camera force close - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Does anyone else's camera force close when clicking on the little gallery button in the bottom right corner of the screen? It FCs every time I do it.
I'm rooted, stock, with a few customizations, but even if I go all the way back to full stock it still force closes.

This happened to me after I downloaded a flashlight app. Once I closed the flashlight app the camera worked fine. I uninstalled the flashlight and added a different one ( Tiny Flashlight + LED) and had no problems.
Are you using a flashlight app?

Good thought, interesting. I did have one installed, but it's been uninstalled since. I cleared dalvik, cleared data, but it's still happening...

Are you able to open the gallery using any other method?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

yeah, I can open it using the gallery icon,so I can still get to my pics without a new gallery app.
I've tried reinstalling both apps, odexed and deodexed. I'm thinking there's a setting the flashlight app changed that is left over from when i uninstalled it.

Can you confirm if the button ever worked properly?
When you click on the gallery button in the camera app, you're telling the phone to open the gallery app and replace the current view of the camera app with the view of the gallery app. That the two programs work independently suggests that something is wrong with the link. Either the flashlight or other app is preventing the camera app from having its' view replaced or something happened with your gallery directory like it contains 2 folders or files of the same name. Since other shortcuts seem to work I'd go with my first guess. Can programs like smemo or Photoshop access the gallery ok?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

Yep, any other app that I've tried can access the gallery just fine.
It's definitely seems to be something with the way the camera is linking to the gallery.
Honestly, I can't remember if it ever worked properly. I haven't taken too many photos. In fact, this was the first time since the day I got the phone 2 weeks ago that I took a photo.

Sorry, I think we're now officially out of my depth so I may not be of much more use. If it were a program I was writing on my computer I'd go to a program that can successfully launch the gallery (SMemo, photo shop, the gallery program itself) and copy the code for launching the gallery and replace it in the camera app. I don't know how to do that in Android (yet) though. It might be worth reverting it, taking it back to AT&T and asking for a new one? If you use words like "upset" and "disappointed" you might be able to get a free goodie or two

I figured it out and it turns out I'm an idiot. I had frozen Quickview in Titanium Backup. Fixed. Thanks for your help.

drocap2 isn't working for me

My phone is rooted, and I did give permission to drocap2, however, when I take a picture, it's just not being saved. I view the phone from the computer and the pictures just don't show up in the drocap folder.
I've got the same problem!
I use MyPhoneExplorer instead. Works every time!
none of the screen cap programs are working as of yet aside from using the sdk
I feel like this shouldn't be a problem. Google should be programming a screencap feature into android.

The stock gallery app sucks on this phone and every phone ive tried. pictures barely ever load, fc, etc. id download quickpic i think it is from market, or use the motorola one, which is good.
My gallery is not functional as well. Trying Quick Pix now.
I can concur. The factory MotoBlur Gallery app as well as the factory MotoBlur Social Media widget and factory MotoBlur Music app are each in their own right flaming piles of dog **** disguised in brown paper bags at your doorstep. I'm always having to End Task the Social Media widget so it will refresh proper facebook updates, it rarely grabs LinkedIN like it should as well as other networks. It randomly locks up on any given FB status update from a friend and requires to be End Tasked. The Gallery app with GingerBread is horrid. It wants to sync everything to the "cloud" or internet somewhere like Facebook. Then you try to delete a image off your phone and it makes you think it's going to be deleted from all over the world wherever you may have uploaded it to. Makes you a little nervous I'll say. On top of that it also fails to refresh thumbnails or grab full res images quite frequently. It also does not properly recognize my personal directory structure on my SD-ext card. FroYo saw my dir's fine, but GB just throws everything in very generic "titles". I'm going to get the gallery app that is suggested here as well. I got winamp and am happy with the music playing experience again on my Atrix. Funny. . . Winamp on the droid does music better than Droid/Moto can do themselves. Go figure.
Quick Pix works fine. I like it!

Front Camera Force Close and Restart

Hi,
Has anybody faced this issue?
Whenever I open the camera app then switch to front camera, the camera app force close and the tablet restart. I guess the app got corrupted somehow and I'm not sure if this is related to the root.
At any event, I'd appreciate it if some can provide me with camera.apk. Maybe replacing mine would solve the issue.
Just tried, no issue here. Had an issue similar to this before root. Try browsing into the folder where pics are - i deleted some which did not look right and it refreshed the strip of photos in the camera app and force closes disappeared

Thanks for the tip but unfortunately this does not work!
If something is wrong with the gallery it would crash whenever I open the camera. but the problem only happens when switching to front cam.
My only hope is get the camera.apk and overwrite the one I have.

post location of the app where it is on the tablet and maybe people will post it for you. Have you tried clearing cash for the app too?
the camera.apk is under /system/app but after some trials I assumed that it's not the app. It's probably the driver or something the front camera is dependent on. I have tried turning on the front cam with Skype and other apps and again system crashed.
I guess I could either do factory restore or search/wait for firmware update.
Thanks anyway ps3taker

Anyone replaced Gallery with Quickpic?

Struggling to replace dodgy gallery with quickpic on JB 4.1.2 so that the camera uses quickpic as the default viewer.
Tried freezing gallery, when I click on photo in camera nothing happens. Set default app for photos to be quickpic and the camera still uses gallery.
Any ideas. ..?

The first thing I do with a new device is ditch the Gallery in favor of QuicPic.
If you're rooted, no problem just delete the Gallery. If not, go to Settings/Applications/All/Gallery/ and click on Clear Defaults. Next time you view a picture select QuickPic and click on Clear Defaults.

If it was easy you'd of hired the guy at Home Depot to to it.

You can also disable gallery app in application settings
Thanks guys but not working. Uninstalled gallery. Clicked on a picture, chose quickpic, cleared defaults. When I click on a photo using the camera nothing happens, it's like the camera is hardcoded to use old gallery.will try installing stock camera and trying that

Is it possible to rename quickpic to the same name as old gallery and put it in the system folder?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Thats my question too, but with the nexus 4 gallery.
any solution?
-anyone tried the renaming idea, as suggested?
My guess is the two apps function differently and so google has changed our ability to use quickpic from the JB camera. Why? Think about it - if you use the camera from the lockscreen by swiping to the right, you can take a pic and review it without entering a password and unlocking your phone. But reviewing a pic this way gives you very limited options (eg you CANNOT set it as wall paper, nor can you email it or send it, which if you Could, would be a sneaky security flaw that would enable access into a locked device).
This means google has rewritten gallery to function differently according to whether it has been accessed via the camera from the lockscreen or whether you have accessed the camera after unlocking the device.
Quickpic probably doesn't have that ability, but I wish it DID!
I dunno - MAYBE WE ALL SHOULD EMAIL THE MAKERS OF QUICKPIC AND REQUEST THAT IT BE UPDATED SO AS T WORK WITH THE STOCK CAMERA?
Quickpic is an awesome app and it's way better than the stock gallery app!
when you disable gallery in apps manager it disables both the gallery and camera which means that their obvously linked together. they are both separate apks but still both part of the same app therefore meaning that it wouldnt really be possible to do it i dont think unless you were to modify the gallery app yourself you might be able to do it but would be hard XD from what i can think the camera apk kinda acts like a link if you think about it as opposed to its own app.
QuickPic cannot view TIFF files. I have alot of them copied from my PC to the SD card and cannot find a viewer that can see both those and the Jpegs. Anyone have any ideas?

Camera app help on peeter's 2.3.5 hybrid ROM

I'm about to smash my Photon and I need some help. I recently upgraded to peetr's custom 2.3.5 hybrid ROM so I could use TMobil. The only camera app I can get to work with photobucket uploading is the stock camera. I've tried 3 other camera apps, and every time I select "photobucket" as the "Share this photo" destination, I get the "Media added to photobucket queue" message....and that's it. No uploading. No errors, nothing. If I use the stock camera to take a pic and select photobucket, it uploads just fine.
The problem is, the stock camera is tied into "Gallery ICS" and I can't separate them. In my previous setup, when I took a pic with the stock camera, then clicked on that pic in the bottom left corner, the pic would pop up full screen and I could check it out and upload or delete it.
In peetrs ROM, when I take a pic and then click on it, it opens Gallery ICS, which then shows me a thumbnail of every fricking folder anywhere on my camera I have a photo saved. WTF? I don't understand why anyone could possibly want that behavior from a camera app, but whatever. I've scoured the settings and I can't find any way to stop Gallery ICS from popping up when I want to view a pic in the camera.
Does anyone know how to fix the photobucket uploading issue or force the camera to just let me view a pic when I click on it?

Just a thought that you could try actually searching the the first post of this ROMS thread. The answer is right there under the optional APKs.
BlurCamera with gallery choice - mainly for Quickpic (pictures must be on internal SD)
That should hopefully fix your issue. I'll test with my photobucket to see if I can make it upload.

I have the new camera working, but when I click on a pic to view it, I get "Media Gallery not installed". This happens regardless of which storage location is selected (internal or SD). Am I supposed to install something else?

QuickPic was already installed before I "upgraded" the camera. I can launch QuickPic fine, but this new camera app doesn't give me the option to select a gallery, just an error when I click on a pic. Any other ideas?

If you can't set the photo gallery that launches, I would just move on to trying a different/previous camera. Can you go to manage apps and clear any defaults that would be causing it to only use that gallery?
Sorry, wish I could be more help.

Yes, I've cleared data, it did nothing. I really don't understand how this replacement camera is supposed to work, if it even does. Has anyone here successfully swapped out their stock camera with the one linked in the first post and have it working? If so, could you please respond?
This is the most frustrated I've been in 3 years, 2 cameras and a dozen roms. The stock camera and Camera ICS on this rom blinds everything with the flash making them unusable. This replacement camera doesn't blind everything with the flash, but it throws this damn "Media Gallery not installed" error. I just want crap back like it was, where I had a stock camera with a flash that didn't blind everything and let me open pics to view them without showing me every picture gallery on the camera. Of course I can't go back to that rom since I flashed the KDDI radio.
