Well I just got a new GS2 from Vodafone in Australia, I havent really used it much since I got it a few days ago because it wasnt activated yet, but now it has and I put it on charger and it gets extremely hot, I downloaded battery monitor and the temperature was in the 50s (Celsius)!
I just put it down for a while and it cooled right off so maybe it only gets extremely hot while charging and being used?

It's normal that a phone gets warm, but it isn't normal that it gets really hot. Don't flash anything and bring it back for exchange or repair.

Mine has gotten pretty warm playing games while charging in the summer, although not too hot to hold comfortably. Now it's winter and it barely gets warm doing the same.
So unless yours gets too hot to hold I'd say it's within the norm, but just to clarify, does it get hot just from charging or are you using CPU intensive apps at the same time?

change the kernel
Use a kernel that supports Under Clocking (Siyah or DK)
and use Set Cpu to set Profiles
Set Profile Charging to 200:500
And Done no more Heat Issues
My GS2 never had hot problem other than when I used 3G alot, it is NDT MIUI GINGER 2.3.7.
Don't use it for intensive purposes such as gaming when charging. Browsing, e-mail and youtube should be fine.
It does get very hot when you charge and play a 3D-intensive game at the same time.
While charging and just basic use like Facebook and stuff it got up to 51 but as soon as I put it down within 5-10 minutes it was back under 40. Is the problem most likely the battery or phone?
Also I wanted to stay stock but I guess if this gets worst.ill have to root it.

Get Voltage control from the market and undervolt, it wells keep the phone temp down.
Hopefully you are rooted
Im not rooted, just on stock still.
Also with the update it seems to be getting a bit better, I was playing Minecraft while charging to see if it got hot, as well as some other games and it stayed at around 36 which isnt too bad is it?
Also dont know if it is just my new Sammy or all S2s but my screen isnt very bright at full brightness, and it is sort of dark like contrasted, again it might just be how its meant to look I'm not sure, just want to make sure theres nothing wrong while Its still new on warranty!

Dude people telling you that a boiling hot phone with stock are freaking nuts.No stock kernel should reach 50 DEG. ever althought 2.3.4 was well known for over heating problems and thats why with 2.3.5 you have noticed a drop to 36 which is quite acceptable but keep and eye on it cos the more apps you download the more it could rise cos the more apps there will be open in the back ground. As for the screen in my opinion,no its not normal.Ive flashed various kernels and when Ive flashed a bad one my screen has lost brightness and the whites have gone from white to almost a light brown or light grey and when I reflashed a new kernel to fix the problem my screen became bright and the whites glowed like super bright white.I beleive you have a kernel problem and if you can handle being without your phone a while then make use of your warranty and try to get it changed using this info to convince the service centre you have a faulty kernel. Its the best thing you can do if you want to stay on stock.

Thanks for that mate yeah I remember hearing about the awesome s2 screen and then i wasn't that impressed but i think it might be mine!
Problem is i don't know if i have enough evidence for warranty.
Maybe i should just go root, but then if the overheating gets worst is it easy to go back to stock for warranty?
One last thing, so you think its a kernel problem? Will changing kernels completely fix the issue if it is a kernel problem?

If you want to root and give it a try`Id recommend a CF-Root kernel as they are basically stock rooted kernels just pimped up a bit and very simple to install and easy on your phone and battery. If you want to unroot you just reflash the stock kernel.Always advisable to buy a USB jig from ebay if you are going to start flashing. They cost around 2 to 5 bucks depending on where you live and it will clear your bin counter which counts the number of times you flash your phone. If you send it of under warranty and the counter is not at zero then the warranty is void.Good trick to know.
EDIT:Then again you could say that your phone reboots itself once a day so you think it might have a problem. They will send it of and most probably reflash the firmware and therefore the kernel alsnly problem is its a long time without your phone when you could do it at home yourself. But then again thats what a warranty is for if you want to stay stock.
Max brightness, charging, and playing a stressful game like gta 3 would put the phone at its hottest; in fact the firmware inn running disallows max brightness whilst on charge. I'd check Kies for an update; if it continues, go straight back and replace.
Also a case can help dissipate heat, or opposite, depending on material.

My note gets hot as well, especially when taking a video for a few minutes. I only have a flip case so the back cover is stock. I assume the heat is from the cpu area (top left?) Under normal use heat is ok. I also noticed that the video recording and play back is not smooth, even with most apps off. Hopefully an OS upgrade will help. These N American Notes have the qualcomm cpu which seems to perform slower.
RNC
Take the thing back and demand a new one, no it should not get that hot. I use the s**t out of mine (battery last 8 hours) and it never ever gets hot. I have a white one and the thing has yet to lag and is super fast, do not miss my SGS2 at all. Well, I do miss CM9 but now I'm getting O/T.
Take it back ASAP.
just put that flip case on and notice it is getting pretty warm quick while using it for a while. i bought mine here in xda dont think i can take it to a store for return !!!
I can feel some warmth coming from mine right now, and my Streak used to do the same.
I've noticed mine gets hot right below the camera when multitasking for a while, or playing a graphics intense game like shadowgun or dead space, usually right after I finish with the game, close it and it will be hot and will start to cool down within 5 minutes. I also have a speck candyshell case in my black note. I might go and replace it if it keeps happening.

Hey rolo,
How hot is ur galaxy note after roughly 6-8minutes of shadowgun gaming?
I don't notice mine reaching a really high temperature, lets say "warm"? Not Hot as in really hot e.g. streaming HD movies for 6-10minutes.... Does ur note goes that hot by streaming HD vids?

Ok so Im almost convinced that the mayor contributor for heating the phone isn't the processor, but the screen! My phone while in idle in my pocket sits about 84f, I surf the web for 10 minutes and the phone was at 95f, on top of that I played shadowgun for about 5 minutes on top of that and got it to 100f, now I took the case off and put it in my car ac vent with the backplate against it and it wouldn't drop temperature, flipped it over so the screen would be against the cold air and within one minute the internal temperature of the battery had dropped to 93f just by cooling down the screen, Im on xda now and it dropped a few more degrees, granted Im running an overclock kernel at 1.75ghz at the moment so that might add to the temps my phone is putting out, gonna flash the stock kernel back in tonight and test and see if there's any difference.

Thanks for bringing this up, it's quite relevant to my interests.
Mine also gets hot. I recently upgraded my folks' phones to ATT Galaxy S II's (non Skyrocket) and they both get very hot when surfing on battery power via data. My battery monitor widget said 103'F at one point.
My Note also feels a little laggy (not hugely so) and has crashed a couple of times. The battery life is atrocious (coming from an iPhone 4)... I'm considering exchanging it at ATT as I'm still well within my 30 days. Rooting and freezing all the usual suspect apps hasn't helped.

My first note would her extremely hot between 117f and 130f while idle on a charger from the top half up. Used a thermal temp sensor from my liquid cooling to measure temp. According to a friend of mine manager at an att, said the heat problem is the biggest for return and that from what he's found out talking a Sammy rep that the cpu and memory in some units through shipping and handling have been loosened from their respective heat transfer system.
So basically manufacture defect and if it gets hot replace it. It'll hurt the internals.

Deny.

but if your s3 is placed in the sun it is getting very hot and it will reboot by itself.
happend to me. i had to pull out the battery to stop the re-re-reboot process
I have yet to feel any significant heat on the S3, even while charging. My S2 on the other hand would get warm frequently but it never bothered me.

It overheats with the overheat app it comes with. I managed to bake a potato in one full charge.
Compared to my old HOX, the SIII is a fridge.
It warms up ever so slightly if you run some benchmarks on it but its the equivelant temperature to breathing on your own hand.

Today while charging the phone I dropped it in a bag of unpopped kettles. Guess what I have now. Popcorn. Boy does this phone overheat.
Yeah, I was just confirming if it was a fluke. According to him the phone even overheats while making call which IMO is not possible.
YES
OK this sucks.
Years ago, I got the Iphone 4 and you had to put a cover on it because of the antenna issue.
I get the S3 and to protect it, i get a cover and within no time, after putting it on the phone, the phone overheats, locks up, lags,
If i am charging it, it locks up. I was driving shortly after i put the case on, and it kept making noise but i was driving so i couldnt look at the phone. then once i got home. i noticed it locking up and really warm, bottom right hand corner.
This really sucks as i love the phone but I do know, overheating like this is not good for electronics and will lessen their lifespan.
anyone else having cover issues?

It gets rather warm when it running stuff that puts quite some load on CPU, GPU whateverPU, yah, but not to an extend where one could call it "overheat".
So far it's always been below 50°C - I think that's a "no" on the original question.
Hello,
first I would like to apologize, if this has been already discussed or asked or if posting in a wrong section.
Just I'm very worried and I don't have much time to browse and search for a solution now, so I decided to ask.
I bought my SGS2 in June. So far everything has been more than fine.
Usually I'm charging the phone during the night. 2 days ago, when plugging it off the charger, I noticed that the
phone was really hot.
A little bit earlier I had installed the GoPower app. It had showed a warning, that the battery is over 50'C.
Now I'm thinking if that might be caused by this app... ? Or just earlier there was nothing that would show me
the warning. But on the other side I think that I must have felt the phone getting hot...
Please help me!!
it maybe because of app, when i install swype and plug in charger it goes to 48C
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I have swype installed in my ROM. Never used it though Now I have uninstalled GoPower and we'll see how it will behave on the next charging...
Any other ideas please ?
It's not the Swype keyboard. I use it all the time without any over heating even when charging. You must have apps running in the back ground.
Anything 3D intensive can cause overheating.

I think it also depends on the room temperature.
48 degree Happens on my S2 either..nerver bothered about it...whats d reason behind it?
Darkman, you should try GB for eg-and see if its any better. My wife was running 4.0.4 stock and hers would heat up like yours.Sent it to Samsung and they just reloaded 4.0.4-which meant nothing fixed.
We then sent it back to our retailer, and they sent it to Samsung, who sent it back to us-still overheating.
Our retailer then credited our account for what she paid(£450) and told her to destroy the phone.
I have loaded rootbox/dreamkernel onto it and its running perfectly okay temperature wise.
So if I was you Id try a couple of things and if its still too hot then Id brick it so you get a new mobo for free.
Dear theunderling,
what is GB for eg please ?
You are pretty lucky as per your story. Just there is no way for this to happen in my country.
A friend of mine bought a Galaxy SIII, which wasn't ringing, after let some time unattended.
He sent it 3 times back for service and he requested his money back and after staying more
than 2 months (!!) without phone, they finally repaired it. What a scam !!!
Yes I was lucky. My wife bought it from a "catalogue" company(you pay like £10 a week). It was a woman from there that credited the account and told my wife to destroy the phone.
I wasnt going to bother paying for it if I didnt get satisfaction.
The phone didnt seem to be working properly(like yours) on 4.0.4,but not a problem since I put on rootbox.....so theoretically its a farce.
And every time she sent it back and forth she had to wipe then reinstall everything.
Samsung only seem to give a good service to total muppets that brick their phones.
They seem to penalise normal people who have genuine warranty claims through no fault of their own.
And I once had a motorola phone that was faulty.Van driver came to my door, took it away, then took it back repaired within 2 days.
And I only think its funny about my wifes phone because when I said in one of my threads(the motherboard one) that I was paying £450 for a s2,a guy was meaning I was a mug.
And Ive ended up getting a perfect s2 for free......lol
Good luck and GB means gingerbread.

hey endritkanani,
I have the same issue, As in my Galaxy S2 will get hot at the same portions you have marked in the photograph. A battery monitoring app also shows the temp to be around 48 celsius for the battery. I assume its hardware related as the temperature increases even if I charge when the phone is switched off.
Have you been able to find any solution for your issues?
PS: the problem started for me after I sent the phone for repairs related to the proximity sensor. However the service place said that it had nothing to do with them though I doubt that.http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

If anyone reads this my d710 got hot as well while it was on stock ROM. Apparently if it;s the battery itself getting hot from normal use or when charging, it might a sign of a battery going bad, and purchasing a replacement would be a good idea.
