I went to the Microsoft Store today to check out a Lumia 800. I knew about the pentile matrix and all that. But what I wasn't expecting was to see burn-in images on the screen.
I noticed that no matter which application I open up, there was always a slight remnant of the "messaging" and "e-mail" tiles. It came as a surprise because I have never seen burn-ins on recent displays.
Has anyone experienced this? Or perhaps should I just assume that it's a phone that's likely been heavily stressed at the Microsoft Store? I hope it's just the unit I played with.
Also the whites aren't quite as white as my HD2. Can anyone give an opinion on the display of whites compared to other phones?

AMOLED screens do indeed suffer from burn in, unfortunately.
I haven't heard about burn-in of AMOLED screens, i must research it. Hopefully it'll fade. However i have noticed the whites are light blue. Really caught my attention because the blacks are so black.
EDIT: well apparently the burn in is permanent.
Apparently the burn-ins only happened while the same image is displayed.
And since it was a store and the demo models are usually stuck on the same menu screen for an excessive amount of time (especially if sleep is disabled and left over night).. burn in can easily occur.
I can say that in my 2 years of having the original Galaxy S, I've never experienced a burn-in

Comparatively speaking the chances of burn-in on LCD is negligible compared to OLED and plasma. You usually just get some temporary ghosting which disappears after a while.
I don't think you'll get a burn in on your Lumia with normal use. It sleeps automatically after a while, so this sort of things is prevented. I have never been looking at the same screen for hours, so a burn in won't happen very easily I think...
If you run your phone for hours at full brightness with a static image being displayed - as it is done in stores - you will notice burn-in on AMOLEDs. You will notice it on some other popular display technologies as well, but AMOLED is more susceptible for that kind of problem.
In real usage scenarios, you won't normally have to deal with burn-in.

I'm going to assume that under normal operations, the screen should do just fine without burn-ins.

I think indeed that the unit in the MS Store was just on the home screen for hours and hours. Not a real use scenario
Seems like a nice deal, over here it's €470, it's almost the same.
I got burn in on my focus; since then I've been very careful with my focus s and lumia. My best advice, besides the obvious of not leaving the screen on for extended periods, is to move your top 4 tiles around from time to time.

Depends on what you mean by normal usage. I had my screen on high, 5 minute timeout. Sometimes I remembered to lock it, sometimes I didn't and it sat there for 5 minutes. I won't do that again ;-)
Yeah that's not good for AMOLED.

I doubt it, but at the very least I'd have it set to dim at 30 seconds just to be safe.

one of my phone was the omnia hd witch has the first AMOLED screen and after 2 years my screen is perfect, now i bought a lumia 800 but i still have the omnia hd and the screen is simply perfect.

I haven't been back to the Microsoft store. If I go back and take a look at it in the near future, I'll try to get a few pictures. Chances are I won't though because my Lumia's coming in the mail
Im having the same issue, but mines 10x worse. It started with a small dark patch in the corner but slowly spread and now I have a really severe burn-in of my messaging, complete with "April" and my girlfriends name and the keyboard burned into it.

After seeing the screen on the samsung galaxy s II i'm pretty confident that its what i'll be getting, but...I'm concerned about burn in.
One of the reasons I was leaning towards the htc sensation is that with slcd I don't have to worry about burn in at all, but how much do i really have to worry about it?
I havn't seen many people complain about burn in on the first galaxy s, but there are still some cases.
Is it reduced on the galaxy s II?
Are the chances of this happening so low that I shouldnt worry about it?
How cheap/easy is it to replace the screen if this happens?

I´m an Omnia 2 I8000 owner since 10.2009. It was the first phone on market with Samsungs Amoled-screen.
I allways use Black themes.
I don´t have any problems with screen burn up to now. You can see it slightly on testimages, but in normal use, you won´t notice it at all! I would post pictures, but my Display was replaced(Dust under the screen) a month ago, so its new again...

Amoled screens are basically plasma screens for phones.
They're completely different technologies, but the pros/cons are almost the same.
lcds make a picture but the backlight is what allows us to see it so clearly.
amoled make their own light, but they have a lifespan.
so the pixels that get the most use tend to fade, and leave a 'burn in' effect.

Burn in happens as early as 4-6 months of use with most AMOLED based screens, this happens mostly on the clock section of the notification bar, there is a long thread about this on the SGS1 forums. Honestly burn in is the least of concerns, be more concerned about the yellow tinting issue on most SAMOLED Plus screens.
Well ive had a samsung jet for some 3-4 years, one of the first amoleds (i think)
and i dont have a hint of burn in, i also got a htc desire after that because i fell in love with amoled and that doesnt have any burn in either. Now i have my sgs2 and the amoled love continues. I have a plasma screen at home so i am very familliar with burn in (nasty shock in the morning when falling asleep with it on!).
I think if samsung thought these were going to burn in they would have put screen protection/pixel flushing just like they did with my samsung plasma tv. Its really not a worry in my mind and i use bright blue glowing themes which are the most aggressive on amoled pixels.
Ive read horror stories of burn in but those are just faulty screens/handsets.

never knew these AMOLED screens have image retention problems.
My Nexus One had terrible screen burn, the Froyo notification bar was clearly visable when not actually displayed. Hope the SGS2 does not go this way.

Yes there is a problem. My nexus one has permanent burn in. And I made a thread with many others posting pics of their burn in.
Its just a trait of amoled screens. My status bar, clock am pm, and keyboard are all burnt in to the screen on my nexus one.

I would assume that the efficiency boost would lessen the effect a bit because it should boost the pixel lifespan, but im not 100%.

Yes that is the question now, we don't know how much amoled plus improves this issue. I have to think that its gonna be much improved with this new generation.
Mine already seems to suffer from burn-in, most noticeable whenever my auto-brightness shifts to lower thresholds (had my SGS2 since the last day of June 2011). I wonder if Sammy can do any replacement for me.
I got a burn in too. The four bottom icons start to be visible with notification bar pulled down.
Looks like I ain't the only one with an sgs2 with this issue then. I notice it's only visible at low brightness - approximately 10-15%. And my notification bar has always been black.

Got mine since it's release in May, always used very low brightness settings and a low screen-off-timer, 30 seconds or one minute.
Status bar is visible on red background and very visible on blue, some icons and the clock time are present all the time.
Really pathetic after very moderate and careful use in five month.

I was really looking forward to the GS2 on AT&T, but then somebody mentioned screen burn, and I was just curious how susceptible to screen burn it is? Is it something that I would need to worry about?
I've had my SGS2 since may when it first came out. I noticed it last week when using the PlayerPro music app.
The background is on this app is grey which includes where the status bar normally is. I could see where the battery, time, alarm clock icon and signal bars have burnt in.
Then i noticed i can faintly see the home screen app icons when i pull the notification bar down.
So yes.. screen burn is real. Very disappointing. I'd rather have LCD than this amoled that starts to burn in after 4 months. I'm wondering if this'll be covered by the warranty.
Anyone else getting this too?

Did you leave your screen on for long periods of time? Screen burn in is a 'feature' of amoleds, but I think you've gotta try kinda hard to make it happen...

No I don't have the screen on for long. It is set to 15 second time out. I don't use it that much during the day at work. I never watch movies on it or play games. Just calls, text email and net with a few apps.
What brightness level you use?
I have it set too auto brightness. See attached.
Download PlayerPro its free. you might see burn starting on yours too. also show up in google sky map quite clearly.
I took a screen shot to see if it carried the effect over to my pc.. Don't laugh! The iPad burn works like that. It must be a memory related thing. Anyway..thats not the case on the SGS2
Well if you have auto brightness on, wouldn't that mean sometimes your brightness level would be exceedingly high enough to cause a screen burn? I haven't experienced any screen burn yet, even though I tend to have 4-5 hours of display time watching a lot of videos.
My brightness is at 50% and its definitely got some burn in. Very disappointing.

No really..it never seems that bright to me? If it ever did get bright i would turn it down as its a waste of battery

I don't think watching videos will do make noticeable burn. You need static images to create the burn. Download Playerpro, its free in the market, play a song and look at the task bar area and post back.

Well I downloaded playerpro and played a song (loca people by sak Noel-in case you were wondering ) and there appeared to be some very faint blobs where the status bar icons are. BUT they seemed to fade after a few seconds, maybe my screen is not quite there yet, but it seems to be heading in that direction.
I dread to think what I'd do if there was burn in anywhere other than the status bar. I think I would die.

Good tune! I didn't notice the burn until installed PlayerPro. It doesn't really show in other apps or homescreens. Hopefully it won't get any worse

I get a new phone at least once a year, sometimes as many as two or three times a year if I decide to sell/trade/upgrade, etc., so even in the event of some small burn-in, it's not something I'm going to obsess about. My phone is a tool, and it does what I need it to do, and when it doesn't, I get another... and I'm not rich, and I do like to take good care of my equipment, but I expect that there's going to be some trade-offs in terms of design... and I suspect that most of us knew about this AMOLED burn-in issue, same as with plasma TVs, though maybe not all.
Yeah but screen burn is going to seriously lower the value of the phone for a trade.

A year or two I can live with that. But 16 weeks? The phone cost more than than the average plasma TV too!

Thats all good and weel if you can afford it but most people cant and are tied in to 2 year contracts ive had my phone 4 months and the burn in is terrible i took it back to carphone warehouse and they tried to fob me off saying theyd never seen or heard of screen burn on a phone and to ring samsung so now my phones on its way to them to have the screen replaced under warranty
So for anyone suffering from this issue get onto samsung and get it sorted thats what the 2 year warranty is for

Just noticed on my Lumia that there's a thin fine purple line on the edge of the left side of the screen. I can see more of it the whiter the screen is, can anybody confirm if they have this too or if it's just my device?

Only noticable on gray/white backgrounds and not on colored backgrounds really.
It does bother me to some extend. Not enough to replace the phone a second time though (I did not exchange the first one because of this).
Not really like lines though. More like a subtle gradient that goes from far left into the right side.

Its only bothered me since I noticed it to be honest, mine starts at the top left, all the way to the bottom. It sticks out more at the top corner, then goes thinner as it goes down.
It's due to pentile amoled screen. And it's normal behavior.

I exchanged my phone for a second time even though I said I would not. It just bothered me too much. Took me three phones to get one with a screen that had good uniformity across the screen. Only the line bleeding visible at times but it does not bother me at all really.

That's an AMOLED 'feature'. I remember my Nexus One being like that, and when I set full brightness with light background I can make it out on the Lumia too.

I am sad to hear this mate... Am i expecting too much after my iphone? It is not noticeable with black background, but ie9, office and some other application has a bright background anyway, sot it is annoying there. Of course it is not until you realize this issue exists, but after that, you cannot stop paying attention to that...

my last two expensive flatscreens had some minor problems, Plasma was linebleed and so on...

I have to disagree with dk_iceman, iPhone 4/4S doesn't have this fault (don't know about 3GS, didn't own one) but fact of the matter is, this should be a fault, when we had such problems with our TV's, which even happen on LCD TV's, you get a replacement, I don't think such screen problems should be acknowledged as normal. Nokia have said for me to return my phone to them, but I'm checking for more problems, so I can give them a whole list of my expectations, I haven't had one problem with the iPhone 4/4S's screen, that's why I'm willing to pay more for a phone, this phone wasn't cheap too, so I think everybody should get what they paid for, ok software, can be solved, but for poor hardware, should be replaced. Agreed?
My girlfriend's Omnia 7 screen looks cleaner, she's had hers for two years now.
Some time ago I noticed that, in some very special situations, like under direct and strong artificial/sun light and a particular angle, I'm able to see a couple of small, very faint spots, kinda similar to those left by dried moisture (like a drop of water) underneath the screen. At first I though it was my bad for putting on a wet screen protector, but just the other day I had a look at the device of a friend of mine (no protector wahtsoever), and looking closely I found similar spots, just not two but a single and bigger one. This got me a bit puzzled, so I decided to take a look at a third device, this time a demo unit in a shop, and guess what? Also that one had a similar mark right in the middle of the screen.
Now, not that this bothers me much, since you can't actually see it unless you really try (I can't even catch it with a camera), but I'd love to know from you guys if this is a common "flaw" or I just happened to grab a "flawed" handful of devices...
Yup, I have these dark patches. You can see them sometimes if you look at a particular angle when the phone is booting up. I can't see them any other time though
I can see dark patches when the screen is dimmed, especially at night, I can't see it any other times, Nokia returned it to me because they couldn't see it. So they asked to send it in again, it took them ten days to just flash a ROM....I was pissed as it is.
When the Display is off I can sometimes see some "blacker" areas on the screen. According to Nokia These are splices where the glass is somehow glued to the display.
Thank you guys, at least I feel a little better about it now...anyway it still puzzles me how this is the first device I own in years with this kind of issue, and I really had many, both resistive and capacitive, with or without gorilla and even made of plastic. I still would class it as a fault, it makes my eyes burn.
Are you speaking about the spots which are visible in the dark if the screen is black?
I saw them when I did my screen black in diagnostics app - lcd test.
So I took a picture of "black" screen with long exposure (iso 400, 30 seconds exposure) and show it in nokia care service. Week after I got new display

Actually those aren't really "spots", it's some sort of light leak that all amoled devices have when displaying plain black: even if all the leds are supposed to be off there's still some electricity going through them. I had that on all of my amoled devices, on my Desire, on my SGS2 and on my Omnia W as well, it doesn't look that great but it's fine I guess. Weird that you still managed to get the screen replaced, maybe your unit actually had some excessive light leak.
Here I'm talking about a different thing, given that you have them you should be able to see those spots I described even with the device completely off if you keep it under a strong light and at the right angle.

Yeah that's it, the good old light leak
Anyway the picture you took being overexposed gives the impression of a huge issue, so I guess they replaced the screen right after looking at that, even tho in normal darkness conditions it's definitely not so annoying. Good for you that you managed to get it replaced anyway
lol a 30 second exposure will bring out the worst of the display. I can understand they replaced it after showing that image that sort of tricks them because it will never be even close to that visible to the naked eye.

I've preordered M10Pro, expecting delivery middle of this months but am still wondering if I've made a right decision. I have never used a phone with amoled as my daily driver. I drive a car quite a bit, using google maps for around 1h daily plus every 1-2 weeks for at least 5-6 hours a single day. Additionally I am pretty used to now using AOD (LG G6), it's not clear if AOD on M10Pro is changing its position in order to prevent burn in so these to plus navigation bar drives my crazy when I think I could spend considerable amount of money on a phone which will get burn in after a few months.

What are your experiences with amoled? What are you feeling when it comes to burn-in and M10Pro? Should I be even bothered?

i choose the Mate 10 6+128GB!
I know that for some of you there may be an option to choose between 10 and 10pro but for me, when I want to have a full guarantee locally options are -to buy 10 pro with amoled or to buy from competition which does not have amoled, so basically htc, which to me is not a real alternative
As per android central review on YouTube out today, after "several weeks" of usage he had no burn in issue for the Mate10 pro.

Will watch it straight away. Hope it clears all my doubts.
It will burn in eventually. It's a reality with AMOLED. May be sooner, may be later, as each screen is different but it will happen. This is why I really try to avoid AMOLED. I prefer peace of mind over a more saturated screen.
Not to mention I've never heard of the company supplying Huawei with their AMOLED screens. If I have to get one, it'd probably be a Samsung.
Not sure why LCD has so much hate. It's perfect on my Mate 10 and with HDR videos it's stunning. No worries about burn in too.

Don't worry they will know as soon as they get a burn in screen, I learned from it on my S8 for 2 months only burn in grrrr

I have seen the AOD on the Mate 10 pro in different locations, so i understand it will be moving about.
And navigation is not static, so maybe it won't be an issue ?
Everyone is going oled whether its LG, Apple, Pixel 2 and OnePlus. And there is that BOE manufacturer ready to bring out their oled as well and so will be seeing oleds even more. Apple and others know that oled is prone to burn in and yet saw it as fit to use on their important iphone x, which means the probability is low and depends on a certain harsh usage.
If Huawei covers warranty for a burn in it would be reassuring though. Personally, i don't use my phone in max brightness and prolonged periods with a static image. And i use the auto brightness most of the time. I haven't had a problem with my oled on the P9 plus after 1.5 years of usage.
Every big player will get Amoleds to their phone....
Why? Because of money and bussiness....
Why to make a perfect phone that will last for 3 years without a problem.
They need more to sell...... I would buy a mate 10 pro if there would be a ips display.... oled no....
I had a lcd once, on a sony : I hated it. I always had oled screens, and never had any burn-in problem (I keep my phones for 2 years usually) and I also use google map a lot>
I have now had my Mate 10 Pro for about 2 months and i am absolutly loving it.
I can confirm that the AOD is moving around, so nothing to worry about there, and the screen itself is stunnig to look at.
Will i get burn-in over time? I don't know. But i really like the screen and the pictures it creates.

Blotchy Black
Hi!
Is anybody experiencing a blotchy screen when you render plain black images? I noticed this in my stock gallery app, Netflix, and video player. It is noticeable in a very dark room. It bothers me since I know that when an OLED panel renders black color it turns off so no light is emitted. But in this case I see a blotchy black.
This "sooner or later", burn in is not how it works. I have a Galaxy S3 and a Note4 with zero burn in, even though I used both heavily for years. (Even for GPS, etc.),
The content matters. Like my sister had an S4 and it had Facebook Messenger burnt into the screen because she was chatting for so many hours.
And after she gave the phone to me just a few months back so I can sell it, the burn in went away after mixed use.
Tl;Dr: Burn in is more of a meme, it's more like retention. I mean the Mate10 Pro has on screen buttons but that's not a 100% chance that it will burn in.
Send it back and get a new one from Amazon. I saw this problem with the camera in white or clears walls. It seems "banding".
I acquired a second hand Mate 10 Pro 3 weeks ago (first owner bought it on the 24th of November), it already had burn-in zones: navigation dock button, Google Search, bottom system buttons bar and many other ones from various apps' icons... These zones are mostly noticeable on clear or white screen/pages (eg: about:blank URL in Chrome browser). At reception, I immediately selected a black theme and activated Battery's dark mode. Now I can see my own apps setup marking the screen... After only 3 weeks...
Am I the only one ?
I'm contacting Huawei customer service.
I finally went to Paris' Huawei customer care center. They told me they never saw/heard about such issue, hard to believe.
They kept my phone 24h and they replaced the full front part (including battery): they only keep the motherboard (can't say if it includes cameras' parts too).
They ensured me waterproofing should be the same. 200 meters after I left the building, I noticed a huge gap where the back plate should stick to the phone's body. So long for waterproofing I suppose.
I immediately went back, and in 10min they replaced the back cover for a brand new one; things are better, but after throrough look, I can see back cover is not perfectly glued... But hey, I have an almost brand new device now.
I took time to compare the demo devices they have, and the Mate 10 Pro had a burned-in screen too, quickly noticeable thanks to Chrome's about:blank URL
