[PICS] Post your car/driving mode screenshots - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Being an old-school 'car-puter' installer I love what the note can be used for in an automotive environment. For over 10 years I have been slamming PC's into the trunks of cars with custom power supplies, touch screens and wireless connectivity setups.
The advances in smart-phones over the last few years have made them excellent considerations for automotive infotainment systems. This was one of the primary reasons I bought my Note.
The amazing screen on the note is big enough to take on some of the best car navigation and infotainment systems out there. Combining the Note with a dock and a good quality audio connection to your car's sound system gives you amazing options for your ride.
Post your screenshots of your badass Note powered car system to show the world and inspire others.
(Mods - I posted this in i7000 and i717 forums as we don't have a 'Global' Galaxy Note forum that covers both chipsets)

Amazing app, thanks for the information!!

Thanks for the reply. I read on the reviews for Car Dock Home v3 that Car Mode Control needed to be installed (if you don't have an OEM Car Dock). I'm planning to use a universal car mount. Are you using this with the Car Dock? If not, did you have to install Car Mode Control... sorry to be asking so many questions... but I really like your setup and I'm trying to avoid any unnecessary downloads.

I am using the OEM car dock which is really well made, no need to install extra junk, I'd recommend springing for the extra bucks and going for the Sammy dock, I am happy with it.

Best dock. Never having to plug/unplug cables is a huge plus. Then having it auto launch profiles (Bright 100% until 6pm then 10%, BlueTooth on, Wifi Off) just by dropping it in the dock. The OEM dock is the only way to go IMHO.

What is the refresh rate like on "Car Dock Speedometer widget"?
I am surprised there is even such a things as most Widgets to not auto refresh very often.

Here's a question, does the dock have an audio out port like the desk docs? If I could leave my audio patch cable plugged in I would be sold on this, but still having my cable plugged in the top of my phone is a pita compared to being able to plug it into the dock and forget about it.

Yep, which is exactly why I bought it, you can send audio out over either the built-in 3.5mm jack or via USB. Ironically I ended up putting my audio out over a bluetooth A2DP connection which also sounds excellent.

Have you tried to use an NFC tag with your setup?
If you don't, I would suggest that you make the use of one to bring up your setting automatically when getting into your car!

Thanks man, Looks like Im going to have to look into one. I depend on my phone more then I should, and one this big does not sit well in cup holders.

OP, I already purchased the universal mount (mountek). The reason why I was hesitant about the OEM was because I wasn't sure if it would fit with my case. My question is, do you have a case and would it fit in the mount?

I don't have a case so cannot say, I doubt it would fit with a case.unless it was one of those folio covers that replace the stock rear cover as not to Change the phones profile. The cradle is not adjustable and it fits the phone very tightly

(WIP)NOOKColor car stereo

I know someone was going to beat me putting the nookcolor as a car stereo if I didn't hurry to do it but much respect for the guy that did this first . I worked on my Nookcolor, installing it as a car stereo this weekend on my 2004 Gmc envoy and still modifying my dash to make it blend in. Running Nookie Froyo. Now to work on developing a car stereo app will be great with build in FM radio and visualizer and equalizer. I'm barely learning how to develop apps reading some books on android app development and Java to make my app come to life but I do not have a lot of time, with school and work one tends to get a bit frustrated and tired. I'm hoping some one can help me out with my idea of an app if its not yet on the works. I was inspired byAndroid and everyone here in the XDA community to try and make some great ideas come to life. Android 100% right here
[Videos]
First video preview of set up running Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 sorry i recorded this at night.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mHQphUtmYs
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Until an actual interface adapter is made to bypass sound and volume control from the vehicle wiring to just a plain rca cable with 3.5mm Jack, I intend to use my tab as is. I will come up with new ideas tho.

NOOKCOLOR Indash Stereo
________________________________________________________________
Test in dash v2.2
Rom: NookieFroyo 0.6.8(reverted to NookieFroyo for livewallpaper and video support since PhiremodCM7 does not have it yet)
Apps:
Pandora Radio
mVideoPlayer(im having issues with this app, sometimes video shows normally then next time video gets slow)
Button Savior(I replaced Softkeys with ButtonSavior)
Media Volume Bar Widget
WidgetLocker Lockscreen
ADWLauncher EX
Beautiful Widgets
Gauge Battery Widget
MortPlayer
PowerAMP
museek
StayAwake
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Test in dash v2.1(overclocked)
Still same as v2 just added a couple more apps to make feel a bit more like indash stereo.
Apps Added:
Stayawake(this works great so far on phiremodCM7 plug in USB cable and screen stays on, very stereo like feeling, better yet it dims out to save battery but still stays awake)
Last FM(working so far)
ADW Ex launcher
Miren browser(Browser of Choice)
Apps removed:
TuneIn radio(The app started giving me trouble and forcing close, worked for a while tho.)
Apps not working so far:
YouTube or flash( Flash and video playback does not work as stated before but I'm pretty sure it will soon. I tried watching transformers 2 to see how it looked and did not work on phiremod CM7 yet.)
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Test in dash v2
Changed Nook Rom to:
Phiremod CM7 (looks great very responsive, hotspot data connectivity way faster with my HTC EVO on 3g not on 4g. Will test on 4g to see how much faster it connects but no youtube)
Apps Using and still testing:
TuneIn Radio for local stations(since no bluetooth)
PowerAmp (using this app because has build in EQ and song can be change with finger swipe)
Pandora(running 100%)
MortPlayer (still sounds good but prefer PowerAmp because of the look and EQ ) "DSP Manger still doesnt work"
I still need to add volume and mute widgets.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Test in dash v1
Nookie Froyo 6.7 (Did not test 6.8 yet)
Using PowerAmp app as main choice for stereo. It includes EQ settings.
MortPlayer Installed
Pandora Installed, works great if connected to phone hotspot.

Apps that I'm trying to develop.
IndashStereo App.
With Navigation compatibility.
YouTube video compatibility.
Bluetooth compatibility if tab comes with it. Probably all tabs will for now on.
Facebook and tweeter song share buttons.
Meaby traffic updates.
IndashStereo Remote
This is another app I want to develop which I will need Bluetooth.
Should have Bluetooth compatibility to connect your Android Phone to connect to Indash Stereo app on the tab so you can share music and use the phone as remote control for app.
Suggestions and opinions are welcome.

FM radio might be a dead end for you, I'm pretty sure hardware investigations revealed that the FM chip isn't equipped with a antenna or wired to the headphones for use as an antenna. Perhaps once bluetooth is working you could pair it with some sort of bluetooth radio?
Looks nice though, have you thought of applying a black theme to make look even more smooth with your car?
It sucks no FM. I'm hoping someone does get Bluetooth working FM and navigation would work with that, it would be great. A black theme would look nice, I'm still exploring a lot of things with the nook like cm7 and honeycomb see how everything would work with that. I did this as a prototype I say. Later on I might change the nookcolor for something else but same size. I still want to develop an app for car stereo and such for any tab. I know it wount be easy but nothing is impossible specially here in XDA

I'm happy to see this thread, thanks for taking the time to share your work, JCAndroid.
I had a carpc for a few years; after getting fed up with FluxMedia's treatment of the hobbyist community as well as some issues due to outdated hardware, I returned to the stock radio when I got my Droid. The Droid provided most of the functionality of the carpc, however, I do occasionally miss having a carpc though, and I have thought about using the NC in the same manner.
The main drawback for me at this time is lack of navigation. If Bluetooth was usable, then this would obviously be a moot point as the navigation could be achieved using BT GPS.
Anyhow, looking forward to seeing your progress and thanks again the thread.

I was looking at carpc's also but found it to complecated to do at least for me but it works. When I saw Android tabs were available I saw the chance to do this. I had wanted to this with a galaxy tab but to pricey, but I found my self with the NookColor and once there was a way to rooted I came up with something ofcourse I know other people have put tabs as indash stereos its much easier to use than carpc but would be better with an actual car stereo app. If Bluetooth would work on the Nook we would have more useable stuff I hope someone gets it to work. I'm just trying to come up with something new. Right now I use my Evo 4G as my navigation device. But thanks for the support motivation helps a lot.

looks cool, might be funny to watch my subs shake the nook to death lol
any update on this?
as of right now, w/out using phone wifi hotspot - i don't see any purpose to this.
it has no line-in for using a media player with more storage.
once it's installed better, you won't have much access to swap out the microsd for updating your music.
there are no applications that compare to anything that a carpc can do.
i would much rather a standard in dash cd player then leave my nook in the car.
i'm having a hard time understanding the point of this... if you have a phone that can do wifi hotspot, then your phone can run pandora and plug into the line in of a standard stereo... and probably sound a whole lot better...

Let's see what you can make happen with this!
Update Peeps!
Yea you can use a carpc and it can be better but it is just something new to try. You can use your phone but sound has no difference believe me I did a number of test and if your worried about leaving it in the car at night there is no problem it gets pitch dark you can even see it but the point is that you want something portable and cool, that is why i did this mod.
I updated to to Phiremod CM7 and let me tell you hotspot connectivity is way faster but youtube doesnt work. So far so good. Still testing it.
Since. No! Bluetooth im using TuneIn Radio App and works nice on Phiremod CM7 with my HTC Evo hotspot on 3G Not on 4G so it can be much faster but will try.

Lol my does not shake. I have two 12" Kickers with a 700w pioneer amp. It pounds but the Nook stays intact. Well at least with my dock.
Do you have any power management going on? I couldn't tell but I would imagine if you did some sort of modification to the power cord so it would be as flush as possible to the dash and ran it to a USB car charger, you could theoretically make it so all you had to do was slide the Nook in from right to left, thereby connecting it to the charger as it is secured.
I personally have begun to explore the possibilities of using it as a carpc myself. I'm planning a drive down to Florida from New York in April and I'm hoping to use it as a the Nav/Media hub (I have a GPS, Pioneer BT sound system with an amp, and there will be two Dincs in the car but still, you can't beat a 7" version of any of those). I''l either be mounting it in my Civic or my Altima, depending on which we decide to use. The Civic as much better DIY mounting possibilities, and I've already drawn up some ideas. The only thing I'm waiting for is the BT
EDIT: For comparision, here is the link that shows the inside of my Civic, and if you Google the interior to a 2007 Altima, you'll see how theres little to no possibilities for mounting without cutting into anything.

O that's right I never mentioned what I did for power management. I use to have a Kenwood double din stereo with 6.5" screen but took that off. I had to cut and trim in order to put my dock were the stereo was. I used the nookcolor leather case and cur it, I was going to make a dock myself like the way the HTC Evo car dock is but I just wanted to try this like this first. Then I went and bought me a cheaper stereo. The stereo I put it in the passenger compartment box that's y you don't see it on the pics, it is hidden. I modified my compartment box also, I had to cut and trim the back of it to run cables out and to make space for a small computer fan for the the heat of the stereo to be exhausted out. When I dock my Nook I just plug my 3.5mm headphone Jack and USB charger. I'm still trying to modify the connector of the USB charger, I don't like the cable just hanging there. But works great so far.

Since DSP manegers EQ does not work I'm going to try and see if the new LifeVibes app works later on.

what are you using to hold the nook in place around the edges?
i'm thinking of making my own 'case' and just contemplating different types of ways to hold my nook in place.
btw: from one fellow hardware modder to another - very awesome work.
pointless or not somethings are just to cool to not try.

Thanks for the complement.
Before I did the mod I went looking on eBay for case holders but none of them looked as durable as the original NookColor leather case holder, so I bought the the leather case holder for the NookColor it was pricey but I took a chance and used it to incorporate it to my dash. What I did was cut the holder and just use that as the mount dock. So far it has been working really good throughout bumbs and speedhumps it stays intact in its mount holder. I'm still thinking of changing it tho to a better looking angle or adding angle adjustments.
SuperHTCEvo
I imagine if done well such a mod would be an excellent complement to any dash while garnering many compliments from passengers (even would be thieves).

Bluetooth to AUX ?

Anyone have any good solutions? I am trying to find some, but coming up with older outdated results.
I basically want a bluetooth receiver that I can plug into my AUX input of my car. This being used for music, GPS and calls. I would also like something that can keep power through the car lighter if possible.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Just wanted to warn people there are two versions of this. The BTAXS and BTAXM. On Ebay you'll see both and the M is cheaper, but that one only does bluetooth calling no a2dp stereo. So you want to buy the BTAXS.

Their English is pretty bad but from the part of the description I can make out it sounds like a A2DP receiver, so it should work.
Just so you know, amazon has this a bit cheaper. I think amazon can be trusted more than ebay imho.

Quick update, I received my Scosche motorMOUTH II Stereo from the ebay I linked. I received it the day after I placed the order. It works great, sounds great. People can tell I'm on speakerphone but they understand me fine. The only con is that you can't charge it while using it. it usually prevents you, but I was able to get it to charge while running, the problem is that you will get the weird feedback sound from the car lighter through aux cable.... Not sure how to explain it.

That's a ground loop. Google ground loop isolator or ground loop filter.
The one I have looks exactly like the PAC SNI-1/3.5 or the PGLI35 (just google those terms) and it works very well - don't pay over $15, I think I paid less than $10 three years ago. It looks like the Kensington Noise Reducing Car Audio AUX Cable has it built-in if you need something longer.
I got this one for $32 at tmobile store with the 50% off coupon. Its a headset that comes with an adaptor to plug a 3.5mm audio jack and a stereo headset.

Yes. Under each bluetooth device you pair to on your phone you can select whether it's used for music, calls, or both; and you can pair with two devices simultaneously. I do this successfully all the time with my Kensington Liquid Aux (for music in the car, does calls too but the mic is crappy) and a cheap BT headset from LG.
It's a shame that Kensington unit is hard to find now, the remote it comes is SUPER handy and it's something I haven't seen included with any other BT bridge. I attached the remote to my Civic's steering wheel and it literally looks stock.
Another good bridge for music only is the BluBridge mini-jack Rx, battery lasts a long time and you can power it with any USB car charger, really good range too. I got one last year and liked it so much I got a second during Christmas to give away as a gift. I use it at home or during small get-togethers so I can stream to any stereo or set of portable speakers.
Ive been using this one http://cgi.ebay.com/IOGEAR-Bluetooth-Wireless-Audio-Transport-Headset-NEW-/150443532234?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2307221fca
Not trying to be rude or anything but why use bluetooth?
Why not just plug your phone directly into the Aux?
I have one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001DDE4VY/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/175-8678155-4748113
And it works well. It's expensive....and it doesn't plug into your Audi port.....and the Mic isn't built in ....the Mic comes with it, you have to plug it in and clip it on to your shirt. The satechi device works real well though.

Car dock?

Has anyone found a good car dock for the 4g? I want to find something so I can position the phone on the lower console and use Google maps/navigate for my GPS, and have it charging as well. The dock needs to allow access to the headphone jack, as I also plan to connect to car stereo aux input. The beats audio sounds better than the car CD player.
Ideally, the dock should be really easy to put in/take out the phone (without risk of damaging the usb port). Also prefer to not need adhesive to mount it if possible

Ideally, the dock should be really easy to put in/take out the phone (without risk of damaging the usb port). Also prefer to not need adhesive to mount it if possible

Verizon sells a car dock. http://www.verizonwireless.com/ibolt-car-mount.shtml $30
It's the only one I have seen available so far. Interestingly enough it is cheaper through Verizon then on any other site ($35).

Thanks. Since the price was actually less at the VZW store, I went in tonight to look at one to see if my phone would fit in the dock with my TPU case on the phone . The phone fit okay - well enough to dock properly without stressing the connector. Since the sales tax would be less than the $5 shipping on Amazon, I went for it. Much to my surprise, I got a $7 discount, making it $25 out the door. Very happy with the dock so far. Now to figure out best mounting location in car and run the cables.

Cool. I've been thinking about getting one myself. Please let us know your thoughts after using it for a bit as I'm sure it could help others decide to get one or not. Will probably help me as well.
I've got the iBolt dock on the way, which I think is the same one you're talking about. Used one with my Rezound too and it worked well.

The dock is the Verizon branded iBolt car dock.
My initial impression is still positive despite not finding the perfect spot for it in the car yet. Yesterday, I simply stuck it to the windshield, but I prefer it lower.
Pros
Made just for the Dinc4g. Fits fine with my TPU case, and it also has an insert for using without a case. Also works with the Seideo Active case.
Appears to be of good quality
Power plug in the back with same micro-usb connector
Phone immediately recognizes it is docked and switches to landscape for everything
Automatically switches to Car mode, All icons are big and driving friendly
Can use Google Navigation (I disabled VZNav app)
Google Navigation plays well with Google Music, automatically lowering the volume when turn directions are given
Car app can be set to automatically turn on and connect bluetooth devices when docked (works well)
Cons
Does not come with charger, you must supply your own
Blue power indicator LED is very bright
Car app display is always on (but if you exit the Car app, the screen will time out normally)
Car mode uses their Music app, which is oddly not GPS voice friendly. I have not found a setting to change which music app it will use
No lead in for the in-dock connector. Must be careful when inserting and removing to not bend it
Questions
The HTC Car app does not have a lot of useful settings, mostly bluetooth related
(I am not currently using any bluetooth devices, and am using a patch cord to stereo aux input)
Edit: I am now using the HTC A100 CarClip for streaming audio to stereo. Works great, but doesn't work for phone calls, which is truly annoying.
Gripes unrelated to dock
Google Maps/Navigate at some point removed the separate Nav volume control. With Google Music, the Nav app will automatically lower the volume while the GPS voice talks. However, listening at a normal volume in gMusic, the GPS voice is way too quiet. Using the HTC Car built-in music app, the music does not lower or pause, but the Nav voice is at about the same level. While testing GPS/Music, I got a call and the in-call volume is super quiet and the nav voice does not pause during the call and it's super loud compared to the in-call volume...
I will update the above lists as I find things

Tab 2 10.1 audio/video/usb(charge) cable

Hello,
I'll be hooking up my tab in the car and I'm looking for a cable that will charge over USB and provide audio out in one.
I found this guy on Amazon but it only says it works with the original Tab.
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0054MV84Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=A36WKB83D3HR47
The video out is mirrored so I would just leave that part unplugged.
Does anyone have experience with this or something similar with the Tab 2?
Thanks!
I just ordered one. I'll give it a whirl and report back!
Be interesting to see how you get on, I'm in the process of mounting my P5110 in the car as well. I don't think the video would work anyway, but the audio should...
What bracket are you planning on using if you don't mind me asking?
I actually ended up making my own, a TV mount coupled with a gel case.
TV mount: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0044YMQIW/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00
Gel case: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009L7OMVG/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
With a little modification, it worked out quite well.
I like this setup because I can easily reach the tablet to control Pandora, Stitcher, Maps, etc, and still swing it over for a passenger to watch Netflix or browse the web. If I can get this cord to work, I'll be set!

Has anyone had success with this on 10.1?

Got the cable in the mail today. I hooked it up and everything works as expected.
I can't speak for the video plug, but the audio works perfectly and the usb charges as expected. I couldn't be happier!

Very nice setup, and with the minimum of cables hanging out of the Tab.
I must order the same cable now that you confirmed that it works, and post a pic once I have it mounted in my car.
Currently my trusty i9000 handles all my in car android needs with Navigon etc.. time to upgrade.
I still need a way to attach the cable to the mount without it looking like junk, but since it splits close to the usb/av end of the cable, this shouldn't be too hard.
Definitely post some pics once you have yours set up.
Since this is mainly going to stay in the car, I also set up Tasker to perform a few tasks when the device gets power.
On power connect:
- Turn screen on (I believe this happens anyway though)
- Set brightness to auto
- Set screen timeout to 24hrs (There is also a function to keep the screen from turning off, but it still dims the screen close to the devices set timeout, which I find annoying)
- Play audio (if paused)
On power disconnect:
- Pause audio
- Set screen timeout to 2min
- Lock screen
Just some food for thought.
Looks great!

So we can get audio out thru the 30-pin connector? hows the sound quality vs. the headphone jack? i assume since it works for the 10.1 tab 2 it should work on the 7.0, would love for a nice single connection setup like that when I work out a way to do an in-dash setup once i figure out a way to relocate the AC controls.
edit: 500th post :highfive:
has anyone got this working on a galaxy tab 2 7.0 (p3110 pref)
ive bought 2 diffrent cables and neither has routed audio out via dock,
is there something i should be doing within android to enable dock mode or route audio out via the connector or will it do that automatically?
i really need audio to come out via the dock connector so i can charge and play audio out of the one cable.

The audio on the 30 pin is the same audio on the headphone jack....... its audio.
The only difference between the 10 and the 7 is that the 7 has no video on the 30 pin
I bought a similar cable as yours But I cant get it to work the audio wont out through the cable only on the device. Any setting that I should do? Could you please show me your set up? Thanks you.

Do you happen to know someone with the tab 2 7.0 that you can test that cable with? I'm thinking about ordering one but would like confirmation that it works. Not interested in video, just audio and charging.

If it works on the p-51xx it will work the same on the P31xx except no video on 31xx 2.7.0 tabs
the pinouts are exactly the same.
So, will this cable bring video out from p5100?
Did anybody tried it on p5100?
Thanks

CHeck the Samsung accessories page for the adapter, if it says its compatible it is, if its doesn't list your model its not.
Just curious here...I've been long considering taking my Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch apart and somehow fashioning a Double Din head unit out of it. But I'm a little skeptical now because:
If I'm reading this right, you guys are saying that only audio comes out of the USB connector thing? But that doesn't make sense to me because why wouldn't the audio sound, and video sound be handled the same way? It just seems like to me they would be essentially the same thing, but then again I'm not very tech on the software side so idk

From what I gather, your audio in whatever form will be carried through the 30-pin connection on the GTab7.0. The only difference in the pin connector from the GTab10.1 and GTab7.0 is that Samsung, in their infinite wisdom, omitted the video pin on the GTab7.0.

Different dock app launch for car and desk?

Loving my S4 so far (Even though Verizon didn't send a sim card with it and Verizon wouldn't issue a new one in store to me until today!). I've been using it on Wifi so far and trying to set it up as much as possible. I have both the Ibolt car dock and the Samsung desk dock. Is there a way to have the phone determine to launch say the alarm clock app when docked in the desk dock and the car app when docked in the car dock? Right now it appears I must use 1 app auto launched when docked in either, but it's not enjoyable to have the car app launch on my desk dock when going to sleep....

Johnny, unfortunately there is no way to set both the Dock'n Drive and the Clock as separate launch apps. However, we will update the Dock'n drive in the next days so that you can click on the speedometer and have a weather widget when used at home. We would recommend to simply make a short cut to the clock, or your favorite alarm clock app directly from one of the 18 "shortcuts" and use it like this in your Samsung desktop dock. Hope this makes sense?

1. Get a couple NFC tags.
2. Stick them on or near each dock.
3. Set up an NFC task for each tag to launch whichever app you want with each dock.
4. There is no step 4.

Yea, I considered using NFC tags, but my experience with using them with the Galaxy Nexus was sub par. Maybe I'll give them another try, however they start peeling off the car dock from the heat which is annoying and ugly. Same with the desk dock, it'll look ugly with a big sticker on it unless I can put it on the bottom and it still notices it. I even have the task launcher pro or whatever it's called (haven't used it for at least 2 yrs) to write/read/erase NFC.

Yeah, if possible, I prefer grabbing a screwdriver and putting the tags inside the dock (I also have tags behind certain light switch plates in the house). Anyway, good luck on your searches for a solution!
