XDA GENIUSES PLEASE HELP! Hard Bricked i9100 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys.
I made a stupid error last night when I tried going from ICS CM9 back to ICS STOCK LPQ.
I forgot to wipe data and just wiped cache and dalvik cache.
The connection broke whilst flashing through ODIN and now I have a blank black screen and the phone won't turn on...((( (It does technically as when I try pressing the on button later on the phone would get hot - meaning its on but BLACK SCREEN)
I have tried taking the battery out for hours and putting it back in...nothing is working.
I don't know what to do...I'm in uni where I have fast wifi. Please help. Any advice would be grateful
EDIT:
Ok.
So usb jig arrived this morning. Ripped it open. Popped my sgsII from charger (fully charged I think!) took battery out - 15 secs
placed battery back in.
Inserted USBJIG. . .
. . .
. . . . BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH
Nothing....Still the same. No screen activity...sad...
only way is either JTAG or Samsung service center right?
I used to have yellow exclamation mark + 4 counts....but they can't see anything so they won't know right?
or did the usbJig work but just the fact that I can't see anything on the screen??
...sad I hated seeing noobs flashing phones improperly and crying when it got softbricked....well even though mine is a straight hardbrick i still feel sad....noob
update.
I've taken it to SSCentre on tuesday. I called them yesterday and they said they couldn't fix it over there and had it shipped somewhere else...is that bad?
it could take upto 2 weeks!!!!!!
I rememeber the engineers working on my friends Galaxy S last year and they didn't have to send it to somewhere else. (he had the soft brick 3 yellow logo icons) and didn't have the version where the download/recovery mode didn't work) The engineer just flashed it with latest stock sgs firmware (ignoring that csc was orange lol)
Maybe my flash was so impeccable I fried the motherboard? I'm one kick ass bricker....

I'm assuming download mode and recovery also don't work when the device is powered off?

If you can get into download mode then there is still hope. If you can't then your only option is either warranty repair of Jtag service. If download mode then works then just reflash using Odin.

You flash i9000XXJVU to your i9100 phone? So you need JTAG or do service. Your bootloader is totally dead

Didn't even notice that XXJVU was an i9000 firmware.
To OP: Yup nothing to do, but send it in for repairs.

yeah sorry not JVU LPQ (I was getting mixed up with firmwares)
Yeah phone not going into download or recovery mode.
I think when I press the power button the phone does turn on but I get nothing but black screen....(the phone warms up)
So shall I order a JTAG to flash? or take it to repair centre?
Will they know I've been flashing this thing to death? Counter is on 4 at the moment..... so worried!

vol down+power+home button is download mode
Check it once again if it doesn't work...

maybe u can try some usb-jigg ?!
so you can come in to download-mode and then flash with odin =(

JTag is not Samsung warranty its a paid for service .
or take it to repair centre?

.
Warranty is void with custom rom root or rom counter above zero .
Will they know yes counter is on 4 .
Will they ignore it and put it through as warranty they may but dont count on it .
USB jig would be the starting point .
That fails you could go to warranty repair if thats rejected then pay for JTag repair .

if you have adb maybe you could try:
1. Connecting your device to PC while turned off,
2. CMD > adb devices
* If you see your device connected, proceed with:
adb reboot recovery or adb reboot bootloader
* If you don't see any device connected, try googling for qhsusb_dload driver for your device, and after you install them (and maybe a couple of PC restarts) repeat step 2
3. if you manage to get to recovery, i hope you have your nandroid backup so you could restore them.
my HTC sensation 4G had this situation few days ago, couldn't go to recovery/bootloader, blanked out when turned on and had fever
i fixed it using those steps, i wish i could remember where i got the qhsusb driver thingy from.. i'll let you know when i remember.
edit: it might work on S2, or might not.. i don't know this will help or not, but you could read adb/fastboot/bootloader/android 101, maybe you could get something from there

The bootloader death thing is not 100% true. When I first got my phone, (when there wasn't any rom for it) I tried flashing a I9000 rom. I was so stupid and luckily it didn't break my phone. After the flashing it turned on and stayed on bootlogo.
It was a miracle for me!

I Think I'm Bricked...

I think I've bricked my Galaxy S II.. I got it yesterday and tried to flash 2.3.5. When I was flashing with Odin, the program went unresponsive and crashed. There was nothing else to do but take out the battery.. I shouldn't have done it, but I did. And now it won't turn on at all. I've tried the 3 button method, for download mode, and a jig from my old i9000. Nothing has worked. The screen wont even turn on. I don't know what to do... Help Please??
you need a jtag.If it wont go into download or recovery its gone.
What do you, Jtag? I've got a usb jig, does that work? Or are they the same thing?
*What do you mean
aren't jigs phone-specific?
Any new info on this? Did jtag worked or whatever. I keep eye on this thread but looks like OP disappeared. Genuinely curious what happened with the phone.
Hmm .. very wierd that phone wont turn on ... i have broken Odin flashes purposedly many times myself but always I can get back into it ...
You could try power drain ... remove battery ... press power on button for 10 seconds (WITHOUT BATTERY IN) ... now put battery back in and try to go into Download mode.
Sorry but i got busy with other stuff but wanted to explain to him about the JTag.Its a special box called a RiffBox JTag and what it does is basically wipes the motherboard/bootloader and in most phones repears the bootloader aswell of a fully bricked phone so it can be put into download mode again letting you re-flash via Odin and thus saving your phone.A little miracle that means no more bricked phones. There doesnt seem to be that many around and to buy they aint cheap at all but if you can find a dealer or a phone shop who has one they can do it for you.For example.I bicked my phone and was going to buy the box on ebay.es imported (in spain there isnt any for sale) for 160euros complete or 140 without cables.Searched this site:
http://www.jtagbox.com/riff-jtag-bo...s-unbrick-bricked-phone-riff-box-owners-list/
and found a shop in Barcelona who did it for me for 35euros plus postage "BARGIN!!!!".If you search youtube and google for RiffboxJtag in your country you should find someone with a unit willing to help out or check the link ive given as it has a list of users worldwide.
EDIT:A jig is not a JTag.A jig will boot your SEMI-BRICKED(phone showing some kind of life ex.classic icon of phone/arrow/computor,menu and back arrow lights work e.t.c.) phone into download mode.A FULLY-BRICKED(dead,no signs of life.wont start.no download, recovery, lights nothing.DEAD!!!) phone needs a JTag
@cooza , Thanks for that explanation and site I even found one near me, that some day might come handy.
I must ask now to further clear my doubts, this riffjtag box, like you said is able to "revive" or "unbrick" _any_ bricked SGS2? No matter how bad is it? Im kinda new around these things and trying to suck up as much info/knowledge possible, before I decide to flash/root/?brick? xD haha ( hope not for last one) my phone.

Hi.As i said before there are semi and hard bricked phones.A semi bricked phone can normally be booted into download mode with the 3 button combo or a jig and your away again. It has the usuall symbol of a phone and a PC with a warning sign in the middle of them.Hard bricked is when the bootloader is damaged and there is basically no return. You got yourself a very expensive paper-weight for the office desk. Its like trying to turn on your phone with no battery in it.Dead, gone and not coming back. Before the Riffbox the only solution was the rubbish bin or maybe change the motherboard(but a few years ago that was an extremely pricey task if possible). Now we have the box.You can screw you phone to the point of no return and still the box will bring it back to life as it wipes the motherboard and in the case of the SGS2 also repears the damaged bootloader which is what boots your phone to start with. One thing to know, and i dont know if it happens to everyone but mine came back with 2.3.3 installed but there was no recovery mode.If this happens all you have to do is re-flash via Odin a more reciente firmware WITHOUT PIT FILE and yourll get recovery mode back at reboot.Obviously youll need to plug in your phone before hand to re-install the drivers.Same with Odin.boot to download, plug in,installs, unplug, then open Odin and flash.
EDIT:yourve got my name there so if something ever happens and you need a hand to re-flash after a jtag just send me a private message. Here to help.

Thank you mate! I am getting my SGS2 this week so ive been doing alot of reading and research about everything. Thanks for your contribution and kind offer to help if ever comes to that. Very appreciated.
No worries mate.truth is its very hard to fully hard-brick an i9100.The main thing to watch out for,and its a mistake that first-time users/flashers have done,is to flash there i9100 phones with i9000 firmware by mistake. An SGS is not an SGS2 and if they are mixed you WILL hard-brick your device. Here on XDA everything is clearly marked and on their right pages so you cant go wrong if you take your time dont rush-in.But just in case you havnt seen it heres the thread:
Firmwares:

CF-Root Kernels: (if you feel the need)

Hi, dont bother faffing with it mate, if you have only had it a day take it back and tell them it wouldnt boot after an automatic Kies update. If they cant turn it on they wont know you bricked it until it gets back to the factory and to be honest after selling 10 million of these babies they wont even bother checking it out, they'll just put it into spares or straight recondition it.
I did the same thing to my xoom, PC world couldnt turn it on so they just gave me another.

Galaxy s2 Bricked

hello experts
i had followed steps to root my galaxy s2 using odin flashing and it was success, and unlocked.
The phone started well with a yellow Exclamation.
and the phone was unlocked.
after a few minutes the phone was very slow and got stuck. i restarted it.
again stuck, restarted but it dint start again. i thought battry was low and put to charge.
but it dint charge as well.
So i showed the phone to a repairing center and they said its dead.
Any help that i can start my phone again ??
Thanks in advance guys :'(
Try reverting back to the stock unrooted rom.
Go to Sam firmware.com and download the stock from ..flash it via Odin.. search ..google is ur friend..Don't ask the repairing shop again for advice (phone is dead...duh)

If you have an official stock ROM with official firmware on it, the repair centre should change your mainboard and basically making your phone brand new.

The USB-Jig must work. especially on GB. it even works fot me on ICS.
When you can not get into download-mode (odin mode) ór recovery you can't flash anything..

if you have JTAG box you can repair your device using this.
Its normal device getting heat near charging/USB component. This is not HW problem.

[A] Galaxy s2 bricked
You have to know smthng:
- It is always possible to get to download mode, if not through the button combo (home+power+Volume_DOWN), then through the USB Jig
- If your phone is bricked, the download mode might not announce itself through the android robot: the exclamation mark will persist in some cases. One indication is that ODIN will be recognizing your phone on the COM port (USB that is).
Notify me if you needed further assistance
Which instructions did you follow?
If those are wrong hopefully somebody else will see this and avoid those instructions.

[Q] [HELP] ClockWorkMod backup bricked my phone??

hi everybody!
all the steps below were taken from galaxys2root.com as well as the files
i have i9100 with a stock rom 2.3.4 (ki4) (and 1.4gb of free memory-maybe that was the problem).
yesterday i rooted it (everything was fine) and then i installed CWM recovery 4.0.1.4 through odin v1.85 (went fine too) and then on my way to find myself a new rom i decided to backup my current one with cwm. then i entered cwm by pressing vol-down+pwr+home and hit "backup". it backed up the system and then moved on to the data and thats where it got stuck for like an hour.... from the guide i understood that it shouldnt take more than 10 min- 15 min top so i figured that im having a problem, i tuned off the phone by pressing pwr button and turn it back on, then the phone got stuck on the sgs2 screen with the triangle so i turned it off again----> this time it didnt came back on, and not responding to download mode neither to polling battery out or not even by connecting to usb and charger- just dead!
how is it possible? and what should i do to bring it back to life? (and myself)
thank you very much(please help...), and sorry for the long text and the bad english
do you have usb jig with you?
i assume you brick your phone.
read my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402286 carefully. anyway, usb jig will not harm your device
No download mode = try jig. Jig doesn't work = JTAG repair by 3rd party repairer (cheaper option) or JTAG repair my Samsung (more expensive option).
thank you,
no dont have one but i ordered from ebay.
is there a chance that my battery died and as a result of the two my phone wont respond?
Possible but highly unlikely. I guess you might as well try a new battery, at worst you'll have a spare when you get the phone repaired.
Fairly common problem go to forum xx download something and follow the instructions dont work go to a totally different forum and ask why ???
CWM 4 very old .
vol-down+pwr+home and hit "backup why ??? thats download mode
My guess would be wrong instructions/firmware .
The other question to ask is it a i9100 or a different version .
jje
i really hope thats the problem, im going to a friend now to try with his battry.
but really how is it possible that my phone is bricked when i didnt even try to flash a new rom, and more than that it happened in the backup process when all the cwm does is a copy operation... so what really had happened?

I should say jog = 50% chances of getting into download mode. JTAG is more like a solution for hard brick(totally unresponsive, bootloader totally mess up, brain system totally corrupted).
Base on my understanding, getting yourself a hard brick is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. If you go through zedomax(galaxys2root.com owner), he mentioned that he flashed all his android device countless time. All he got is just a couple of soft brick. Never a hard brick. Don't waste your money first. Invest on a cheap usb jig which only cost around 2 dollar, compare to JTAG services which cost 50 dollar.
If usb jig doesn't work, try to go for warranty , see whether they charge you or not. If warranty doesn't cover you and cost less than 50 dollar to repair, go for it.
Only go for JTAG if every effort above don't work.
Warning: JTAG is just a service that reinject Samsung firmware into your device. If your phone has hardware failure, I don't think they can help. Unless they provide hardware repair now. If you wanna be sure, email or call them up to see if they provide hardware repair/replace as well, just in case it is a hardware failure cases.

i know its a very rare situation but it happened. I've tried the jig and it didnt work, then i decided to send it back to the store and they told me they have sent it to the manufacturer, now im waiting...

Bricked phone

Ok guys so basically I bricked my phone again. Please read through the whole thing before replying anything.
So basically this is what happened:
-I had XperiaTized v7 patched rom flashed, everything working fine
-I tried legend 7 or something and flashed. It was pretty buggy.
-So I flashed this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437426&highlight=recovery I flashed the GB one first
-I booted and guess what I still had legend 7.
-So I flashed Froyo recovery which was attached on the same post to see how it was; I was curious and never tried froyo before I heard battery life was quite okay.
-So I booted to find that legend 7 was STILL there. In case you dunno, the recovery zips actually overide CWM so I'm left with the stock recovery.
-So I was like ah wth and I used the file manager provided by legend 7 to delete some useless files on the sd card.
-So I rebooted and to try to flash CWM but it got stuck on the samsung screen. (I actually pressed reboot to recovery on the power menu)
-I panicked and I pressed the home button nothing happened.
-I held the power button to try to restart but same thing happened.
-I removed the batt and went to charge cuz I realised it was quite low after flashing the last 3.
-When I plugged it in the the screen lit up but I was not greeted with the usual power icon.
-I unplugged after a few minutes and tried to boot. The screen lit up a bit but nothing happened. I'm really panicking now. It's quite a new phone. Please help I'm like pulling my hair out now.
PS I know there's a way to get to download using the keys but I don't have cooper.ops cuz all the download links are dodgy. If anyone has the file please let me have it all the roms I have I flashed through CWM.
Help will be greatly appreceated!

Check the PM!
now after unplug I get the samsung screen, the one that you see before entering recovery but it freezes there
Just a quick question. If I do send it to the Samsung Service Centre to get the board replaced, how much will it cost and how long will it take? Sentrax is helping me out with the unbricking but if I really can't do it I'll send it to the service centre

Maybe you will be billed for repair maximum the same price of new ace , if you honest to samsung officer. Or free if you said,bla-bla, sudenly my phone stop working (at the end you get oscar, become movie actor, kidding ).
What? Billed the price of a new ace just to replace the board? Might as well just get a new one!

As I said, if you honest to samsung service center officer that you bricked your phones because installing custom rom make your waranty void.
Imho, price of board wont far from new ace price, because main components phone assembly are lcd, board, battery and casing. You can weight cost of these component.
Hint
Can you enter dowmload mode?Maybe you can use odin and repair it.
Yup that's what I'm couting on.
Unbricked it

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 won't turn on!

Hi there,
Firstly sorry if I have posted in the wrong place, i'm not too good with forums and or technology. About two weeks ago, my sister had passed me down her old Samsung Galaxy S2 which she had been using for more than a year. She's had no problems with it what so ever. Up until today, I was browsing the internet, when the internet 'app' crashed and gave me a pop up saying 'internet browser has stopped responding' or something to that affect. It then followed by a black screen where I was not able to do nothing apart from stare at the screen. I popped out the battery, waited a couple of minutes and put it back in. The screen came on with the Samsung logo, but nothing happened from there on, it was frozen. So I repeated the process one more, and now the phone does not turn on at all! I really hope someone can help me out here.
The phone has never been rooted/flashed or had anything done with it.
I have tried leaving the battery out for a couple of hours, still nothing.
I've also swapped batteries and nothing happened.
Tried booting in recovery/download mode and nothing happened either.
I've also tried connecting it to my PC where nothing happens.
I'm hoping someone can help me here, I've only had the phone for two weeks and it's already broken! My sister had it for a year and no problems! Bump.
Thanks in advance,
So can you boot into recovery or download mode? Without either of those two there's nothing you can do apart from take it to a service centre. If you have download mode then you can flash a stock ROM using Odin.
Else, do you have warranty still as it's a year old? If you do, take it to the service centre under warranty.

Sorry if I sound like a noob, but what is a jig?
Thanks
Are you sure it's out of warranty? Samsung offers a 2 year warranty in some countries (afaik everywhere in the EU)
My Wife says I'm a phone geek.....
I'd have to agree.....
Click the link in my signature and look at the section for 'no download mode'.. Try that section. Some users report being able to boot into download mode after trying those things.
Edit: And look on eBay for 'i9100 usb jig'. Its a way of attempting to force into download mode

Thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately none of those methods worked for me, i'll try the USB jig and report back. If that doesn't work i'm guessing the motherboard is the problem right? Is Samsung able to repair the phone for me even if its out of warranty but with a cost? If so, how much do you think it will cost?
Thanks
You tried all of them in 15 minutes? Give them another go, it can take a few goes sometimes if you don't get it quite right. Otherwise, yes try the jig, but don't pin your hopes on it. Yes, they can repair it. The other (cheaper) option is to buy a handset with broken screen off eBay or similar and switch your motherboard. I'm sorry, I don't know the costs :/

A little solution
Plug in ur usb to the PC as the device is off....it should remain off for this...
Plug in and see if its charging via pc.....As for it to charge..it has to go through the repair which happens internally without you need to do anything...
A triangle should appear before charging icon appears..As it appears,, just right after that flash ur rom via odin disconnect dont boot now wait n again do the usb charging trick.....
Then boot it should probably be working up again..Well it worths for a try.......
Do it n post it.
Tried rooting my s2 using odin. went into download mode then connected the phone. and clicked start. according to the instructions for rooting from youtube , it said the phone would restart after it said PASS on Odin. After it showed PASS it didnt restart even after a very longtime. so i disconnected.
Now i get the samsung logo with a triangle below. I m able to go to download mode.
Pls help guys

Did you check the AUTO REBOOT option in Odin? Did you try to remove the battery for a couple of minutes and reboot?
Yellow triangle is normal
PLEASE READ THE FAQ said:
Q4: When I turn my phone on, I see a yellow triangle. What is it and how can I get rid of it?
It will appear if you have flashed a non-official kernel from download mode. If you flash kernels using CWM recovery, Mobile Odin etc. you won't get this yellow triangle.
The easiest ways to remove it are to use the app Triangle Away OR use a USB Jig.

Hi there:
I had bought the device in June 2011
I had the same problem about 7 months back and did as you suggested, was able to recover the firmware.
Now, I am facing the same problem today, my device started and was stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo.
Did the same thing again, the animated android logo appeared, and after some time the device was off.
I have been trying to get the device to switch on , but to no avail, the device is not even powering ON.
Device info: Unrooted , OS: 4.1.2
Please advice. Kindly treat this as urgent.
Many thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Siddharth

Phone not booting at all/charging/no signs of life = Samsung service centre or local mobile repair shop for diagnosis. Nothing anyone here can suggest beyond that if the phone won't even bootloop or be in a state where it's 'user fixable'.

Sorry For the late reply.
I guess, you need to boot in recovery
with home + power+vol up
and clear data and reboot
if that doesnt help.
try booting in download mode again and flash the firmware.
but let it charge first.
and post here

Tried everything , the phone is not even powering ON.
I checked with service center , they are asking INR 8000 to replace the motherboard.
I'm instead thing of buying S4, should I ?
please advice guys.
My phone is dead too...
I left it on (functioning normally) and went for a bath, when I got out it was dead...
From functioning ok to nothing in a few minutes, I don't have any idea why. Is it really the motherboard?
Fact: Electronics breaks. All the time. All electronics.
MJDdeLacerda - Take it to a local mobile repair shop for diagnosis, unless you're experienced with this type of electronics, nothing you can do.
