[Q] External Hard disk via microUSB - Sony Tablet S

I wanted to connect my External Hard disk (500 GB, without sepqarate power supply) to my Sony Tablet S. Can i do that using a 'microUSB to USB female' connector? My previous tablet: 'Acer Iconia Tab A500' had an USB port and i used to connect my hard disk with ease. I wanted to know if Sony tablet can be connected to an external hard disk or it will only support Pen drives
Thanks in advance!

You will need a OTG Adapter and I guess a power supply.
The HardDisk is supported from Tablet S.
Example of OTG:
http://www.amazon.de/Nokia-USB-OTG-Adapter-CA-157-bulk/dp/B004FCVAKI

Yes OTG adapter is fine (microUSB to USB female connector). But i did not understand the power supply part

Works perfect for me.
You need a separat power supply for thr hard disk drive, without tablet can't drive it alone because the drive needs more power then a usbstic

If the drive doesn't use a discrete power supply, you might have problems, but if it worked on the A500 you should be alright. Since the USB port can only provide a little bit of power, pendrives and HDD's with their own power supplies work best.

thanks

So far, I can not get any powered external HDD to be recognized by the USB port, very similar to many media player USB detection/protection schemes.
Flash drives & card readers, no problem.
Sony says that an externally powered FAT32 500GB HDD will in fact work. The 500GB WD USB 3.0 "My Passport" (internally powered) does NOT work, however.
Going to try some other tricks. Any positive results will report back.

I too bought an adapter and no go.

Internally powered devices are almost certainly not going to work. Generally, they require a fair bit of power, and the Sony's USB circuitry is infamously short on voltage and current. Devices with a separate external power supply should work but I give no guarantees

disk starting, but not recognised
Despite the above mentioned "Sony's USB circuitry is infamously short on voltage", my chilli 1T 2.5" disk was recognized by the tablet.

Try formatting it in FAT32 and trying again. I don't think the stock kernel includes full ExtX support for external devices. Worth a try, at least.

sorry to shoot you down but its not VOLATGE its CURRENT (A) it is short on. voltage is fine. otherwise something would go pop lol
sorry i have to say it im an electronics student
on a lighter not. on my xperia pro (not mini) using an itg cable i can power up a cd drive (a pop open one not a slide out one. so its a little better on current) but being android 2.3.4 i cant do anything with it and i haven't rooted it yet.

I have two Western Digital WDBACY5000ABK-NESN 500 GB portable hard drives that I frequently connect to my tablet using a Sony SGPUC1 cable. The hard drives are formatted FAT32 which, for external drives, is the only file system format natively recognized by the tablet's OS.

I also use a 250GB Seagate FreeAgent Drive that I formatted in FAT32 with a third-party equivalent of the SGPUC1 cable (any USB-F to microUSB-M cable should work). I've never had any problems.

I can use me WD 250GB Essential , it powers up no problem. Unfortunalty it's formatted as NTFS so android doesn't naitivley read it, so it tried [root] Ntfs Mounter but it's still not seeing the partition. Anyone any ideas ? The disk is half full with videos / pictures / files.

As stated in the description for that app, it only works on a select trio of Samsung devices running ICS, not on our device. However, that's not to say there isn't a way. I would suggest trying out Drive Mount from the Play Store (http://goo.gl/AA1vy) but if that doesn't work, you're probably out of luck and it will need to be in FAT32

I tried to connect a 250gb Trekstor HDD with own power supplier (FAT 32 formatted!)
I used an OTG connector (I am sure I did!)
Effect: Nothing, did not work!

So I removed NTFS Mounter as it is not designed for Tablet S, I installed Drive Mount. Now the HDD doesn't even spin up, I have lights and clicking, USB device not found .
Anyone else have intermittent HDD behavior ?
Will play with it later...must watch Game of Thrones

After connecting the hard drive to the tablet, how long did you wait before you tried accessing the hard drive? Sometimes it takes several seconds (like 10 or more) for the Android OS to detect a device has been connected. This is especially true when connecting hard drives. Try connecting the hard drive to the tablet, then get up and go to your refrigerator, grab a cola or beer, come back and sit down, and then try accessing the hard drive. You'll probably find that the Android OS finally detected the hard drive. I say this from experiencing a delay frequently.
Also, you definitely need to use a USB OTG cable (aka "On-the-Go" or "Host" cable) when connecting a hard drive to the tablet. A standard USB cable (aka "Slave" cable) will not work.
You can test a cable to see if it truly is an OTG cable by using an ohmmeter (every household has one, right?) and checking for resistance/continuity between pins 4 and 5 of the Micro-A plug. On an OTG cable, the Micro-A plug's pins 4 and 5 are connected together, so the meter should read near 0 ohms. On a standard USB cable, the Micro-A plug's pin 4 is not used, so in that case, the meter will read infinite ohms (usually displayed as OL on digital meters) between pins 4 and 5.
I'm probably telling you things you already know, but some readers may not know these things, so hopefully this information will be welcomed.
Keeping that in mind, I'd also like to mention that an OTG cable like Sony's SGP-UC1 cable must be used when connecting any slave device (e.g., flash/thumb drive, hard drive, keyboard, mouse, camera) to the tablet. When connecting the tablet to a computer, the tablet is the slave device and a standard USB "Type-A Plug to Mini-A Plug" cable must be used.

[Q] USB port usage

Thats's a limitation. USB port on Viewpad 7 is passive, so it can not read external sources.

I do recall someone talking about using a "USB OGO" cable to do something like what you are talking about... Look into it on "android.modaco.com" looks like a modified USB cable and a custom rom will let you attach a flashdrive to your USB port...
hope that helps...
I have one of these When You fist connect USB to PC it installs a virtual cd drive . You can either ignore it or let it install after that Plug in USB while tablet is on ,it will ask you to turn on USB storage tap turn on and SD card shows up on PC as a removable disk you can read and write to with Windows Explorer

No worries mate, I have been able to move files (mainly music) between my PC and the ViewPad, I just found it odd that since it will obviously act as a receiver through the USB port from a PC why wouldn't it receive directly from a USB memory? Obviously I don't know enough about how these things work.
According to some users the viewpad 7 kernel supports usb OTG where the devices acts as the host.

I played this morning with some USB cables and my Viewpad 7 and I found as follows:
1) You need USB OTG cable or USB OTG adapter with USB A female connector at one end and with USB Mini B male connector at second end - that end you should put in Viewpad 7 USB socket. With such a combination Viewpad 7 can read USB flash memories. I will try later other USB devices.
2) it worked fine on tj_style ROM and on Viewsonic stock ROM with Android 2.2.2.
3) Mouse works, but there is no cursor and the selection "jumps" from icon to icon.
4) Wireless keyboard, USB DVD player and USB hard disk do not work.
sorry for the maybe noob Q, but do I have to mount the usb memory or do i directly see the files in a folder...
I use ghost commander and cannot find the containing files...;-/
Thx in advance
--> Problem solved: It was the NTFS-Prob....With fat32 everything works like a charm...(no extra mounting...)

I use the Q5 USB Memory Manager app to mount a memory stick or a usb hdd. This works even on custom roms. Try google to find out more about this app.

Simple Test report
Device: Mini Pro SK17i
Rom: Stock 2.3.4 .58
Kernel: Stock
Bought a OTG cable for Samsung yesterday, and another USB Female to Female adapter for an ordinary USB cable.
a) The female - female adapter for use with microUSB cable = FAIL. Charging function intact, no detection for any USB device.
b) OTG cable:
1. Plugged in a mouse - cursor appears on the screen immediately. Rightbutton serves as return button. Scroll function works
2. Keyboard: not tested
3. USB Lan RJ45 (works on some Android Tablets): NOT working on Mini Pro. "Unsupported USB device" appears on screen
4. USB flash Drive: Toshiba 1Gb - Unsupported
Transcend 4Gb - Unsupported
*Tried out the USB OTG patch for Arc. NO LUCK
Conclusion: Unless you want to use external mouse or keyboard on your convenience, DONT bother to use the OTG for external memory/ethernet. It would not work on current rom. The OTG function is more or less useless.
USB flash works perfectly with Q5 USB Memory Manager app, i tried to connect 4gb flash and 2 gb flashcard via card reader)
But i could not make the mouse works
Some USB Hubs are working great ! Toady i plugged an apple pro keyboard into my device which was correctly found by my St17i
after plugged a mouse into the apple keyboard and also a 8 GB intenso usb stick. All 3 devices worked at the same time, astonishing !

... and RAY also. Ray support USB storage?
I've tested an Samsung Micro-USB-Adapter (ET-R205U) on Ray (Ginger 2.3.4 stock), this week and NO result with Sandisk Cruizer 2GB USB flash drive.
Mouse and Keyb's works fine but no external usb mass storage.
I didn't test any usb hub yet. Someone of you did it?
I dont know a lot about USB OTG but there is an USB OTG apk in system/apk.
what if we replace that apk to some other gingerbread running phone's apk which perfectly runs USB OTG
have you guys tried the USBOTG ARC app that is on the market? Apparently can make USB sticks works.

How to Enable OTG?

how do i enable the OTG mode on the Galaxy SII running android 4.0.4 (resurrection remix ICS 1.8 ROM) and i have a kernal that claims its working with OTG ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574672&highlight=otg ) but when i connect my cable and usb stick ( tried other devices) nothing happens! any help would be much appreciated
I just acquired a 'micro-B USB OTG' cable myself (a cheap knock-off from eBay).
As far as USB drives are concerned, I have found that I must insert a USB thumb drive into the cable before inserting the cable into my GS2. Otherwise it will not be recognized.
When inserting the cable + thumb-drive I get these two messages:
"USB connector connected" immediately followed by
"USB Mass storage connected"
and I am able to use the USB drive.
I have successfully been able to connect a 1 GB Kingston DataTraveler II, but - oddly - not a 4GB Kingston DataTraveler. An unmarked 8GB USB drive was also recognized.
I have not been able to connect: a Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 v.1.0 (not that I need it, but just to see if it would); and neither an HP mouse. For previous versions of Android (before ICS) you can easily find information of users successfully connecting all sorts of things including keyboards, mice, and larger hard drives.
A few other important issues are:
- File format for drives must be FAT32
- Before removing the cable+drive, remember to unmount drives by opening the notification area and click on "USB mass storage connected".
that helped me out.....not what so ever.
what is OTG btw?
On-The-Go, lets you plug in USB devices like mice , keyboards, and usb sticks into your phone like a computer

If the USB is partitioned as FAT32 a nifty notification will show and you can press that and then browse.
However, if the USB is partitioned as NTFS, you should open a file manager with root access (Root Explorer or ES File manager to name a few) and browse to /mnt/ntfs/ and you should see your files there.
Note: Am only assuming this is the mount point, since looking at the kernel you are using, he mentioned gokhan for the USB OTG and I am using his kernel (Siyah)

Usb otg on z5 compact?

Anyone got usb otg on their z5 compact?
I get the message saying that it's detected the usb HDD but it's not showing up in any file manager apps
I was using a powered usb cable, when I used normal unpowered usb otg cable I was able to see files on usb hdd
I asume you dit check the "usb detection" setting in settings\device connections\usb (translated from dutch so might be different names )
When i connect an USB stick it is recognized.
Yeah I assumed it would get recognised when the hdd was connected but with the exposed usb port the voltage is turned off, so I put the shortcut for ' detect usb device' in my shortcuts as I connect usb devices often
