launches. It won't display it, right? I still prefer the scrolling dock.
EDIT: also, in LPP, you can add gestures to each of the possible 15 icons in the deck as well. Leading to a whopping potential 30 shortcuts, just in the dock. I don't use the swipe gestures though; 15 total dock shortcuts suffices for me for now.
Personally, i prefer and use 360 Launcher from XDA, that is surely the most customizable, fast, smooth and easy to use launcher ever seen!

Definitely Go Launcher for me. Highly customisable and zero lag.

[Q] alternate launchers?

Since most launchers are geared towards phones instead of tablets i was wondering what launche rs work well with the prime?
Stock launcher seems very laggy on the home screen, any fixes for this?
NOVA/Trebuchet and I've also heard ADW and SPB although SPB cost is a little on the insanely high side.

I've used adw ex and it was pretty good but doesn't work nicely with wizz widget. Very laggy scrolling in Facebook and twitter Widgets.
I don't have any lag with stock launcher if I set to normal mode(3rd icon in power management options)
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
i use Nova launcher, works great with root access and the only few problems I had with it were fixed in the last two updates (less than a week apart)
my main problem with the stock launcher is that with all my icons (like, close to 30 total) switching between screens laggs dramatically. to the point where switching is not smooth at all. I have continiously checked running processes to see whats eating my processor, nothing extra aside from the basic that i can see.... if anyone has ideas why my stock launcher is lagging please let me know :/

Go launcher poll - reduce lag

Just wanted to take a poll.
IF YOU INSTALL GoLAUNCHER 2.85 beta2 and select "DEFAULT ICON" size does this eliminate your lag? i find my lag to be almost gone completely.
Depends which screen transaction effect is choosen.
With the default or chord screen transition effect it is smooth enough to use GoLauncher as my default launcher.
BUT try "Cylinder" and the lag is horrible and makes it unusable. This is strange cause my Samsune Infuse ran all GoLauncher effects extremely smooth?
And to your question ...yes I need the default icon size for GoLauncher to run smooth.
